Painful Bladder Syndrome: Controlling and Resolving Interstitial Cystitis through Natural Medicine, by Philip Weeks

Painful bladder syndrome is a common and highly debilitating condition that Western medicine finds notoriously difficult to treat. Blending ancient and modern holistic medical traditions from both East and West, Philip Weeks guides the reader through the process of managing their symptoms effectively using a simple yet powerful combination of natural techniques, nutrition and herbal medicine.

Applying his deep understanding of the principles of Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, he provides holistic medical perspectives on the causes of PBS, as well as clear explanations of specific holistic methods and techniques for bringing symptoms under control, along with step-by-step instructions for introducing them to daily life. The book also looks in a holistic way at effective natural treatments for common co-existing conditions, including allergies, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue. The book ends with an easy-to-follow seven point protocol for recovery from PBS.

This pragmatic and compassionate self-help guide will empower those with interstitial cystitis to gain control over their symptoms and achieve greater physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It will also be of interest to complementary, alternative and mainstream health practitioners involved in treating or supporting those with the condition.

Review
Weeks covers many subjects to show how interconnected our systems are... this book is complimentary to what a holistic pain service committed to self management would promote. -- Pain News The possible contributory factors to PBS (painful bladder syndrome) are many and varied, meaning that no two cases are alike. In this book, Philip Weeks tackles this challenge head-on, adopting a personalised approach to treating PBS, one that is tailored to the unique circumstances of the individual... Split into 12 logical and easy to follow chapters, the text succinctly covers all the practitioner and patient needs to know in order to start on the road to recovery. There is comprehensive information on conventional diagnostics and medications, and on functional testing, diet, lifestyle, nutrient supplements, herbs and other complementary therapies. The information is punctuated with short case studies, enabling the reader to see instantly how the information can be applied to real life situations. This book will be a valuable tool for individuals suffering from the debilitating symptoms of PBS, as well as for the healthcare practitioners working with them. -- Lorraine Nicolle, MSc, MBANT, NTCC, CNHC, nutrition practitioner, educator and author In his latest book, Philip Weeks brings painful bladder syndrome (PBS) elegantly into the wider public and professional discussion. He shows us that this condition is widespread, often under-diagnosed and incorrectly managed, and that a much broader awareness is needed of the negative effects of modern lifestyles, hidden environmental toxins and over-stressed digestive system. In his convincing clinical cases he demonstrates that the successful treatment of PBS, or Interstitial Cystitis, requires a general understanding of mucous membrane health in order to heal the GAG layer of the urinary system and minimise the distress of this modern age condition. Without antagonising mainstream management of PBS, he explores with great skill its complex and multifactorial aspects and finds ways of simplifying its treatment at the same time, almost down to the level of self-help intervention and lifestyle adjustments which is what both the suffering patient and practitioners have been waiting for. -- Dr Siegfried Trefzer, Director of Hightree Medical Clinic and Associate Physician at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine, UK

Possibly helpful for mild sufferers, potentially harmful for the more severely afflicted
By S. Falcone
I was pretty disappointed with this book. If I could, I would give it 2 and 1/2 stars, but I really can't give 3, as to me that would indicate that this book is good and I do not think that it is.
There is some useful, whole-body information here, information about how, for example, gluten-sensitivity can play a role in maintaining the inflammation that characterizes i.c. Also, the author makes some suggestions for herbs which are helpful. However, Mr. Weeks makes some suggestions that I fear would cause all but the mildest sufferers of i.c. considerable pain (his recipes for a detoxification for example, contain very acidic ingredients and are not at ALL appropriate for someone with even moderate i.c.)
The author DOES have an impressive command of anatomy and physiology, but I think he must be seeing a population of very mild i.c. patients because many of the suggestions that he makes run counter to the best thinking (and countless patient comments) on what aggravates i.c.
My take-away from the book was to be more strict about avoiding gluten (I do have gluten-sensitivity). I cannot say that this has made any difference in my i.c., but it's good to have an additional motivation to avoid gluten.
In conclusion, if you have mild i.c., you will probably find a thing or three that will help you, if you are newly diagnosed the author accurately describes what i.c. is, but if your situation is rather more dire, suggestions in this book can actually hurt you. Also, please note how many pages the book contains- it is a very slim volume.

Terrific and helpful information
By RWalls
This is a great book if you have painful bladder syndrome. Before I bought it, I found many of the things talked about in the book to be true. It was excellent confirmation for knowing I was cutting out the right foods and keeping the digestive tract in good order plays a key role. There were two supplements I don't recall being mentioned that have been a huge help for me, IntestRenew and Slippery Elm. Make sure you try out the shaking technique at the end. If you don't like that, gentle jogging (also a few qigong movements) will also help to accomplish the same results. Heal well!

Such a helpful book!
By Tina
There is a lot of information in this book and it is all very helpful. I wouldn't say it is an easy read--lots of scientific terms--but I took notes. This is all about healing in a natural way. I have started to take the supplements that Weeks suggested--not all of them. I started a gluten free diet because of this book too. Really it is very interesting and answers a lot of questions that I had. I can't say if anything works yet--I have only just begun my road to recovery--but at least I feel I'm on the right road due to this book!

Calliope learned at a very early age that if she wanted to survive in this world then she needed to stand on her own. When she and her younger brother are abandoned by their mother, Calliope steps up to the plate and takes care of them both, but really all she really wants is to feel safe and to have a place that she and her brother can call their own. But life takes her down paths she never dreamed and danger always seems to be a hairs breadth away. At her darkest hour, she meets Lynx and her life will never be the same.

Lynx has been released from prison and it should be a fresh start for him and Bambi. But Lynx has discovered an insatiable appetite, for gambling, that threatens to bring both of them to ruin. When he meets Calliope, everything takes a dramatic new twist that will leave everyone reeling.

From Booklist
Turner packs a lot of story into the long-awaited sequel to The Glamorous Life (2005). This edgy urban saga revisits wife and husband Bambi and Lynx from the first installment as they cross tragic paths with Calliope and her younger brother, Compton. After the siblings are abandoned by their abusive mother and placed with neglectful relatives, they head out on their own and soon find themselves entering difficult adulthoods within a world of crime. Calliope seeks protection for her and Compton by helping the police, but they both end up involved in selling drugs, and, worse yet, Calliope ends up messing around with Lynx. In danger, she turns to Bambi, only to discover that she and her child are also imperiled. Tragedy and pain drive this roller coaster of a book, but Calliope and Bambi’s resilience is appealing, and Turner’s raw writing makes for page-turning suspense and infuses feeling into the gritty scenes and dialogue. Urban-fiction fans will crave this novel and all of Turner’s titles. --Amy Alessio

Had to sift through a lot to find useful ideas
By E. Boulay
I was excited by the positive reviews of this book but must say that it was a bit of a disappointment to me. I had hoped to read about some novel suggestions for how to get out of the house with my infant (and maintain my sanity), but some of the ideas involved things like taking a bath, crocheting a hat, holding my partner's hand while on a walk, or having your groceries delivered to me. Sorry, but I didn't find those things terribly helpful in my quest to figure out things to do with my little that will keep us both entertained (which is what I thought the book would do primarily - maybe my mistake). Not a complete waste but just not as idea-rich as I had hoped.

Must have for any mom!
By Sara Wright
I LOVE this book, I wish I had it when my first child was born. It is filled with creative and humorous ideas for enjoying the precious time you have with your baby, including tips on how to include your partner and other moms. It gave me inspiration and motivation to get out of the house and take my little ones with me! It does seem to be geared for stay-at-home moms, however, as a mom who works outside of the home, the activities can also be done in the evenings or on weekends.

Great for city-dwellers
By EmmyL
If you live in the city or the suburbs, this book probably has a ton of great suggestions for you. However, if you live in the middle of nowhere and don't have access to malls or shops or anything besides a McDonald's, this book is not for you. I have to drive 30 miles to civilization, so I could use very few of the examples. That certainly doesn't make it badly written or lacking in good ideas, but it does have a more limited audience than I expected.

The Wedding Gift, by Marlen Suyapa Bodden

In 1852, when prestigious Alabama plantation owner Cornelius Allen gives his daughter Clarissa's hand in marriage, she takes with her a gift: Sarah—her slave and her half-sister. Raised by an educated mother, Clarissa is not the proper Southern belle she appears to be, with ambitions of loving whom she chooses. Sarah equally hides behind the façade of being a docile house slave as she plots to escape. Both women bring these tumultuous secrets and desires with them to their new home, igniting events that spiral into a tale beyond what you ever imagined possible. Told through the alternating viewpoints of Sarah and Theodora Allen, Cornelius' wife, Marlen Suyapa Bodden's The Wedding Gift is an intimate portrait of slavery and the 19th Century South that will leave readers breathless.

From Publishers Weekly
In this stunning debut, Marlen Suyapa Bodden effortlessly transports the reader to 1852 Alabama, where slavery and racism may rule the day, but everything isn't as black and white as it may seem. Sixteen-year-old Sarah Campbell is a housemaid to her half-sister Clarissa. Both daughters of plantation owner Mr. Allen, they secretly reject the roles they are expected to play. Sarah yearns for the day when she can escape slavery, while Clarissa is disinterested in her father's wishes for her to marry young and become mistress of her own plantation. But then Clarissa unexpectedly becomes pregnant before she's wed-changing the trajectory of both girls' lives. Bodden weaves a page-turning tangled web of misogyny, greed, scandal and violence in this powerful story about races colliding against the backdrop of America's darkest era.

From Booklist
In her first novel, lawyer Bodden draws on an immense amount of historical knowledge to present a tale about life in pre–Civil War Alabama that is as educational as it is compelling. Clarissa is the legitimate daughter of Cornelius Allen, a wealthy plantation owner. Sarah is also Allen’s daughter, the product of his long-standing extramarital affair with Emmeline, his beautiful house slave. Sarah narrates the novel in turns with Theodora, Allen’s wife, who is frustrated by her own lack of agency. Theodora secretly teaches Sarah to read and write, sharpening Sarah’s hunger for liberty. When flippant Clarissa gets married, Sarah is given to her as a gift, sparking events that upend life at the Allen plantation. Bodden writes with delicacy, allowing layers of meaning to unfold slowly, and her portrayal of the horrors of slave life is both unflinching and purposeful. The connections developed between Clarissa and Sarah illustrate the complex sorrows of tyranny, and the ecstasy of triumphing over oppression. An inspiring read for historical-fiction fans, especially those who like strong female narrators. --Amber Peckham

"In this stunning debut, Marlen Suyapa Bodden effortlessly transports the reader to 1852 Alabama, where slavery and racism may rule the day, but everything isn't as black and white as it may seem...Bodden weaves a page-turning tangled web of misogyny, greed, scandal and violence in this powerful story about races colliding against the backdrop of America's darkest era."  --PW Starred Review

“If I were you, I wouldn’t make any plans for the rest of the day.  You have in your hands a story of the tangled motives and self-destructive passions when whites and blacks became this close during the time of slavery—all told at a pell mell pace.”—Tom Wolfe, New York Times bestselling and Award-winning author of Back to Blood

“Bodden wraps some of the most complex issues facing the world today, slavery, racism, misogyny, and violence in an unflinching tall tale about an American family that is black and white. This compelling and fierce historical novel, where the slave master gives his white daughter his black daughter as a wedding gift, is set in the big house of a wealthy plantation before the Civil War and is based on a court case from the 1840s in Talladega, Alabama.”—Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

“Fascinating, intriguing—a great story!” —Kathleen Grissom, New York Times bestselling author of The Kitchen House

“The WEDDING GIFT is powerful and absorbing.  Ms. Bodden’s story-telling skills are on fine display in this intricately-plotted novel as she unflinchingly transports the reader to the most tragic, brutal time in the country’s past.  The characters are exceptionally well-rendered; the sense of who they are lingers beyond the last page.  The author astutely captures the complexities of the relationships--especially between the enslaved black women and the oppressed white women.  Also masterfully captured here is the boundless quest to live fully free.” —Diane McKinney-Whetstone, author of Tumbling

"The strength of the novel is its slave narrative tone and its ability to demonstrate the pain of being owned by  another human being. Many have heard of slavery; few know this story. It's too important to overlook." —Daniel Black, author of Twelve Gates to the City

Two Sides of American Slavery
By Amazon Customer
This is the story of two women; Sarah Campbell and Theodora Allen. Sarah was born in 1846, a slave at the Allen Estates. Theodora Allen married Cornelius, the master of the plantation. Sarah is also the bastard daughter of Cornelius, half sister to Theodora's Clarissa. Sarah's mother Emmeline only goes to Cornelius' bed to ensure her children will stay on the plantation. Despite the feeling of betrayal, Theodora comes to care for both Emmeline and Sarah, especially since Sarah is not only Clarissa's maid, but also her childhood companion, as well as one of the gifts that Cornelius gives Clarissa when she gets married. This is "The Wedding Gift" by Marlene Suyapa Bodden.

Told in alternating first-person narratives, that slightly backtrack in time between chapters, this novel unfolds while looking at two sides of the same story. On the one hand we have the perspective of the slave women Sarah. On the other we have the confidences of the plantation owner's wife Theodora. More importantly, we also see how these two women interact with each other as well as their relationships to their own families, and each others' families. In other words, these are the stories of one woman and her daughter, and one daughter and her mother.

There are many stories about slavery before the American Civil War. This one is somewhat out of the ordinary in that we get parallel versions of the tale from both sides of the story - from the slave and from her owner. What I found most interesting was that in many ways, the owner Theodora was as much of a slave as Sarah. She was equally subject to the will of her husband as were her slaves. The difference was that Cornelius couldn't sell her if she disobeyed him. Also, in some ways Sarah was freer than Theodora because Sarah always could attempt to escape. If Sarah was successful, she could start a new life elsewhere, where she be welcomed and accepted. On the other hand, as long as Cornelius was alive, Theodora could go nowhere without scandal and shame following her.

It also occurred to me that this is more a story about relationships between mothers and their daughters, as well as vice versa, than it is about slavery. To what lengths will a mother go to help her child, or a daughter go to care for her mother? All these aspects are very well covered in this novel through the two narratives. In addition, despite Sarah's unusual literacy, the two women's voices are distinctive enough to easily distinguish between them.

With all of this, one might think that the story would be extremely gripping. In fact, throughout most of the book, we are swept along with these tales. However, as we near the end, parts of the narrative became technical and stilted. In some ways, from a certain point on, I felt like I was getting more lessons in legal, geographical and historical matters than I was following the stories of these two women. And while the conclusion of the novel came with an unexpected twist, by that time I was already becoming less invested in the outcomes of these women's stories. Moreover, this twist also felt a bit too out of the blue, and slightly inconsistent with the character. This isn't to say that I would have preferred an ending that came to a happier conclusion, but I would have liked it to be a bit more cohesive with the rest of the tale.

Marlene Suyapa Bodden gives us a gently written story that unfolds elegantly along one of America's darkest areas of its history. She holds little back describing some of these horrors, but also reminds us of the kindnesses of those who rejected slavery. Together with this, she gives us food for thought about the essence of freedom, and a woman's role in society and family. While this was an enjoyable read for the most part, I was less than enamored with the content and tone of the end of the book. For this, I feel "The Wedding Gift" deserves three stars out of five.

Not terrible, but seems a lot of deja vu
By D. Williams
THE WEDDING GIFT is a novel set in 1852 Alabama, told in the first-person point of view through the eyes of Sarah Campbell, a slave, and Theodora Allen, her mistress. There are short periods where this tale is told from the point of view of the Allens’ daughter Clarissa. Sarah is actually the daughter of Theodora’s husband, the plantation master.

This perspective adds something to this novel because readers see the racism and misogyny of the times. The slaves are chattel; they aren’t even legally supposed to gain any education at all. White women are treated almost as badly; they must tolerate infidelity and abuse from the very ones who are supposed to love them.

With this in mind, this novel does have strong language, sexuality, alcohol and drug (laudanum) use and violence; I give it my usual phrase of “for sophisticated older teens and up” because of that.

This novel does need some work with character development. Sarah’s character is well-handled; some readers may be bothered by the fact that she doesn’t understand that slavery is bad, but it is all she’s ever known. Because Theodora Allen has allowed Sarah to be in the room when Clarissa is taking her lessons, Sarah is more educated than most Blacks of her time.

However, the other characters seem rather “wooden.” Readers of fiction set in this time period have seen these character types – the long-suffering but benevolent plantation mistress who prefers to refer to the people who work for her as “servants” rather than “slaves”; the overindulgent (in alcohol and women) master who seems to care little about those he’s supposed to love but so much about his family’s outward reputation and his business; the spoiled but troubled daughter – before.

Though this work could use some improvement, particularly in the characterization, it is Boden’s first published work, and I grant her some credit there. I’ll look for more of this author’s works to see if experience grants improvement.

A story of slavery unlike any others I have read
By PT Cruiser
Although I've read a lot of articles and books about slavery over the years, I don't think anything I've read put me into the shoes of a woman who was a slave in such a disturbing way as Marlen Suyapa Bodden does in this book. It made me feel the resignation and hopelessness of most of the slaves, even though Sarah Campbell, one of the main characters, had hopes of someday escaping the plantation. The story was both emotionally difficult to read in parts and filled with determination and hope in others. Bodden did a very good job of making her characters seem real and showing the story from two different points of view, that of Sarah Campbell, a young woman who is a slave, and Theodora Allen, the wife of the plantation owner for whom Sarah works.

The owner of the plantation, Cornelius Allen, is not only very heartless toward most of the slaves, he also treats his own wife, Theodora very poorly. Although she has a lot of money to do spend on the home and clothing for herself and her daughter, she doesn't have much more freedom than the slaves who work for them. The story also is a study in how corrupt those in power can become, both in their personal estates and in politics. It's easy to see in this story how ingrained slavery is during this period and the obstacles that had to be overcome to get out of it. Bodden illustrated in very stark terms what it was like to be "owned" by another person or persons. Sarah was given to the master's daughter, who she grew up with while her mother was a cook for the plantation, when she got married. And it was all so matter of fact that this was the way it would be.

This book had me staying up late at night to read "just a few more pages", sometimes just to leave the story on a more hopeful page. I was surprised that this is Bodden's first novel. Her writing was that of a much more seasoned author. I hope she'll be writing more.

In The Band (Luminescent Juliet Book 1), by Jean Haus

Eighteen-year-old Riley Middleton should be far away from home, about to start her freshman year of college on a full-ride scholarship she earned with her unmatched skills on the drums. But instead of marching-band practice and dorm life, Riley is stuck at home—her family needs her. In an effort to help her regain her rhythm, Riley’s best friends encourage her to try out as the drummer for the hot college rock band Luminescent Juliet. But when Riley shows up for the audition, the three band members aren’t what she expected: all of them have more ego than Riley wants to deal with, and they all are drop-dead gorgeous.

Sparks immediately fly with Romeo, the band’s dark-haired and sexy lead guitar player, who doesn’t want Riley in his band and relentlessly pushes her to quit. But drumming is all that’s keeping Riley’s spirit alive—she has to make this work, and if that means ignoring both Romeo’s taunts and his dangerously smoldering looks, she’ll find a way to stay in the band.

As Luminescent Juliet’s fame increases, Riley finds herself caught among the egos and magnetism of her bandmates. If she wants to play the drums, she must find a way to ignore the sparks that threaten to ignite the tensions simmering onstage, ready to explode into a raging fire of passion at any moment.

This book is intended for mature teen audiences due to strong language and some sexual content.

Oh Where Art My Romeo!
By Ttime30
Loved loved loved this book!
It's no secret that I tend to gravitate to the books that have kick ass women and hot guys... Band members at that!
Riley is a great drummer, skate boards, dresses, acts, and shows no fear. She makes no apologizes to anyone. It's refreshing to have an author write a story about a strong woman and not have her be this homely lookin girl. And on the flip side she is forever loyal to her family and does anything to help them out.
Romeo Oh Romeo. And doing another 180, the author introduces you to Romeo who from all outside appearances is this hot womanizing jerk. Then Jean Haus pulls back his layers and you find yourself only wishing that this guy lives next door to you.
Riley had to give up so much of herself to stay at home and take care of her mom and sister because of her parents divorce was heartbreaking. Only to have her try and find something to help give herself a little peace so she tried out for a band. Romeo not wanting any part of her in his band. Not explaining himself he made it a point to try to get her to quit. Riley being as determined as she is wasn't going to let that happen. And that's when the fireworks begin....
I really enjoyed the little insight at the end where the author showed Romeos POV during Riley's band audition. Wow!
Jean Haus did a wonderful job in telling this tale. From the first page I was hooked. The characters were woven together and kept you invested.

Took Me Completely By Surprise!
By Pretty In Fiction
In the Band by Jean Haus has definitely taken its spot on my list of favorite New Adult novels. A story about a girl joining a band full of hot guys, especially the hot but frustrating guitar player Romeo? Yeah. Who doesn't want to read about that?

More times than not, in books like this one, I end up disliking the main character within the first few pages. For some reason, they always seem like the same down-and-out, sarcastic, defensive girl who can't let anyone get close to her. That is so not the case with Riley. She's real, low key, honest and funny. And I connected to her immediately.

Riley feels guilt about her family's problems, things that have nothing to do with her. She cooks, cleans, takes care of her sister, all while her mother sinks further into depression. And Riley is the one who is left feeling guilty for wanting to "waste time" in a band or with a boy. I felt such sympathy for Riley, I felt an understanding for why she felt the way she did, but I also had some frustration because Riley was the only member of her family to act like an adult and step up to the plate, even though none of it was her fault or problem. I kept wishing she'd realize that everyone else needed to deal with there own issues and just give everyone the finger and ditch out on them all. But, of course, Riley being the loving, caring daughter that she is would never do something like that.

Then there's the guitar god known as Romeo. I'm telling you, this book is a swoon-fest and it's all Romeo's fault. This boy definitely lives up to his name. The heat between him and Riley sizzles right off the page. Sure, Romeo's character seems like a bit of wish fulfillment, but he is still slightly flawed (in a way that makes him even more attractive). Basically, he reminds me a lot of Lucas from Easy. And I know many of you love Lucas from Easy just as much as I do. And there's even a little extra at the end of the book, a pivotal scene in Romeo's POV, that gives the reader a nice little look inside his head.

In the Band is a mature YA/New Adult novel and, due to a little sexual content, is not recommended for younger readers. But, it it's a steamy romance in the same vein as Easy you're after, then In the Band is the book for you!

Rat-A-Tat-Tat Romance!
By Amanda Clark
This is one of the sweetest, funniest, most amazing books I have read yet! The story centers around a young girl who loves playing the drums and after giving up her scholarship to play for a school and a major drumline joins a local band to help her family. Once she joins the band she starts to realize she is attracted to the bands guitarist. He treats her like sh¡t but she is determined to stick it out until she discovers he isn't such a jerk after all.

I can't even begin to express my feelings about this book. I was in the marching band as a drummer when I was in high school and I could absolutely identify with Riley. Being so in love with an instrument and not being able to play it is very hard to get over especially when it's all you've got. Like riley my mom was raising me alone and my drums kept me company. Riley has to balance her home life with her school and music then Romeo comes into the picture and shakes up her world.

It has some tough moments that had my heart breaking to pieces for both Riley and Romeo but once you get past the hard stuff, you get rewarded with a beautiful conclusion.

I thought Sleeping Handsome was my favorite of hers but she blew my mind with this book! Bringing back beautiful wonderful memories of my childhood was only one bonus of reading this book, the next best bonus was the steamy romance bits we see between some of the characters! I love when a book doesn't get TOO in depth with the saucy stuff but is descriptive enough to make you want to fan yourself! That is when you know you have a good author on your hands! They can draw the emotion out of you instead of just laying it all out there!

This is a gem to read and I know I will be rereading it again and again in the future! Everything was just fantastic, the writing, the characters, the emotional depth and the romance was the ice cream sundae but the music and the plot was the cherry on top that really makes this book special! I am going to STFU now because I could ramble on and on and on....

It?s report card day at Bear County School?a day Brother Bear has been dreading. He?s received horrible marks in all of his classes, except gym. If only his grades were based on how many strike-outs he?s pitched or soccer balls he?s stopped and not on fractions and vocabulary.

Grades, soup, and stereotypes.
By Abhinav Agarwal
Brother Bear has not been studying, spending most of his time in physical education. When the report card comes, it is expectedly unpleasant, and Papa Bear unsurprisingly explodes. Will Brother Bear stay grounded for kingdom come, or will he be able turn around his grades. This

While the emphasis on having a balanced approach to school, judiciously balancing sports and studies, what some parents may not like is the excessive stereotyping of parents in the book. The father, Papa Bear, is angry, shouts, screams, and grounds Brother Bear. Mama Bear allows Papa Bear to berate his son, and timidly steps in only when things threaten to get worse. While it may be true that some fathers behave that way, and it certainly is a stereotypical image of the stern father concerned more with outcomes than with effort, the book does little to either try and change that or send a more nuanced message.

Empress Dowager Cixi, by Jung Chang

A New York Times Notable Book

Empress Dowager Cixi (1835–1908) is the most important woman in Chinese history. She ruled China for decades and brought a medieval empire into the modern age.
At the age of sixteen, in a nationwide selection for royal consorts, Cixi was chosen as one of the emperor’s numerous concubines. When he died in 1861, their five-year-old son succeeded to the throne. Cixi at once launched a palace coup against the regents appointed by her husband and made herself the real ruler of China—behind the throne, literally, with a silk screen separating her from her officials who were all male.

In this groundbreaking biography, Jung Chang vividly describes how Cixi fought against monumental obstacles to change China. Under her the ancient country attained virtually all the attributes of a modern state: industries, railways, electricity, the telegraph and an army and navy with up-to-date weaponry. It was she who abolished gruesome punishments like “death by a thousand cuts” and put an end to foot-binding. She inaugurated women’s liberation and embarked on the path to introduce parliamentary elections to China. Chang comprehensively overturns the conventional view of Cixi as a diehard conservative and cruel despot.

Cixi reigned during extraordinary times and had to deal with a host of major national crises: the Taiping and Boxer rebellions, wars with France and Japan—and an invasion by eight allied powers including Britain, Germany, Russia and the United States. Jung Chang not only records the Empress Dowager’s conduct of domestic and foreign affairs, but also takes the reader into the depths of her splendid Summer Palace and the harem of Beijing’s Forbidden City, where she lived surrounded by eunuchs—one of whom she fell in love, with tragic consequences. The world Chang describes here, in fascinating detail, seems almost unbelievable in its extraordinary mixture of the very old and the very new.

Based on newly available, mostly Chinese, historical documents such as court records, official and private correspondence, diaries and eyewitness accounts, this biography will revolutionize historical thinking about a crucial period in China’s—and the world’s—history. Packed with drama, fast paced and gripping, it is both a panoramic depiction of the birth of modern China and an intimate portrait of a woman: as the concubine to a monarch, as the absolute ruler of a third of the world’s population, and as a unique stateswoman.

From Publishers Weekly
Her original first name was considered too inconsequential to enter in the court registry, yet she became the most powerful woman in 19th-century China. Born in 1835 to a prominent Manchu family, Cixi was chosen in 1852 by the young Chinese Emperor Xianfeng as one of his concubines. Literate, politically aware, and graceful rather than beautiful, Cixi was not Xianfeng's favorite, but she delivered his firstborn son in 1856. When the emperor died in 1861, he bequeathed his title to this son, with regents to oversee his reign. Cixi did not trust these men to competently rule China, so she conspired with Empress Zhen, her close friend and the deceased emperor's first wife, to orchestrate a coup. Memoirist Chang (Wild Swans) melds her deep knowledge of Chinese history with deft storytelling to unravel the empress dowager's behind-the-throne efforts to "Make China Strong" by developing international trade, building railroads and utilities, expanding education, and constructing a modern military. Cixi's actions and methods were at times controversial, and in 1898 she thwarted an assassination attempt sanctioned by Emperor Guangxu, her adopted son. Cixi's power only increased after this, and she finally exacted revenge on Guangxu just before her death in 1908. Illus.

From Booklist
Chang, author of the impeccable Wild Swans (2003), provides a revisionist biography of a controversial concubine who rose through the ranks to become a long-reigning, power- wielding dowager empress during the delicate era when China emerged from its isolationist cocoon to become a legitimate player on the international stage. As Cixi’s power and influence grew—she actually helped orchestrate the coup of 1861 that led directly to her own dominion as regent—she radically shifted official attitudes toward Western thoughts, ideas, trade, and technology. Ushering in a new era of openness, she not only brought medieval China into the modern age, but she also served double duty as a feminist champion and icon. When an author as thorough, gifted, and immersed in Chinese culture as Chang writes, both scholars and general readers take notice. --Margaret Flanagan

Review

A New York Times Notable Book
A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice
An Economist Best Book for Fall

“Empress Dowager Cixi is revisionist history at its most exuberant. As with her damning Mao exegesis, Chang hasn’t only a gut conviction about her subject. Extensive research, often into previously unexamined sources, produces hard evidence of both Cixi’s formidable gifts as a strategist, and her sincere efforts at reform. It is a wild narrative ride…. Her enthusiasm for Cixi, along with the astounding details of a half-century of outsized Chinese history, makes for a compelling, lively account, rich with drama and intrigue.” —Charles Foran, The Globe and Mail

“Absorbing…. [Chang’s] extensive use of new Chinese sources makes a strong case for a reappraisal…. What makes reading this new biography so provocative are the similarities between the challenges faced by the Qing court a century ago and those confronting the Chinese Communist Party today…. There is much to learn here from the experiences of Empress Dowager Cixi.” —Orville Schell, The New York Times Book Review

“A comprehensive biography that is three-dimensional in scope…. The portrait Chang paints of Cixi is complex….With this authoritative and epic biography, Chang harnesses Cixi’s ambition and makes a bold attempt to broadcast Cixi’s achievements against the weight of history while chronicling China at the crossroads of a new era of change.” —Jason Beerman, Toronto Star

“If there is one woman who mattered in the history of modern China, it is the empress dowager Cixi…. She was much maligned as a brutal despot and diehard conservative responsible for the fall of the Qing dynasty. That conventional image is queried in this detailed and beautifully narrated biography, which at long last restores the empress dowager to her rightful place…. [Chang] has a wonderful eye for the telling detail and excels at unraveling palace intrigues and corridor politics…. She is the first to devote a whole book to Cixi and place her at the very heart of modern Chinese history.” —Frank Dikotter, The Sunday Times

“[Empress Dowager Cixi] is…a model of the biographical form. Meticulously researched, and written in crystalline prose, the book fashions, from the indeterminate detail of Cixi’s life, and the tumultuous history though which she led her country, a narrative of remarkable cohesion and concision.” —Jonathan Chatwin, Asian Review of Books

Read it if you want to understand China today
By Dale Dellinger
This is a very interesting book about Chinese history in the 19th and early 20th centuries, from the point of view of the central government -- specifically the Qing court.

At first look, this book appears to be a biography of one person, but in fact it gives great insight into China during an important (and I'd say misunderstood time) as it emerged from its isolation in the 19th century.

I must admit I didn't know much about the Empress Dowager Cixi before reading this book. When I was in Beijing several years ago, I had heard about her taking money earmarked for modernizing the navy and diverting it to build a stone pavilion shaped like a boat at the Summer Palace. My impression was that she was very backward, ignorant of the west, and controlling. On the contrary, the author, Jung Chang, is very sympathetic towards Cixi and he often showed me how my original impression of her was wrong, and she was much more than the caricature I had in my mind. She cared for China -- her motto was "China Strong". She was curious about the West and was impressed by the West's technology, their political systems, and how the West treated it's own citizens, and she adopted (or tried to adopt) many facets of the West. Many times, she was hampered by conservatives who didn't want to change.

This is also a book about a smart woman who became leader of 1/3 of the world's population -- not by birth, but by her own will -- when she was in her 20s and remained a strong force in a country for most of the rest of her life. It's telling that historians are not clear of what her original name was -- Cixi is an honorific name -- women's names weren't important enough to record, even when they were the emperor's mother.

The book got a little tiresome to me somewhere in the second half, but keep with it and be sure to read the epilogue. This one chapter outlines Cixi's lasting impacts and ties together the rest of the book with modern day China.

By the way, about that stone boat story -- Cixi did pay for some of the renovation of the Summer Palace with funds that were earmarked for the navy, but Chang quickly points out that she paid for much of it out of her household budget and that it didn't have an effect on the strength of the navy. She was much more frugal in many other ways than that extravagance would imply.

If you would like to know how China got to where it is today, this book is one you should read along the way. After reading it, I feel that Cixi has gotten a bad rap and this book might reverse some of that.

Compelling and engaging study of the Empress Dowager Cixi
By Z Hayes
When I was teaching in Singapore, the history syllabus covered the reign of the Empress Dowager Cixi, or Tzu- Hsi, as she was also known. I find her to be a complex and incredibly intelligent woman who bucked the restrictions imposed upon her gender during a period where females were extremely oppressed to rise through the ranks and become one of the most powerful women in China's history. Though Cixi has been reviled by many as a despot, author Jung Chang, who also wrote the amazing Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, provides a starkly different perspective, one that shines the spotlight on the Empress Dowager's many achievements.

The book also provides the reader with a compelling look into the politics of governing China during the period. As one of Emperor Xianfeng's many royal concubines, Cixi distinguished herself not only because she provided the emperor with a son, but was also known for her political acumen, and this proved helpful when the Emperor died five years later. Employing cunning strategies, Cixi positioned herself as the real ruler of China, with her son installed as the Emperor Tongzhi.

Using recently accessible historical documents, primarily in Chinese, the author paints a compelling portrait of a woman who went against the grain and helped propel China into the modern era with significant strides being made in diverse fields such as economy, military, education, etc. One of the significant social reforms, at least in my opinion, was the banning of the cruel and antiquated practice of female foot-binding which saw many young women crippled way before their time, and prevented women from being more productive participants in society.

I admit that it was difficult to reconcile the dominant view of the Empress Dowager as a cruel, ultra conservative with this reformist Empress, but Jung Chang makes a compelling case and backs up her work with historical evidence. I'm no historian, but I found this book to be well-written and cogent, and think it will appeal to those who are interested in Chinese history and politics.

A Consumate Political Animal
By Loves the View
In total contravention to informed opinion, this author holds The Dowager Empress Cixi in awe and considers her a reformer. I was looking forward to what the author of Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China might have to say about Cixi and was disappointed that not much in the premise holds up. The Dowager's actions, as cited in this very text, contradict the author's premise.

Women's roles in history are obscured and underrated. Cixi is not obscure and takes on her shoulders the centuries of tradition and resistance to change that put China in a weak position to deal with the modern world. Jung Chang gives no information to show that Cixi's leadership did anything to reverse this trend. What she does show is that Cixi is a consummate politician.

Cixi lucked out in producing the first male child for the Emperor Xianfeng and was befriended his wife the empress. Upon the emperor's death, Cixi aligned with Empress Zhen and they plotted their way to power. Upon the death of her son, the Emperor Tongzhi, on whom her position depended, she adopted her three year old nephew who became Emperor Guangxu. She controlled him and wheedled his power away from him. When he became an adult, discredited and imprisoned him. She later murdered him, for the good of China... of course. None of her power was used to reform China. It seems to have been used to appoint people who would perpetuate her own power and kill others who (may have) threatened it. As could easily be predicted, she was against the Boxer rebels until they were effective; then she supported them; and then when they were squelched by the westerners, she cozied up to the westerners. She promised China a constitutional monarchy... after her death, of course.

The text is often a paean that contradicts Cixi's life and actions. Page 344 tributes "Cixi's sense of fairness... penchant for consensus". This hardly fits the narrative to this point, the most dramatic example being Jade (the Emperor Guangxu's favorite concubine) for whom there was no room in the flight from the Boxers. Jade did not obey Cixi's orders to commit suicide, nor did Cixi notice the consensus of the eunuchs who did not step forward to push her into the well (p. 279) as she had ordered. Cixi had to order specific Eunuch to do this, who would surely not have done it had he thought he had a choice. On p. 354, after a whole book showing how Cixi excluded Han Chinese from the inner councils of running their own country, we learn that "she was not given to racial prejudice".

The last section, on the "Real Revolution of Modern China" is replete with examples of how the text, itself, discredits the thesis that Cixi is a reformer. In this "reform period" Cixi is enjoying her new western friends, to whose countries China is indebted; they shower her with gifts and attention. Cixi (p.326) issued an edict banning foot-binding and "approached the implementation ... with characteristic caution ... not her style to force drastic change" and it took a generation (i.e. regime change) because "Cixi was prepared to wait". Later, on p. 371 Jung Chung calls foot-binding a practice to which Cixi "put an end." It took a boycott (p. 349) of a reception by her British friends for her to issue an edit banning "bastinado" - the beating of prisoners to death. Future eliminations use various other methods and were covered up.

The book is good for its easy to follow chronology. The descriptions of the pageantry; crimson ink, seals and boxes; eunuch life; the education of young emperors; the culture of outbursts (weeping, banging heads on the floor, prostration for apology); and the mundane (what pipe attendants do and how they are trained) are excellent. The photographs, like the cover are great.

Are Cixi's mistakes, for which she apologized, greater than Mao's, for which he didn't? (p.373) Jung Chang, who was on the receiving end of Mao's "mistakes" considers Cixi's minimal compared with her achievements. From this volume, I appreciate Cixi's political achievements for herself, but find achievements for China lacking.
