About the Author
Teri Clark's interest in the new and different has led to a successful online writing career collaborating on nearly 100 books as an editor, researcher, ghostwriter and author. Easy to understand, straightforward primer

This is my first book on the subject. I enjoyed each chapter, soaking in the information which was relatively easy to understand and clearly explained. Not too many tables were used which is a good thing since I think they're a pain to read on a KFHD what with all the swiping the screen left and right. I had done some prior research on the topic online where this book was recommended in a blog. It gave me some more starting guidelines and areas to further research but I feel confident to start looking for the right people to connect with in pursuit of this type of investment.

As Alison's Automotive Repair Manual opens, her main occupation is mourning her husband, who died in an accident two years ago. Her sister, her friends, and her former boss at the community college have all grown weary of her grief, and beg her to move on. But Alison is paralyzed, maybe partially because she wasn't all that crazy about her husband in the first place. One day she discovers a disintegrating 1976 Corvette in her sister's garage and finally thinks of something she'd like to do: repair the Vette. Alison knows nothing about cars, but pegs away at her project anyhow, knowing all the while that "the whole thing was folly." Meanwhile, we follow her healing, her new love for a munitions expert named Max, her sister's quest to get pregnant, and the (literal) exposure of the town's secret history. While Alison is an appealingly complex character, forever stumbling into gaffes, the book is a little too neat, with its themes, goals, and love interests laid out tidily in the first 40 pages. Automotive repair doubles as grief therapy in Barkley's quirky, emotionally resonant third novel (after Money, Love) set in a small town in West Virginia, where a newly widowed young woman tries to delay putting her life back together. Alison Durst is the witty, 30-ish protagonist who's become a semipermanent guest of her sister Sarah and brother-in-law Bill ever since her husband died in an accident. She's already spent two years in mourning, and in spite of Sarah and Bill's pleas that she get on with it, Alison makes yet another bid to prolong her suspended state: she's going to rebuild her brother-in-law's broken-down Corvette, and then she'll leave. Of course, she knows nothing about cars. Sparks really start to fly, however, when Max Kesler, the owner of a one-man munitions company, comes to help her with the project. Their initial dates are as explosive as they are funny, with Alison accompanying Max while he blows up a silo and then scopes out the hotel that may be his next target. Barkley spends a bit too much time on Max's father, a compulsive liar whose habit is beginning to interfere with Max's relationship with Alison. This subplot slows the romantic momentum, but the combination of Barkley's understated comic style and well-calibrated dialogue is more than enough to overcome the misstep. The icing on the cake is the author's touching portrayal of smalltown life in West Virginia.

Barkley is back (after Money, Love), and he has a winner. Almost two years after her husband's accidental death, Alison Durst's life is at a standstill. Her house is empty, her teaching job is on hold, and she's still living with her sister and brother-in-law in their small West Virginia town. A moldering 1976 Corvette in the garage seems to be the way out of this "rest stop." Armed with the Haynes Automotive Repair Manual (quoted between book chapters), Alison endeavors to restore the car, which results in life-changing implications for all around her. With car repair as metaphor, we learn much about forgiveness and hope; the differences among facts, lies, and truth; and the grand importance of how and with whom our life journeys are made. Barkley steers this one straight into our hearts. Highly recommended for most fiction collections.

Magnificent

I've been reading Barkley's work for several years, and this novel shines. He does an admirable job of portraying a woman widowed in her thirties, inspects grief without oversentimentalizing, and even manages to weave a great deal of humor into a book that travels through the murkiness of memory and loss.
Set in a small West Virginia town, the novel brings you exactly the kinds of Southern characters you'd hope for: quirky, endearing, and full of the kinds of eccentricities that make you want to plunk yourself down in the middle of the story to talk to them for a while.
Buy it. Read it. You won't be sorry.

Has some very good moments

I enjoyed reading this book. It is the story of Alison, wa woman in her thirties who is widowed when her husband dies in an accident. Like some woman in this situation, Alison romanticizes her relationship with Marty to the point that she is unable to get on with her life in any concrete way. After two years of wallowing in misery, she begins to rebuild a totally rundown 1976 Corvette.
THe novel is cleverly written. Each chapter heading is a section of an automotive repair manual, that gives you a brief description of what Alison is going to learn in the ensuing chapter.
What I liked best about this novel was the complexity of the characters that we meet. There are no wasted characters. Everyone we meet is well texted, they are complete, and they have strengths and weaknesses, and some are not all that likeable. Most of the dialogue is good- to the point, few embelishments, and very realistic. You capture a nice picture of small town America. I was not always happy with the interior narrative of Alison however. Sometimes I felt the narrator was a little too detached, and I guess this supposed to be part of Alison's character, but it separated me a little too much from Alison, and sometimes I really didn't like her character. This is always a big literary sticking point with me- how is the reader supposed to feel about the hero? Are we supposed to like them, or is that too pat?
I also didn't see the pattern of Alison's growth very clearly. I don't like things spelled out, but I think the reader needed to make too many leaps and guesses as to how Alison's character developed throughout the novel. I guess I was not convinced of any real transformation.
But, that aside, I think this is a novel that deserves to be read, and discussed, and reread.

Depth Behind the Humor

With it's wise-cracking dialogue and oddball characters, this book explores serious themes of loss (accidental and intentional), love and death, and truth. Alison Durst, a former badgirl turned community college history teacher, still mourns the accidental death of her husband Marty after more than a year, and Sarah, her married (but not comfortably so, as she and her husband Bill struggle to get pregnant), encourages her to get on with her life. She meets Max, but of course pushes him away at first as he competes with the ghost of Marty. She is drawn to him--he, the munitions expert, adept at destroying things, buildings, silos, relationships--and at the same time sets about trying to make things right. Against a background that at first seems silly--the unifying thread is Alison's restoration of a hopeless 1976 Corvette--this book does a masterful job of portraying, and resolving, Alison's conflicts.

Are we alone in the universe, or is life a universal phenomenon? For fifty years, astronomers in SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) have scanned the universe for intelligent signals, but with no success. In this intriguing book, Edward Ashpole explains the probable reasons for this and discusses other avenues of investigation more in line with the nature of science and technology.

The author examines the problems inherent in scanning the universe for radio or optical signals from an alien intelligence. These include the difficulty of trying to communicate with another species possessing a completely unknown form of technology and the vast distances that alien communications would have to travel to reach us.

This leads Ashpole to other ways of finding evidence for extraterrestrial life, given that advanced civilizations would probably use artificial intelligence for interstellar travel. Our scientists now know how to detect the presence of life on a planet by observing its spectral lines, so more advanced alien researchers would have had ample time (about two billion years) to investigate these “signatures of life” coming from Earth. Hence, the author argues, alien space probes could exist within our own solar system; there might be evidence on the erosion-free Moon or on another moon or planet. In fact, a few scientists have scanned NASA's best photography, looking for evidence of such “alien archaeology.”

In a final chapter, the author urges an open-minded attitude on the part of scientists to all credible sources of information, along with the use of the scientific method to test various hypotheses and weed out the fantasy factor, which so often interferes with serious attempts to find hard evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Exponential Growth MUST End

The author seems to assume that technology, once initiated in a civilization, must continue to grow without end. This is not a good assumption; all growth eventually ends. So the assumption that alien civilizations must have created interstellar travel is a very weak one.

The talk of theology and ET is nonsense. Theology is the study of "gods". We have as much evidence for bigfoot, alien abduction, and telepathy as we do for "god", yet the author does nothing to discredit the concept of his imaginary friend who established all of the fundamental constants at exactly the right value. Future physics may find that the fundamental constants are related by certain constraints, as Maxwell's equations relate the speed of light to the electric and magnetic susceptibility of free space.

The Dyson sphere is a nogo. Much more attainable is something like ring world. In fact, there could be multiple ring worlds around a single star with different orbital distances and orbital planes so that they do not block each other's access to the energy source. But a sphere enclosing a star is not likely.

Author's relentless criticism of radio SETI fails to recognize work in biochemistry of the origins of life and other scientific work underway at SETI Institute, nor does he mention that installations like the Allen Telescope Array have astronomy uses beyond radio SETI.

So I am not thrilled with this book, though it is worth reading. It has some interesting ideas.

A Deep Look into Our Vast Nature

Signatures of Life attempts to answer the myriad questions that arise from contemplating our unique existence in the universe. Many of these are so fundamental that practically everyone will possess them sometime in his or her life. However, author, Ashpole raises even deeper concerns--those that motivate us to question reality. He truly concerns himself about the portability of life. Has it spread out through the cosmos? Have we come into the picture because life is seeded here from elsewhere? He raises these and other similar questions right from the first paragraph of the first chapter. Then, without stopping, he continues to probe for answers, further stimulating the reader's thoughts along the way. His quest is multi-layered, encompassing many common areas that most of us take for granted. Still, he manages to see things that most of us overlook. He is looking back at the Einstein Clock in Berne, waiting for the light from scientific enlightenment to reach him. Does he see this world percolating with possibilities as static or can he find new avenues to explore that are so dynamic that they can lead us into a wonderland of discovery?

Edward Ashpole is taking that bold step to look deeply into our vast nature. And, in so doing, he paves the way with glistening cobblestones that illuminate our curiosity by his indelible style that persists to turn over every stone, to uncover the minutest detail that will one day show us who we really are. He takes a heroic step in the direction of understanding by the endorsement of his vehement prose.

Ashpole has a powerful message. It is told from a substantial platform, the number of facets is mind-boggling. What kind of individual is he who looks so deeply and ardently into our very nature? The author is to be applauded if, for anything, just to address these important concerns that most of us wish someone would examine.

About the Author
Ann Futterman Collier is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with many years experience of working with textile arts and therapy. She is an Assistant Professor at Northern Arizona University, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in abnormal psychology, counseling techniques, health psychology, and art therapy theory; she also conducts research on how art-making can be used to promote well-being and mood repair. Ann resides in Flagstaff, Arizona.

FANTASTIC!

This book is long overdue. So many books have been about the benefits of fiber arts with an emphasis on knitting or crochet without thinking about the fact that many fiber artists, like me, knit, crochet, weave, quilt and also have participated in art instillations with art quilts. I am a fifth generation quilter. I also have a history of sexual assault as a child and domestic violence as an adult. I've had nearly fifteen to twenty years individual and group therapy as well as participated in alternative therapies, such as yoga, qi gong, meditation, journaling, exercising and EMDR. I have found that working with fiber arts helped me greatly between counseling appointments. Fiber arts helped to alleviate my anxiety, build my self confidence in my abilities as I learned new techniques and helped me to come up with creative and productive solutions to any issues I experienced. Still, I have asked myself often have I done all that I can do to help myself. I was so pleased to find that I had done many of the recommendations Ann Futterman Collier suggested in her book. I also read many of the books featured in the references section, but I was also pleased to find some articles and books I didn't know about. I can't wait to check them out. I felt camaraderie with the women profiled within the book. It is good to know that there are others out there who share my enthusiasm for fiber arts. If you work with fiber arts, you will love this book. If you have a history of trauma, you will find this book and the joy of fiber arts to be a God send. I highly recommend it!

Solid Starting Point

The author is a clinically qualified psychoanalyslist, clinician, and also a lover of the fiber arts. The premise is the integration of fiber arts therapy based on Jugian archetypes and moving to positive self perception through art expression. It does not dwell on expressing the dark side of past trauma, but finding strong archetypes, to redefine and claim a future. Excellent notations make it easy to refer out to source material and find additional references. I only wish I had bought the hard copy, so it could always be on my shelf. Recommend, a definite buy- IN HARD COPY! Really enjoyed it.

Awesome!

Annie is an excellent and engaging writer who has obvious and extensive experience with her subject. She explores the creative process and its therapeutic role with women in a very readable and informative book. I enjoyed her exploration of the topic of creative expression through textile and other artistic media and how applicable this is even for someone with limited experience in psychology. The research is practical and interesting for anyone to understand the role of a creative process in coping with our everyday lives as women as well as with more significant negative experiences. Annie's book is an aid to anyone seeking guidance in this area to help heal and enrich the lives of patients, clients or themselves.
