Great Supplement

This book provides an in-depth and easy to understand explanation of all facets of criminal law testable on law school exams. The chapters devoted to specific crimes contain comprehensive overviews of the elements and triggers for each crime discussed, as well as step-by-step analysis frameworks and examples.

There are also chapters devoted entirely to mens rea, the voluntary act requirement, mistakes of fact and law, the "liability formula," relevant policy considerations, etc.

The author goes into great depth in clarifying terms and identifying factors that might shift the outcome of an analysis of liability.

This book does a great job of breaking down complicated concepts into easily-digestible units. I would recommend it to anyone who is studying criminal law and needs a good supplement.

Samuel Pillsbury's, How Criminal Law Works, provides what is so often lacking in other treatises and study guides: a conceptual framework to understand the structure, variety and logic of criminal law doctrine, not merely a description of case-by-case holdings. This conceptual framework is what sets Pillsbury's book apart and makes it the best guide available to students for mastering both the big picture as well as the details of American criminal law. It is also well-written, engaging, and even compelling at times. Students will especially benefit from the numerous hypothetical problems that Pillsbury succinctly but effectively works through in each chapter to illustrate the application and analysis of the basic criminal law doctrinal concepts, particularly in some of the more abstract and slippery areas of criminal law such as complicity and conspiracy. This book is a godsend to those students taking Criminal Law in their first semester of law school, but it will also be very helpful to all students taking Criminal Law regardless of their year or their law school. I cannot recommend it more highly.

About the Author
Jim Mansell was Emeritus Professor of Learning Disability at the Tizard Centre, University of Kent, and Adjunct Professor in the School of Social Work and Social Policy at La Trobe University, Melbourne. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours 2012. Watch out world Darynda Jones is taking over and death has never looked so hot!

If you have not picked up the first book Death and the Girl Next Door you are seriously missing out! This 3rd book is just well amazing and is defiantly my favorite! The twists in this story will throw you for a loop and you really have to take a moment to stop and think before you have that AH HA moment! Well at least I did anyway. I personally love a book that makes you think and boy I did not see a few things coming that surprised me. yes there is a little romance and a lot more action from the start of this book then the last ones. Oh and yes you will want to bring tissues because I know I cried a little reading this and was a little devastated till I fished the book to tell you the truth.

Death, Destruction, and the end of the world really sums up what this books is about and all hell breaks loose literately. No matter how far Lorelei runs away she can not escape her destiny or without someone trying to killer her either. If this person succeeds in killing her the world will end and it wont be pretty. Help will come from the most unlikely of places and she must do everything in her power to save the world and everyone she loves.

I don't want to go into too much detail because I want you to go out and read it for yourself. So now off you go read it you know you want to!

I give this a FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS...BIG ONES!! I was absolutely and utterly amazed and pleased with the final installment to the Darklight Series. This book was everything I hoped for and more. I couldn't believe how the story twisted from one reality to the next and almost back again, INCREDIBLE! I think I have an even bigger crush on Jared now then I did before reading this story. He is just...perfect. Him and Lorelei, Brooklyn, Cameron, and Casey aka Glitch, are some downright fun and epic characters that will no doubt end up being the ultimate best characters out there, especially in the YA world. I met some new characters and seen some twists that will leave your jaw hanging open, that left me completely stunned in the BEST way. I want to so bad, to say more about this book, but I just can't be that cruel and giveaway the story, so if you haven't picked this book up what are YOU waiting for? I honestly can say this book ROCKED and I can't believe this is the third and final book in this incredible series. I am dying to know though...what will Darynda Jones come up with next?

Josie Santomauro is a full-time writer living in Brisbane, Australia. Her son, Damian, was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at the age of five. In 2009 was awarded the Parent/Carer Award in recognition of outstanding achievement by Autism Queensland, Australia.

This book is a great inspiration.
I love the various stories.
Our son is hesitant to read much about his autism, but this book he will read.
I think this is intended to be a "pep talk" for young people like our son. For that reason alone, the book is worth purchasing.

These folks are indeed all stars in their worlds. I believe my son might be more high functioning so might have different expectations so before buying, consider the expectations for the autstic in your life. Where are they on the spectrum. I think disclosure would have been helpful.

I bought this book for my son's two-year birthday. He loves Zebras, and so I thought he would like this book. When I opened the book for the first time, I was a little concerned because there are many words. I didn't think it would hold his attention. But to my surprise he loved it. The reading involves dialogue from other animals, so you can make cute voices. That along with the many pictures in the book...my son enjoyed it. He even requests us to read it now..."zebra book".

My 7 year old son adores zebras so I found this to be a great book for him. The story is very cute as the characters try to determine how a zebra gets its stripes. It is also informational in explaining how all zebras have different stripe patterns.

Everything about this book is well integrated and thought out: The endpapers are decorated with baseball-card-style information on each of Niño's opponents, including phonetic spellings of their Spanish names. Viva La Lucha Libre!!

If there is any topic on the lips and minds of librarians, teachers, and other gatekeepers it is the state of multicultural literature for kids today. Seems a week can't go by without a new study or proposal to deal with the need for more books about kids of color being published today. Recently I discovered that while books for kids containing Latino characters are rare in and of themselves, imported children's books from Mexico are downright impossible to find. Most of the Spanish language books for kids you'll find are translations of American books or imports from Spain. It's what makes an author/artist like Yuyi Morales such a godsend. Not only are her books hilarious, cheeky, and beautiful all at once, but she brings a perspective that we simply do NOT see. Sure this book was originally published in America, but it has a take we can't get anywhere else. I've loved her books for years but Yuyi's latest, "Nino Wrestles the World"? My favorite. Nuff said.

Ladies and gentlemen, Senoras Y Senores, behold Nino, the greatest wrestler of our age. Sure, he may just look like a boy who put on a mask and stripped down to his underwear, but don't count him out. The biggest baddest contenders fall in his wake. Behold his defeat of the Guanajuato mummy or the terrifying La Llorona. Thrill to the fight between Nino and the Olmec Head or the mysterious Chamuco. Each and every one proves they are no match for Nino's talents. That is, until his little baby sisters wake up and it becomes clear who really is the champion wrestler in this family.

Now what I'm about to tell you is 100% true. For years I worked as a children's librarian in New York Public Library's main branch. Often we'd have class visits from kids all around the city (and from other countries as well). And more than once I was asked for books on the topic of Mexican wrestlers. I kid you not. Fun Fact: No nonfiction or fictional book (aside from the "Lucha Libre)]" series by Xavier Garza) exists for children on this topic. Zippo. Zero. Zilch. The oddest result of all of this is that over the years, as publishers ask where the gaps are in children's collections, the first thing that would pop into my brain over and over was "Mexican wrestlers". I don't think they bought it. In fact, "Nino Wrestles the World" is the very first book of its kind to touch on this topic in ANY aspect since I went on my recommendation spree. You want another book like this one? Good luck to you. Morales knew she had a good thing when she wrote this one up.

One of the current buzzwords ah-buzzing in my ear is the term "imaginative play". Have you run across this one? The long and the short of it is that the story is about a kid using their imagination in some fashion. "[[ASIN:0836220889 Calvin and Hobbes", say, would be the quintessential imaginative play comic strip. Because I have parents that look for these types of books I keep a running roster of titles going in my brain ("Hot, Hot Roti for Dada-ji", "Mighty Max", etc.). Add to the pile Nino himself. I love that the villains he wrestles aren't your standard famous Mexican wrestler names, but rather the supernatural creatures and critters that your average Mexican kid would be familiar with. There is a fine tradition of Mexican wrestlers wearing masks that represent these very characters, and there have even been B movies (like "Santo Vs. The Mummies of Guanajuato") that precede Nino's fantasies. Mummies and aliens and the devil himself all make for perfect easily defeated and outwitted foes. Little sisters are another matter entirely.

As I have no typography or design background I don't know how much I can say about this book without coming off as a doofus. I will say, however, that there were a lot of stylistic choices at work that I approved of. Take the sound effects as an example. They're not the ones you'd find on your average episode of "Batman". Rather than your standard "Bam"s and "Pow"s we have "BLOOP", "SLISH", "ZOK", and "PACHATAS" amongst others. Then there's the Spanish itself. Incorporated seamlessly into the English text, Morales has opted not to include a Glossary of terms at the end of the book. It's all about context, something that might bug me in another book but here struck me as appropriate considering the subject matter. That said, I was inordinately grateful for the pronunciation guides. As one of those kids who took French in high school because of her love for the rock opera "The Phantom of the Opera)", my familiarity with the Spanish language is fairly limited. Fortunately, most of the characters' names are intuitive and those that aren't (I'm looking at you La Llorona) are defined crisply and coherently in the endpapers.

As an artist, Morales has tackled various original artistic formats over the years. She's one of the few illustrators I know who has ever gotten away with using models ("My Abuelita" by Tony Johnston) while the paints (or were they pastels) of "Little Night" positively glowed on the pages. "Nino" is notable in part for replicating an advertising or poster-like style (design major everywhere, rejoice). The stencil-like faded images of the background contrast sharply with the characters, all rendered in acrylics, inks, digital effects, and even salt (?) which visually leap off the page. I like the in-jokes as well. For example, when Nino uses his puzzle to defeat Olmec Head, the image on the puzzle cover is from "Just a Minute!", also by Ms. Morales. There are, admittedly, a couple moments where it's hard to figure out what's going on. Nino's battle against El Chamuco involves scooters, LEGOs and popsicle sticks, but beyond that I'm not entirely certain what's taking place in the final "ZZZWAP" sequence. Fortunately it's so much fun I hardly care.

Then there's Nino. I mean look at that guy. Has any kid in his tighty whities ever looked half as confident as Nino does when staring you down with that smile? The key to the story, to some extent, is the fact that when Nino defeats a villain he does so using games. Whether it's marbles or puzzles or dolls, Nino's weapons are the weapons of childhood itself. Little wonder he's powerless in the presence of his baby sisters. The sisters, for their part, never change expression. They are coy. Little adorable angels/devils, there will be readers out there that more than sympathize with Nino's plight.

I took this book to Spain it was instantly embraced by my friends in Barcelona. Not only for the clever wordplay and great idea, but for the very art itself. There is something magnificently and universally appealing about "Nino". Whether it's the goofy plot, the eye-popping art, or the fact that there is NOTHING on your bookstore and libraries shelves like this right now, this one-of-a-kind little number is going to lure in boys and girls alike. You've never seen anything like it, but after reading it you'll beg for more of the same.

John Costantine: Hellblazer Vol. 5: Dangerous Habits (new edition)

This volume collects issues #34 to #46 (the first six issues are written by Jamie Delano and mark the end of his run on Hellblazer and the remaining six are penned by Garth Ennis).
I had build a considerable degre of expectation regarding this volume solely fueled by Ennis` "Dangerous Habits" arc, as I had heard very mixed opinions regarding the Jamie Delano penned issues included in this collection. As it turned out, the Delano issues were mostly excellent and stand proudly against Ennis' arc.

Issues #34 to #36 ("The Boogeyman", "Dead-Boy's Heart" and "The Undiscovered Country") are all part of the same sequencial story which finds Constantine drowned in booze and self-pity. His self-loathing and search for hope and meaning leads him straight to his friends Marj and Mercury (who first appear in "The Fear Machine", a story arc I have not yet read). A deep, meaningfull and touching voyage to Constantine's subconscious and fears ensues. The first two issues are pretty good and even if the third part is less stellar, I would still give the whole story a solid 7. The artwork on all three issues is assured by Sean Phillips who adds great visual gravitas to Delano's story.

Issues #37 to #38 ("Man's Work" and "Boy's Games"), also by Delano, relate a rather shocking and horrific story that dwelves deep into the cruely of the human heart. Constantine is barely present on this story, focusing more on Mercury. This rather good story is brilliantly complemented by Steve Pugh's art. I'll rate it 8.0.

Issues #39 and #40 ("The Hanged Man" and "The Magus"), the last two issues in Jamie Delano's run on Hellblazer, are excellent. We learn a secret about John Constantine's past that is so terrible that he himself had supressed. The first part of this story (issue#39 - "The Hanged Man") is drawn by Steve Pugh and it's excellent finale (issue #40 "The Magus") is by Dave Mckean, an artist with a style equally beautifull and surreal that fits perfectly into the tale it illustrates. Delano's final issue closes his "Hellblazer" work in a great way and whose references to his previous stories gives a very cohesive feel to his run. I'd give a 9.

Issues #41 to #46 mark the beggining of Garth Ennis' run on "Hellblazer" with his 6 issues long arc "Dangerous Habits". This arc is considered by many to be not only the best "Hellblazer" arc ever written but also Ellis' best work. Altough I tough it was very good, I believe the high expectations I had for this story somewhat diminuished my enjoyment of it. For some reason it did not feel as deep or "hellish" as Delano's best stories, but it was still very good. I was also a bit dissapointed with the artwork (the penciling is done by William Simpson), mostly the clouring, which as somewhat insipid and unspectacular considering it's high-stakes storyline. Of course the story is well known to everybody remotely interested in "Hellblazer", so I will not dwell much on it. It's easily worthy of a 9, but short of a 10.

This collection is yet another very strong volume in a series that keeps on improving thus far. I will miss Jamie Delano's writing but if the "Dangerous Habits" arc is a good indicator of Ellis' work on Hellblazer then I think I may be in for quite a treat.

Digital Comic Review for Kindle Fire & iPad for Hellblazer Vol. 5

If you like Hellblazer, Jamie Delano, and Garth Ennis you should like this collection. It is a great value for the price at 352 pages for $11.39 at the time of my purchase.

This is a review for the Amazon digital Kindle edition of the collection. This is the first digital comic that I have purchased through Amazon, so I do not know if these issues are also reflected in previous offerings of any other digital comics.

1. Unable to pinch to zoom, so you are forced to use the double tap panels individually throughout the comic. These can be clunky and non-intuitive in addition to cutting up the page in strange ways when the panels are not standard shapes, or bordered.

2. Unable to tilt to display double page spreads in a widescreen view. Tilting to view does not function.

Kindle Fire - These are the only real issues for reading on this platform. The panel double tap to zoom can help those with bad eyesight.

iPad through the Kindle APP - The formatting is less than optimal for this platform. There is at least 1/2 inch on the right and left side of the pages. This is a shame, as if this was not the case the need to zoom at all would be limited to the double page spreads.

Overall the image scans are crisp on both platforms.

The biggest problems with this digital comic book is the lack of option to switch from a double-tap zoom to a pinch zoom, and the inability to turn either platform to widescreen to view double page spreads. The wasted screen space on the sides of the iPad version is pretty unforgivable.

I really hope future offerings of the DC/Vertigo digital comics offered through Amazon implement the options I mentioned are lacking in this one. It would be a shame if they don't use the technology their disposal to provide the best possible reading experience for their customers.

Really takes off in the second half.

Dangerous Habits' is reputed to be the defining arc for Hellblazer, and I can see why. The six issues of that arc were some hilarious stuff. However, Those issues are only half the content of this collection, and the first half doesn't measure up.

Jamie Delano's run has a lot of character moments defining John Constantine and his friends, but it's the same character beats we've seen time and time again. John does nasty things for the greater good, his friends pay the price, he goes emo for more issues than I care about. Half his plots rely on abstract prose to describe what's going on in the story, half of which is made redundant by the artwork.

Ennis, though, understands what I want of a Hellblazer story. There's tons of black humor, no pointless exposition, and above all, John Constantine EARNS the title of 'clever bastard'. This arc renews my faith in the series going forward.

Everything that one would expect, and good for all ages

If your eye was caught by the title and cover photo, you won't be disappointed in the contents of the book. Full of beautiful pictures and fun stories, the book is even done in a soothing color scheme that makes it live up to its promise all the more, and it is hard not to notice some of the characteristics of one's own relatives in the stern chicken mother looking over her Rottweiler puppies, or the calm Labrador Retriever father trying to ignore the antics of his duckling. With so many individual stories, chances are, you'll find something that looks a lot like your family here...

One nice thing is that most of the animals will be familiar (and appealing) to younger children, so it is an easy book to share with kids of all ages. I have found that this is not so much the case with some books of this type, where the pairings can seem sort of bizarre, and it is especially nice given the fact that children will obviously connect with the subject matter of families. There is also a subtle message of inclusion and acceptance in the book that I think is good for kids to hear, and relevant to the times we live in.

I will definitely be gifting some copies of this book this year.

A solid shot of warm fuzzies!

Come on, how can you not love this book? Tales of animals taking care of one another, even when paired in unlikely mixes? Good stuff.

As the owner a German Shepherd, I particularly loved the story of the Shepherd and her adopted kittens.

Made my family happy

My wife brought this amazing book home from the library to read to our 5 year old. The stories collected here are well written and inspiring true accounts of animals that have taken the task of mothering orphaned animals from other species.

I have enjoyed reading these incredible stories for myself as well as for my daughter, who clings to every word even though there is only one picture per story.

It's rare to find something like this that provides enjoyment for everyone in the family. I highly recommend this amazingly entertaining and educational book to any reader.
