The Prayer That Stopped the Sun

Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

“O sun, stand still over Gibeon,
O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies.
—Joshua 10:12–13

Today’s Bible reading: Joshua 10:1–14

Right here on Day 1, I’m going to throw out a challenge to you: If you’re not daring to believe God for the impossible, you’re sleeping through some of the best parts of your Christian life. And further still, if the size of your vision for your life isn’t intimidating to you, there’s a good chance it’s insulting to God. You should be living by audacious faith every day. Audacity is not just for “elite Christians.” It’s intended for every believer. So today we’re beginning a spiritual  journey toward trusting God for what seems impossible. I’m thrilled to think about what it’s going to do for our lives and our world.

A story from the life of Joshua serves as our template for audacious faith.

The Israelites unleash a surprise attack on the Amorites, and right from the beginning the battle goes well. But as the sun sinks toward the horizon, General Joshua faces a decision. The victory isn’t complete, and once it gets dark, the rest of the Amorites will slip away. Joshua sizes up the situation and delivers one of the most gloriously unorthodox prayers in the Bible. He has the audacity to ask God to make the sun stop in the sky. To freeze time on behalf of His people.

And God gives Joshua exactly what he asked for.

With everything in me, I believe God still desires to make the sun stand still over the life of every believer. Obviously, not in the unique way He did for Joshua, but in ways that are equally spectacular (although not always quite as dramatic), God is perfectly willing to perform the impossible in our everyday lives. If we have the audacity to ask.

RT God is ready to act if we will be bold enough to ask, not just for a good day or a better life, but for the impossible.
#sunstandstill

I tried this one time.

My wife and I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, with seven other families. We set a goal of reaching over one thousand people in our first year of ministry. Since the average church size in America is fewer than ninety, I guess we were overshooting a bit. But we wanted to see God accomplish something so exponentially amazing that it would leave no doubt who deserved the credit.

So we shamelessly asked God to exceed our wildest dreams. The story of our church is still being written. But here’s what I can tell you now. After seven years of ministry, our church has grown to more than twelve thousand people in regular attendance. Since our opening day, thousands of people have publicly professed faith in Christ.

Sometimes when we consider the rate at which God has multiplied this ministry, we feel like we’re living in a warp-speed dream world. But the story is real. We are living in the middle of a move of God.

Is there something that is seemingly impossible that you’d like to see God do through you? Maybe God has already been working in your spirit, planting a desire, sparking ideas about the much bigger things He wants to accomplish.

There’s nothing our world needs more desperately today—in individuals, families, businesses, churches, and communities—than God’s saving, supernatural acts. And God is ready to act if we will be bold enough to ask, not just for a good day or a better life, but for the impossible and then will step forward to act in audacious faith.

prayer focus: Over the next forty days, pray for God to build audacious faith within you and to show you where He wants you to apply it.

The "Sun Stand Still" name comes from the Bible book of Joshua
By Jill H.
"Sun Stand Still Devotional: A 40-Day Experience to Activate Your Faith" contains 40 devotion readings from the book "Sun Stand Still" by Steven Furtick. It is implied that readers will possibly read through the devotions in 40 days (one devotion per day). Each devotion highlights a portion of Scripture, gives a section of Scripture to study, and then those Scriptures are explained in more detail through the devotion reading. At the end of each devotion reading, there is a prayer to focus on. Each devotion draws readers to a deeper audacious faith in what God is doing or will do in their lives. Steven sometimes uses examples from his own life to make a point.

At first I thought the name "Sun Stand Still" was made up but I soon noticed when coming across the introduction and the first devotional that it has a Scriptural meaning from Joshua 10:12-14, where Joshua said a very amazing prayer in the Bible when he prayed to the LORD for the Sun to stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon. Joshua’s prayer was answered, probably because he had audacious faith when he prayed it.
It appeared like the Holy Spirit highlighted certain parts of Scripture I came across while reading through the sections of Scripture it pointed out for me to read at the beginning of the devotions. I have a book I write in about my friendship with Yeshua (Jesus) and I filled almost two pages of highlights that I think might have deepened my friendship with him.

Amazingly, about one or two hours after I finished this book, a friend left me a voice mail and I called her back. She had something in mind to ask me but she also asked me if I found another job yet (I have a job and appreciate it right now but I hope to find something that is more in line with my college education in the near future). I told her I hadn’t found one but I came close. She told me to have faith. My mouth kind of dropped when I heard that because of being so encouraged about having deeper faith by the time I finished this book. I think God sent her into my life today to speak those words to me.

I recommend this devotional book to anybody that wants to learn how to develop a deeper faith life with God and his Son.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Waterbrook Multomah for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

A great encouragement to have audacious faith!
By Sherri Wilson Johnson
Steven Furtick is the founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church, which has more than 10,000 people in weekly attendance. Elevation is one of the fastest growing Churches in America. Familiar with this church, its teachings and worship, I was truly excited to read and review the Sun Stand Still devotional by Furtick. It's subtitled A 40-Day Experience to Activate Your Faith. Let me just say, the book did not fail to activate my faith! From day one I found so many nuggets to share, I've been tweeting and sharing via texts to my friends quotes from this book like crazy. I couldn't wait to read the next day's devotional because I knew there was going to be a timely message in it for me. Have you read Jesus Calling? This book had the same effect on me as that book did. I'd open it up and sure enough on that day there was a message that I felt was written directly to me! The book gets its title from the Bible story about Joshua in Joshua 10 where he asks God to make the sun stand still just for a day so that he can accomplish all he needs to accomplish. And God did it! This story is used throughout the book to drive home the message that we serve a mighty God, the Creator of the universe, One who can answer our prayers. Even prayers to stop the sun from setting. He can move mountains. This book seriously reminded me that no matter what circumstances I go through, God is always with me. He wants us to pray ridiculous prayers that most people would scoff at because that's how He shows off. Furtick talks about the importance in having audacious faith and asking God to fulfill something huge in our lives because it shows God that we trust Him and that we know He's a BIG God. We don't want to insult Him with weak prayers. We don't want to pray the prayers of a beggar. We want to get down on our knees and pray prayers like juggernauts. (You'll have to read the book to know what he's talking about.) Don't miss out on this little nugget of goodness.
Here are a few quotes that moved me:
"Stop trying to have all the answers before launching out in faith."
"Faith is not a coping mechanism. It's a weapon of mass destruction to win your spiritual war."
"Sometimes God has to let your dream die so his vision for you can come alive."
"You can't claim God's promises if you don't know God's promises. Saturate your mind with the scriptures."
"You can't hope for the best if you're believing in the worst."
"The greatest movement in the history of humanity sprang from the faith of audacious nobodies."
I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review.

Great condensed version for daily consumption
By Ian Acheson
Having being impressed with the book Sun Stand Still I was excited by the idea of a 40-day condensed devotional version of it.

Both books reflect on Joshua's audacious prayer asking God to freeze time so he and his Israelite army have more time to vanquish the Amorites. And God answers by doing just that.

Furtick believes we all should be living lives of audacious faith where prayers such as Joshua's are common practice and just as importantly we are stepping out in faith so that God can demonstrate His faithfulness to us.

This devotional is excellent. Each day's message is short featuring a passage of Scripture that encourages us to be faithful. Yes, God can be trusted. What I particularly love about Furtick's writing is that he is the master encourager (he'd be a great sports coach) to be able to motivate by demonstrating God's faithfulness and then equip the reader with the tools to utilise to step out in faith.

He also uses a lot of great soundbites that are short, sharp and memorable, such as:

- The proof of faith is the action it produces.
- Faith not only prays. It also pursues.
- Live a life that is explainable only by the existence of a God who is infinitely great.

Furtick shares a number of stories of his own journey in starting his church (which is quite a remarkable story) and this devotional includes some updates which weren't included in the book. Each day's lesson then ends with an accompanying action to pray.

If you're desiring something more for your life, I'd encourage you work through this devotional. You won't be disappointed. I expect I'll keep returning to it on a regular basis.

Copperhead (Ironskin Book 2), by Tina Connolly

Set in an alternate version of early 1900s England, Copperhead is the sequel to Tina Connolly's stunning historical fantasy debut.

Helen Huntingdon is beautiful—so beautiful she has to wear an iron mask.

Six months ago her sister Jane uncovered a fey plot to take over the city. Too late for Helen, who opted for fey beauty in her face—and now has to cover her face with iron so she won't be taken over, her personality erased by the bodiless fey.

Not that Helen would mind that some days. Stuck in a marriage with the wealthy and controlling Alistair, she lives at the edges of her life, secretly helping Jane remove the dangerous fey beauty from the wealthy society women who paid for it. But when the chancy procedure turns deadly, Jane goes missing—and is implicated in a murder.

Meanwhile, Alistair's influential clique Copperhead—whose emblem is the poisonous copperhead hydra—is out to restore humans to their "rightful" place, even to the point of destroying the dwarvven who have always been allies.

Helen is determined to find her missing sister, as well as continue the good fight against the fey. But when that pits her against her own husband—and when she meets an enigmatic young revolutionary—she's pushed to discover how far she'll bend society's rules to do what's right. It may be more than her beauty at stake. It may be her honor...and her heart.

From Publishers Weekly
Moving from the gothic to the political, this feminist urban fantasy (sequel to 2012's Jane Eyre pastiche Ironskin) shifts the war with the Fey from countryside to cityscape. When anti-Fey activist Jane goes missing, her sister, Helen Huntingdon, takes over Jane's role as leader of the anti-Fey forces, which include both humans and dwarvven. Married to the wealthy, useless Alistair, Helen gets involved in organizing the leading ladies of society, fashion, and the arts. With tolerance and tenacity, Helen struggles to overcome prejudice against both dwarvven (as the belligerent pro-human Copperheads chant, One People, One Race) and women while undermining the Fey King's plot against humans and trying to help her sister. Connolly is more inventive than in her previous book, but straying from a good model allows the tension to deflate. More successful than the citywide threat are the domestic dilemmas and a romantic triangle with Helen at its apex. Agent: Ginger Clark, Curtis Brown. (Oct.)

like Garlic Parmesan Kettle Chips for solid crunch of Helen's transformation flavored with fey, period society, and hijinks
By kbirdlincoln
My biggest gripe with the first book in this series, Ironskin, was that I liked a touch more romance in my Fantastical Bronte-esque fiction.

Not so with the second in this series, Copperhead.

In Ironskin we are introduced to a society where the fey and humans have had a big war and now the fey seemed to all but have disappeared back into the forest from whence they came. Except for the startling beautiful faces of the Hundred Society women Rochart made out of fey-infused clay in the first book, Ironskin.

Now Ironskin's main character, Jane, is trying to replace the fey faces with the Hundred's original faces-- including that of her sister, Helen.

Helen wants to help, but what's a girl whose fooled everyone into believing she's air-headed and ditzy to do when fey bits start appearing all over town, Jane disappears, and a secret society begins constructing strange apparatus, making curfews, and taking over the town?

And what about that strange man in black who keeps appearing when Helen needs him most?

Although you could plunge into Helen's story without reading Ironskin, first, I recommend reading the books in order. I think Helen's discovery of her own powers-- with or without her fey face-- are made more poignant by having learned of Jane's story in the first book.

While I did get a bit tangled up when it came to the climactic Helen vs. the Fey King scene at the end to who was doing what with which bits of fey, Helen herself is so much fun to hang along with as she tries to reconcile the role she's played as the dutiful wife and daughter with the desires to protect her sister and the city, that it doesn't matter. The understated, quiet building of feelings between her and the man in black also kept the romance lover in me reading on.

A lovely addition to the series featuring a heroine just as plucky as Jane, but in her own way. (and still a lovely Bronte-esque society without the major borrowings from Jane Eyre that Ironskin had)

This Book's Snack Rating: Garlic Parmesan Kettle Chips for the solid crunch of Helen's transformation flavored with yummy bits of fey, period society, and hijinks

Fabulous Sequel!
By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession)
When I read Ironskin, the companion novel to this one last year I thought it was a pretty unique retelling with fantasy elements that I not only enjoyed but really wanted more of. I didn't quite get the world building and a definite ending that I was hoping for so when this one came out I just knew that it was something I needed to read as well. If not to hopefully get more glimpses of Jane than to at least learn more about the world Jane and Helen lived in.

Where Ironskin was lacking in explanation and world building, this one excelled. The author really came through with wonderful descriptions about the fey, finally explaining the Great War in more length, and delving into the dwarvven beings as well. I was utterly satisfied with where the author took the story and ran with it.

While I wasn't a huge fan of the materialist and sometimes shallow Helen in Ironskin, this was her moment to shine. Her character not only went from a timid self centered young girl to a strong and capable woman but her character grew in all most every way imaginable. She stepped up and took control of a very out of control situation and came through splendidly. In fact her character really grew on me throughout the story and I found myself rooting for her the whole way through.

Once again the author managed to blend the old (historical) with the new (fantasy element) and pulled off a stunning setting fit for any lover of both genres.

My only regret is that Jane didn't have a bigger, stronger role in this installment. I really fell in love with her feisty strong willed character in the first book and I wanted more of her and Rochart. I didn't feel we got enough of their ending in the first book and was slightly disappointed that there wasn't more to their love story. And although there wasn't more to their story there was definitely an ending to it and for that I am grateful. In fact, I love how the whole story was told, how it ended and how it leaves it open for more adventures in the future.

Connolly did an amazing job creating something unique, dangerous, and utterly fun.

Awesome world, lackluster heroine
By Karissa Eckert
This is the second book in the Ironskin series by Connolly. There is an as yet untitled third book planned in this series which is scheduled for a fall 2014 release. This book was okay, I enjoy the world created here but did not enjoy the heroine.

The Fey are slowly taking over the city and a secret society called Copperhead is becoming more and more prominent. Helen (Jane’s sister) is deep in the middle of it all. Helen is one of The Hundred, the group of women who had their normal faces removed and replaced with Fey faces to become more beautiful. Her husband Alistair is one of the main members in Copperhead. When Jane contacts Helen in help returning women’s real faces back to them Helen is eager to help, especially since it sounds the the Fey are finally making a move to take over the city and it seems like they may try and use The Hundred to do so.

This was a decent book continuing the Ironskin story about Fey taking over the city. This book is from Jane's sister's (Helen's) point of view. It was a well done story and dealt with some interesting issues. But, unfortunately I just thought it was a bit boring. I didn't find Helen to be all that engaging of a character, and though I admire how she changed throughout the story, I just wasn't all that engaged with the story.

Helen is very into being beautiful and very selfish. She comes off as flighty and a bit self-centered. Even when she is trying to help she is mainly doing it to make herself look good, not because she really strongly believes something is right. This changes some as the book continues and she starts to take on some responsibility. I really didn’t enjoy her as a character at all and I was disappointed that Jane was in the story so little.

A main issue raised in this book is that of women being forced to comply to their husbands’ wishes. Many of The Hundred were forced into having their faces improved by their husbands. Some went through the face change to escape abusive husbands, or to win wealthy husbands. Much of this book talks about this and is focused on the theme of how women have to empower themselves if they want to escape from the tyranny of a patriarchal society. At times I felt like it got a bit preachy.

Another major issue is the prosecution of the dwarven people. Copperhead is a “humans only” society and they don’t care that the dwarven are also enemies of the Fey; they just prosecute all non-humans equally. Again, it gets a bit preachy about the importance of equality.

I do love this world that is threatened by Fey infestation. I love how the woman have to wear iron masks to protect themselves from Fey takeover. The secret society of Copperhead was also very well done.

There is a bit of romance here between Helen and a half-dwarven man named Rook. To be honest this romance felt-forced and was awkward. For one Helen is married, secondly Rook always seems more interested in inciting rebellion than anything else. They are more partners in a similar cause and then, bam, suddenly they are in love...it was weird.

The book ties up nicely and is very easy to read. There really isn’t anything left to resolve at the end of this book, so I am very curious to see what the third book will be about.

Overall there are some neat ideas in here and I enjoyed the world-building. I didn’t like Helen as a main character and missed Jane. The plot was interesting, but at times with all the social issues being addressed this got a bit boring and preachy. When I was finished I kind of just thought "Eh, well okay that's over with”. I liked Ironskin a lot better than this book, but if you read Ironskin and enjoyed it I would recommend reading this book to see how the open issues in Ironskin are tied up.

Nearly everyone has brief moments of exalting communion with his or her own divine Soul and its finest possibilities: This book shows how to make the most of those moments; how to recognize, develop, test, and follow through on intuitions; how to contact the source of inspiration and make its vitalizing power a continuous presence. One of the most poetic and beautiful sections of The Notebooks, it explores the paradoxical nature of the Overself--where our human and divine natures meet and mingle.

Inspiration and the Overself
By Laurie Conrad
As an artist, writer and musician, this volume of The Notebooks of Paul Brunton is one of my favorites. Here Brunton discusses true Intuition and how to distinguish it from false promptings from our own egos, i.e. how to bring intuition to its highest level. In this volume Brunton also covers Mystical Glimpses and how to prepare for them and encourage them, as well as how to retain them. Perhaps most useful are the paragraphs discussing factors that can block these treasured Mystical Glimpses. The final chapter of this volume is entitled "Glimpses and Permanent Illumination". In this section Brunton gives us the hope and the assurance that even brief mystical Glimpses one day can become an abiding state of being. As in his other volumes, Brunton uses the term "Overself", a term he himself coined, meaning our true Selves, i.e. the soul as opposed to the ego. At times, the term "Overself" in his writings could also be interpreted as the Divine Consciousness or God. As in his other volumes, Paul Brunton's writing is unpretentious and clear, easy to both read and understand. In my opinion, Brunton is one of the greatest spiritual Teachers of the last century - and we are very fortunate to have his published writings available to us. Personally, I would recommend all of Brunton's Notebooks to any serious spiritual seeker.

Essential Reading For Those on a Spiritual Journey
By John
This volume of the Notebooks of Paul Brunton is the most profound and meaninful of his works for those who are beginning or in the midst of their spiritual journey. Brunton condenses his lifelong spiritual quest into a description of the eternal part of ourselves which he terms the Overself. This work as well as the rest of the Notebooks are not part of any religion or cult and are very much in the tradition of the great men and women who have spent their lives in trying to access and understand the ineffable knowledge and experiences that constitute the non-material part of our existence. There is nothing of the 'occult' in these volumes. I believe Brunton took the time throughout his life to provide a legacy and pathway to the many individuals who intuit that there is more to life than the materialistic and ego-centered culture that surrounds us. Knowing of the existence of this work or having this book in your library may provide guidance in your life now or even years from now, when you are ready to try to understand what you are doing on this earth.

Review
For a counsellor, the book is a helpful resource in spelling out the implications for clients who may be affected directly by the disorder itself or by living with someone else affected by it. "Honouring the humanity of the people we care for" is a phrase I came across elsewhere, but which comes to mind now as I reflect on this book, which dignifies the reality of living with mental health conditions and shows the exemplary decency of those involved in writing this book. -- The Independent Practitioner There are many books about bipolar but few focus on the impact the condition has on relationships within the family. Cara Aiken fills this gap admirably with her latest publication. In addition to valuable information about the symptoms and treatment of bipolar she uncovers, through a series of intimate and revealing interviews, the sense of loss, frustration, grief and longing that splinters the feelings between people with the diagnosis and their partners, parents, siblings and children - as well as the joy and relief when (and if) the individual makes a recovery. -- Michel Syrett, Editor of Pendulum, the journal of MDF The BiPolar Organisation, UK This book is an engaging and enlightening account of the challenges of living with bipolar disorder. The author has been able to weave together stories, vignettes, and case reports that illustrate what it is like to have, or live with someone who has, a mood disorder. It is important to know that we can all learn from individuals that have the lived experience, and this book captures and illustrates their lives successfully. -- Peter C. Ashenden, President and CEO of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, USA

Family Experiences of Bipolar Disorder...
By Darlene Toole
This book really did not meet my expectations because it was written by a doctor from
England, so the language and terminology seemed strange. There were some good examples of
individuals who have Bipolar Disorder and how their family members deal with it.
Maybe psychologists from the U.S. could learn something from research studies being
done in England about this mysterious disorder.

A book filled with warmth and empathy - a joy to read
By Mookie
I bought this book because it has contributions from another author, Sandy Knox, who wrote with great empathy & understanding about life with Bi-Polar and from which I gained great solace. When I began reading this book, I actually wasn't expecting what I got at all. It is written with such love and joy that you feel embraced all the way through. I actually felt like the author knew me and that the love and warmth she feels for her family she holds for everyone. It was also reassuring to read how people from all walks of life and with all kinds of family circumstances cope with the illness that surrounds and affects them.

Manic-depression is a dibilitating illness which can wreak havoc on any family but this book is a huge help because it reassures both the sufferer and their family members that they are not alone, that they can find their own way to cope and that they can still enjoy loving, warm relationships.

Thank you for putting it all in perspective.

The Civil War: The Third Year Told

This is the third volume of the ground-breaking eyewitness narrative that has been called a "masterpiece."

Spanning the crucial months from January 1863 to March 1864, this third volume of The Library of America’s highly acclaimed four volume series presents an incomparable portrait of a nation at war with itself while illuminating the military and political events that brought the Union closer to victory and slavery closer to destruction. It brings together more than 140 contemporary letters, diary entries, speeches, articles, messages, and poems by more than eighty participants and observers, among them Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Robert E. Lee, Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, Mary Chesnut, Clement Vallandigham, Henry Adams, Charlotte Forten, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, and George Templeton Strong, as well as Union officers Robert Gould Shaw, Charles B. Haydon, and Henry Livermore Abbott; Confederate diarists Catherine Edmondston, Kate Stone, and Judith McGuire; and Alabama soldier Samuel Pickens, Iowa housewife Catharine Peirce, Kentucky preacher George Richard Browder, and Kansas clergyman Richard Cordley. The selections include vivid and haunting eyewitness narratives of some of the war’s most famous battles—Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Fort Wagner, Chickamauga, Chattanooga—as well as firsthand accounts of the merciless guerrilla war in Missouri and Kansas; the Richmond bread riot and the New York draft riots; the controversies surrounding the use of black soldiers and the Lincoln administration’s curtailment of civil liberties; and the struggles of civilians both black and white to survive increasingly harsh wartime conditions.

Each volume features a detailed chronology of events, biographical notes about the writers, textual and explanatory notes, and original hand-drawn endpaper maps by expert Civil War cartographer Earl McElfresh.

The Civil War: The Final Year Told by Those Who Lived It will be published in 2014.

"Extraordinary, imaginatively compiled, and beautifully edited... If there is a richer evocation of those terrible times, I have not seen it."
GEOFFREY C. WARD, co author of The Civil War and author of A First-Class Temperament

"A profound portrait of a nation in crisis... It will forever deepen the way you see this central chapter in our history. And while this is only the inaugural installment in the series, it does not seem the least bit rash to call this collage of testimony a masterpiece."
MALCOLM JONES, Newsweek

"[An] engaging historical narrative... Goes a long way toward answering questions that posterity has debated about the Civil War during the past 150 years."
DANIEL WALKER HOWE, Bookforum

Anyone who wants to look beyond the cold, raw statistics of the war will be rewarded with detailed descriptions and accounts that capture perfectly and literally "man-on-the-street" views of the conflict. More oft-repeated thanks to my high school history teacher Ms. Jeanne Lee for inspiring me to learn, read, and learn even more...

The Civil War: The Third Year
By Robin Friedman
The Library of America has been commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War by publishing individual volumes of primary source material for each of the four years of the conflict. The first two volumes covering 1861 and 1862 were published in their respective sesquicentenial years, The Civil War: The First Year Told by Those Who Lived It (Library of America #212),The Civil War: The Second Year Told By Those Who Lived It (Library of America). The newly-published third volume, "The Civil War: The Third Year Told by Those who Lived It" (2013) covers the eventful third year of 1863. The book's coverage in fact begins on January 20, 1863, with Union General Ambrose Burnside's ill-fated "mud march" at Fredericksburg, and it concludes on March 10, 1864, with Ulysses Grant's promotion to lieutenant general and commander of the Union armies. Brooks Simpson, Foundation Professor of History at Arizona State University selected the texts and edited the volume. Simpson has written extensively of the Civil War, including books about Grant and Sherman.

In both its texts and its editing, this is a lengthy, informative, and fascinating volume. The book includes 736 pages of first-hand accounts of the military, political, and social history of the events of 1863 presented chronologically. There are 149 separate entries, some short and some extensive, from approximately 80 sources. The authors include famous figures, including Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Grant, Sherman, Henry Adams, Joshua Chamberlain, Whitman, Melville, and more for the Union and Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Mary Chestnutt, Lafayette McClaws, and more for the Confederacy. The volume includes as well many entries from historically obscure figures, including soldiers on both sides of the line, diarists, ministers, and observers.

The selections likewise range from the famous to the obscure. Lincoln's iconic Gettysburg Address, for example, is familiar to all readers. Some of the entries by famous individuals may, however, be new to many readers. For example, the volume includes several letters by Union general Sherman, including a letter to William Swayne dated June 11, 1863, to Sherman's wife dated June 27, 1863, to Henry Halleck, dated September 17, 1863, and to Roswell Sawyer, dated January 31,1864, in which he offers hard-edged, candid observations on nature of war, of the secession and on the coming Reconstruction. These letters remain provocative and thoughtful. Among the best of the documents included in the volume by an unknown author is an article by one Lois Bryan Adams written on February 8, 1864, for the Detroit Advertiser and Tribune. Ms. Adams describes her brief meet-and-greet with the President at a public reception day in the Lincoln White House. Her article includes as well a detailed depiction of the streets of downtown Washington, D.C. The writings in this volume, familiar or obscure, are almost always perceptive and articulate, and a pleasure to read.

Military events in 1863 focused on three pivotal battles: Gettysburg from July 1 -- 3, Vicksburg, which fell to the Union on July 4, and Chatanooga from November 23 --25. Each of these battles and the events leading to and following them are described in several articles and from a variety of perspectives. For example, the descriptions of Gettysburg include the diary entries of Arthur Fremantle, a British officer who observed the battle from within the Confederacy's lines and who had access to its high command, a report by Joshua L. Chamberlain on his defense of Little Round Top, diary entries by Confederate soldier Samuel Pickens, and letters from a Union nurse, cordelia Hancock about her experiences in caring for the Gettysburg wounded. Other battles and campaigns, including Chancellorsville, Fort Wagner, Chickamauga,Mine Run, and others, famous and obscure receive coverage.

Political events discussed in the volume center upon the use of African American troops following the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. Frederick Douglass' speeches and writings play a prominent role in the book as do depictions of the heroism of African American soldiers at Fort Wagner, South Carolina, Port Hudson, Mississippi, and Olustee, Florida, among other places. For the Confederacy, the volume includes a January 2, 1864, memorandum by General Patrick Cleburne, signed by several other Confederate officers, recommending the emancipation and enlistment of African American soldiers as a way to boost the Confederacy's sagging military fortunes and to achieve independence. Civil rights and civil disobediance during the conflict, in both Union and Confederacy, also receive substantial discussion, including the prosecution of copperhead Clement Vallandingham, the New York City Draft Riots, and the Richmond bread riots. A long entry by Richard Cordley describes the sometimes overlooked conflict in Missouri and Kansas which included a bloody massacre in Lawrence, Kansas led by the infamous William Quantrill.

The book gains a great deal from Simpson's editorial apparatus. Short introductions to each entry help guide the reader through the many documents. Simpson's introduction to the volume places the events of 1863 in perspective in the context of the entire war. The book includes a dense, 15-page chronology of the 1863-- early 1864 time period covered by the volume which shows, among other things, the broad scope of the events of the year, some of which are not treated in the text. The volume concludes with informative endnotes and with short biographies of each of the individuals who wrote the texts included in the book.

There is a great deal to be learned from this volume and from the two earlier books in the series about American history and about the seminal part the Civil War played in it. The source material adds a great deal to the many narrative histories available about the War and furnishes almost limitless material for reflection and for further reading. I am looking forward to the final LOA volume in this series, scheduled to be published in 2014.

First hand view of the Civil War's third year
By Steven Peterson
This is an examination of the third year of the Civil War in the words of those who lived during this sanguinary time. The third year featured bloody battles--Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga--and two battles that severely harmed the Confederacy--Gettysburg and Vicksburg.

One senses the despair of people like Frederick Douglass, as he lashes out against President Lincoln on the subject of black soldiers (pages 431-434) and the frustration of troops like Thomas Dodge of General Burnside's ill-fated Mud March (as Dodge says [page 6]: "It seems that Mud is really King"). On the Mud March, it is poignant to read General George Meade's sense of pain for Burnside's failed maneuver. We read Lincoln's letter to General Hooker (pages 18-19), after having named Hooker as commander of the Army of the Potomac, in which he gently chides Hooker for his politicization, his naked ambition, and his statement that the government needed a dictator.

Gettysburg? We read General Williams' letter indicating his support for Meade's having been named to command the Army of the Potomac, after Lincoln accepted Hooker's resignation. One of the more interesting of the pieces are entries in the diary for July 1-4 made by English observer Arthur Fremantle. He noted General Longstreet's concern about Pickett's Charge--and the aftermath of that failed venture. Then, there is the correspondence between Robert E. Lee and President Jefferson Davis over Lee's offer to resign as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.

The last entry is a letter from General Sherman to General Grant, in which Sherman implored Grant to stay in the West, away from the politics of Washington DC.

Some additional features--a chronology of the year and some biographical notes.

All in all, a nice compendium for those who wish to experience the Civil War through the eyes and ears of those who lived it.

English lives in World War II
By Auntie Annie
I began reading Ruby Jackson with Churchill's Angels anxiously await this book which continues the story of the four girls (one set of unidentical twins and two friends) growing up in pre-World War II England. The first book followed the life of Daisy who learned to pilot a plane and was ferrying supplies around England, freeing male pilots for combat. This book followed Grace, the orphan, who after losing her sister and only relative, joined the Land Girls, young women who were sent out to farms to milk, plow or whatever needed doing. Grace was posted to two different farms: one owned by a titled Lady who drove her own tractor, one owned by a sullen farmer who suspected everyone of being a spy. Grace meets women and men from different strata of society, is entranced by a young medical student, and finally proposed to by her long time love.

Not as good as the first book
By M. E. Newell
Young Grace Paterson has decided to become a Land Girl in order to her part for the war effort. But life on a farm is harder than she expected and not matter what is does she seem to find herself on Lady Alice's bad side. But Grace is determined to make this work and do her part to help England win the war.
"Wave Me Goodbye" is the second book in the "Churchill Angels" series by Ruby Jackson and I have to say that I didn't like as much as the first book. I just had a hard time with the book because at times Grace seemed so weak and always letting others due for her. Part of me want to yell at Grace to be stronger at times. While I know I purchase the third book, I hope that it is better than "Wave Me Goodbye."

With colorful photographs and interactive examples, Bruce Goldstone introduces children to the ideas of something being possible, probable, or impossible. From School Library Journal
K-Gr 4–As he did in Great Estimations (Holt, 2006), Goldstone takes a mathematical concept and makes it easily understandable for children and great fun as well. Using a question/answer format, he explains possibility, impossibility, probability, improbability, and certainty. Each concept is accompanied by photographs that are not only sharp and clear, but that also employ colors that make the pictures really pop. Varying sizes and fonts add interest, and the subjects that Goldstone has chosen to illustrate the concepts have a great deal of child appeal. The pages featuring combinations have adorable Squidgy the Bear dressed in the 100 outfits made possible by his possessing 10 shirts and 10 pairs of pants. It's “bearly possible” to predict which outfit he will wear because of the 1 in 100 odds. This book will be a boon to teachers working with these concepts, and it will attract browsers as well. From Booklist
There’s a strong possibility that children will be intrigued by this flashy introduction to the math concept of probability. Sumptuous and delectable photos of a wide range of items, such as gum balls, colorful balloons, goldfish, flowers, parrots, and a teddy bear (with 100 outfits no less!), fill the pages and are used to demonstrate what constitutes possible, impossible, certain, probable, unlikely, and so forth. The concepts are put forth simply in a few sentences with questions directed at the reader. For example, alongside a photo of a child jumping into water is text that reads, “What will probably happen when this jumper hits the water?” This is a sterling example of how to make a potentially difficult and possibly off-putting topic easy to swallow. Children who have devoured this will not be prepared for Probability 101, nor will it help them win the lottery, but it is a fine, playful introduction and—as Goldstone suggests in the author’s note—it could help them articulate their ideas when discussing possibilities. Grades 1-4. --Randall Enos

It's like an inoculation against ignorance!
By Penny Thoughtful
My 7-year-old loves this book because it makes her think. I love it because it's teaching her the difference between something that is certain, something that is probable, something that is possible but not likely, and something that is impossible. When you think of all the problems in the world that are caused by people not understanding those distinctions, the importance of a book like this comes to light. And even my 3-year-old likes the illustrations. Highly recommended for children and grown-ups alike.
