The Prayer That Stopped the Sun
Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“O sun, stand still over Gibeon,
O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies.
—Joshua 10:12–13
Today’s Bible reading: Joshua 10:1–14
Right here on Day 1, I’m going to throw out a challenge to you: If you’re not daring to believe God for the impossible, you’re sleeping through some of the best parts of your Christian life. And further still, if the size of your vision for your life isn’t intimidating to you, there’s a good chance it’s insulting to God. You should be living by audacious faith every day. Audacity is not just for “elite Christians.” It’s intended for every believer. So today we’re beginning a spiritual journey toward trusting God for what seems impossible. I’m thrilled to think about what it’s going to do for our lives and our world.
A story from the life of Joshua serves as our template for audacious faith.
The Israelites unleash a surprise attack on the Amorites, and right from the beginning the battle goes well. But as the sun sinks toward the horizon, General Joshua faces a decision. The victory isn’t complete, and once it gets dark, the rest of the Amorites will slip away. Joshua sizes up the situation and delivers one of the most gloriously unorthodox prayers in the Bible. He has the audacity to ask God to make the sun stop in the sky. To freeze time on behalf of His people.
And God gives Joshua exactly what he asked for.
With everything in me, I believe God still desires to make the sun stand still over the life of every believer. Obviously, not in the unique way He did for Joshua, but in ways that are equally spectacular (although not always quite as dramatic), God is perfectly willing to perform the impossible in our everyday lives. If we have the audacity to ask.
RT God is ready to act if we will be bold enough to ask, not just for a good day or a better life, but for the impossible.

I tried this one time.
My wife and I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, with seven other families. We set a goal of reaching over one thousand people in our first year of ministry. Since the average church size in America is fewer than ninety, I guess we were overshooting a bit. But we wanted to see God accomplish something so exponentially amazing that it would leave no doubt who deserved the credit.
So we shamelessly asked God to exceed our wildest dreams. The story of our church is still being written. But here’s what I can tell you now. After seven years of ministry, our church has grown to more than twelve thousand people in regular attendance. Since our opening day, thousands of people have publicly professed faith in Christ.
Sometimes when we consider the rate at which God has multiplied this ministry, we feel like we’re living in a warp-speed dream world. But the story is real. We are living in the middle of a move of God.
Is there something that is seemingly impossible that you’d like to see God do through you? Maybe God has already been working in your spirit, planting a desire, sparking ideas about the much bigger things He wants to accomplish.
There’s nothing our world needs more desperately today—in individuals, families, businesses, churches, and communities—than God’s saving, supernatural acts. And God is ready to act if we will be bold enough to ask, not just for a good day or a better life, but for the impossible and then will step forward to act in audacious faith.
prayer focus: Over the next forty days, pray for God to build audacious faith within you and to show you where He wants you to apply it.

The "Sun Stand Still" name comes from the Bible book of Joshua
By Jill H.
"Sun Stand Still Devotional: A 40-Day Experience to Activate Your Faith" contains 40 devotion readings from the book "Sun Stand Still" by Steven Furtick. It is implied that readers will possibly read through the devotions in 40 days (one devotion per day). Each devotion highlights a portion of Scripture, gives a section of Scripture to study, and then those Scriptures are explained in more detail through the devotion reading. At the end of each devotion reading, there is a prayer to focus on. Each devotion draws readers to a deeper audacious faith in what God is doing or will do in their lives. Steven sometimes uses examples from his own life to make a point.
At first I thought the name "Sun Stand Still" was made up but I soon noticed when coming across the introduction and the first devotional that it has a Scriptural meaning from Joshua 10:12-14, where Joshua said a very amazing prayer in the Bible when he prayed to the LORD for the Sun to stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon. Joshua’s prayer was answered, probably because he had audacious faith when he prayed it.
It appeared like the Holy Spirit highlighted certain parts of Scripture I came across while reading through the sections of Scripture it pointed out for me to read at the beginning of the devotions. I have a book I write in about my friendship with Yeshua (Jesus) and I filled almost two pages of highlights that I think might have deepened my friendship with him.
Amazingly, about one or two hours after I finished this book, a friend left me a voice mail and I called her back. She had something in mind to ask me but she also asked me if I found another job yet (I have a job and appreciate it right now but I hope to find something that is more in line with my college education in the near future). I told her I hadn’t found one but I came close. She told me to have faith. My mouth kind of dropped when I heard that because of being so encouraged about having deeper faith by the time I finished this book. I think God sent her into my life today to speak those words to me.
I recommend this devotional book to anybody that wants to learn how to develop a deeper faith life with God and his Son.

A great encouragement to have audacious faith!
By Sherri Wilson Johnson
Steven Furtick is the founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church, which has more than 10,000 people in weekly attendance. Elevation is one of the fastest growing Churches in America. Familiar with this church, its teachings and worship, I was truly excited to read and review the Sun Stand Still devotional by Furtick. It's subtitled A 40-Day Experience to Activate Your Faith. Let me just say, the book did not fail to activate my faith! From day one I found so many nuggets to share, I've been tweeting and sharing via texts to my friends quotes from this book like crazy. I couldn't wait to read the next day's devotional because I knew there was going to be a timely message in it for me. Have you read Jesus Calling? This book had the same effect on me as that book did. I'd open it up and sure enough on that day there was a message that I felt was written directly to me! The book gets its title from the Bible story about Joshua in Joshua 10 where he asks God to make the sun stand still just for a day so that he can accomplish all he needs to accomplish. And God did it! This story is used throughout the book to drive home the message that we serve a mighty God, the Creator of the universe, One who can answer our prayers. Even prayers to stop the sun from setting. He can move mountains. This book seriously reminded me that no matter what circumstances I go through, God is always with me. He wants us to pray ridiculous prayers that most people would scoff at because that's how He shows off. Furtick talks about the importance in having audacious faith and asking God to fulfill something huge in our lives because it shows God that we trust Him and that we know He's a BIG God. We don't want to insult Him with weak prayers. We don't want to pray the prayers of a beggar. We want to get down on our knees and pray prayers like juggernauts. (You'll have to read the book to know what he's talking about.) Don't miss out on this little nugget of goodness.
Here are a few quotes that moved me:
"Stop trying to have all the answers before launching out in faith."
"Faith is not a coping mechanism. It's a weapon of mass destruction to win your spiritual war."
"Sometimes God has to let your dream die so his vision for you can come alive."
"You can't claim God's promises if you don't know God's promises. Saturate your mind with the scriptures."
"You can't hope for the best if you're believing in the worst."
"The greatest movement in the history of humanity sprang from the faith of audacious nobodies."
I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review.

Great condensed version for daily consumption
By Ian Acheson
Having being impressed with the book Sun Stand Still I was excited by the idea of a 40-day condensed devotional version of it.
Both books reflect on Joshua's audacious prayer asking God to freeze time so he and his Israelite army have more time to vanquish the Amorites. And God answers by doing just that.
Furtick believes we all should be living lives of audacious faith where prayers such as Joshua's are common practice and just as importantly we are stepping out in faith so that God can demonstrate His faithfulness to us.
This devotional is excellent. Each day's message is short featuring a passage of Scripture that encourages us to be faithful. Yes, God can be trusted. What I particularly love about Furtick's writing is that he is the master encourager (he'd be a great sports coach) to be able to motivate by demonstrating God's faithfulness and then equip the reader with the tools to utilise to step out in faith.
He also uses a lot of great soundbites that are short, sharp and memorable, such as:
- The proof of faith is the action it produces.
- Faith not only prays. It also pursues.
- Live a life that is explainable only by the existence of a God who is infinitely great.
Furtick shares a number of stories of his own journey in starting his church (which is quite a remarkable story) and this devotional includes some updates which weren't included in the book. Each day's lesson then ends with an accompanying action to pray.
If you're desiring something more for your life, I'd encourage you work through this devotional. You won't be disappointed. I expect I'll keep returning to it on a regular basis.
