Kinslayer: The Lotus War Book Two, by Jay Kristoff

Kinslayer is Book Two in Jay Kristoff's critically acclaimed Lotus War series that began with Stormdancer, featuring an unforgettable heroine and a stunningly original Japanese dystopian steampunk world

A SHATTERED EMPIRE
The mad Shogun Yoritomo has been assassinated by the Stormdancer Yukiko, and the threat of civil war looms over the Shima Imperium. The toxic blood lotus flower continues to ravage the land, the deadlands splitting wider by the day. The machine-worshippers of the Lotus Guild conspire to renew the nation's broken dynasty and crush the growing rebellion simultaneously - by endorsing a new Shogun who desires nothing more than to see Yukiko dead.

A DARK LEGACY
Yukiko and the mighty thunder tiger Buruu have been cast in the role of heroes by the Kagé rebellion. But Yukiko herself is blinded by rage over her father's death, and her ability to hear the thoughts of beasts is swelling beyond her power to control. Along with Buruu, Yukiko's anchor is Kin, the rebel Guildsman who helped her escape from Yoritomo's clutches. But Kin has his own secrets, and is haunted by visions of a future he'd rather die than see realized.

A GATHERING STORM
Kagé assassins lurk within the Shogun's palace, plotting to end the new dynasty before it begins. A waif from Kigen's gutters begins a friendship that could undo the entire empire. A new enemy gathers its strength, readying to push the fracturing Shima imperium into a war it cannot hope to survive. And across raging oceans, amongst islands of black glass, Yukiko and Buruu will face foes no katana or talon can defeat.

The ghosts of a blood-stained past.

From Publishers Weekly
The second Japanese-flavored steampunk adventure in the Lotus War series (after 2012's Stormdancer) starts with a bang when teen kitsune Yukiko, craving revenge for her father's murder, destroys three Lotus Guild warships. But the tides turn when Lord Hiro, Yukiko's former lover and the Guild's foremost ally, declares himself the Daimyo. Yukiko's uncontrollable powers also become as dangerous as any enemy. The Guild stands poised to crush Yukiko's burgeoning rebellion, and the empire's fate hangs on three unlikely people: Artificer Kin, increasingly conflicted about his decision to follow Yukiko; Burakumin Hana, derided and considered beneath notice; and Kage Michi, a maidservant whose relationship with a magistrate threatens more than her heart. Though Kristoff opens with a character refresher, new readers might have difficulty following the story, and while the action scenes are just as thrilling and the plot even more fast-paced than in the first volume, this sequel is undermined by its increasingly one-note pseudo-Japanese setting, as well as its reliance on predictable tropes. Review

“Kristoff is the master of unique and intense plots and huge twists. This book has it all ― and a nice little bow to tie it all up with. There are swords, action, friendship, a conspiracy, grief and hope. It's going on my "Amazing Reads" shelf, and I urge you to pick it up.” ―USAToday.com

“With its geisha girls in gas masks and canvas blimps spewing black exhaust as they chug across the sky, Stormdancer paints a vivid picture of a decrepit, steampunk Japan. It's startling to witness a country that so reveres nature presented in such an environmentally compromised position, as it is in the kickoff to Jay Kristoff's "The Lotus War" series. But it's this inventive juxtaposition that makes Stormdancer such a thrilling addition to the increasingly tired yet continuously expanding dystopian scene…. [A] fast-paced, fantastical adventure [that] is sharp as a Shogun's sword.” ―The LA Times

“Stormdancer is an intoxicating joyride into steampunklandia with a magical dose of mythology, the supernatural, violence, dystopian themes, and a top-notch brassy heroine who rivals Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games. Yes, I did say that!” ―The Huffington Post

“Kristoff's imaginative debut, the first in a series, presents the feudal, dystopian Shima Empire, a menacing Japanese-inspired setting… The innovative setting, fast-moving plot, vivid descriptions, and thrilling action scenes make this a refreshing addition to the steampunk canon.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Soars higher than the arashitora Kristoff writes about; superb.” ―Kirkus, starred review

“Jay Kristoff's Stormdancer is steampunk by way of feudal Japan, in which a young woman with unusual abilities befriends a thunder tiger in a polluted industrial wasteland. Strong heroines, detailed settings, and fascinating legends hit the sweet spot.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Japanese Steampunk unafraid to engage with the dark side of the subgenre. The Lotus must bloom!” ―SF Signal

“A steampunk fantasy with richly drawn mythical creatures and a tough female protagonist…. Packed full of surprising twists and turns, nonstop action, and intense dialogue.” ―School Library Journal

“[T]he plot takes off when the mythical arashitora (literally ‘stormtiger') forms a strong bond with dagger-wielding heroine, Yukiko. Her relationship with the griffin-like creature is especially poignant in light of the personal losses she reveals as the story unfolds… it's the bonds of family and friendship that feel the truest, with heartwrenching effect.” ―Romantic Times

“Think Lassie, if Kurosawa had been the director and Lassie had been three tons of angry mythical demon-shredding sass bent on pushing Timmy down the well… A colorful cast of supporting characters and thoughtful plotting add further to Stormdancer's appeal, but, really, Kristoff has the reader at "girl meets griffin." The captivating backdrop, graceful prose and army of mechanized samurai are all just added bonuses.” ―Shelf Awareness

“What's that? You say you've got a Japanese Steampunk novel with mythic creatures, civil unrest, and a strong female protagonist? I'm afraid I missed everything you said after "Japanese Steampunk." That's all I really needed to hear.” ―Patrick Rothfuss, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear

“With airships, demons, and lashings of revolutionary swordplay, this chi-fueled vision of a steampunk feudal Japan will blow your split-toed socks off.” ―Scott Westerfeld, New York Times bestselling author of Leviathan

“Jay Kristoff pushes the steampunk genre exactly where it needs to go, away from Victorian London's over-trodden lanes and into the great wide world. With its rocketing action, eccentric and convincing characters, and deep immersion in heroic Japanese culture, Stormdancer slammed my head into an updated vision of the great chanbara films of Kurosawa and Kobayashi. I'll be waiting for more from Mr. Kristoff.” ―K.W. Jeter, author of The Kingdom of Shadows

“Set in a complex and richly imagined world, Stormdancer draws on inspirations as widespread as epic fantasy, steampunk, and Japanese mythology, effortlessly piecing them together into an alternate history that is as vibrant as it is disturbing. Yukiko is an admirable heroine, made of compassion and courage, but it's the remarkable friendship forged between Yukiko and the majestic thunder tiger, Buruu, that readers will find truly unforgettable. In this breathtaking debut fantasy, Kristoff has given us an adventure teeming with impossible quests and betrayals, rebellion and murder, jealousy and harbored secrets. I eagerly look forward to seeing where his imagination takes us next.” ―Marissa Meyer, New York Times bestselling author of Cinder

“Jay Kristoff's Yukiko and her indomitable thunder tiger's entertaining adventures have just sent steampunk gloriously Asian.” ―Stephen Hunt, internationally bestselling author of The Kingdom Beyond the Sea

“Kristoff's debut is a lyrical triumph of chainsaw swords and thunder tigers that steampunk fans and mythology buffs will devour.” ―Kevin Hearne, author of The Iron Druid Chronicles

“If you enjoy rich detail and sensual writing, you'll dig it…. Bristling with energy and enthusiasm, this is the start of what should be a deservedly popular series.” ―Library Journal

“Compelling characters--particularly Yukiko, the Arashitora Buruu, and the artificer Kin--a strong environmental message, and a thrilling battle setting the stage for the sequel. Offer this to fans of Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy or Philip Reeve's Hungry City Chronicles.” ―Booklist

Kristoff's writing skills definitely shined bright in Stormdancer.
By JeanBookNerd
Fans who enjoyed Stormdancer will love the second book in Jay Kristoff's The Lotus War trilogy, Kinslayer. Kristoff's writing skills definitely shined bright in Stormdancer and it would only make sense that the sequel would excel above it. And it sure did! He has taken all the elements that made the first one such a successful hit and pushes it to a level beyond any imagination. New characters will be introduced as well as reacquainting old ones. Reading the continuation of this impressive series is like witnessing something epic unfold. The story gets broader with the addition of the point of views of new characters. Several plots scratches beneath the surface and the world outside of Shima finally sees the day of light in this second part.

The multiple POVs from different characters provide readers with an insight to the progress of the story as they each play an important role. Each one is desperately trying to make a difference in a world that has rapidly changed. Since killing Shogun Yoritomo, Yukiko and Buruu find themselves firing up an uprising in the cities they come across on their travels. It has also created a mighty struggle for Yukiko as a deluge of power has swept through the Kenning. Meanwhile, Guildsman Kin is having difficulty with the other rebels. He doesn't have an ounce of trust in them and the feeling is returned. Not working as a cohesive unit, it will be a vigorous effort to try and bring down the Shima Empire and Guild. On the other side, a move by the Guild to place a new Shogun on the Imperial throne hopes to bring the four clans together.

Once readers indulge their imagination into this grand story, many emotions will arise. Enjoyment and hatred, heartbreak and distress, will and determination, all make the ingredients to produce such an oversized epic tale. The dark side of the story is what makes it so captivating. Kristoff's presentation of a world consisting of anguished people engaging in horrible things to each other in order to rid of oppression from their land, is wonderfully captured in refined writing. He puts words into shape that makes it easy to understand and at the same time, very intriguing and enjoyable. Actions by the characters are seized in perfection and readers will definitely feel their reactions to be realistic. Reader will also appreciate the fact that Kristoff is fearless when it comes to his characters. He will put them in the most horrible situations that your heart will twist in ways unimaginable. Kinslayer is what makes adventure and fantasy such an enjoyable read. The final installment is sure to make a thunderous impact on the lives of the characters, an impact that will also be felt dearly to readers.

So. Much. EMOTION.
By Candace Robinson
This book nearly did me in. So much emotion! It was a book that once I started reading I couldn't hardly look away but at the same time I could hardly stand to read it because it felt like my heart was being ripped out, over and over again. I felt like there was so much terror and pain and just, frustration. Just so many emotions all balled up. I loved people and I hated people and sometimes it was the same person that I'd love and hate all in the same moment. Things were just wild and crazy and it was just so hard to read, and so hard to look away!

Yukiko was great, but I have to admit that I wasn't feeling her at the start. I was frustrated with her, but as the story continued that frustration went away. This book draws in several different perspectives and while Yukiko is still a main character, her portions were somewhat small compared to the whole story. I initially was worried about this, I just wanted her and Buruu and that's it. But as I got to know some others they really grew on me. And I think it was important for us to see all the different perspectives and places. Because there were people in the palace, there was the Kage resistance and then there was Yukiko, who ended up somewhere else through much of it. So with the different POV's we got to see what was going on everywhere.

One thing that was ripping my heart out is that not all of the 'good guys' are always the 'good guys'. They sometimes do bad things and some actions and injustices had me screaming in my head. I wanted to reach in and strangle some people. Really, they ruined EVERYTHING. ARG. So this isn't actually a negative in the story, it was just something that got me all worked up. Which is actually a positive I guess. Even though it makes me angry... but I think you get my point.

The world building was fantastic, the characters were great and the whole thing was just brilliant. I'm not even sure what to say about the book. It was one of the most emotional books I've read this year. I am seriously worked up. And while the ending isn't really a cliffhanger, there's so much left to happen that it almost felt like it. Especially in regards to one character that I just have no idea what to think of. The twist, while we got hints to it, still caught me off guard. I just didn't believe it could really happen. I'm going to be dying until the next book. I really hope that things can work out!

Much, much better than the first book in this series!
By Karissa Eckert
I got a copy of this book to review through the Amazon Vine program. This is the second book in The Lotus Wars. The last book in this trilogy will be released some time in 2014 and is as yet untitled. I really wasn’t a fan of the first book in this series and just struggled through it. I had received this book for review and was dreading reading it; however this book is much, much better than the first one.

There are many storylines going on at once at the start of this book. Yukiko and Buruu are with the Kage’ now helping to plan the Kage’ plan their rebellion. Kin is with them trying to lend a hand as he can. Back at the Shogun’s palace Michi plots to overthrow the current contender for Shogun, who is surprisingly Hiro. Hiro has turned incredibly bitter towards Yukiko and is determined to wipe both her and the Kage’ off the face of the Earth.

This book is much, much better than the first book. The book follows multiple storylines, is epic in proportions, and actually has characters that we can engage with and love.

We meet a lot of new characters in this book, but we also finally get to learn more about and start to engage with some of the characters introduced in the first novel. The story doesn’t really focus on Yukiko but bounces between Yukiko, Kin, Hiro, Hida, Michi, and Yoshi. It is a lot of points of view to read from. However, all of the characters are very interesting and have a lot of depth to them which makes them interesting to read about. I enjoyed all the storylines and never found myself wishing that I could finish up with this character and move on to the next.

Yukiko is going through a lot of growing pains, literally, in this book. Her powers of Kenning are getting out of control and she desperately needs help, but doesn’t know where to get it. There is a little romance between her and Kin, but not much. Yukiko quickly ends up striking out on her own.

Kin is still being prosecuted by the Kage’ even though he is fighting for their cause. When another rebel Guildsman shows up wanting to join the cause, things get even worse. The Kage’ get suspicious and drive Kin and his visitor to desperate means.

We are introduced to a number of new characters as well. The main one is Hida, she works as a piss pot cleaning girl in the castle and ends up helping out the Kage’. Hida’s brother, Yoshi, also features in the story quite a bit. We also get to meet some new Thunder Tigers and learn some about Buruu’s past so that is pretty cool.

Hiro has turned into one mean guy, there were a number of times when his character gave me the chills. He is so righteous and so willing to trample anything or anyone that stands between him and revenge.

I feel the characters were much more well done in this book. I also felt like we got a better feel for the world and how the people interact with it in this book than we did in the last book. We actually get a chance to appreciate the world building more as we get deeper into the politics and see how a wider range of people live. There are steampunk elements here as well as dystopian elements, all set in a very Asian setting.

There are still some things I had trouble with. We switch viewpoint a lot and it broke up the story. It was also hard to tell whose viewpoint you were reading from at points...you would have to read a page or so and then you would finally able to figure out whose viewpoint you were reading from now. I also just have a lot of trouble reading Kristoff’s writing style, I just don’t like it...it doesn’t flow well for me and I really really have to concentrate to follow it.

This is not a happy book. It is very depressing at times. This book is about rebellion and Kristoff doesn’t pull his punches. His readers are immersed in the misery of the characters as they struggle to build a better world. They all think they are doing the right thing and all of them are willing to let innocents pay the price of a new world.

Overall this book was much better than the first one, which I really did not like. I thought the characters were much more engaging and I finally started to gain an appreciation for this complex world. This is not a happy book, but I did enjoy the intricate plot and the additional characters. I did still have a problem with the writing style and the incredible number of POVs, which really breaks up the story. I would tentatively recommend this to steampunk fans, however read the first couple chapters of the Stormdancer first and see if you can struggle through that before picking up this book.

We both are successful people who have achieved dreams. We've made lots ofmistakes and we've learnt from them. We've achieved things we are proud of andwe've raised the bar for ourselves. And we know lots of other successful peoplewho have inspired and influenced us in writing this book. We don't claim to begurus or visionaries, but we do claim that we know how to get things done. It'snot magic, it's not rocket science, but it is powerful. We share it with you inthis book.

The book is based on our own experiences, achieving our personaldreams as well as managing challenging projects for multinational companies. Weboth dreamt of becoming published authors - and we both are. We have climbedsteep mountains, traveled to exotic places, started a successful consultancycompany, broken a world record and much, much more. Our successful businessprojects were worth millions of dollars. Some had high probabilities of failureand impacted the lives of many people. We were lucky enough to do well as projectmanagers and deliver the results expected of us. But this is not only about thebig stuff. We've also achieved little dreams that matter to no-one else otherthan to ourselves. They are just as important.

We have each, independently, written and published books before, but it's the first time we have written a book quite like this. We've done ourbest to make it as useful and fun to read as possible. We were lucky to meetsome great people along the way, some of whom agreed to be guests in our bookand share their dreams with us and with you. Others made awesome illustrationswhich make the book look and feel warm and friendly. We're happy with the endresult. We hope it helps you.

Not your average self help guide
By Marte
Don't be deceived by the size of this book. It contains a wealth of practical advice for making your dreams become your reality. Since both authors are indeed living their dreams, they're well qualified to explain how to do it.

The authors advise reading the book all the way through first, to get a feel for what it is they are doing, and then going back and focusing on each chapter one by one. I found this to be good advice. Some of the methods they describe may be very unfamiliar at first, so it's worth re-reading the instructions and then trying out each technique for yourself to get the hang of it.

To get the most out of this book you will need to approach it with an open mind and a willingness to overcome inertia. You may need to learn something new (like mind mapping). But the success stories of the book's four "heroes" and its two authors will show you that it can be done. Those people put the method to the test and overcame a lot of obstacles to achieve their dreams.

My only quibbles are that (1) the book is written in UK English and the style may take some getting used to, for people who speak and read other English dialects, and (2) some of the techniques can really only be fully understood if you try them for yourself. The illustrations will help, but you really have to do it to learn it.

The push we need to get started
By Graham Coult
I found this book an excellent motivation to start turning ideas and wishes into action.

It's not a pie-in-the-sky exercise in new-age, aspirational, life-affirming messages but a call to action with positive practical tips seasoned with and some straight talking too:

"Firstly, analyze how you use your time. All of us have wasted time in our lives. Isn't your dream more important than watching TV or going to the cinema?"

"Never do nothing because you think: "oh I need three months to do this but I never have three months free"".

"Am I doing the work?It does not make sense to lie to yourself...are you making real, measurable progress in doing the work you've drawn up for yourself?"

There are three case studies which are visited in each chapter of the book - the case studies reinforce the practical tips, suggestions, ideas and techniques. The case studies tackle problems that are encountered, and how they are resolved.

Not long after starting this book I had an exercise book out (I bought I nice one specially) mapping projects that I had in mind. I've started taking action opportunistically when I have the time, and I am already making progress.

This is a great book to get you started on things you want to do, and sticking with them by not starting too many things at once.

The Americans at Normandy: The Summer of 1944--The American War from the Normandy Beaches to Falaise, by John C. McManus

In The Americans at D-Day, the first volume of this series, John C. McManus showed us the American experience in Operation Overlord. Now, in this succeeding volume, he does the same for the Battle of Normandy as a whole. Never before has the American involvement in Normandy been examined so thoroughly or exclusively as in The Americans at Normandy. For D-Day was only one part of the battle, and victory came from weeks of sustained effort and sacrifices made by Allied soldiers.

Presented here is the American experience during that summer of 1944, from the aftermath of D-Day to the slaughter of the Falaise Gap, from the courageous, famed figures of Bradley, Patton, and Lightnin' Joe Collins to the lesser-known privates who toiled in torturous conditions for their country. What was this battle really like for these men? What drove them to fight against all sense and despite all obstacles? How and why did they triumph?

Reminiscent of Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day, The Americans at Normandy takes readers into the minds of the best American strategists, into the hearts of the infantry, into hell on earth.

Engrossing, lightning-quick, and filled with real human sorrow and elation, The Americans at Normandy honors those Americans who lost their lives in foreign fields and those who survived. Here is their story, finally told with the depth, pathos, and historical perspective it deserves.

From Publishers Weekly
Long on engrossing combat vignettes but short on historical perspective, this fine-grained narrative covers some 80 days of the American campaign in France, from the bloody stalemate in the hedgerows to the decisive breakout and defeat of the German army in Normandy. In line with the Stephen Ambrose school of populist historiography that sees the campaign as the Greatest Generation’s finest hour, military historian McManus (The Americans at D-Day, etc.) challenges historians who have characterized the U.S. Army’s performance as sluggish, tactically inept and dependent on a colossal superiority in numbers and firepower over its German opponents. He does so by focusing on the battlefield exploits of small infantry units and individual GIs, whom he feels displayed plenty of drive and tactical ingenuity. These well-paced and often moving stories, based on veterans’ first-hand reminiscences, are full of blood and guts, squalor and heroism, pathos and despair, and they add up to an indelible portrait of the horror of war. But McManus’s conclusion that the Americans were "better soldiers" than the Germans is both unfair and untenable. The details of his account make clear that American infantry tactics did indeed rely on the crushing assistance of tanks, artillery and airpower. Meanwhile, he avoids meticulous comparisons of front-line strengths that would reveal how hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned the Wehrmacht was, while his exclusive interest in the American side neglects the tactical achievements German soldiers pulled off with incomparably skimpier resources. The many war stories McManus offers make for a gripping read, but they add up to a seriously biased picture of the Allied victory.

From Booklist
McManus, a professor of military history, follows up his widely praised Americans at D Day with a worthy successor. The narrative begins the day after the Normandy landings. There is a common misconception that, with the beachheads secured, success was a foregone conclusion, because of overwhelming Allied materiel and numerical superiority. McManus convincingly refutes that assumption. From the beaches to the hedgerows to the breakout and slaughter at the Falaise gap, the Americans fought bravely, effectively, and often brilliantly against a tenacious and well-led opponent. McManus seamlessly weaves the experiences of individual soldiers into the broader strategic picture. The result is a tough, inspiring, but often heartrending portrait of ordinary men compelled to do extraordinary things in combat. Jay Freeman

"Required reading on a bitter battle that won't be---and never should be---forgotten."
---W. E. B. Griffin on The Americans at D-Day and The Americans at Normandy

"Far more gripping than Saving Private Ryan. Comprehensively detailed...Utterly fascinating. McManus's style fits the slam-bang fighting that characterized one of the most crucial periods of the war, and he makes every battle---and every soldier---count as if it were the last round in the clip."

"I thought I knew something about war and men at war until I read John C. McManus's deeply insightful book. I stand humbled by what I consider nothing less than a definitive work on a subject whose scope is simply so vast that no writer until now has put it in perspective and made it real."

Best History on Americans in Normandy so far
By John Kwok
John C. McManus's "The Americans at Normandy" is the best work of history I've come across on the American role in the decisive battles comprising the Normandy campaign from the beaches of Normandy to the closing of the "Falaise Gap", which nearly suceeding in wiping out Nazi Germany's French army of occupation. McManus is a gifted storyteller, recounting numerous fascinating vignettes which showed how inexperienced American troops managed to hold their own against, and then finally defeat, a superbly trained force of Wehrmacht and SS soldiers. Although there have been many books devoted to the Normandy campaign, few have been as successful as McManus's book in rendering the events from the perspectives of those who fought in this campaign.

Though there isn't much in the way of significantly new historical research, I was certainly intrigued by McManus's poor assessment of General Omar Bradley as the overall commander of American forces. More than once, he indicates that Bradley wasn't as willing as his colleague General George S. Patton in waging an extremely aggressive campaign against the Nazis. Indeed the best instance of this is Bradley's own reluctance in closing the "Falaise Gap" by linking American troops with British and Canadian armies. If the gap had been closed successfully, McManus suggests that the war in Europe could have drawn to a close much sooner.

"The Americans At Normandy" is divided into three parts corresponding to each month of the campaign. "June" begins on June 7th, describing American attempts to expand the Omaha and Utah beachheads, followed by an ill fated attempt to seize the strategic town of St-Lo and the brutal assault on Normandy's largest port, Cherbourg. July describes much of the hedgerow fighting in Normandy's bocage country, the successful seizure of St-Lo, and the beginning of the breakout from Normandy at the end of July. August includes chapters devoted to the breakout and the ill-fated Nazi counteroffensive near the town of Mortain, followed by the nearly complete encirclement of Nazi troops in the "Falaise Gap". Most of the chapters are devoted to recounting what these battles were like from the perspectives of the front-line privates, noncommissioned officers, lieutenants and captains faced in dealing with a tenacious, determined foe.

An American perspective to a truly American story
By Mannie Liscum
With so many books written (many over the past few years) about D-Day, hedgerow fighting, and exploitation to drive the German war-machine back to the Fatherland, what makes John McManus' "The Americans At Normandy" special? In short, why should someone interested in World War II history pick up this book over any one of the plethora of other on the subject? Quite simply, "The Americans At Normandy" is a unique contribution to the genre as it brings material together from several distinct sources to tell a broad-portrait story of America's citizen soldiers and their fight to free Europe from the grips of fascism. Having said this, most of what McManus covers is not particularly new, nor does he shed new insight on old topics. Rather, McManus does what so few historians attempt, and so few other achieve - to tell an encompassing and gripping story that maintains historical depth while not causing mass sleep induction. Broad-portrait stories are most usually either shallow in depth, or deep but arduous reading. "The Americans At Normandy" falls into neither of these common traps!

McManus' first contribution to his Normandy duet, "The Americans At D-Day", was a solid book but lacked significant punch to set it apart from other works covering D-Day. Being American Army-centric one could also argue that "The Americans At D-Day" lacked depth necessary to convey the weight of the allied invasion of Europe in June 1944. However, with "The Americans At Normandy", McManus redeems himself wholly. Yes, McManus' second contribution is also American-centric but for this book he can be forgiven as the battles within, and breakout from, the bocage country involved the Germans and Americans almost exclusively - remember the Brits and Canadians were bogged down around and in Caen while the American Army slugged its way through the Cotentin, Upper Brittany and Bocage. In "The Americans At Normandy", McManus treats the reader to a detailed story of how the citizen army of the United States fought a tenacious opponent (seemingly always better on defense than offense) and drove a wedge through the tough crust to breakout into the plains of France and onto the Seine and Paris. This is a wonderful story, not told in such completeness of theatre and still from an American-centric position elsewhere.

In his acknowledgements McManus thanks his executive editor at Forge (press) for suggesting that McManus' work be broken into two volumes. As McManus himself states, "...this was fortunate...[and] reflects sage wisdom and knowledge of the publishing world and history in general". Indeed. McManus was fortunate to have an editor that suggested this approach. McManus did the work of researching and writing but the editors and publishers package the product. This was a joint venture for a home run!

This reviewer's critique of McManus' "The Americans At D-Day" (here at Amazon) was quite harsh in terms of credit given (or my perceived lack thereof) to researchers who walked the path before McManus. As a particular example this reviewer brought up the phenomenal work of Mark Bando in "Vanguard of the Crusade" which McManus used quite liberally in "The Americans At D-Day". Once again Bando's work comes into focus with "The Americans At Normandy". In this case McManus draws not only from "Vanguard" but also Bando's unique contribution to the Normandy literature - "Breakout At Normandy". But wait - unlike the apparent neglect to properly credit Bando's work in "The Americans At D-Day", McManus heaps praise on Bando's work in his notes to "The Americans At Normandy" (p. 464). Moreover, while McManus gave near-reverent thanks to "academic" historians in his acknowledgements to "The Americans At D-Day", while forgetting equally important historians not part of the ivory establishment (e.g., Bando), he includes these latter figures in his current acknowledgements - sandwiched amongst his academic peers. It thus appears that John McManus deserves this reviewers apology for previous suggestions that McManus played favorites with "academic historians" - I sincerely apologize!

In the end, John McManus' "The Americans At Normandy" is a tour-de-force book that provides a big picture of the American combat experience in Normandy, from D+1 (7 June 1944) until late August when the armored spearheads where rush across the French plains to Paris, that has not been presented previously. This is a serious piece of historical literature and will stand the test of time. Five solid stars!

An Outstanding Treatment of the Battle for Normandy - 1944
By Jay Gerak
McManus' detailing of the events of Normandy (post-D-Day landing) is just that - an awesome detailing of the struggles faced (and overcome) by the American Army in Normandy during the summer of 1944. I was struck by the absolutely appalling machine gun, mortar and HE fire that the American forces were required to endure in each and every hedgerow-bordered field they crossed. The lack of pre-planning by Allied commanders on how to effectively deal with an enemy entrenched in such ideal defensive positions is appalling. The number of lives lost due to such short-sightedness is sobering.

McManus' book does a great job of giving the background, setting the scenes and giving the reader the perspective of the men in the field. He liberally uses maps - but these are reproduced in the hardcover edition in a scale that is far too small to be as effective as they could be.

McManus' treatment of American leadership is honest and unvarnished. He - as could be predicted - discusses many of the Patton's foibles - but so have many other historians and biographers. I was struck by his less-than-admiring treatment of General Omar Bradley and Bradley's decisionmaking. McManus really takes Bradley to task for certain of his decisions regarding Operation Cobra and the northward pincer movement south of Falaise.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It makes me appreciate all the more the bravery shown by many American combat vets who were forced to learn - through trial and error at horrible cost - how to use combined arms to dislodge the entrenched Germans from Normandy's hedgerow country. Anyone interested in this theater of WWII should read this book.
