Although Eric and Andrew have been trying to keep up a semblance of normal life, they know their thirteen-year-old son Jack has been having a tough time of it since they separated. They've been concerned, but now they're terrified—Jack has run away from home. It happened once before, just after the separation, but then it was only a matter of hours before Eric found him. This time, Jack disappeared with his cousin, and the two of them haven't been seen for more than twenty-four hours. Desperate, Eric and Andrew call on private investigator Jane Lawless, a friend of Andrew's from years ago. Despite the fact that her business partner, A.J. Nolan, is now in a wheelchair and struggling with depression, Jane agrees to help out. But after examining Eric and Andrew's home, Jane's first impression of the case isn't good—in fact, she's not convinced the boys ran away at all. She thinks they may have been abducted…or worse.

In Lambda Literary Award–winner Hart's absorbing 21st mystery featuring Minneapolis, Minn., PI and restaurateur Jane Lawless (after 2012's Rest for the Wicked), Jane's friend Andrew Waltz enlists her help when his 12-year-old son, Jack Lindstrom, and his nephew, Gabriel Born (also 12), go missing on an overnight camping trip. Meanwhile, Andrew and his estranged partner, Eric Lindstrom, must deal with antigay prejudice. Conservatives in the congregation of Suzanne Born, Gabriel's minister mother, don't exactly welcome diversity in their church. Soon a ransom demand arrives for $100,000, and Jane faces unpleasant choices in obtaining the money and in sorting out the roles of potential suspects, who include a local science teacher under pressure for refusing to teach intelligent design. Some unexpected twists and turns, as well as the uncertainties of Jane's love life and the activities of her irrepressible best friend, Cordelia Thorn (a treasure of mystery fiction), will keep the reader guessing. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider Literary. (Oct.)
From Booklist
Lesbian sleuth Jane Lawless confronts one of her most frightening situations: children gone missing. Seamlessly integrating enough backstory to orient readers new to the series, Hart also quickly establishes restaurateur Lawless’ professional skills as a part-time PI as she deftly secures the details pertaining to the disappearance of Eric and Andrew’s hot-headed, charismatic 12-year-old son, Jack, and develops a search strategy. Jack has previously masterminded risky situations with his less volatile cousin, Gabriel, who is troubled, having recently consented to genetic testing since his father died of ALS. But have the boys escalated their adventures? As the adults continue their seemingly fruitless efforts to find Jack, Hart observes that their “driving around was as much about the need for movement as it was about the actual search” as Jane brings her formidable skills to the fore. But will her expertise prepare her for seeing a ghost from the past? A compelling addition to Hart’s always entertaining series. --Whitney Scott

round up the usual suspects
By Susan Gilberg
I have followed Jane Lawless for 20 years, & we were the same age when I read the first book. She is still in her forties & I am now a senior citizen. Oh well, I still enjoy the goings on of the cast of characters. I thought this book was well plotted, & it held my interest to the end. I like that things do not always work out perfectly for Jane, it's very true to life. And her complicated love life is, unfortunately, very common in the real world. Kudos to the author for addressing several issues of great importance, not just gay bashing but creationism and child molesting as well. This is a very good read!

Still enjoying Jane Lawless' adventures
By Amazon Customer
Although I've read this whole series, the stories haven't yet become predictable or boring as has happened in some other series. I enjoy and like the characters, their relationships, and have enjoyed seeing them change and mature over time. In addition, what fun to recognize the settings and understand the culture of stories taking place in my home town/state.

a little off her game
By Bobbie G
I love the Jane Lawless mysteries, but found this one a little disappointing, somewhat predictable and flat. The runaway/abducted child plot is getting a little old, and there was less backstory--about Jane, her friends, and her relationships. It is that backstory that makes this series so interesting. The best part -- the schoolteacher!
