About the Author
Bertrand Maury is Professor of Mathematics at the Université Paris-Sud, Orsay (France). He is also adjunct Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique, Docent Professor at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), and junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France. His domains of interest extend from Computational Fluid Dynamics and Numerical Analysis, to modeling in life sciences and Optimal Transportation.

SARAH SCHLESINGER is the author of The Garden Variety Cookbook and the co-author of The Low-Cholesterol Olive Oil Cookbook. She has spent the last ten years studying lower-ft, higher fiber food preparations. Schlesinger is a member of the faculty of the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, and divides her time among Baltimore, Maryland, Lewis, Delaware, and New York City.

The best fat free cookbook available!

I have a shelf full of low fat and fat free cookbooks, but this is the one I turn to time and again. It is absolutely the best.
The author began cooking without fat in order to accomodate the needs of her husband, who suffered from heart disease. She was a busy working mom with a career and a family to feed --- she wasn't a trained chef and couldn't spend all day in the kitchen. The recipes reflect that --- they are simple, tasty, practical and fast, featuring ingredients that available in most grocery stores. The book also contains a lot of information to help make the transition to fat free cooking simple and painless.
If I could have only one fat free cookbook, no question, this would be the one I'd choose.

Good for Ornish followers or lacto-ovo vegetarians.

In small leters in the introduction, the author explains this collection was developed for her husband who suffered from heart disease. They follow the Ornish program for heart reversal, which is basically low-fat, lacto-ovarian fare. The heart disease people, vegetarians, or those after better health/weight loss in general will appreciate this effort but those who do not know what "Ornish" means or those who skip the preface will be surprised that it's vegetarian and "no meat." Those wishing "meat-y" yet low-fat might be better off with one of Sue Spitler or Sandra Woodruff's books.
There is no space/some small space in the margins for notes although there is nutritional info. There are some vegan or vegan-friendly variations, but you have to hunt and pick. It's easier to adapt to L/O than vegan -- it's usually right there in the variation (ex: "use chicken broth or vegetable broth").
There weren't any overly exotic ingredients to me but the introduction does go over the ingredients used and explains what they are. That would be useful for cooking novices.
Some of the combinations are a little odd. Sometimes this works great and it's refreshing, other times it leaves me short of expectations. There is however, a consistancy of style across the recipes, and it's not bad if you want to be adventurous. I'd consider this more a "supplemental" cookbook rather than a "hardcore mainstay" one in my cookbook collection.
Overall, it's a nice collection, but not necessarily my favorite one when I was l/o and now that I am vegan I rarely use it. I didn't think it was so great that I wanted the other cookbooks she wrote later but who knows? Maybe those improved.

Creativity, ease, and tastiness!

Sarah Schlesinger has become my new favorite cookbook author. She suggests combinations that are remarkably creative, tasty, and EASY! Low fat and healthy is a secondary as far as I'm concerned. Try her other cookbooks, too. (As for other commentators who have suggested that her cookbooks fall short of the 500 promised: I really admire her cooking philosophy, that small variations create whole new gastronomical experiences! Sarah Schlesinger has cooking in her bones, and her cookbooks are the closest I have seen to a transcription of that kind of intuition.)

Richard Hanks, M. About the Author
Sophie Levitt is a specialist physiotherapist and tutor in developmental paediatrics and neurology. Her career has encompassed high profile therapy posts in London. She currently lectures and consults to a variety of professionals involved in the field of cerebral palsy, both in the UK and overseas.

The fifth edition of Sophie Levitt's book "Treatment of Cerebral Palsy and Motor Delay" belongs on the book shelves of every Cerebral Palsy Treatment Centre, or Child Development Centre. Ms. Levitt has created a book which incorporates both solid treatment suggestions and current principles of family centered care, cultural sensitivity and close inter-professional collaboration. Throughout the book there is emphasis on respect for the goals and priorities of the family and the child with CP, and the importance of blending therapy with play. The child is not seen as a passive recipient of treatment, but an active participant.

This book includes an up to date chapter on evidence based practice, which can assist the clinician in the evaluation of research studies and the development of research protocols. A practical approach to assessment describes observational assessment as well as many standardized assessment tools, their specific purpose, and application in the development of treatment plans.

But it is the wealth of specific treatment suggestions and activities based on Ms. Levitt's extensive experience and her collaboration with expert clinicians from around the world which sets this book apart. Activities which are organized according to the starting positions and motor development of the child are well described. There is also information on how to choose and employ equipment, and on how to manage deformity.

An engaging blend of literary criticism and biography, this ambitious work by literature professor and Moore scholar Leavell (Marianne Moore and the Visual Arts: Prismatic Color) challenges the persistent image of the modernist poet as a repressed and withdrawn spinster. From Moore's birth in Missouri in 1887, the book follows her lively intellectual development and years of unpublished obscurity, up until 1915, when she began to find outlets for her work. Her dense, cryptic, and complicated poems attracted the attention of avant-garde writers like T.S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, and H.D. Torn between her closeness to her mother (with whom she lived all her life) and her desire to achieve literary celebrity, Moore went on to work at The Dial in the late 1920s and became a fixture of literary society. She toiled away for years as a poet's poet with a scant popular readership, eventually rising to national prominence when her Collected Poems swept the literary prizes in 1952, establishing Moore as a doyenne of letters until her death 20 years later. Another disfunctional American family makes good. Marianne Moore's struggle with acceptance and independence.

This would make a great movie. Here is the story of one of America's great poets of the 20th century, as told by a researcher granted extraordinary access to the papers of Miss Moore and others. Marianne never knew or learned much about her father. Instead, she lived frugally with her lesbian mother in a tiny apartment for much of her life. Her mother, Mary, called Marianne "he," and other terms the reader will discover. Her mother became both her greatest asset as well as her greatest critic and life detractor. It was only after Mary's death that Marianne came out of her shell to enjoy life more fully.

Only a few of Ms. Moore's poems are included in this definitive work, and even then only portions. Most of those written during the early part of her career are difficult to understand. The biographer skillfully explains what can be explained.

If you are into poetry, this is the book for you. If you are into unusual biographies, this is definately the book for you. Chances are you'll end up being grateful for the life you are now living.

A fascinating biography.

Leavell's account of the life and work of Marianne Moore raised some objections that it was unfair to Moore's mother. The Moore family dynamics were certainly off. But Leavell adds to the case that Moore was one of our most significant American poets.

Moore wrote without regard to labels. She was a Modernist who used a precise syllabic form and rhymes. She was a defender of the underdog, an early white champion of civil rights and of black artists and athletes who also voted Republican and defended LBJ's continuing the Vietnam War, the latter mainly so as not to abandon the South Vietnamese. She wrote "advertising" verse and patriotic poems during WWII. She was raised by lesbians and then denigrated by second wave feminists.

Her poetry must be read and dealt with if you care about American poetry. Her carefully controlled poems were often described as emotionless and overly intellectual. In truth, she was able to contain deep emotion and thought in precise verse, a skill and aesthetic often not practiced or appreciated since the Confessionals came along.

A fascinating biography. No there are no fireworks or is there physical violence. But there is emotional violence and the heroic strength of a small woman with a large vision and poetic craft.

ENIGMATIC POET PREVAILS

Moore's unusual, personal life story is told against the background of her developing work. She had many interesting, literary friends and business associates, not to mention MOTHER and BROTHER. I kept expecting and looking forward to, more emphasis on the work, described as difficult to understand, and cerebral. Overall, the book was a great success, just not quite as complete as I would have liked, as Brett Miller's Elizabeth Bishop felt complete in meshing together her life and work.

Geboren am 08.02.1795 in Lovas-Berény bei Pest, gestorben am 05.09.1858 in Baden bei Wien. Saphir (eigentlich Moses Saphir) wurde als Sohn eines Kaufmanns in Pest geboren. Er studierte jüdische Theologie in Prag und arbeitete dann im väterlichen Geschäft. Nach seinem Studium der klassischen Philologie in Pest war er im Wien Kritiker an Bäerles "Theaterzeitung". Von 1826 bis 1829 war er in Berlin Schriftleiter der "Berliner Schnellpost", des "Berliner Courier" und des "Berliner Theateralmanach auf das Jahr 1828". Saphir machte sich in Berlin unbeliebt und kam in Festungshaft. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Paris war er Hoftheaterintendanzrat in München und lebte seit 1834 in Wien. Dort gründete er 1837 die satyrische Zeitschrift "Der Humorist".

Excellent introduction to how global finance works.

Excellent introduction to how global finance works. Goes through all the different types of finance professionals, their culture, how they do their jobs, then delves into carbon markets and other cool corners of the financial world. As an outsider, I learned more from this book about finance than any other book to date. Even if you're not into the activist portions of the book, read it for the descriptions of how the financial world really operates.

Must read for practical activists

This is required reading if you want to understand the market forces driving many issues activists care about. Understanding why some efforts are backed by the global financial community (such as Tar Sands) is essential to being able to address the issue. Without this understanding, any activism is likely to greatly miss the mark or be less effective than it could have been.

Scott brings a well-researched and authoritative behind-the-scenes look at how Wall Street and The City decide when an investment is worthwhile and how this decision ends up affecting the larger world. He also has many suggestions as to how to bend the rules of global finance towards more socially responsible ends, all of this from the perspective of someone who has spent time as both an investment banker and an activist.

At least one person in your activist organization must read this book!

How a financial system that works better for people can be ours, if we want it

“The Heretic’s Guide to Global Finance” by Brett Scott empowers activists by breaking down the complexities of the financial system and showing us how meaningful change is possible. Mr. Scott is an anthropologist, a student of the famed economist Ha-Joon Chang, and a financial activist who shares the deep knowledge and insights gained while working hands-on as a trader in London and the alternative finance community. This fascinating, useful and timely book will interest everyone who believes in a financial system that works better for people can be ours, if we want it.

The book is divided into three sections. “Exploring” helps readers gain financial literacy by introducing us to the terminology, institutions and practices that makes the financial system tick. Sharing his experiences as a financial trader, Mr. Scott writes in an interesting, relatable and witty manner. Anecdotes are used to more memorably illustrate key points; for example, the story of Mitt Romney and Bain Capital helps us understand how private equity firms profit from the breakup of profitable companies. One of the key takeaways is that everyone participates in the financial system; and therefore, the people collectively have the power to change the system if we can learn how to apply pressure in just the right way.

“Jamming” discusses the valuable social and info tech networks that help makes the everyday financial world turn round. Mr. Scott contends that financially-literate activists have a world to gain through culture hacking and interacting with progressive-minded individuals within the financial community. Mr. Scott maps the money trails that fund the fossil fuel industry in order to help us better understand how shareholder activism can be used to help derail big oil projects. Mr. Scott believes the precautionary principle should be invoked in order to curb the commodity trading practices that have caused food prices to escalate beyond the reach of poor and vulnerable populations. The author goes on to evaluate the tools that activists might use to draw more attention to the egregious financial practices that pose the greatest harms to people and the environment.

“Building” explores how finance might evolve for the better. Mr. Scott does not want the future to belong to state and corporate-sponsored solutions such as carbon trading schemes. Rather, Mr. Scott envisions that social impact stocks and bonds can be used to channel money to socially beneficial ventures such as retiring carbon credits and reducing prison recidivism. Mr. Scott is spot on when he says that we must have workable alternatives in place before Wall Street crashes yet again. Fortunately, we learn about a few of the myriad new technologies that promise to help community banks, peer-to-peer insurance pools, time banking and other socially-conscious trading systems thrive and scale up quickly. Mr. Scott also includes resources to help activists get involved in the struggle to democratize finance. In the final analysis, we cannot help but get excited about the very real possibility of how a new kind of financial system that prioritizes people’s needs over profits might come to pass.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

About the Author

Jennifer Laam earned her master's degree in History from Oakland University in Michigan and her bachelor's degree from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. She has lived in Los Angeles and the suburbs of Detroit, traveled in Russia and Europe, and worked in education and non-profit development. She currently resides in Northern California. The Secret Daughter of the Tsar is her first novel.

So excited about this one, but........

I struggled with the review for this book. Readers looking for a fast-paced, "what-if" partially set in Romanov Russia, will find this a fun, light read - a kind of "Da Vinci Code" for Nicholas and Alexandra. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm awash in multiple time period/family secret/real story behind the history type novels and I think this was just one too many for me. The multiple-time period structure has been done enough times that a book cannot rely on an obvious plot twist. If the multiple time-period structure reveals a lot ahead of time (and your big twist ending is pretty obvious) then the reader ends up expending a lot of effort reading chapters that set up things they already know. It's all in the careful balance of handing out clues vs. giving away too much.

Even with obvious plot twists, the overall premise of Tsar might have even worked with interesting writing or vibrant characters. Instead, supporting characters come and go - their only purpose is to serve as a plot device. There's not a whole lot here that differentiates amongst the three different time periods or even gives a sense of historical detail. I'm even willing to brush aside some of the improbabilities in the servant-Empress relationship that forms the center of the book and the motivations of historical characters who act in odd, not fully explained ways. But I was shocked when I accidentally hit the progress button in my e-galley copy and found that I was already 70% through the book. Not a whole lot had happened up until that point - I honestly thought the story was just getting started. The pacing of the book is set-up, set-up, no payoff.

I hate giving unfavorable reviews to first time authors - particularly an author who clearly loves the time period. I also know that in today's publishing environment a good idea like this one (did Nicholas and Alexandra have a fifth daughter?) will be quickly turned around by a publisher due to the demands of the market. I'm sure that others will find a lot of enjoyment here but I unfortunately just cannot recommend a book that is all premise and no execution.

Being a Russian Revolution enthusiast, I really enjoyed this book. Love hearing more about the days of the Romanovs. I thought the character development was wonderful and it kept me entertained throughout. I would definitely recommend it!

Admittedly, I went into this read knowing I was out of my comfort zone. It was the first non-YA read of the year for me, as well as the very first historical--much less Russian historical--I've ever read. Jennifer Laam's book did not let me down. She weaved her three main characters' stories together seamlessly and I totally did not see this ending happening at all. The Secret Daughter of the Tsar was an awesome twisty-turny ride through the Romanov family tree.

The prose was beautiful and definitely written from an author who not only knows her Russian history, but loves it as well. The story didn't read like a history book and didn't overwhelm me (coming into the read with little-to-no Russian knowledge). Jennifer made it easy for me as a reader to sink into the story and enjoy the ride through the different time periods with three different characters.

I went back a few times trying to decide which of the three characters I enjoyed most. While Lena was the oldest character (a servant from the imperial Russian court in 1902), I had a harder time connecting with her in the very beginning but fell in love with her strength and loyalty toward the end. Charlotte, a ballerina and mother trying to escape Paris during WWII, was my favorite character and won me over with her feistiness and bravery. And Veronica, a Russian history professor, rounded out the story with a wonderful and swoony romance with the man she thinks may be the true heir to the Russian throne.

Recommended For: anyone who has a love for historicals or a secret Romanov obsession. Anyone looking to read a modern day What If to a secret left behind in history books.
