Liam is a very talented boy. He can do lots of neat things, like tricks, tumbles and freaky faces. One day, Liam decided to impress his friend Sarah with a super-duper somersault on the couch. Sara said: 'So?'

In Liam Knows What to do When Kids Act Snitty, lovable Liam finds out why his amazing feats of greatness are sometimes met with snide or snitty responses. Not what or how I teach my kids.
By S. Lipson
I was thinking this was going to be a cute book (based on the charming stick figure cover illustration). I also hoped it would be an insightful book that I might learn some clever coping mechanisms for my kids. I did find the drawings kind of cute, until the bragging, self centered, egotistical Liam stuck his tongue out at a friend (and advised the reader to cope by thinking "whatever" about the "snitty" child) who didn't worship him. The books' message quickly proved purposeful only to guide a discussion with my children about all the wrong things Liam had done and how he could have managed himself and his interaction with other kids in a more mutually kind and productive manner. This book was completely opposite of what I was expecting. Honestly, I'm surprised anyone thinks this book teaches good values or effective coping mechanisms. My kids are almost 8 and just turned 9 and when I finished the book my older son looked at me with a markedly puzzled look and was at first speechless. I asked him if he thought it was a good book and if he felt it taught helpful things. He answered, "No and no." I know "negative reviews" usually get poor or no helpful votes, but I would really stress checking this one out of the library before spending one cent on it.

Cute for younger kids
By Liat2768
This is a good book for a child with social challenges who is still trying to figure out the how's and why's of other children's behavior. The language and illustrations are fairly basic and targeted more to kids in the 3-6 year age. My 8yo thought the illustrations were cute but did not get that much out of the book. The best message in this book, I thought, was to refrain from being snitty yourself.

Wonderful idea, but not well executed
By Jeddy 3
I love the idea behind this book -- basically, a self-help book for the very young that tells them specifically how to handle snide or rejecting behavior from other kids. But I think it fails to live up to its promise. It's flawed in a few specific ways:

1. The illustrations are TOO simple. I'm a big fan of simple illustrations, but I think these go too far, to the point where young kids will have a hard time identifying with the characters in the book because they barely look human.

2. The text is disjointed. The basic message is good -- when kids are mean or unappreciative, shrug your shoulders and figure they haven't yet learned how to be polite -- but it's delivered in a somewhat confusing way. It's not clear what Liam (the young protagonist) is thinking vs what the author is stating. And after Liam learns to deal with dismissive behavior from his peers, there's a confusing coda of sorts in which Liam writes a whole page of his journal without help and gets an award for it. He doesn't think he did anything special, but he accepts the award politely. I think this was meant to tell readers, "Others should be polite to you, even if they think you didn't do anything special; and you should be polite when you get praise you think is undeserved." But I had to think about it quite a bit before I realized that, and I don't think there's too much hope that, say, a 5-year-old will get it.

3. Finally, I don't think "snitty" was a good choice of word to describe children who say "so?" when you show them something you think is impressive. Not only does it sound an awful like another word I wouldn't want my kids to say, but it's not a word I've ever heard used even by an adult, let alone a child. I think most kids refer to this type of behavior as "mean."

I hate to give this worthy project a bad review -- especially one that's probably longer than the text of the book itself! -- but it just doesn't work. I hope someone revisits this simple and important idea soon and nails the details.
