If you are new to acupuncture and have had your fill of descriptions of syndromes and management, then this will be a refreshing read. Those who have been practising for some years will also find it a useful book because it encourages reflection f what you started out to do how you now carry out your treatments and the evolution of your management of your patients. Acupuncture for New Practitioners is not only a book about how to develop your practice, but also one about developing yourself as a practitioner. It increases your empathy with your patients, and describes how your working practices may sometimes impinge on your ability to get the best from each situation. -- Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists It would never occur to me to reach for a book like this. And yet, I can easily say that Acupuncture for New Practitioners by John Hamwee has had the most positive impact on how I practise since I qualified, and that these results have been immediate...Aimed primarily at the recently qualified, this book is recommended for any acupuncturist needing a bit of advice or inspiration. -- European Journal of Oriental Medicine. Vol 7. No.2. 2012. This is a thoughtful, practical and inspirational guide addressing many of the common issues that arise in the first years of practice. Using questions to help focus the reader and meaningful anecdotes to illustrate the journey to be travelled, John develops a blue print for holistic development. It is a delight to read and will aid the path to artistry and mastery in one's professional role. How I wish it had been available to me in my early days of practice! -- Alison Gould, acupuncturist and Accreditation Officer for the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board Acupuncture for New Practitioners is an acupuncture book like no other. It addresses intangible qualities that cannot be measured by test scores. Rather than tell us what to think or what to do, this wonderfully honest book by a wise and experienced practitioner instructs us on how to think and, perhaps more importantly, how to be. Every chapter contains pearls of wisdom, gently yet firmly guiding us toward finding our own truth, both as practitioners and as human beings. The author reminds us to be present in every moment and dares us to continue to learn and grow. He provides a pathway for fostering compassion, competence, and confidence, and for transforming knowledge and skill into wisdom. This book will prove invaluable not only for new practitioners but also for those of us with decades of experience. -- Eugene London, DAOM, Dipl.Ac. (NCCAOM), L.Ac. I can easily say that Acupuncture for New Practitioners by John Hamwee has had the most positive impact on how I since I qualified, and that these results have been immediate... Hamwee uses his experience of both his own development as a practitioner and of teaching recently qualified acupuncturists to offer nine chapters of very practical advice. The tone is kindly, almost avuncular, and the pages are filled with personal stories and anecdotes... this book is recommended for any acupuncturist needing a bit of advice or inspiration. -- Mel Koppelman, acupuncturist The European Journal of Oriental Magazine, EJOM

Autism and the Edges of the Known World: Sensitivities, Language and Constructed Reality, by Olga Bogdashina

In this intelligent and incisive book, Olga Bogdashina explores old and new theories of sensory perception and communication in autism. Drawing on linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology and quantum mechanics, she looks at how the nature of the senses inform an individual's view of the world, and how language both reflects and constructs that view.

Examining the 'whys' and 'hows' of the senses, and the role of language, Olga Bogdashina challenges common perceptions of what it means to be 'normal' and 'abnormal'. In doing so she shows that autism can help to illuminate our understanding of what it means to be human, and of how we develop faculties that shape our cognition, language, and behaviour. In the final chapter, she explores phenomena often associated with the paranormal - including premonitions, telepathy and déjà vu - and shows that these can largely be explained in natural terms.

This book will appeal to anyone with a personal or professional interest in autism, including students and researchers, clinical practitioners, individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, teachers, speech and occupational therapists, and other professionals.

Review
Olga Bogdashina beautifully presents the case for autism being, essentially, a difference in the way we process sensory information... it is refreshing to read a book where an academic freely speaks her mind, and this is a valuable book to have towards the ongoing explanation of what autism is and how to see the world through our eyes. -- Asperger United 'Recognition of difference is, in essence, what this brave book is about. The author, who has worked extensively in the field of autism as a teacher, lecturer and researcher, and has an adult son with autism, draws on ideas from a wide range of disciplines, finding, for instance, that explanations for some of the peculiarities of sensory perception in autistic people can be found in works of anthropology and philosophy dating back a century or two... Autism isn't always about having deficits or having less; sometimes it is about having more. I was particularly interested in the section showing how autistic people can actually 'resonate' with their surroundings much more than 'normal' people can... At the end of this stimulating and highly readable book, Bogdashina comes back to the restricting stance of the official scientific community, which is "so opposed to anything conceived as supernatural that those who genuinely try to understand these (not necessarily supernatural but yet unexplained) phenomena are afraid to speak out... She makes a plea for more open-mindedness and for a greater willingness to learn from autism about different ways to experience the world around us.' -- Human Givens Whether your interest in autism is personal or professional, this magnificent book will appeal to you. The author Olga Bogdashina has worked widely on matters to do with the condition. She is a teacher, researcher and lecturer. She lectures around the world. She was recently in Inverness and is an inspiring and motivational speaker. She's the director of the first day centre for autistic children in Ukraine. She also has a grown-up son with autism ... Bogdashina unpacks all our assumptions about the 'real' world. She asserts that 'neurotypicals' (non-autistic people) are restricted - "the verbal determines and confines their thinking" ... I endorse every word of the blurb - read this book and you'll learn a lot about autism - but more importantly you'll learn about yourself. -- Anne Stormont, Write Enough blog The book makes use of the personal experiences of autistic people, including Temple Grandin and Donna Williams. Their own words help illustrate a vibrant world that many non-autistic people are cut off from. Bogdashina also delves into the studies and reports of many established scientists, both to support her own statements and to offer alternative viewpoints. While her writing is lovely and inspiring, it is always based in scientific methodology and reflects her respect for scientific process. While other educators and researchers will find much to ponder on this book, Bogdashina's writing is also accessible to readers without advanced degrees. Even when dealing with complex subject matter, her writing is lucid and engaging. Readers looking for answers about autism will find Bogdashina's books fresh and useful; anyone interested in the questions of consciousness and experience will find it riveting. -- ForeWord Reviews Brilliantly, Olga weaves together science and real life experiences of people with autism bringing the reader to a greater understanding of how sensory differences can bring people with autism to the edges and beyond of neurotypical perception. This book has my highest recommendation for anyone wanting to learn more about sensory awareness and perception for people with autism - as well as for themselves. -- Stephen Shore, Ed.D., Assistant Professor of Special Education at Adelphi University and internationally known author, presenter, and consultant on issues related to autism. This is an entrancing read and an excellent reflection of Dr. Bogdashina's wide range of interests. It is to her credit as an academician that she draws upon such varied subjects as philosophy and quantum mechanics to illustrate her thought process and call into question different aspects of our individuality. -- Manuel Casanova, Gottfried and Gisela Kolb Endowed Chair in Psychiatry, University of Louisville Olga Bogdashina's book is a magnificent and much-needed account of the nature of sensory differences in autism, full of fresh, fascinating and perceptive insights. -- Adam Feinstein, autism researcher, Autism Cymru, and editor of Looking Up This book gives an interesting and theoretical insight into different sensory experiences of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. The key points are about the difficulties individuals have with 'filtering' stimuli, and how this leads to sensory deprivation. The author links in experiences of individuals with autism to reinforce the key points and help make the information more accessible. -- Speech & Language Therapy in Practice In Autism and the Edges of the Known World, Bogdashina demonstrates in a compelling way how autism can provide us with rich, irreducible clues about how we are able to comprehend the world as it is and communicate that knowledge effectively in language. Her encyclopaedic acquaintance with the subject, both in terms of empirical research and theoretical reflection, is vertiginous in its detail and illuminating in its depth. Autism, with its sensory deficits and distortions, provides us with a uniquely valuable prism for rendering the mystery of all 'creaturely knowing' as a subtle dialectic between that which is primordially close and that which sublimely different. -- Dr Ian Kenway, Director of the Centre for the international Study of Cyberethics and Human Rights, Cardiff University Will open a few minds to the idea of neurodiversity in the way autistic brains function and appreciation for some of the extraordinary abilities that the autistic individual has to offer society...For any professional who works with autistic individuals and researchers in the field of autism this is a must read book! It explains a perspective that, thus far, is pretty much ignored. As an occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration, as well as an adult on the autism spectrum, I feel that Dr. Bogdashina makes a lot of sense. -- Making Sense of Autism, LLC Autism and the Edges of the Known World: Sensitivites, Language and the Constructed Reality blends science and the experiences of people with autism in a fine survey considering traditional ideas of sensory perception and how they pertain to the autism experience. Linguistics, philosophy, science and health alike blend in a wider survey of how the sense and language interact differently in the autistic individual - and how autism can help foster new concepts of what it means to be human. -- The Midwest Book Review

This is a thought provoking look at autism. It covers a wide range of theory and makes some interesting speculations about perception and the way that some people move beyond ordinary perception.

A good description of an educational option
By CT
The author writes from a UK perspective, but most of what she says holds true in the USA as well. Basically, children with autism or Asperger syndrome can benefit from spending part of the school day at school and the rest of the day being home-educated because it keeps the amount of time spent in overwhelming, problem-causing school environments down to a manageable level but doesn't leave a parent completely alone in educating their special-needs child.

A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare

Magic, love spells, and an enchanted wood provide the materials for one of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies. When four young lovers, fleeing the Athenian law and their own mismatched rivalries, take to the forest of Athens, their lives become entangled with a feud between the King and Queen of the Fairies. Some Athenian tradesmen, rehearsing a play for the forthcoming wedding of Duke Theseus and his bride, Hippolyta, unintentionally add to the hilarity. The result is a marvelous mix-up of desire and enchantment, merriment and farce, all touched by Shakespeare’s inimitable vision of the intriguing relationship between art and life, dreams and the waking world.

Each Edition Includes:
• Comprehensive explanatory notes
• Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship
• Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English
• Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories

Review
`The commentary is admirably lucid and undogmatic on textual variants ... The introduction is of the kind that ponders and explores. Holland's method is to take each aspect or element of the play and consider it in the light of earlier traditions ... his critical position emerges unobtrusively but persuasively from the attested facts.' M.M. Mahoud, YES, 27, 1996

From the Publisher
An exciting new edition of the complete works of Shakespeare with these features: Illustrated with photographs from New York Shakespeare Festival productions, vivid readable readable introductions for each play by noted scholar David Bevington, a lively personal foreword by Joseph Papp, an insightful essay on the play in performance, modern spelling and pronunciation, up-to-date annotated bibliographies, and convenient listing of key passages.

Delightful after 400 years!

A piece of magic on the stage or screen--or on the electronic paper!

This is probably Shakespeare's most delightful comedy, and I'm glad I have read it in several editions and seen various versions of the play on large screen, small screen, and stage. I wish schools would teach this instead of trying to get the kids to understand Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar. Even if they don't understand this one, they can tell that it's fun and somewhat vulgar, with Bottom running around in an ass's head and the Queen of the Fairies falling in temporary love with him. "Fairy" might not yet have had its most recent meaning, but Bottom in an ass's head suggested exactly the same thing then that it suggests now

While I was getting my doctorate in English, my Shakespeare teacher worshiped Shakespeare instead of enjoying it for what it was worth. She almost went ballistic when somebody pointed out vulgarities and slapstick in the plays, because we too were supposed to worship Shakespeare instead of analyzing him. Sorry, but I was right and she was wrong. Shakespeare was a very bawdy writer, and he enjoyed being bawdy.

DO NOT see the movie Dead Poet's Society without reading or watching this play first.

Laugh out loud funny!
By A Customer
Okay, so maybe I'm not the world's greatest living expert on Shakespeare, considering the fact that, other than this, I have only read Romeo and Juliet. But hey, I thought it was great. Characters like Bottom and Robin Goodfellow were hilarious. Shakespeare seems to know how to make a tangled mess of everyone's lives very well. It amazes me his power to make that seem funny at times and then seem incredibly sad at others. I have to say, I really enjoyed this comedy better than his tragedy. I'm reading The Taming of The Shrew next. I don't know if I can handle Hamlet or Othello right now. By the way, if you're like me and you need someone to explain Shakespeare's language to you, I highly recommend the New Folger Library Copy with explanations on the opposite page.

Magical and funny play in a fine edition
By Craig Matteson
There are many reasons for the popularity of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", not the least among them is the almost unique joining of the humorous misuse of language (by the tradesman actors) and the utter beauty of language and expression (by Puck, Oberon, and Titania). One usually gets a farce of language or an attempt at the sublime. Here the music of the two enriches both.

How can one put together these four disparate plotlines into such a wonderful whole? The quartet of lovers and their mixed and varied attentions forms the basis of the plot in the comedy and it is a delightful enough farce. The squabble of Demitrius and Lysander over Hermia while Helena pines over Demitrius, Oberon and Titania's argument over one of her servants and Oberon's use of Puck to manipulate Titania's affections including Puck's mistaken application of Oberon's potion to Lysander's eyes, the pending marriage of Thesus and Hippolyta, and the wonderfully, magically awful play being put on by the tradesman for the nobles. Putting all this into a wonderful whole is an achievement that I believe is unmatched.

I do want to say that this play has suffered a great deal in our sex obsessed age. We have foisted on this play an eroticism that it does not claim for itself nor display. While the "adult" couples (Thesus & Hippolyta, Oberon & Titania) interact and talk in ways that include that aspect of their lives, the youthful couples always talk and act in ways that are concerned with propriety and modesty. Bottom is hardly the lust blinded brute depicted in modern productions. He is much more interested in eating and chatting with his Fairy friends than Titania. It is Titania who is under the influence of the magic flower who is infatuated with Bottom while he remains quite oblivious to her desires.

In any case, this is a fine edition of the work with many helps for the reader. Almost half the book is filled with introductory essays that provide background on the play and its text. The play itself is full of notes to help the reader understand idioms and definitions of words that are obscure, unique to Shakespeare, or that have changed meaning since 1596. There are four Appendices that cover source materials for the play, realigned text that the editors believe were corrupted in the sources we have for the play and the last one is the prologue to the play that Peter Quince butchers to the amusement of the nobles. The appendix provides us with the prologue with correct punctuation, as Quince should have read it.

All the background material is interesting and enriches our understanding of the play. But it is the play that matters and is so much fun to read.

Frank, tender, and brutally funny, Dimitri Verhulst's semi-autobiographical story details the vibrantly entertaining journey of a boy growing up in a family of alcoholics in Belgium

Sobriety and moderation are alien concepts to the men in Dimmy's family. Useless in all other respects, his three uncles have a rare talent for drinking, a flair for violence, and an unwavering commitment to the pub. And his father Pierre is no slouch either. Within hours of his son's birth, Pierre plucks him from the maternity ward, props him on his bike, and takes him on an introductory tour of the village bars. His mother soon leaves them to it and as Dimmy grows up amid the stench of stale beer, he seems destined to follow the path of his forebears and make a low-life career in inebriation, until he begins to piece together his own plan for the future.

Bringing to life the shambolic upbringing that The Guardian describes as, "the odd, ugly, excremental poetry of their grubby lives," The Misfortunates "can be unexpectedly tender as well as uncomfortably funny… this novel continually surprises and intrigues."

From Publishers Weekly
In this semi-autobiographical novel from Verhulst (Madame Verona Comes Down the Hill), the tattered family of narrator Dmitri, or Dimmy, lurches through life, frequently drunk and often disorderly. Dimmy, his uncles, and his father live in Arsendegem, Belgium, in a state of squalor about which nobody cares overmuch: We were ashamed, but we didn't do anything about it.... A miserable existence doesn't have to be complicated. The book itself is uncomplicated. Dimmy wryly relates stories, mostly from his youth, of his relatives' alcoholic hijinks: getting a cousin drunk for the first time; gambling to pay off gambling debts; a drinking contest/bicycle race modeled, improbably, after the Tour de France, in which vomiting wasn't against the rules: the puked-up beer would not be deducted from the total. Verhulst doesn't shrink from portraying Dimmy in a bad light, as when he describes waiting for his child to be born: There was still a very slim chance of the child being stillborn.... In that case I would find it difficult to conceal my delight. This bitingly honest book tips toward the amusing as fiction and toward the dismaying as autobiography. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Meet the Verhulst Family: 13-year-old Dimitri, his father, and his three uncles, all of whom live with the boy’s long-suffering grandmother. All the adult males are alcoholics; indeed, if beer-drinking were a craft, these feckless losers—only Dimitri’s father is employed—would be master craftsmen! The question is, Will Dimitri become their apprentice? Presented in the form of loosely linked stories, Belgian author Verhulst’s semiautobiographical novel shares mock-epic incidents from Dimitri’s childhood: an elaborate drinking contest, the revelation of his stylish cousin Sylvie’s real father, the repossession of the family’s TV, his estranged mother’s pee pass (don’t ask), and the like. If the tone of these stories is ruefully humorous, that of the four stories that feature Dimitri as an adult is more sardonic, including the one in which Dimitri realizes he has become more uncle than father to his five-year-old son. Aside from the sad visit of Dimitri to his now-senile grandmother, there isn’t an ounce of the sentimental in these often earthy stories. Together they offer a warts-and-all portrait of a family whose small lives would otherwise go unremarked. --Michael Cart

Review

“Dimitri tells the story episodically, and as the episodes accumulate, comic scenes reveal larger causes and repercussions…The Verhulsts are by turns crass, canny, clannish and hapless -- headed, in good spirits, for disaster.” ―The New York Times

“These often earthy stories…offer a warts-and-all portrait of a family.” ―Booklist

“This bitingly honest book tips toward the amusing as fiction and toward the dismaying as autobiography.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A family of deeply entrenched alcoholics stumbles its way toward grace in this 2007 novel of misadventure from award-winning Belgian writer Verhulst (Goddamn Days on a Goddamn Globe, 2008, etc.). The grotesque nature of chronic drinking is played as absurdist comedy in Verhulst's book. Admittedly autobiographical, Verhulst's rendering of pub life and the liver-crushing, free-wheeling lifestyle that has long-term effects on the narrator recalls nothing so much as the bittersweet flavor of Charles Bukowski and, by extension, Tom Waits. There's something of a meditation on fatherhood; the patriarch of the family takes his son on a tour of the bars immediately after his birth. But unfortunately, the novel's women become mere afterthoughts to the sport of the day. Drinking, as the narrator Dimmy explains, becomes something of a contest. "God created the day and we dragged ourselves through it," Verhulst writes. "When we still lived like characters in the songs of Big Bill Broonzy, Omer organized an assault on the world drinking record." And the men, be it Dimmy's father or his extended family of uncles, are rather disgusting: sweating, farting, scratching, cursing behemoths for whom beer and the consumption of said is a religion. The novel's pinnacle comes in the form of "The Tour de France," a monumental tribute to the pub crawl, replete with the contestants speeding through the suburbs in their underwear. Verhulst wraps things up nicely as Dimitri outgrows his roots. "I'm not one of them, but I'd like to be," he says. "I wish I could show my loyalty or my love, whatever you want to call those feelings. A poetic, no-holds-barred slice of the European lowlife, with lots of drinking.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Verhulst's prose is always a delight . . .This is a subtle and wonderfully told story.” ―Financial Times

“Verhulst's gift for imagery is impressive . . . the humour is pitch-black and very funny.” ―Prospect

“Ceaselessly entertaining . . . it bursts with humour and energy that never lets up.” ―BookMunch

“Outrageousness yields to eloquent recognition in this darkly intelligent novel.” ―Irish Times

“This is a welcome addition to the ranks of literary fiction that find humour, and sometimes poetry, in urban deprivation.” ―Independent

“Verhulst is a writer with an understanding of those who fail, and writes acutely and authentically.” ―De Standaard

“Verhulst is probably one of the most sensitive, most poetic of the new young Flemish writers. But none of his contemporaries has the same hardness. Sometimes his pen comes down like a hammer.” ―De Morgen

"...my father blew his boozy breath in my face for the first time."

First, is this a memoir, or fiction? The Misfortunates begins with the following disclaimer, which clears things right up: "Any similarity between existing people and certain characters in this book is due solely to insight into human nature."
In any case, this moving story about a "lower lower working class" family (grandmother, several sons, grandson) living in (fictional) Arsendegem, Flanders (Belgium), plagued by alcoholism, essentially defined by alcoholism, is so full of insight into human nature, and love, and dryly humorous observations, it is difficult to know where to begin. Here is a representative slice: "My grandmother emerged from the kitchen with a bucket and a rag, just the way a commemorative statue would represent her." The bouts and binges and day-to-day drinking are of a truly monumental proportion, and provide scenes both horrifying and humorous, including a Tour de France of alcohol consumption no mortal could survive.
Beyond alcoholism, there is the theme of social class, and the internal struggles that occur for those who, like the author, "rise above" a deprived and depraved family populated by those deeply flawed humans who you love so deeply. You can no longer be with this family, but you are undeniably of this family. "Girder will invariably call me his little brother--and there's not much that can make me happier than having this villainous pig call me his little brother."
This uncomfortable status of the writer who has emerged from family misfortune (and worse) reminded me of Rick Bragg's "All over but the shouting" and, especially, Tobias Wolff's "This boy's life" along with his later memoir/novels "Old school" and "In pharaoh's army." I would rank Verhulst (through David Colmer's masterful translation) as a writer and storyteller on par with Wolff, whose books I greatly admire.I hope, like Wolff, Verhulst will write the story of the next part of his life, that of his intellectual emergence from misfortune through fosterage.
Bottom line: this is a deceptively powerful story that suggests more understanding of what is true about people and important in life than is fair for a youngish middle-aged writer like Dimitri Verhulst to command. I can only hope that he keeps the books (and translations) coming. Very highly recommended.

*I received this ARC copy through goodreads first reads*
Dimmy is young when his mother leaves and his father moves them in with his grandmother and three uncles. Sobriety is a bad word in their house and Dimmy has to navigate his adolescent years among unapologetic alcoholics and chaotic relationships. It is expected for Dimmy to follow in their footsteps but life could always pass on an opportunity if he's willing to take it.
As someone who has seen loved ones battle the disease of alcoholism this novel felt familiar in some ways. A lot of readers will be able to relate on some level which makes this a subject that will never get worn out. I almost felt guilty for liking some of the characters or finding their antics funny, but comedy can help swallow a bitter pill as long as the importance is not pushed aside. I am not going to get too wordy because this is novel is really about personal taste more so than some. I will recommend this one but I will say that if you cannot read comic antics along with alcoholism it might not be the right fit. The author in no way diminishes alcoholism in my opinion.

Beer-swilling Flemings on the Road of Salvation.
By erisgeenhoop
Dimitri Verhulst takes off from where Louis Paul Boon , the often Nobel-prize nominated, socially conscious chronicler of the industrial revolution in Flanders left it. The former sixteen hours a day textile workers or Feet Warming marauders are now lowly employed or social benefit receiving drunkards who try to make the best out of a life with little promises, but in which beer is a comforting constant.
It would all be quite depressing where it not for the writer's ability to put a humorous slant on things, something he also shares with his illustrious predecessor Boon.
There's another excellent Verhulst book translated into English: Problemski Hotel.
