As people increasingly seek alternatives to modern medicine, interest is growing in the ancient system of Tibetan medicine, which has been practised for over 2,500 years. This concise introduction presents all the essential information on Tibetan medicine. It covers the basic theoretical principles, practice and history of this traditional system, as well as methods of diagnosis and treatments such as urine analysis, golden needle therapy and cupping. It includes a chapter on case histories and provides information on what to expect from a practising physician based on compassion. With a comprehensive resources section, this book provides everything there is to know about Tibetan medicine at an introductory level.

This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to know more about Tibetan medicine, as well as anyone looking to find out more about Tibetan thought, Tibetan Buddhism, traditional medicine, comparative religion or Eastern spirituality.

Review
"This authoritative overview of the principles of traditional Tibetan medicine is written by a fully qualified physician within that system. Tamdin Bradley has masterfully synopsised and translated the core 12th century text of this tradition, the Four Medical Tantra (rGyud-bzhi), into an easily understandable, accessible and relevant format. As she says herself 'The uniqueness of Tibetan medicine is that it is based on Buddhist philosophical principles, astrology and the close relationship between the mind and body.' She thereby opens this unique system to western academics, researchers and the ordinary person." -- Dr Brion Sweeney, Consultant Psychiatrist, Tara Rokpa Psychotherapist, Health Service Executive and former Clinical Director of Addiction Services, Greater North Dublin

Introduction to traditional Tibetan medicine
By Bernie Gourley
Full disclosure: let me first state that I’m a scientific-minded person and skeptic by nature, and if you’re expecting a review by a true believer, you may be disappointed.

A couple questions may arise from the disclosure above. First, why do I feel I need to make such a commentary? Well, because this is a book about a system of medicine (i.e. gso-ba rig-pa) that developed within a country that was isolated for centuries and in which every aspect of knowledge was infused with and influenced by religious belief—both pre-Buddhist and Buddhist. Because of this, while some of the advice offered is surely sound, some of it is—from a skeptic’s point of view—bat-shit crazy. For example, there are herbal and dietary preparations to aid in digestion that may be completely sound and reasonable, and then there is the idea that Zombie spirits (one of 18 types of evil spirits) cause constant shivering.

The second question is, “If I’m not a believer, why read the book and review it?” For one thing, as I indicated above, I don’t think that just because the beliefs behind the “theory” of this system of medicine are baseless, it means that there is nothing in the book that is true or of value. The theory is that there are three kinds of energy (Loong, mKhris-pa, and Bad-Kan) and that excesses or deficiencies cause health problems. But it’s a 2500 year old system of healing; certainly they learned a thing or two in the process. It’s quite possible that they have learned things that scientific medicine has not. (Consider for example, Tibetan Buddhist monks have repeated and verifiably demonstrated capabilities—i.e. consciously controlling autonomic systems, that Western medicine would have thought impossible.)

The analogy that I always use is with kid’s Christmas presents. Parents hide the presents, and tell the kids that if there’s any tampering with them the kid won’t get anything but a lump of coal (you say that was just my parents?) Anyway, the kids find the packages, but are afraid to invasively tamper with them. Therefore, they feel the heft of them, they shake them, and they listen to said shakes. From that limited investigation, they develop a theory. The theory may be spot on, it may be completely wrong, or over several gifts it’s probably a combination of wrong and right. However, the question of whether the present does what it’s supposed to (i.e. bring joy) is not closely connected to the child’s theory, because it’s based on the parent’s observation of what the kid likes. That, my friends, is why systems of healing that are based on notions that are empirically wrong sometimes produce good results.

Second, while I’m a believer in science, I don’t always believe that Western medicine (rooted in science as it may be) consistently does a good job. Part of this is the fault of economists, policy types, as well as lazy patients who’ve created a system in which medicine only pays off if it can cut one open or give one an expensive medication. This leaves room for alternative systems of medicine that may not be so scientific, but that allow for the fact that changing patient behavior is often key to improving health.

I’ve taken a long time to get to the actual review, but I thought the reader should know from whence this reviewer was coming. The book is a little under 200 pages long. Its 11 chapters are logically oriented, and it’s easy to navigate the book. The author writes in a readable style, and jargon and foreign terminology aren’t a problem. It doesn’t have an index, but each chapter is broken up into many smaller subunits--so finding what one is after shouldn’t be hard.

The chapters cover the history of Tibetan Medicine, the nature of gso-ba rig-pa, the theory of Tibetan Medicine, causes of illness, human anatomy and physiology (not of the physical body as we know it), common diseases and illnesses, treatment techniques involving changing diet and behavior, medicinal treatment, representative case histories, and the nature of the Tibetan Medicine physician.

It’s not clear who the target audience for this book is. It’s not a self-help book as the implication is that the patient should see a doctor of Tibetan Medicine and not self-prescribe. Furthermore, while the book provides a good overview of Tibetan Medicine, it’s not an all-inclusive description by any means. The book seems to have been written primarily to make individuals aware of Tibetan Medicine and to give enough insight into the system that readers can differentiate it from Traditional Chinese Medicine or Indian Ayurvedic Medicine, both of which display similarities and differences.

I’d recommend this book if you’re interested in alternative approaches to healing, or if you’re interested in Tibetan culture in detail.

Descent: A Memoir of Madness (Kindle Single), by David Guterson

From the best-selling author of Snow Falling on Cedars: a poignant, searching memoir about one man's fall into depression in the wake of a national tragedy, and his brave struggle to return to normalcy.
Like most of the country and the world, David Guterson woke up on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, not thinking history was about to change. He was in Washington, D.C., with a group of fellow writers, evaluating grant applications for the National Endowment of the Arts. But before their work day had even begun, the Pentagon was bombed; the Twin Towers were down in New York City; and havoc was wreaked irrevocably on our collective sense of happiness, security, and national pride. Scrambling to get out of the city and back home any way he could, David, along with two fellow writers, rented a car and drove 2,600 miles across the country to Seattle.  But the attacks triggered something inside him, a pervasive feeling of hopelessness, fear, despair--a clinical depression that that would not go away. He lost interest in his work, family, friends--his life. Inspired by William Styron's masterful Darkness Visible, Guterson's Descent is the searing account of one man's envelopment by the darkest of human emotions, and his tunneling out. Powerful, intense, and deeply felt, it is at once personal and universally illuminating--a confession from a great literary mind who takes us on a journey of what it feels like, and means, to lose one's grasp on the world--and to find it once more, even if by fumbling in the dark.

Ascent From Despair
By Teresa Willett
Guterson's account of his experience with Major depressive disorder is delivered in an exquisite, literary style that defies casual reading. As with his novels, each sentence appears so thoughtfully constructed, so replete with sublime description, that one can't help but linger over the beauty of his candid narrative, even as one absorbs something of his past despair. In what seems an attempt to "know thy enemy," Guterson first immerses himself in the ostensibly sage and/or experiential works of others (by both historical and contemporary authors) to glean what he can in the way of answers, expectations, and (as found in Styron's "Darkness Visible") a glimpse of self. When this sometimes punishing activity becomes too unsettling, he follows the traditional route of treatment (therapy and pharmacology), all the while trying to go through the motions of a meaningful existence. As difficult as it is to read about such subjects, it is essential that we recognize MDD for the serious illness it is. In this piece, we are rewarded with the author's renewed interest in life -- a development so remarkably subtle, it catches Mr. Guterson unawares.

The courage to be vulnerable
By Judith M Meloy
I ordered this book because, as a teacher and human being, I have dealt with many young people and more than several young men, who, being sensitive, creative, and bright have the tendency to "go deep." I read this book for insight, maybe possible clues for supporting their ability to get "out" of the deep.
What I recognized while reading, however, was in part an accurate description of my own contemporaneous madness, the spontaneous ranting at the news while driving or crying because something precious and seemingly inconsequential to those around me looms HUGE. Unlike biographies of famous authors/artists, etc., that describe the 'crash and burn', Mr. Guterson makes the experience accessible, almost 'normal' in the sense that I can imagine - and I think any reader will be able to imagine - and understand the questions, sense the descent.
I found I could not read this book "in the light of day" nor do I recommend it in a cold cognitive moment because it is a blend of mind and emotion that seeks out response from both in the reader, which means we, too, must be vulnerable and open to the telling.
I was also glad to read that Mr. Guterson got better, although the ending seemed hardly the point, and when it came, it was there and suddenly the book was over. I don't know what more I wanted, but I am left unresolved. Maybe that is the safety of the solution and a good thing, I really don't know.

In the end, then, I am glad I read and was open to the book David Guterson was willing to commit to writing. I was also glad to be finished with the book; it is a quick read. In a way, I felt a little more 'normal', a little less weird, and a lot more human. A good story makes us think about our humanity; a sincere telling allows us a closer glimpse at what - were we to be touched by all that surrounds us - we may be feeling.

So while I am very appreciative of this accessible book and rated it 4 stars, because I had been earlier touched by this author and his use of language, DESCENT is probably not the book for someone seeking 'cognitive guidelines' for 'what it looks like' and 'what to do about it'.

Interesting back story to Guterson's novels
By IDIrishbiker
This little self indulgent piece is interesting. Mr. Guterson reveals an emotional turmoil he endured following the attacks of 9/11. I'm glad I read this as I really enjoy Mr. Guterson's novels. I dare say; I could certainly have continued to enjoy the novels without this little confession. I'm not quite sure how anyone could recover from depression in a part of the country where it seems to rain 364 of 365 days yearly. Please send us more novels, Mr. Guterson.

The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible (Sacred Activism), by Charles Eisenstein

In a time of social and ecological crisis, what can we as individuals do to make the world a better place? This inspirational and thought-provoking book serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling, replacing it with a grounding reminder of what’s true: we are all connected, and our small, personal choices bear unsuspected transformational power. By fully embracing and practicing this principle of interconnectedness—called interbeing—we become more effective agents of change and have a stronger positive influence on the world.

Throughout the book, Eisenstein relates real-life stories showing how small, individual acts of courage, kindness, and self-trust can change our culture’s guiding narrative of separation, which, he shows, has generated the present planetary crisis. He brings to conscious awareness a deep wisdom we all innately know: until we get our selves in order, any action we take—no matter how good our intentions—will ultimately be wrongheaded and wronghearted. Above all, Eisenstein invites us to embrace a radically different understanding of cause and effect, sounding a clarion call to surrender our old worldview of separation, so that we can finally create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

With chapters covering separation, interbeing, despair, hope, pain, pleasure, consciousness, and many more, the book invites us to let the old Story of Separation fall away so that we can stand firmly in a Story of Interbeing.

Review
"This is a revolutionary and interactive book—in the sense that it inspires the reader to think out of the ordinary. Eisenstein will be noted in antiquity as one of the seminal and pioneering storytellers of this new world."
—Publishers Weekly Starred Review

“It is rare to find, in such digestible portions, so rich a feast for mind and heart."
—Joanna Macy, author of Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We're in without Going Crazy

“When I read Charles Eisenstein I felt as if I had just put on an extraordinarily clear, lucid, morally honest set of glasses. I see my outer and inner worlds in penetrating detail. He isn't just describing a possible world. He is helping us find our way to it.”
—Vicki Robin, author of Your Money or Your Life

“Charles Eisenstein is a cultural investigative journalist, questioning the perpetually unexamined assumptions of both conventional and counter-cultural thinking. He is a cultural storyteller, a visionary who gives us a glimpse of what the new Story of the People may look like, how we might get there, and how close we are to it.”
—Mark Boyle, author of The Moneyless Manifesto

“God damn this is good! This version of the big story by Charles Eisenstein is one of the best I have ever heard. Charles, you are speaking for millions of us and we so know what you are saying to be true. We will absolutely tell the whole fucking world about it.”
—Brad Blanton, author of Radical Honesty

“The more beautiful world I inhabit accords with Charles Eisenstein's vision: a world where we embrace the shadow and give it name so that the healing can begin. Take this book and let it seep into your very being.”
—Polly Higgins, author of Eradicating Ecocide, barrister and earth lawyer

“This book will change your world. It is beautiful because Charles Eisenstein has the courage to be vulnerable and it is in acknowledging our vulnerability that we will realize our greater humanity.”
—Revd Peter Owen-Jones, presenter of Around the World in 80 Faiths, author, and priest

"One does not 'read' this book, but rather interacts with it. And take heed, it will open your heart and mind, arouse ire and derision, and change the way you think about your life. Beautifully written, heart-warming, and thought-provoking, Eisenstein will undoubtedly be noted in history as a pivotal storyteller."
—New Conciousness Review

On Sacred Economics
"This brilliant and beautifully written book is a must-read for all those who believe our economic system is terminally sick and in need of radical, sacred rehaul. I hope this book begins a serious, worldwide conversation on how we can reinvent our attitude to money."
—Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism

On The Ascent of Humanity
"Brilliant and original, with great depth of insight and understanding. The Ascent of Humanity easily ranks with the works of such giants of our age as David Bohm, Julian Jaynes, Jean Gebser, Alfred North Whitehead...."
—Joseph Chilton Pearce, author of The Crack in the Cosmic Egg

“A powerful pick for any who would combine spiritual perspectives with social change. This book thwarts cynicism and offers keys to connecting personal choices to powerful change. … An uplifting, inspirational, spiritual and social examination recommended for a wide range of readers looking for positive encouragement.”

The author of Sacred Economics and, Ascent of Humanity, he currently lives in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.

The Way To the Answer To Everything...No Kidding
By Melanie H. Rummel
No words I could write will do justice to this work of heart by Charles Eisenstein. It is, without question, the most important book I've read in my 6 decades of life ( I have read hundreds) although surely each has been "the next step" in my coming to this one. I will be giving this book to every close relationship I have, not just those whose experience has been easy, and certainly not knowing if it will be "the next step" for him/her. No matter. This book has put all the missing pieces together for this formerly dismayed, yet somehow-still-hopeful, seeker of solutions for (what I have previously viewed as) a world gasping for breath. My fiancé is now reading it and is having his mind blown, too. As two seriously committed activists for a healthy, peaceful planet, and human beings trying to dance to the tune of "cosmic unity", we have often felt like two cripples on an arduous journey, finding it difficult to walk, much less leap for joy. We now understand that with a frequency that frankly made us ache to acknowledge, we've unknowingly viewed the complexity of family, business, community and world problems (and those we blamed) through what Charles calls the Story (and thus the perspective) of Separation. Wholey changed by absorbing his message, I must say that reading it feels more like "remembering" something I've always deeply known, like a forgotten name on the tip of one's tongue, that when retrieved, elicits an exhuberant inner "Yes!" We are beginning to walk on wobbling legs the New Story of Interbeing Charles eloquently unfolds, and while not naive to our challenges, are thrilled at the possibilities for us all. My greatest "thank you" to Charles Eisenstein will be to truly integrate this Story of Reunion into my life and let the ripple effect begin. By the way, I've never written a review for a book before and do not receive any compensation from its sale, but do except to enjoy a global increase of love that will surely follow its exposure.

Encouraging, and raises questions about details
By D. Hazen
I have enjoyed previous short quotes from Eisenstein that were taken out of context. This is the first time I have read one of his books. At first, I had difficulty adapting to the dry, abstract style. Eisenstein writes with a great deal of logic and includes some anecdotal evidence, as if he were proving a theorem in a debate, which he does very well. I found myself in agreement with every one of his points. In fact, I have suggested this book to many of my friends. As one of the "old hippies" from the '60's that he discusses toward the end of the book, I too have struggled, and still struggle, with despair. I was mostly encouraged by his pointing out that the younger generation is more apt to grasp the significance of the New Story. My hope for this book was that it would end with more prescriptive advice than "be the change you wish to see in the world" (Gandhi), so I was a bit let down. I tend to think in practical, engineering strategies for social change. There are available specific methods for working with our shadow side, to bring forth our light, and although Eisenstein names a few of them, I think it would have been helpful to be more detailed in pointing out their commonalities as well as their differences. I would like to have read more about the details of his personal story, of how he himself experienced and struggled with his own transformation.

Couldn't put down this compelling and provocative look at what is and what might be
By c.m.boyd
Read this book if you know there’s a better way to live, a way that restores connections to each other and connections to the earth; a way in which we were born to live; a way that we used to live but have long abandoned. Read this book if you want this way to be illustrated for you and colored in with vibrant hues. Read this book if you want some direction on how to get there.

Charles seems to have learned important lessons after writing two other extremely provocative books on how we got to where we are and how to make radical and not-so-radical changes (Ascent of Humanity and Sacred Economics). Since publication of those books, he speaks all over the world about them. I have read all three books now.

This third book, The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible, makes me think of Charles Eisenstein as a modern-day Annie Sullivan—prodding a willfully blind, dumb, mute and emotionally immature culture to recognize knowledge buried deep within, which, once recognized, will change life forever. It feels as though, through the questions and rebuttals he’s received on his travels, he now knows his audience, and how to speak with us.

When I read The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible, I got the sense that Charles has learned that we are all Helen groping in the dark. We are impertinent but teachable--ignorant but questioning. And so he has to take us back to the place where maybe we will recognize something—a spark that he treats so gently that, rather than fanning it out, by the end of the book it has grown to stand on its own, turning to ash the hard wood of our outmoded beliefs.

With his musical prose, right in the book’s beginning he takes us by the shoulders and assures us that once upon time, where we came from was a place where people didn’t compete, didn’t hoard retirement funds, didn’t have to buy recycling buckets, didn’t have to enact laws to keep the air and water clean, didn’t turn on TV or the internet for some vague and meaningless social connection. In other words, we are living an aberrant lifestyle. We haven’t progressed. Well, we have progressed in a certain sense and in an important sense—but we have bought that progress with Separation. Now it is time for Reunion and Interbeing, and they are beckoning us at this particular time.

And, importantly, he recognizes that in order to make his case for an exodus from this aberration, he has to peel back layers and layers of thoughts and beliefs that will keep us stuck in Helen’s blind and dumb world. And that’s exactly what he does in this book.

What helps is his modest downplay of his qualifications. He doesn’t claim to be Moses or Christ. Nor does he claim to have credentials in quantum physics. He’s not Einstein or Margaret Mead and he tells us that right off the bat. Rather, a theme running through the book is a very humble sentiment: if I can think this, and if I can believe in it, anyone can. He reminds me almost of the self-recriminations of St Teresa in Interior Castle, telling her “dear sisters” how inadequate she is for the task of taking us all on the journey to our God-self. Eisenstein does the same thing, exhorting his “dear readers” to understand that he is simply one person describing one world that seems crazily unlike the one we’re in, a world of Union and Beauty. Despite my humble status, he tells us, I have some ideas to present to you on how to move from the Age of Separation to the Age of Interbeing, to the Age of Reunion. But hey, I’m just one of you all, and we’re all in this together. “Enlightenment,” he says, “is a group activity.”

In Charles’ weaving of the story of Interbeing he becomes apologist for both cynic and dreamer. And in doing so, he gives us an example of how we might straddle the space between Separation and Reunion in order to come to the place where we can understand without judging; accept without capitulating.

Each chapter has a theme, such as “Separation,” “Force,” “Reality,” “Hope,” “Judgment,” “Miracle,” etc. Each of these chapter themes are a layer of the onion he peals away to prod our resistant minds to overcome current beliefs in order to see what there might be. Indeed, not which might be, but what is, and that which we simply cannot see from our vantage point—a view obscured by mountains of “the way things are.” From this vantage point, we are the proverbial clueless frogs in the pot of water, not conscious of the water heating up and not conscious of the life beyond--if we dare to open our eyes—and then to leap.

So, my own reading experience ran parallel to the themes—and my mind became a concoction of curiosity, doubt, cynicism, separation, naivete, disruption of my beliefs. And hope. And joy.

And tears. Because it’s poignantly reassuring to read The More Beautiful World and go from *yes*, this is difficult to envision, and *no*, no one person has the key (certainly not the humble author), and *yes*, if we simply perform small acts with integrity the world might change and *no*, it’s not easy given the quicksand we’re in, but *yes!*, isn’t it exciting to imagine--because by imagining, maybe we will invoke the reality of a new world!...

…And *no*, you can’t pursue this dream without cutting the hard wires, the very hard wires of Separation that have been soldered and resoldered on our souls and our minds by virtue of our inherited belief systems over the past millennia.

But if we can prod ancient knowledge that runs deep in the aquifers of our souls and find a crack in the rock of our assumptions, we will be on the road to The More Beautiful World. We will learn language to move forward. We will have uttered “wah-wah” at the pump, and have thus have started the journey. Not to the *most* beautiful world, which is too fantastical and hard to wrap our minds around, but to the *more* beautiful world, which we all can work on. It’s possible, and it's achievable--individually and collectively. And this book shows us how.

Strangers at My Door: A True Story of Finding Jesus in Unexpected Guests, by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove

Jesus Told Us Where to Find Him. Just Look for an Outcast.

His first followers knew that Jesus could be found with the fatherless, the widows, and the hungry and homeless. He said that he himself was a stranger, and commended those who welcomed him. If he really meant these things, what would happen if you opened your door to every person who came with a need?

Jonathan and Leah Wilson-Hartgrove decided to find out. The author and his wife moved to the Walltown neighborhood in Durham, North Carolina, where they have been answering the door to anyone who knocks. When they began,  they had little idea what might happen, but they counted on God to show up.

In Strangers at My Door, Wilson-Hartgrove tells of risks and occasional disappointments. But far more often there is joy, surprise, and excitement as strangers become friends, mentors, and helpers. Immerse yourself in these inspiring, eye-opening accounts of people who arrive with real needs, but ask only for an invitation to come in.

You will never view Jesus and the people he cares about the same way again.

Q&A with Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, author of Strangers at My Door

Q) Jonathan, you and your wife opened Rutba House, a Christian community that welcomes visitors, guests, neighbors, and strangers, 10 years ago. Tell us about what inspired the concept and the name of this idea.

A) In the spring of 2003, we were in Baghdad with a Christian peacemaker delegation. Our country was bombing Iraq, but we were overwhelmed by the hospitality they showed us. Outside of a town called Rutba, a car in our caravan hit a piece of shrapnel in the road, blew its tire, and careened into the side ditch. Three of our friends split their heads open. When they stumbled out of the ditch to the roadside, they didn’t know what to do. But some Iraqis stopped, took them into their car, and drove them to a doctor in Rutba. This doctor said, “Three days ago your country bombed our hospital, but we will take care of you.” He saved our friends’ lives.

We came back to the US in 2003 telling that story, and the more I told it, the more I realized that it was the Good Samaritan story. The people who were supposed to be our enemies had stopped by the roadside to save our friends’ lives. They were the Good Iraqis, the Good Muslims. We moved to Durham, NC, that summer and started Rutba House as a house of hospitality to put into practice the welcome we’d received in Rutba.

Q) You recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Rutba House. What’s changed in the decade you’ve been part of this experience? What do you have for the next 10 years?

A) Looking back, we didn’t know what we were doing when we started here. The gift of our first decade has been friends—the people who’ve welcomed us and helped us figure out what we’re doing. When we started we were three outsiders—re-locators to the neighborhood. People were naturally suspicious. The guys on the street said we were a "police house." But we welcomed a brother who was coming home from prison, and he ended up being our host in the neighborhood, introducing us to half of the people we know.

Ten years ago, we put a lot of energy into connecting. We sat on front porches talking to neighbors, and we invited people over for big potluck dinners four nights a week. We had to work to establish rhythms that are sustainable for everyone. We had to die and get resurrected a few times. But as I think about the next ten years here, I think we have a lot of work to do for justice. We want to stand with these beautiful people who’ve shared their lives with us. And many of them face huge challenges—criminal convictions that keep them from getting a job, the stigma of a story they want to change. We still get to know new people every week, but a lot of our energies these days are spent keeping up with the extended family of Rutba House and learning with and from them what kind of world we need to work for.

Q) Can you share a story or two about some of your first visitors? Are any of them still involved with Rutba House today?

A)The brother I mentioned who came home from prison and welcomed us to the neighborhood—he rents the apartment next door to our first house, owns his own cab company, and stops by for dinner (and to do his laundry) every few days. So, yes, several folks are still around. Not all of these are "success stories." One dear brother who lived with us for a year was stabbed on the street just a few weeks ago. We met him when we first came to the neighborhood, and he’s taught me so much about what it means to learn to trust someone across the lines that so often divide us. But, wow, I was angry when I heard that he got in another fight and was nearly killed.

Life in a hospitality house is messy. Or maybe life here is just a little more honest, and all of us are a mess in one way or another. We’ve learned that there are lots of things we can’t fix, but there’s not anyone we can’t love. And, as Dorothy Day used to say, "love is the measure by which we’ll be judged."

Q) What have you learned from the people you’ve welcomed in the name of Jesus?

A) Little by little, I think I’m learning what it means to be human. The strangers who’ve showed up at my door and walked into our life have helped me to see that my fears do me a great disservice. They often separate me from the very people I need to help me find my way. I think this is what Jesus was getting at when he said, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

Sometimes I think about the difference between me and most of our guests is the difference between people in the ER and people on the cancer ward at a hospital. You know, if you come in with a flesh wound, everybody knows you’re messed up. But if you have cancer it’s a hidden wound. Something has to reveal the problem if you’re going to have any hope of healing.

People who become homeless have flesh wounds that everyone can see. Most of them don’t try to hide their junk. Sharing life with them, I’ve learned to be more honest about my own hang-ups. They’ve forced me to. Without these friends, I might have easily wrecked my marriage on the shores of ambition. But the Jesus at our door is always reminding me that what I’m about in the world is bigger than me. We need one another to survive and we stay together by grace.

Review
Praise for Strangers at My Door

“Strangers at My Door is not only an invitation into the life of a hospitality house; it’s an invitation into real Christianity. By that I mean the radical inclusivity of Jesus that embraces and fights for the ones mainstream society shuns and abhors and terminates without batting an eye. It is, in short, an invitation for each of us to open our lives to the stranger and become more fully human.”
—Sister Helen Prejan, author of Dead Man Walking

“We Franciscans are always happy and impressed when other folks discover what we were supposed to be known for! The Franciscan ‘charism’ never dies and always re-emerges in fresh form—because it is the very ‘marrow of the Gospel’. Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove is teaching you how to live that Gospel in our time, and in such fresh and alive ways.”
—Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., academic dean of the Living School for Action and Contemplation, Center for Action and Contemplation

“Fifty years ago, when the Civil Rights movement came to Mississippi, I saw the wisdom of the approach that says, ‘Go to the people. Live with them. Learn from them.’ Those young people did what Jesus had done, and black folks from the South were able to change America and say, ‘We've done it ourselves.’ Jonathan and his friends at Rutba House have joined that same quiet revolution, and they are not alone. They give me hope that America may yet be born again.”
—John M. Perkins, founder of the Christian Community Development Association

“With elegant prose honed by brutal honesty, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove provides a theological account of what it means to welcome the stranger—strangers who often turn out to lack any gratitude. Wilson-Hartgrove’s narrative gives one hope as he refuses to be defeated by ungratefulness.”
—Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke University

Insightful and engaging
By Tiffany Malloy
Every now and then I read a book that I can’t put down. The stories not only capture my full attention, but I’m left thinking about the characters long after the book is over. Strangers at my Door: An Experiment in Radical Hospitality, written by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, is a book that sucked me into the beautiful mess of living in a hospitality house.

For those unfamiliar with that term, hospitality houses are homes that always have open doors for whoever may need it. There are people in these homes who are long-term community members, but they also have people who come and go. The purpose of the hospitality house is to welcome the stranger, just as Jesus welcomed us. For many, this sounds like an awful, terrifying idea. It goes against everything we believe in- what about the issues of safety and privacy and nuclear family , etc etc? In this book, Jonathan talks about some of those through the stories of people and situations that he has experienced in the hospitality house that he started in Durham, North Carolina.

More than this, however, he tells the stories of the strangers who have taught him more about God than what he could have learned by sitting through a sermon or listening to a podcast of a great preacher. He tells stories of the strangers who have turned into close friends and second family. How does a Washington-bound twenty-something end up raising a small family in a house full of people who are very unlike him?

Jonathan also does a fantastic job of weaving the theological foundation of welcoming the stranger throughout this book. The book is more than stories in that way that it makes the reader confront his or her thoughts and feelings towards the type of hospitality that goes beyond the idea of inviting a new family in the neighborhood over for pot roast. It’s a challenging book in that way.

A book to come back to again and again
By Samuel H. Burr Jr.
I think someone may have already described Jonathan's book as lived theology. It is a good description. These stories of people who have come through the door of their hospitality house help me to see lived out what it means to befriend the stranger and welcome her or him into a loving community. So this is what it looks like! There is nothing pollyanna in these stories. Not every story has a good ending. This road, this way of following Jesus is not portrayed as an easy way to live. It is a hard road Jonathan writes about here. But it is clearly portrayed as a journey of love where one can find Jesus and the soul rest he promised as well. Because I miss so much of the glory and wonders of each day, I pray often asking God to help me see outbreaks of God's love that I otherwise would miss. In these stories I find many moments of joy, awakenings of hope. I am grateful for what these stories have to teach me.

Supreme Challenge
By MasterAP
What would happen if you opened your house to every person who stopped by?

Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove provides a collection of personal stories when he does exactly what Jesus calls: taking care of the fatherless, the widowed, the hungry and the homeless.

With a tendency to feel like Blue Like Jazz, this book is a group of stories tied into a narrative whole. You will be glued to the pages as you read about how crazy Jesus-like hospitality can be.

There is no doubt you will be challenged as you read. You may find yourself thinking, "There is no way I would raise a family in this type of situation". When we hear horror stories about the human condition - it seems evil is on the rampage, This book unveils how beautiful human beings can be to one another.

The stories, the people involved and the indirect challenge from Wilson-Hartgrove will ferment in your brain long after you've passed this book on to your friends.

If nothing else, hopefully it will cause you to treat that neighbor a little bit better.

Amazon.com Review
Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli's first picture book stars a flop-eared young pup who loves to spend time with his father when he gets home from work. Little wonder! Dad has plenty of energy at day's end for playing the harmonica, wrestling, planting tomatoes, making gingerbread men, and even for household chores: "When the house breaks,/ we have to fix it./ My job is to carry/ the toolbox/ and hand Daddy the hammer./ He says I'm his best helper." On the rare occasion, his dad is too pooped to play: "But never, ever is my daddy too tired/ to sing me a lullaby/ when it's time/ for bed." Seymour Chwast's thickly textured, color-saturated paintings of the goofy dog pair render the affectionate father-son bond tangible. Young children will surely be comforted by this warm, simple tribute to Dadkind. (Preschool) --Karin Snelson

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Spinelli's first picture book tells a simple, warm story of the activities shared between a canine and his offspring. The tale opens with the pup anxiously awaiting his father's return from work and anticipating all the things they'll do together. When Daddy arrives, briefcase in hand and newspaper under arm, he swings his son onto his shoulders, and then lets him pretend to drive the car to Kalamazoo, right there in the driveway. The two wrestle on the living room floor, make cookies, plant tomatoes, and work around the house. And at the end of the day, no matter how worn out Daddy is, he's never too tired to sing the youngster a lullaby. This father is just about as close to perfect as a child could imagine. The childlike art and the bright palette make the yard and house seem quite homey, with squares, stripes, and checkerboard motifs on furnishings and walls lending textural detail to the large paintings. An appealing read-aloud.

From Booklist
PreS-K. An exuberant jacket showing an identically marked dog and puppy introduces the canine protagonists of this warm story about a special father-son relationship. The son relates how he looks forward to his daddy's return from work and proceeds to describe all the things they do together: make music, bake cookies, and fix things. It's the colorful, broad-brushed paintings that wag the dog (and the story) here, and the use of dogs instead of human characters adds bounce and playfulness to the proceedings. As it happens, dogs are not even mentioned in the text; there's also no reference to a mother. It's just a "guy" thing here: "We wrestle. We play magic. We bake cookies. We stand on our heads. We get tired. But my daddy is never too sleepy to sing me a lullaby." The large images, set against colorful backgrounds, and the uncomplicated narrative convey a pleasing, childlike enthusiasm that makes the story a nice choice for small groups as well as for lap sharing. I mean, it's so so. The art isn't as cute as I thought it would be. Story is boring. Kid doesn't really care for it.

The fun and the practical things about daddie.
By Steven
My Daddy and Me
In My Daddy and Me, Newbery medalist Jerry Spinelli has written a book in praise of both the fun things and the practical things about daddies. The two characters in this joyous book are a brown-and-white doggy daddy and his boy doggy. The book opens as the little doggy waits for his daddy to arrive home from work. When daddy arrives home with his briefcase and newspaper, the little doggy runs out to meet him and the fun begins. They play hide and seek, then magic show, and the little doggy gets to pretend to drive his daddy's car. But they also bake cookies together, plant tomatoes, fix the house (little doggy's job is to carry the toolbox and hand Daddy the hammer), and Daddy even gives little doggy a haircut.

In short, even though Daddy likes to play with his son, he also does the practical jobs of keeping a household and raising a child. This sets My Daddy and Me apart from other children's books that celebrate daddies for playing with their children but often leave out the other roles of being a parent. The roughly painted scenes gives the book a childlike and friendly feel, and My Daddy and Me ends on a note both sentimental and realistic: "Work makes daddy tired. Sometimes he's too tired to play tag with me or to stand up straight. But never, ever is my daddy too tired to sing me a lullaby when it's time for bed."

Deserves a place on any school or community library picturebook shelf
By Midwest Book Review
Fathers and sons are celebrated in Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli's latest, joining with graphic designer Seymour Chwast to celebrate the time of day when Daddy comes home to be with his kids. Dogs are the characters representing father and son in this whimsical survey which arrived too late for Father's Day mention, but which deserves a place on any school or community library picturebook shelf.

Review
“Written in the tradition of Charles Frazier and Ron Rash, Lambs of Men is that most rare of books: a violently beautiful story that is, at heart, a work of prose poetry.” —Mark Powell

A lyrical feat
By S.K. York
Lambs of Men is a beautifully written work from Charles Dodd White. It describes the return of a Great War veteran to his hometown in the Appalachian mountains, following his mother's death; when he arrives, Hiram finds the ghost of the life he left behind. The landscape and people are painted with heartfelt realism and subtle grace. The author vividly captures the values, ways, dialect and humour of North Carolina mountain folk. He does not shy from the poignant hardship and isolation of a place and time still living in local memory. Yet the novel moves far beyond regional and historical themes. Lambs of Men is a book about the spaces between fathers and sons, longing and loss, past and present, military and civilian, husbands and wives, life and death, violence and love. It is at heart a deeply American, and undeniably human story.

Lambs of Men
By Rosemary Royston
Lambs of Men is  literary fiction, prose rich with poetic lines, such as,  “The birds had whispered her name at daybreak, the moment when shade mated with sun and the world was born" -- one of my favorite lines in White's lyrical novel.  Lambs of Men is set in the 1920’s with the main character, Hiram, returning home from war to recruit other men to serve.  However, Hiram becomes enmeshed in dealing with past family hurts, and the plot progresses from there, with three points of view weaved into the story.   The book claims to be a story about fathers and sons, and while it is about that deep and often dangerous relationship, it is also about a woman’s relationship to her sons – whether blood-sons or a man in need of mothering.  True to human nature, characters in Lambs of Men make assumptions of others – in particular those they are close to by either blood or marriage – and only we, the readers, realize that these assumptions are often inaccurate.  White's language and the structure of this novel make an combination that is rare and beautifully done.

"Lambs of Men" is a beautifully wrought, rigorous work, its language forged in the fiery mind of a true artist.

Ghosts Know, by Ramsey Campbell

Ramsey Campbell's Ghosts Know is a fascinating exploration of the twists and turns of reality-media personalities, the line between the dead and the living…and how the truth can be twisted to serve all manner of reality.
Graham Wilde is a contentious, bombastic host of the talk radio program Wilde Card. His job, as he sees it, is to stir the pot, and he is quite good at it, provoking many a heated call with his eccentric and often irrational audience. He invites Frank Jasper, a purported psychic, to come on the program. He firmly believes that the man is a charlatan, albeit a talented one. When Jasper appears on his show, Wilde draws upon personal knowledge about the man to embarrass him on air, using patter similar to that which Jasper utilizes in his act.

Wilde's attack on Jasper earns him the enmity of his guest and some of the members of his audience. He next encounters Jasper when the psychic is hired by the family of a missing adolescent girl to help them find her. Wilde is stunned and then horrified when Jasper seems to suggest that he might be behind the girl's disappearance.
Thus begins a nightmarish journey as circumstantial evidence against Wilde begins to mount, alienating his listeners, the radio station, and eventually, his lover. As Wilde descends into a pit of despair, reality and fantasy begin to blur in a kaleidoscope of terror….

From Booklist
Graham Wilde is an opinionated and troublemaking talk-radio host, and he’s just been told to kick it up a notch by his producer in the interest of impressing the station’s buyers. Inviting Frank Jasper, a so-called psychic, to be on his show seems like the perfect opportunity to do just that. When Wilde uses Jasper’s fake psychic tricks, and a shared history, to expose him as a charlatan on air, he enrages many of his listeners—and entertains others. He’s gone too far, though: when he next encounters Jasper, the “psychic” manipulates circumstantial evidence to apparently point to Wilde as a murderer. Wilde’s reactions to this perceived threat—and the reactions of his colleagues and fans—all lead to increasing alienation and despair for Wilde. Ghosts Know is an interesting exploration of a very particular, internalized type of psychological horror; Wilde’s spiral into paranoia and rage is abrupt and unnerving. Campbell’s prose is sure enough to pull the story along steadily, despite the unreliability and confusion of the narrator. --Regina Schroeder

Review

"Campbell is in top form, cleverly pulling readers’ strings at every turn."―Publishers Weekly

Creeping menace and literary sleight-of-hand
By Gary Fry
Ramsey Campbell's fiction is not for those who like their thrills served up in a conventional manner. Although cleanly pared down, his prose is complex and suggestive, requiring keen attention to earn its copious rewards. But once it all clicks into place, there really is no equal. Reading Campbell as his best -- and in his later work (including Ghost Knows), that's what he often is -- is an experience and not just a quick reading diversion. His stories commonly involve meandering plots where nothing is quite what it seems. In Ghosts Knows, Campbell draws upon almost Hitchcockian pacing skills developed in fine, earlier crime novels (The Count of Eleven, Silent Children, The Last Voice They Hear) and serves up some seriously troubling and, ahem, eye-wateringly dark delights. You'll see. Another fine contribution to a branch of the genre that is almost the exclusive domain of Ramsey Campbell.

(I bought the original PS Publishing version of this novel.)

Not your typical Campbell, if there is a typical Campbell.
By Zakk @ The Eyes Of Madness
I have to say it's not what I expected going in. I really enjoyed the back and fourth between Frank and Graham in what was at it's core a very interesting story. Graham trying to expose a phony psychic while said psychic tries in influence Graham as a suspect in a disappearance/ murder. And had Graham responded in a more believable/ cooperative manner I may have been more involved in the tale. As it is, Ghosts Know is an interesting character study of people in aggressive/ confrontational media.
