Good for higher functioning children

I work with moderate-profoundly autistic preschoolers (ages 3-5) both with and without comorbid mental retardation. I was tempted by the book because it says it has stories for things my students are often frightened of including trips to the hairdresser and having nails trimmed. However, the stories in the book are much too high level for these children to understand. For the right age range, this book could be an invaluable resource and a great time-saver. I would say it would be more appropriate for higher functioning students with disabilities including Asperger's Syndrome and school age students with Autism. Overall a good product, just not for my age range.

Writing your own stories is better

This book is too expensive for what it offers, and is definitely not recommended,write your own stories, since so many examples are available online.
This book does not give an exhaustive examples and not that many pictures. You know your child better and a majority of social stories may not be appliacble to you.

Presicion through simplicity

As an individual unfamiliar with the nuances of AS, I found "My Social Stories Book" particularly effective in identifying, conveying and demystifying what is mundane for most people, but what can be overwhelming for those with AS. Sean McAndrew's brilliant translation of the text via child-friendly illustrations relevant to their respective scenarios are what make a publication like this one truly work. Much like crosswalk symbols, these illustrations must be absolutely simplistic in order to be unmistakeably understood. Much respect to McAndrew who rendered the abstract idea of divorce in such tender illustrative grace.

About the Author
Julie Brown has been a professor of writing and literature for over 20 years. Her first two books of literary criticism, American Women Short Story Writers and Ethnicity and The American Short Story, explore the works of culturally marginalized writers. Her current research project investigates the link between autism and creative writing. Julie's son has Asperger's Syndrome and she is involved as a volunteer in the autistic community. Julie serves as an academic advisor for autistic individuals at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon and she also teaches a course she developed on autism in literature. She lives in Astoria.

A Remarkable Analysis of Authors With Asperger's

Lewis Carroll. Hans Christian Andersen. Emily Dickinson. What do these writers have in common? They almost certainly had Asperger's Syndrome. So did Melville, Yeats and Sherwood Anderson. Other research has identified these writers as being on the autism spectrum; Brown analyzes their writing to find common traits in style.

Brown found that writers with Asperger's had the ability to stay focused on the writing task for long periods of time; that they frequently had a hard time physically getting the words onto paper- the authors examined all wrote before the advent of computers- because writing is a linear process and many people with autism excel in the visual/spatial realm rather than linear processes; that a lot of them used a collage process to write- rather than starting at the beginning and writing straight through til the end, they wrote bits and pieces of different scenes and then arranged them later; that they sometimes wrote by borrowing phrases and making allusions to other works; they sometimes had gaps and leaps that are understandable to them, but not to a neurotypical reader; they are better at description and detail than they are at character development; they make heavy use of symbolism; they break rules of established writing to good effect. The writers she analyzes, one per chapter, all have these characteristics. Some of them have changed the look of literature- Andersen's fairy tales can have some very unhappy endings, Dickinson's poems didn't fit the established `ABAB' patterns, Carroll played with words like they were shiny toys, Sherwood Anderson was the first to use the form of linked short stories to create a novel.

But, do all authors on the spectrum write this way? Well, no. Most may, but not all. I know of writers who have had an Asperger's diagnosis who excel at character and have no problem writing about emotion fluently. Perhaps these authors are not as far along the spectrum as Brown's examples are; perhaps there is just as much variation between people on the spectrum as there is between neurotypicals.

A fascinating book that may change how you look at books and the people who write them.

Literary Autism

As someone who has an invested personal interest in autism, it was only natural that I would love this book. While I had long suspected that Emily Dickinson had Asperger's, I did not know that Lewis Carroll, Melville, Yeats, Sherwood Anderson and Hans Christian Andersen were also on the spectrum.

Brown, a gifted author researches each of these literary figures and provides compelling evidence that they were most likely on the autism spectrum. Emily Dickinson certainly fit the classic profile of a socially stunted person with a more severe form of Asperger's. In fact, as with any spectrum, there are overlapping behaviors and Emily Dickinson appeared to be closer to the autistic end of the spectrum.

Highly intelligent people with Asperger's often have the ability to concentrate on things of personal interest. In the case of Aspies with high literary ability, it is this singleness of purpose, this ability to stay focused on writing that makes their work all the more distinct.

Each one of the people featured in this book demonstrated the "linear thinking" that is often a hallmark of Asperger's. Many of the writers followed a theme and would later rearrange said theme so as to fit in with the rhythm and flow of the story. In keeping with the "jigsaw puzzle" analogy that is so often applied to people with autism, the writers featured here often moved whole sections of their poems/stories so as to "fit" and "flow" with the main theme, not unlike fitting together a puzzle in the literary sense.

Jane Austen, from the way she has been described in other biographies certainly makes one wonder if she was on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum as well. In fact, she certainly sounds as if she was on the a/A spectrum and I believe that she was. Her characters from "Pride & Prejudice" are featured in So Odd a Mixture: Along the Autistic Spectrum in 'Pride and Prejudice' and that author makes a VERY compelling case for how Jane and 8 of her characters certainly had a place on the autism spectrum.

Highly intelligent people with Asperger's tend to be extremely logical, but many of their neurotypical (NT) counterparts often miss the rationale behind the behavior and creations of people on the spectrum. Many writers with Asperger's rely on symbolism (think "Moby Dick," which is an allegory and Carroll's books) and find character development more challenging. Each one of the writers featured in this book fit the profile for Asperger's. The writing style of many gifted Aspies goes against standard tradition; to wit we have Andersen's gruesome endings and events in some fairy tales; Carroll, who would later influence John Lennon (not that John Lennon was on the spectrum) created neologisms and weird literary fantasies. John Lennon loved Carroll's books as a boy and in 1964, borrowed largely from Carroll's style of using neologisms and spoofs on words, e.g. "I was bored on the 9th of October....Madolf Heatlump bombed England..." Emily Dickinson created her own brand of poetry replete with her own rhythm and imagery. Sherwood Anderson, long loved for his short stories about small-town life in Ohio would line his stories up, not unlike many people with more severe autism lining objects up and create a novel out of the separate stories.

I do believe that each one of these authors had Asperger's. Asperger's is as old as time and was only identified in 1944 by Dr. Asperger who studied a group of boys whose behaviors fit a certain pattern. By 1994 Asperger's would be included in the DSM-IV and I have no doubt that each one of these authors had Asperger's.

Asperger's, as with any other condition is a spectrum. There are Aspie writers who are quite good at character development and can speak of emotions naturally and comfortably. There is no "one size fits all" paradigm. There is a wide variability among the spectrum, but there are some persistent features that are recognizable.

This excellent book will certainly give readers a different view of these authors and a new appreciation for them and for Aspies in general.

A bland account of Catherine of Aragon's marriage to Henry VIII

Carolly Erickson has written some fine historical biographies on such historical figures like Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I. But The Spanish Queen: A Novel of Henry VIII of Catherine of Aragon is far from her finest work and is not really up to par with what she has delivered in the past. The novel is sympathetic to those who side with Henry VIII's first wife, who was cast aside for the commoner, Anne Boleyn. Erickson's novel disputes most of the pesky rumors that have attempted to tarnish Catherine's memory, especially her short marriage to the young Prince Arthur, Henry VIII's older brother, who died at an early age.

Erickson writes in her notes at the end of the novel that she has played with some historical facts for entertainment purposes. As a reader of both historical fiction and non-fiction history books, I completely understand the need for authors to take a few liberties to spin a good tale. But the liberties Carolly Erickson wrote were not in good taste. Catherine of Aragon has always been seen a strong female who withstood the worst of Henry VIII's wrath with strength and dignity. Carolly reduces her to a vengeful murderer. Meanwhile, her portrayal of Anne Boleyn was almost laughable. Carolly Erickson writes Anne Boleyn as the text book whore.

This would be an okay book for someone who loves to devour any type of historical fiction. But if you are pressed for time, and need to be choosey. I would advise that you look elsewhere for an entertaining read. Carolly did attempt to weave a good tale, but she is not in the league of other historical fiction authors like Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir. If you have read your share of historical fiction on the Tudors, this novel will fail to satisfy. I also don't understand why the author skipped over Henry VIII's relationship with Mary Boleyn, Anne Boleyn's sister, as this relationship also influenced Catherine's relationship to the King. This was not an entirely terrible read. It is just not entertaining enough for those who are used to the sensational writing of other historical fiction authors.

Awful - Not based on facts or the true Catherine of Aragon.

Awful - This is an absolute awful representation of the fierce, strong and independent Catherine of Aragon. For those who know the true Catherine, Erickson writes as though her marriage to Henry was loveless with Henry regretting their marriage with her first miscarriage which is SO wrong it infuriates me. Henry was devoted to Catherine and loved her passionately for many years. According to Erickson Catherine was not well respected or loved by Henry when in fact it was the exact opposite! Also, Erickson portrays Catherine to be rather accepting of Anne Boleyn and even understanding that Henry needed to put her aside in order to have sons... At this... 75% into the book, I had to close it. For such an amazing woman, this book is quite an insult to her memory. She was a brilliant woman who waged war against the Scotts while Henry was fighting the French and stood tall and true until the end when her marriage was challenged.

About the Author
Matthew Tinsley has a degree in Modern Languages and spent his entire professional life working in the sphere of specialist bookshops. After many years struggling with alcoholism and two failed marriages, he overcame his addiction. Matthew believes this is largely due to his self-awareness of his autistic condition, together with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. He is currently living in Brighton, where he aims to help spread awareness of the problems faced by those with Asperger's Syndrome. Sarah Hendrickx is Training Manager of an adult AS support project and a freelance consultant in AS in the UK. She is author of Love, Sex and Long-Term Relationships and together, she and her partner Keith, who is self-diagnosed with AS, are authors of Asperger Syndrome - A Love Story. Both books are published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.

Eye opening account of Asperger Syndrome and alcohol abuse

As someone with a Autism Spectrum Disorder who has suffered from alcohol abuse in the past I can identify with Matthew Tinsley's struggle with alcohol. He and Sarah Hendrixx have done a great job pointing out that many people with some form of autism may lean on alcohol to help them cope with life. With support from family and staff at the office I work at (my employer specializes in diagnosing and helping people with ASDs) I've been able to overcome my urges to drink since 2007. For me attending a weekly support group meeting of recovering alcoholics is beneficial too. I hope more research is done into the very possible link between Asperger Syndrome and alcohol abuse.

Parents - Read This Book

It's the only book I've found that covers the social connection between AS and Alcohol. I could have written this. I never "fit in", anywhere. At age 14, I started drinking to "fit in". I had found the cure. I drank as much and as often as I could for the next 14 years. It took another five years to figure out how to stop. And another 20 years to learn how to live a happy productive life. If this book had been around in 1970, much suffering could have been avoided. I ask Parents to read this, if not for your kids, some one you know has this problem. As a Mother or Dad, buy this book and pass it around. I lived 50 years undiagnosed. Good Luck.

Understanding why "Aspies" drink

I haven't completed this book, yet. It can be a little difficult to understand in some places, but so far, it has really helped me to understand why my "Aspie" adult child drinks so heavily. I have also been able to help him control his drinking, just by understanding the cause! I would definitely recommend this book to people who have loved ones on the PDD spectrum, or are on the spectrum themselves, in order to understand, cope, and help with out of control drinking! My heart goes out to each and every person with the diagnosis, or who have loved ones who have the diagnosis!

Exciting, adventurous, and exceptionally well-told

Next to perhaps River of Stars and The Marching Dead, both of which I went into with high expectations, I don't think I've enjoyed a book this year as much as I did Gideon Smith and the Mechanical Girl. From the concept to the characters, I enjoyed every aspect of it and came away wanting more . . . much more.

David Barnett's novel has been called "the ultimate Victoriana / steampunk mash-up" but that doesn't begin to describe it. It's also an old-fashioned horror story, a penny dreadful romp around the world, and an adventure worthy of Indiana Jones. Barnett takes us from the streets of London to the sands of Egypt, and from the dizzying heights of battling dirigibles to the claustrophobic depths of ancient pyramids, all with vampires, mummies, devil dogs, and monstrous frogs along for the ride.

More than anything, however, this is a tale of heroes. It's a story about heroes lost and found, made and unmade. It's a story about what makes a hero, why we worship them, and why the world needs them. It's also a story about how heroes can be found in the unlikeliest of places. Gideon Smith starts the novel as a shy young man in search of a hero to delve into the mystery hidden below the cliffs; a mystery that he is certain claimed the life of his father's crew. It's a search that brings him into contact with the likes of Bram Stoker and Elizabeth Bathory, as well as the mechanical girl who captures his heart. Ultimately, it's also a journey that brings him to the realization of his own innocent brand of heroism.

As for the mechanical girl who makes up the other half of the title, Maria is a fascinating creation who doesn't get nearly the page time she deserves. She's a fully fledged character, as likable as she is sympathetic, but she's more of a catalyst than a character. It's a search for answers and a desire for vengeance that takes Gideon Smith through the first half of the novel, and a love for Maria that carries him through to the end. She does have a pivotal role to play in the story, both as a peril and a power in the climactic showdown. I won't spoil the adventure with details, but it's safe to say a mechanical girl pales in comparison to what rises from the depths of the pyramid at the end.

In the end, there's not just room for a sequel here, but a cliffhanger that demands it. That's not to say Gideon Smith and the Mechanical Girl isn't a complete story on its own, because it is, but like the best of the penny dreadfuls it leaves us with us with the start of a whole other adventure. Exciting, adventurous, and exceptionally well-told, filled with equal parts amusement and astonishment, this is sure to be a fixture of best-of lists come the end of the year.

Gideon Smith and the Mechanical Plot

The late nineteenth century holds a particular fascination for us, as it saw the awakening of modern technological culture, while at the same time much of the world still lay shrouded in mystery. The popular imagination soared and thrilled to stories of adventurers unlocking the secrets of the deepest jungles and the most remote mountaintops. There was still much left to explore.

A rich tradition of literature exists from the time, and the modern steampunk genre seeks to tap this to flesh out a world just at the edges of our collective memory. David Barnett takes this a step further. Rather than evoke the memory of cultural memes about the time, Barnett takes the rather unusual expedient of simply lifting characters and situations directly from the creative minds of the the authors who originated them. Are you a Sherlock Holmes fan? Why, here's Inspector Lestrade trotting up to a crime scene! Why do the work of inventing backstory when you can pull in a rich history by reference? Are you a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's groundbreaking Mythos? Barnett cherry-picks Arkham (cleverly disguised as Arkhamville) and apes characters of "The Shadow over Innsmouth." Do you have fond memories of Indiana Jones? Look no further! Barnett pulls in the Jones clan. (Why re-invent the wheel when it's already been done so well?) Fascinated by genius? Let's trot out Einstein! It's not Albert Einstein, with all the tricky licensing issues to work out for the use of that name, but I think we can all share a knowing wink and move on. Ah, vampires. Vampires have gripped the popular imagination for some time now, and who is the most famous vampire of all? Dracula! So let's throw him in, along with Bram Stoker. Finally, a nod to one of the most engaging authors of the time, Rudyard Kipling. Barnett manages to ape Kim's Hurree Babu just well enough for us to recognize the character, albeit in the cartoonishly simplified form of Barnett's Okoth, whose gimmick is absurdly frequent repetition of the word "astonishingly."

This book isn't all about theft of characters, though. Barnett accurately portrays the background racism of the time:

Quote: "The Negroes are in the hold, Mr. Savior. Be careful, though. They're savages."

Barnett does emerge from this rather unfortunate picture by presenting us with some of the wittiest, most imaginative dialog ever to see print:

Quote: "Rule number one, kid," said Cocayne. "Be prepared. Rule number two, if you can't be prepared, be lucky."

Pure genius. And lest you feel you'll be left cold by the propriety and formality of Victorian speech in England, Barnett keeps us grounded in his base realism:

Quote: Bent let loose a long, wet fart. "Eff to a plan, does anybody have a gun?"

If you slipped briefly and thought you were reading Kipling, Barnett brings you right back.

In his introduction to this tour de force, Barnett talks about reading excerpts of his mental exudate to his children. I can picture the cute little Barnett fry clustered around Daddy as he reads to them:

Quote: Aloysius Bent writhed and moaned in the tangled pit of the grey bedsheets, surfacing from the black void of unconsciousness with much farting and belching. A steam-hammer was banging like a two-shilling tart, the sound of a woodpecker ferreting for grubs, offering a fainter, yet no less annoying, counterpoint. He arranged his morning erection in his sagging underwear and tried to separate the two sounds. The steam-hammer was the thudding hell of a hangover, evidenced by the stale gin sweat clinging to his tongue. The woodpecker was the ceaseless rapping on the door.

David Barnett is, in his quiet, humble, way, offering two gleaming rays of hope to aspiring authors and fans of steampunk. First, don't despair of getting published! Clearly they'll publish anything nowadays! Second, don't feel it's beyond you to finish your novel. Hell, if you haven't written a word, you've already done Barnett one better.

Barnett has left the door open for a sequel - perhaps, even, affixed a pulsing neon sign to said door, complete with buzzing, blinking arrows and a carnival barker shouting at you from the last pages of this week-old literary goulash. Don't walk through it.

Now, I gave this book one star, and that star is for its editors. They managed to slog through it, and the result of their work is a book wholly lacking in typos, grammatical flaws, and other such unsightly errors. Barnett's... message... is presented unmarred.

In Which We Are Introduced To An Unforgettable Steampunk World

When Gideon Smith's fisherman father is mysteriously killed at sea, his son vows to avenge the death, which he is convinced was not accidental. Intent on enlisting the assistance of his penny dreadful hero, Captain Lucian Trigger, he crosses paths with an aspiring author researching for his new novel - one Bram Stoker - who at first is more interested in the local reports of a large black dog that appears to be the only survivor of a shipwreck than Gideon's claims that monsters were responsible for the death of his father. It seems at first their interests are at cross purposes, but Gideon's monsters and Stoker's vampires turn out to be one in the same - though neither are what they appear to be. Several different story lines then come to the forefront, only to converge in the most unexpected ways, so what seemed like a hodgepodge of unrelated scenes and characters eventually blend seamlessly (and ingeniously) into one.

We are thus introduced to an amusing array of fictional, historical and original characters alike - sky pirates, archaeologists, vampires, assorted adventurers, clockwork automatons, Jack the Ripper - and follow along almost rapturously as we are led through this richly described steampunk world. As each layer of the story is peeled back, Gideon uncovers government conspiracies, ancient Egyptian curses and mummies straight out of the pages of his favorite magazine, World Marvels and Wonders. And learns some disappointing truths about his hero, Captain Trigger, in the process.

Blending elements of Victoriana, pulp fiction, sci-fi and mystery, Gideon Smith was a fantastically enjoyable and intricately plotted adventure set in an alternate universe London powered by gears and gadgetry. This elaborately contrived world, in fact, practically takes center stage, contributing as much to the story as do the actual characters, and was possibly one of the most imaginative renderings of a steampunk setting I've read to date. This would make for an excellent movie, one that I would actually spend the price of a ticket to see.

I did have a few quibbles regarding the overuse of foul language - this may be an instance of the pot calling the kettle black, but I feel strongly that it should be kept out of literature with the exception that it might contribute to the story. Show, don't tell us with one expletive after the next, that the character is a boor. Also, frequent instances of modern turns of phrase did tend to jerk me out of the story.

Minor nitpicks aside, I have not enjoyed a story this much in quite a while, and my technical rating would be 4.5 stars for the aforementioned nitpicks and some character development issues in the first few chapters. Overall, though, it reminded me of a Victorian Indiana Jones (with vampires... who do not sparkle) and if this is to be continued into a series, I would read the next one without reservation.

This book is designed for grandparents and family members of people going through the process of adoption. It is a short but very helpful guide. Much of the practical information relates to processes in the US, but also briefly covers processes in the UK and other countries... written by people who have experienced the challenges of supporting their children as they go through the adoption process... Each section has recommended further reading, and this book would make an excellent resource as well as a useful gift for the grandparents to be. (Youth in Mind)

Patricia Irwin Johnston is not only a mom through adoption, but a member of a family which includes a birthmother, several adopted people, and several sets of adoptive parents. She is a well known and respected professional educator and volunteers within the infertility and adoption communities, having served on the boards of directors of several influential organizations including RESOLVE and Adoptive Families of America. Pat is the author of several popular books on adoption and infertility and lives in Indianapolis, USA.

A Great Book For Relatives of Adopting Couples

I received this book just yesterday and already I've read it twice. I've even marked my favorite passages for my in-laws and relatives to pay close attention to. This is a GREAT book for anyone affected by adoption. The information was presented well and in an easy to read format. I'm sure that after reading this my relatives who have been a little reserved about adoption will come to accept our decision and even enjoy our baby when s/he arrives. This is a MUST for anyone whose is having trouble getting their friends and family to be enthusiastic about adoption.

I was very concerned about some of the reviews of this book, it was either loved or hated. I kept coming back to it and decided to give it a chance. I am so glad I did! This book was insightful not only to the recipient, but to ME! If taken in stride, it needs to be understood that we (the adopters) need to consider where/how and why the feedback is being presented. It might not be packaged nicely and we might be a little sensitive hearing it - but this book worked magic for us. It was just what I had been searching for and did the trick. Everyone is different - I suggest giving the book a try, with an open mind. The content is great, easy to read and contains many informative sections - not presented in only one format or style. If one method does not get through the other does. I loved the scenarios given at the end about the stupid comments people can make - so true! Bless all of you adopters and your family - this is just one more step in our paper pregnancy!!!! Enjoy.

A Great Resource

I enjoyed this book and it was invaluable in helping me educate extended family about adoption. The language is clear and concise, it speaks directly to the family members/friends of adoptive parents, and it addresses many of the concerns that family members or friends may have, regardless of whether they blurt it out or not.

As adoptive parents, we often spend hours poring over books, talking with others who have adopted, and researching our choice. Our extended family members often do not make the same educational journey we do, so it's helpful to have something to gently illustrate topics like adoption myths, respectful language, privacy for the child, etc.

I highly recommend it.
