The Complete Training of Horse and Rider, by Alois Podhajsky

For over a quarter of a century, Colonel Alois Podhajsky was the Director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, home of the famous white Lipizzaner stallions whose remarkable performances have thrilled audiences throughout the world. Now for the first time, Col. Podhajsky has set forth explicitly and in practical, instructive fashion the step-by-step methods of training both horse and rider that are used at the School and that are the applicable foundations of all good horsemanship, for their purpose is to develop the natural abilities of the horse and to make riding a graceful, pleasurable experience.

The Ultimate Horse Book
By Flame_926
In my opinion this is one of the finest horsemanship novels ever written. Alois Podhajsky, dressage icon and former head of the Spanish Riding School, has created an exemplary literary piece that few horse books ever come close to. The book is divided into six chapters; each chapter has smaller subsections for easy referencing. Although younger readers may find this book to be "long" or "boring" due to its eloquent vocabulary, any serious horseman (or woman) will find this to be an exceptional novel. For people with little time I would recommend reading small sections at a time. The author explains so much that the reader should reflect on what he or she is learning, not just try to "cram" through it. The explanations in this book resulted in a marked improvement in my own skills, and I often refer other riders back to it whenever they are having trouble. Podhajsky makes even the most complex dressage manuvers easy to comprehend. I especially liked the way that he formed two different chapters on "the training of the horse" and "the training of the rider." By breaking the two concepts apart, a rider is able to first read of what the horse should be doing and then what he or she should be doing at the same time. Other chapters are about the principles of riding, definitions and key concepts, saddles and bridles, and the Spanish Riding School. The photographs and drawings in the novel are logical and illustrate the points wonderfully. Wise is the rider (even Western riders will benefit from the control and balance exercises) that buys this book; it is the perfect companion to horsemanship lessons.

Dressage Technical Manual
By cellomerl
This is an absolute must-read for anyone who rides dressage horses. It's like a basic textbook. For the earthbound, or for the rent-a-pony crowd, it will be a crashing bore. Podhajsky is not an easy-reading "how to ride" book. This is a very technical manual for serious riders, and it is engrossing. Podhajsky's attitude toward positive reinforcement as a training aid is right on, as is his discussion of how the training of horses was often misdirected in the past. My only complaint is that I wish there were more illustrations.

All the Missing Pieces
By A Customer
While reading this book it occured to me that of all the years I have spent with horses and all the trainers I have watched work, none have ever been as thorough or "filled in all the holes" with the basics as Podhajsky. Only when one truly understands the "basics" of horsemanship can they teach it to the horse no matter what discipline of riding they do. This book is a benefit to anyone who wants to develop their relationship with their horse!

Review
Jennfier is in a unique position to write this book. Not only are her kids on the spectrum, so are she and hubby. In addition, she is a school teacher. That makes for a pretty encompassiong view on what it means to be on the spectrum, raise a child on the spectrum and teach a child on spectrum... This book is full of insight and simple useful tips... If you are the parent or teacher of a child on the spectrum, I highly recomment it. -- Aunt Aspie's Book of the Month! (... )her first book, was so innovative and refreshing... Jen cleverly uses the quick Aspie mind to its own advantage by encouraging analysis and insight... If you have a child with Asperger's or high-functioning autism, it'll have much the same effect as an invigorating run along the beach. -- Aukids The book contains many practical suggestions for educating children with Asperger syndrome at home. O'Toole analyses the difficulties and challenges with perception and insight, showing how to help children for whom everyday activities may be upsetting and incomprehensible. -- HEAS Asperkids has LOTS of practical ideas that will really help kids on the spectrum. I completely agree that using a child's passion is the best way to motivate learning. -- Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures A mother with Asperger syndrome (AS) and three Aspie children, O'Toole is uniquely situated to understand the best ways to approach parenting and teaching youths with AS... O'Toole approaches the Aspie lifestyle with a great deal of humor and insight. She's particularly good at explaining the hurdles Aspie children face daily as they navigate school and social settings, and she helps readers see the world the way anyone with AS does. The result is an easy-to-read guide to interacting with Aspie children, replete with additional resources and references. -- Library Journal Reviews Full of effective and enjoyable ways to engage (such) children, and offers guidance and insight to other parents, as well as teachers and other practitioners. -- Young Minds Magazine Her book presents an insider's perspective into the world of Asperger syndrome which would be very helpful to anyone who seeks to understand the condition. Many effective and original ways of engaging with Asperger children are presented. -- HEAS (Homes Education Advisory Service) Within seconds of opening the book I had shed a few tears, and later, as I continued reading in the bath (...) I had several more unexpected cries. These were all moments of pure recognition, and with each one came a mixture of joy, release and relief. Not only does O'Toole describe so many ways of being that sound just like my little L, but I could also connect with much of what she said about being a Mum. Not only does this woman understand what it is to be an Aspie (she is one), she also understands what it is to be the parent of one (she has there) and the wife of one. What could top that in terms of a well-rounded viewpoint?... O'Toole accurately grasps my hopes for L and his future, that he can move forward with an understanding and pride in himself, and that he will see the positive aspects to having those Spectrum qualities as well as some of the challenges he will inevitably face... I now feel that I've got a way in to L's mind which is so much more meaningful that the off-piste advice I am given by well-meaning but autism-ignorant professionals. One of my friends, who also has a son on the Spectrum, once commented that she wished she could see inside her son's head for a while. "Asperkids" and all it offers, may just be one way to do it. -- Loving Martians - Wordpress blog by Rebecca Mitchell I read this book in just two consecutive sittings - loved it!... As Aspie herself, Jenny is quite brilliant and as a teacher and parent she is doubly insightful into her own children's needs and how to help them. -- Netbuddy.co.uk Amazing. Jennifer's ability to share her Asperger perspective and explain what our kids need most in the home and in school is fantastic. She gets right to what matters and makes powerful points that have to be heard. On both a personal and a professional level, I say this is a book that needs to be on shelves everywhere. -- Meredith G. Bove, MBA, Educational Strategies Consultant and mother of a son with Asperger Syndrome, USA Jennifer provides a unique perspective into the world of Asperger syndrome - helping to put all the pieces together, with a little humor thrown in along the way. I will highly recommend this book to any Asper-parent to better understand their child's world and help them grow, learn, and develop based on their unique strengths. -- Courtney Enos, MS-OT, occupational therapist, Touchstone Therapy, North Carolina, USA Asperkids has touched my heart to its deepest core, brought tears to my eyes, knowledge to my mind and an in-depth understanding of Asperger Syndrome. It is beautifully written, easy to understand and incredibly sincere. I will most definitely stock the shelves of our psychological book store with this wonderful, insightful book. Kudos to Jennifer Cook O'Toole for her passion, love and knowledge of Asperger syndrome and her willingness and eagerness to share it with everyone. -- Diane Chartrand-Balcer, Purchasing Director for Insomnia Bookstore at Southeast Psychology, North Carolina, USA Fresh, honest, organic and raw insights - Jennifer has written a legacy for all those on the spectrum, inviting everyone into an intricate and delicious mindset of an Asperfamily's challenges and successes. This book is a literary feast of new and exciting creative ideas and strategies which are shared in a very unique conversational manner. This book may be the key to unlocking a new and successful way of teaching and communicating with persons on the spectrum. -- Josie Santomauro, mother of a son with Asperger syndrome, editor of Autism All-Stars: How We Use Our Autism and Asperger Traits to Shine in Life and co-author of Set for Success: Activities for Teaching Emotional, Social and Organisational Skills Jennifer Cook O'Toole's personal understanding of the Asperger 'profile' makes Asperkids a fascinating read. In it she gives a wealth of exciting and innovative 'detours' around the challenges of AS and has provided a book full of lively and enthusiastic ideas to get you really enjoying working with your Asperger child. This is one of the most respectful books about teaching children with Asperger syndrome I have read and I thoroughly recommend it. -- Clare Lawrence, teacher, autism worker, mother, and author of Autism and Flexischooling: A Shared Classroom and Homeschooling Approach and How to Make School Make Sense: A Parents' Guide to Helping the Child with Asperger Syndrome Asperkids is brilliant!
(Aunt Aspie's Book of the Month!)

(... )her first book, was so innovative and refreshing... Jen cleverly uses the quick Aspie mind to its own advantage by encouraging analysis and insight... If you have a child with Asperger's or high-functioning autism, it'll have much the same effect as an invigorating run along the beach. (Aukids)

The book contains many practical suggestions for educating children with Asperger syndrome at home. O'Toole analyses the difficulties and challenges with perception and insight, showing how to help children for whom everyday activities may be upsetting and incomprehensible. (HEAS)

Asperkids has LOTS of practical ideas that will really help kids on the spectrum. I completely agree that using a child's passion is the best way to motivate learning. (Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures)

A mother with Asperger syndrome (AS) and three Aspie children, O'Toole is uniquely situated to understand the best ways to approach parenting and teaching youths with AS.... (Library Journal Reviews)

Full of effective and enjoyable ways to engage (such) children, and offers guidance and insight to other parents, as well as teachers and other practitioners. (Young Minds Magazine)

Her book presents an insider's perspective into the world of Asperger syndrome which would be very helpful to anyone who seeks to understand the condition. Many effective and original ways of engaging with Asperger children are presented. (HEAS (Homes Education Advisory Service))

Within seconds of opening the book I had shed a few tears, and later, as I continued reading in the bath (...) I had several more unexpected cries. (Loving Martians - Wordpress blog by Rebecca Mitchell)

I read this book in just two consecutive sittings - loved it!... As Aspie herself, Jenny is quite brilliant and as a teacher and parent she is doubly insightful into her own children's needs and how to help them. (Netbuddy.co.uk)

Amazing. Jennifer's ability to share her Asperger perspective and explain what our kids need most in the home and in school is fantastic. She gets right to what matters and makes powerful points that have to be heard. On both a personal and a professional level, I say this is a book that needs to be on shelves everywhere. (Meredith G. Bove, MBA, Educational Strategies Consultant and mother of a son with Asperger Syndrome, USA)

Jennifer provides a unique perspective into the world of Asperger syndrome - helping to put all the pieces together, with a little humor thrown in along the way. I will highly recommend this book to any Asper-parent to better understand their child's world and help them grow, learn, and develop based on their unique strengths. (Courtney Enos, MS-OT, occupational therapist, Touchstone Therapy, North Carolina, USA)

Asperkids has touched my heart to its deepest core, brought tears to my eyes, knowledge to my mind and an in-depth understanding of Asperger Syndrome. (Diane Chartrand-Balcer, Purchasing Director for Insomnia Bookstore at Southeast Psychology, North Carolina, USA)

Fresh, honest, organic and raw insights - Jennifer has written a legacy for all those on the spectrum, inviting everyone into an intricate and delicious mindset of an Asperfamily's challenges and successes. This book is a literary feast of new and exciting creative ideas and strategies which are shared in a very unique conversational manner. This book may be the key to unlocking a new and successful way of teaching and communicating with persons on the spectrum. (Josie Santomauro, mother of a son with Asperger syndrome, editor of Autism All-Stars: How We Use Our Autism and Asperger Traits to Shine in Life and co-author of Set for Success: Activities for Teaching Emotional, Social and Organisational Skills)

Jennifer Cook O'Toole's personal understanding of the Asperger 'profile' makes Asperkids a fascinating read. (Clare Lawrence, teacher, autism worker, mother, and author of Autism and Flexischooling: A Shared Classroom and Homeschooling Approach and How to Make School Make Sense: A Parents' Guide to Helping the Child with Asperger Syndrome)

A good book about Education.
By KerryME
This was actually a good book for an educator to read, but it was not what I was looking for. My son has not been diagnosed but I suspect that he has Asperger's. However, he has never had any issues with learning and this book is generally about teaching children with Asperger's. I needed more information on how to help him relate socially and how to show him that at eleven he should know how to tie his shoes, or wipe his face when it has chocolate on it. He just doesn't care about these things, but I think they can be one of the many things alienating him socially, but these sorts of things are not addressed in this book.

An amazing read!
By Jennifer
If you are looking for a great resource on Aspergers, this is the book to read. It's written in such a way that you feel almost like you are sitting with Mrs. Cook O'Toole. She answers the questions most parents with a newly diagnosed child ask in a way that is easy to understand and relatable. (Especially if you are a "neurotypical" parent to an Aspie) For me personally, I found the advice, suggestions, hints, and insight to be a breath of fresh air. It was nice to have this topic covered in a way that wasn't so impersonal and clinical as other books I've read on the topic. Also, being that the author is an Aspie, herself, gave her credibility in a way I haven't felt for other authors on the topic.

I also recommend this book if you have a child with any hyper-focusing issues such as ADD/ADHD, hyper-anxiety, OCD, etc as I've found a lot of the suggestions in this book can be very helpful for kids and parents (teachers, caregivers, counselors, doctors, the list can go on and on here) as well. I've seen my son have more "aha!" moments and less frustration ever since putting some of the suggested techniques into effect at home. Even his neurotypical sister is trying to emulate them which I think will help them have a closer relationship as the grow.

I highly recommend reading Asperkids.

Impressive Debut
By hgoldstein
Jennifer O'Toole's book provides real inspiration for parents and teachers. This is a hands-on resource that is a source of comfort, but it is also a helpful educational aid. As a teacher, I appreciated all the great classroom ideas, in addition to the many recommended resources, like websites, books and educational supply companies that were new to me.
O'Toole's book provides an intimate view of the Aspie experience from one who really knows because she experiences it first-hand every day. This is her life, her husband's life, and the life of her family. Therefore, her book provides the reader with concrete suggestions that can enrich the life of any Aspie.
O'Toole not only shares her intelligence and creativity, but she also provides a role model of a person sensitively dealing with her own diagnosis and that of her children.
This is an impressive debut of an author we will hopefully hear more from.

Ten Little Rabbits, by Sylvia Long, Virginia Grossman

Weaving, fishing, and storytelling are all part of this spirited book that celebrates Native American traditions as it teaches young children to count from one to ten. The book's whimsical illustrations, reminiscent of Beatrix Potter, glow with brilliant color and are filled with fascinating detail. Each number introduces a facet of traditional Native American culture, such as Pueblo corn dances or Navajo weaving, and the simple, rhyming text is enhanced by a brief afterword on Native American customs. Ideal for storytime or bedtime, this is a book sure to leave children counting rabbits instead of sheep. Plus, this is a fixed-format version of the book, which looks nearly identical to the print version.

Amazon.com Review
This winner of the Parents Magazine "Best Book of the Year" award is a simple counting book that celebrates Native American culture--and rabbits, of course. Each of Sylvia Long's detailed, painterly double-page illustrations has an old-fashioned quality that gives the book the feel of classic children's literature from the turn of the century. The accompanying text is a simple, rhythmic series of rhyming couplets. "Three busy messengers sending out the news" has three rabbits using one of their blankets to send smoke signals across a grassy river valley; "Four clever trackers looking for some clues" shows intrepid little hunters with bows and arrows examining the enormous paw-print of a bear. After "Ten sleepy weavers knowing day is done," an extra panel shows one rabbit hunched over a campfire while the other nine sleep soundly. A cut above the mass of counting books. (Baby to age 4) --Richard Farr

From Publishers Weekly
There is a great deal of information and entertainment packed into this unusual counting book, which opens with "One lonely traveler riding on the plain." The strikingly detailed accompanying illustration authentically portrays a Native American riding on a dog-pulled travois. The fact that the Native American is a rabbit is the only note of fantasy, which creates an unusual--and effective--balance between the real and the imaginary. In each subsequent spread, an additional rabbit appears, and the expanding group is seen engaged in such activities as rain-dancing, sending smoke signals, hunting, storytelling, running from a storm, fishing and pounding on a drum. Although Long provides vibrant, earth-toned captivating artwork, some of these concepts and activities may be a bit beyond the book's intended audience. As a bonus for older readers, the book's closing pages provide notes on how specific tribes executed the traditions mentioned in the text. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Not a book about numbers, but a quiet, respectful survey of some Native American customs organized through the structure of a counting rhyme, populated by rabbits dressed in traditional garb, from "one lonely traveler riding on the plain" to "ten sleepy weavers knowing day is done." Notes at the back identify each tribe represented (Plains, Pueblo, Great Lakes, Northwestern, and Southwestern peoples), and provide information about the pictures. The rabbits have an earnest charm reminiscent of Marjorie Flack's industrious family in Heyward's The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes (Houghton, 1974). In double-page spreads adopting the muted colors of the Earth's own dyes, the rabbits play out their tableaux against ample natural vistas that are undisturbed by power lines, asphalt, fences, or the like. Informative pictures invite group sharing, while the gentle mood suits bedtime as well. --Karen Litton, London Public Libraries, Ontario, Canada

A beautiful Counting book
By Nancy C Walker
Having Native American children I am always looking for books for them. I purchased this for my 18 month old (hard cover version). He loves to look at it. He will pull it out at least once a day to look at it. I've even noticed his 8 year old brother sneaking a peek more than once. I love the vibrant, without being bright, illustrations. They are intracate yet simple. The rabbits are adorable. The book starts with one rabbit and continues through to 10. The rabbits are in Native American regalia and doing traditional Native activites

Great book for indian study and patterns.
By Teri
I have read this book to my first grade class during a unit on indians as well as used the patterns in the blankets during a pattern unit in math. The children want to read it again and again!! A great read and a great resource for teachers. My students enjoy making sack puppets and designing their own blanket and then acting out the book.

Fun to read for parents and kids alike!
By Smommy
We loved this book so much, we bought it in both hard cover and paperback formats. It's a great book because the illustrations are gorgeous, the story is original, and you can read it in less than five minutes. Plus it has a rhyming canter without being overly babyish or sing-songy. We love reading it to our one-year-old, but would also be great for young readers as there is not a lot of text and the words are easy. There is also a subtle Native American theme that would lend itself well as a teaching tool.

In this honest and encouraging book, Deborah Schroder explains how art can provide openings into therapeutic relationships and create a safe space for exploring issues and concerns.

Drawing on her own development as an art therapist and her extensive experience of supervising new therapists and students, Schroder provides practical advice on encouraging nervous or reluctant clients, or those unfamiliar with art therapy, to benefit from artmaking. She argues for a two-way sharing of art between therapist and client, exploring not only how specific techniques can be put into practice, but also how they benefit the therapeutic relationship. Providing guidance on moving into deeper work, exploring and containing particular emotions, and bringing the therapeutic relationship to a close, this book is invaluable to new art therapists at all stages of their relationships with clients.

Review
This is a simply written, humorous and enlightening introduction to art therapy. The author gives the reader insight using real life cases, as well as her own sometimes painful reactions while working alongside the client. Overall the book demonstrates the importance of getting to know the client in a counselling relationship. This enables a person to trust and feel secure, something missing from many young people's everyday relationships. I will keep this book in my tool bag, to dip into when working with young people, as it offers a new way of working that is appropriate, inclusive and manageable in the normal counselling process. -- Relate

Five Stars for a Small Book that really is Big!
By customer
This outstanding book is the perfect text for beginning level art therapy training. It is obviously based on Schroder's extensive clinical experience and is chock full of recommendations and wisdom. Her caring, respectful, sensitive and empathic practices as well as the numerous hands-on experientials guide both beginner and experienced art therapists into ever-deeper levels of understanding of the client-therapist interaction. The short chapters are just the right length for busy students to read, digest, and relate to their own field-based work. I have used this book in graduate-level teaching and find it delightful, highly informative, and a role-model for effective and thoughtful practice.

Great source for understanding the process of art therapy
By Steven M. Smith Psy. D., Licensed Psychologist
I appreciate how the author weaves together the process of doing art therapy with her own experiences. I am able to relate to her inner dialogue and gain insight into my own processes and anxiety in facilitating art therapy or facing colleagues skeptical of the process and modality. Her examples of therapeutic activities show her own creativity as a therapist and an artist. I am a better art therapist for having read this work.
