Understanding Disorganized Attachment: Theory and Practice for Working with Children and Adults, by David Shemmings, Yvonne Shemmings

Disorganized attachment, the most extreme form of insecure attachment, can develop in a child when the person who is normally meant to protect them is a source of danger. This usually leads to 'fear without solution' and the effects can be lasting and damaging.

This book is a comprehensive and accessible text on disorganized attachment. It outlines what it is, how it can be identified and the key causes, including neurological, biochemical and genetic explanations. Factors that contribute to disorganized attachment are covered including unresolved loss and trauma, and the behaviour of caregivers. The authors also discuss evidence-based interventions to help families and carers as well as how to work with adults to prevent or minimize its occurrence. To root the theory in practice and to illustrate real-life examples of disorganized attachment case vignettes are included.

With an authoritative research base, this accessible text will be invaluable to practitioners and academics in the fields of social care, psychology, counselling and allied health professions as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Review
This accessible and informative book takes an up-to-date approach to the topic of disorganized attachment... The text has an authoritative research base and will be of use to social work and counselling/therapy professionals. -- The Journal of Analytical Psychology Shemmings and Shemmings cut to the crux of the child protection system... If the vision of practice featured in Understanding Disorganized Attachment is realized, social workers will have a research-based framework with which to assess and to assist parents and children most at risk of maltreatment. In turn, this knowledge could help raise social workers' confidence in their abilities, sense of efficacy in interventions and purpose in visits. -- Critical Social Policy When I read a book, I put a sticky note on any page I find interesting and intend to refer to later. In this book of 240 pages, there were 55 stickies. I read it again. It is an easy to read, though academic, book and, in parts, is entertaining. It draws from a list of references and demonstrates not only how our knowledge has developed over the years, but where we might go in the future. The subject matter is crucial to anyone working with, and making decisions on behalf of, children and families... I would recommend this book to any childcare practitioner in health and social care and carers. -- Seen and Heard I was keen to review this book and have not been disappointed. It is a scholarly and practical work containing a wealth of valuable information and theoretically researched suggestions... the book in its entirety is one that should be required reading for training in anything connected with children's welfare, for health and particularly mental health professionals, and for teacher training. -- Counselling Children & Young People This book is written in a clear, accessible style, without over-simplifying some of the very complex ideas. It is scholarly and well-researched. It also provides helpful introductions to attachment theory, metallisation and recent developments in neuroscience. -- Children & Young People Now A well-written book that clearly, and in detail, describes the ethology, assessment, and components of effective treatment of disorganized attachment. The authors explain the main concepts of attachment theory with a remarkable clarity that is refreshing and insightful, drawing on historical and everyday examples to illustrate their points. It is clear, complete, and put into easily understandable terms. The [authors] have written a seminal work on disorganized attachment. -- Dr Arthur Becker-Weidman, Director, The Center for Family Development in Williamsville, New York, USA This is a fabulous book. It provides a clear and coherent account of normal attachment systems in children and their parents, and an equally clear account of how the behaviours of parents affect the security of children's attachment. The authors are experienced real-world practitioners as well as researchers, and it shows. I hope and anticipate that this book will be read by all those working in child protection systems, especially family court judges and those who assess parents accused of maltreatment. -- Dr Gwen Adshead, Consultant Forensic Psychotherapist, Broadmoor Hospital, UK

The Reader is Betrayed
By David Hood
The actual plot of this book is not the problem. The way the characters are handled in the plot is. The editor of these books should be ashamed at the abysmal job he's done. There is no similarity between the three returning characters and their prior appearances.
In this tale we have Lidda the halfling thief return, she is changed for the better and has lost her mouth and her modern hip-hop slang from The Savage Caves. Krusk the half-orc barbarian returns in his 3rd, yes his third, incarnation. In City of Fire he was a good, loyal, team-player. In The Bloody Eye he changed as his IQ jumped, he got well spoken and even seemed to be able to read, directly contradicting his iconic statistics as well as becoming a leader. In this book there is no goodness left to Krusk, he seems to have a new backstory, no mention of his time in the forces of the Protector of the Obsidian Throne, his infatuated tavern wench Yddith from The Bloody Eye is mysteriously gone and not mentioned. He is now a cold-blooded killer, no doubts about it and probably well in the evil alignment. Mialee the elven wizard has lost her familiar, her bad eyesight and her bard lover. The new character, Vadania the druid, may as well not be there she is so superfluous.
Malthooz, the half-orc outsider from Krusk's home village(until Krusk changes again next story) was the most interesting of the lot, though his potential of becoming a cleric of Pelor is not pursued.
The triple-cross plot of the book, Thieve's Guild playing off our "heroes" against their wizard customer and the city watch is ok, but the execution is very poor. The collateral damage the characters cause without a twinge of regret is abominable. These incarnations of the adventurers cannot be considered "good" in any sense of the word. Innocent warehouse workers employed as a front are slaughtered by Krusk and Lidda, Mialee fireballs a dock to kill her pursuers resulting in a conflagration that is going to kill many and cost more their livelihood. They look back and say "We did what we had to do."
For the editor of the 10 books to allow such different portrayals of the characters, not to mention backgrounds, shows a complete and utter disdain for the discernment of the reader. Shameful and unforgiveable.

Disappointing
By A Customer
Having read a number of T.H. Lain's Dungeons & Dragons novels back-to-back in recent weeks, I've come to the conclusion this is a pseudonym for several writers working on the same series. This is very apparent in Treachery's Wake.
Whoever wrote Treachery's Wake clearly does not have the same grasp of the iconic characters as the "other" T.H. Lains demonstrated in The Living Dead and The Savage Caves, to name two. Gone is rogue thief Lidda's charming, smart-[aleck] banter. Gone are the quirks that made Elf wizard Mialee so appealing in The Living Dead, such as her allergy to alcohol, her raven alter ego and her bad eyesight (all completely forgetten and even contradicted in this book). The other characters are similarly miswritten.
But what I did not like most about this book is it reads more like a blood-thirsty action-adventure novel in the Executioner vein than a Dungeons and Dragons story. The book makes no bones about it: these adventurers are cold-blooded killers. They take life - monster and human - with nary a second thought. Mialee, in particular, reads more like a female Mac Bolan than a cultured Elf wizard who is hesitant to kill (as she is portrayed in other D&D series novels). Lidda spares a momentary thought for a number of innocent bystanders she kills at one point, but that's the extent of it.
Most unappealing is Orc barbarian Krusk, whose whole purpose in the book seems to be to act grumpy and kill people in the goriest manner possible.
The story's villain (who I won't reveal in order to preserve what little surprise this novel provides the reader) starts out interesting, but soon become nothing more than a one-dimensional character who -- once again -- resembles someone from the Executioner books more than D&D.
Maybe the person who used the Lain's name also writes for the Executioner series, because I saw so many similarities it's not even funny. With Mac Bolan, at least, such cold-bloodedness is expected, but in D&D while adventurers do have to kill 9/10 in order to complete a quest, they do so heroically. There is nothing heroic or even D&D-like about the way the iconic characters handle themselves in this novel.
If I had read this book first, before any others in the D&D series, I would have been turned off the whole series. As it is, I look upon Treachery's Wake as some sort of non-canon nightmare dreamt by Lidda or Mialee. If you haven't read a T.H. Lain Dungeons & Dragons novel before, this is NOT the book to start out with; even if you're reading them in order, it might not hurt to skip this one and come back to it only if some future D&D novel refers to the events in this story (as some of the books do have cross-continuity between them).
With any luck, time will show that this was an exception in an otherwise entertaining series of books.

One of the weaker of Lain's D&D books...
By Jonathan Burgoine
One of the weaker episodes in Lain's series so far, I'm a little hard pressed, however, to say why, exactly.

Lidda the halfling rogue, Mialee the elven wizardess, Vadania the elven druidess, Krusk the half-orc barbarian and a non-iconic half-orc character star in this tale, which involves the hiring of the group by a local thieves guild to rescue a powerful artifact. Alas, it's wisecracking Lidda who is behind this quest - she wants 'in' to the thieves guild, and as such, she takes centre stage in a lot of the actual plot of the story. But she's a little blind. This is after all, a thieves guild, and yet she doesn't seem to even consider a double-cross.

Most of the action takes place in a city, which is a change from the 'dungeon delve' aspect of most of Lain's works so far.

I think that's why I'm down on this one - it wasn't... big enough. Or, when it tried to be, it just sort of frustrated. Lidda wants to be in the guild so badly that she basically blinds herself to potential troubles, and Krusk is a stubbourn fool, to the point of stupidity. Only Mialee and Vadania stay true to their characters so far. Still, Lidda is a wisecrackin' fool, and she's always fun to read, even if she was chronically short-sighted in this book (no pun intended).

'Nathan

DEAD.
Eve was dead.
The words kept drumming in Catherine Lings mind as she walked up the gateway to the terminal. No matter how many times she told herself it was true, she still couldnt believe it. Not Eve Duncan. Not her friend, the woman who had helped to save her son.
Agent Ling? A sandy-haired young man was running after Catherine as she headed for baggage. Im Brad Linden. He showed her his CIA credentials. Agent Venable sent me to pick you up and take you to the memorial service.
Then go get your car while I pick up my bag. Catherine Ling didnt stop as she strode ahead of him. And why the hell didnt Venable come and get me himself? I need to have a few choice words with him.
Hes at the service. Its going on right now. He didnt want to show disrespect. Im afraid youre a little late.
Because no one told me that Eve She broke off. He was gazing at her warily, and she knew she must be radiating all the ferocity and sadness she was feeling. There was no use ripping at Venables errand boy because Venable had left her in ignorance of Eves death or the search when she was kidnapped several days ago. He would only try to make excuses for the inexcusable. Yes, she had been undercover in the jungles of Colombia, but that didnt mean that she wouldnt have somehow extricated herself and come home to help find Eve. Venable should have gotten word to her. No, shed had to find out in Miami when shed retrieved her own computer and been hit in the gut with the news story in USA Today. Just have that car out front and get me to that memorial service ASAP, Linden.
While she was waiting for her bag, she scanned the story in USA Today again. What did she expect to find? She had practically memorized the damn story on the flight from Miami. She supposed that she was trying to find an answer when there was no answer. The actual story of Eves kidnapping and murder was fairly cut-and-dried. The murderer had obviously been unbalanced and ignited explosives at a ghost town in Colorado, where he had been holding Eve captive. Since the details were sparse, they had concentrated on Eve Duncan herself. Her background, her accomplishments, quotes from famous law-enforcement officials who had used her services. All were very worth reading, Catherine thought bitterly. It wasnt often that the media got a chance to spotlight a genuinely good person. Eve had been an illegitimate child born in the slums who had given birth herself at sixteen to a little girl, Bonnie. The child had changed her life. Eve had finished her education and straightened out her mother, who was on drugs. Then the world had come crashing down when her Bonnie, seven years old, had been kidnapped and killed. Yet Eve hadnt let it destroy her. She had gone back to school and studied forensic sculpting. Since then, she had become perhaps the most skilled forensic sculptor in the world. She had brought closure to thousands of families whose children would never have been identified without her help.
Never let a good deed go unpunished, Catherine thought. That old adage was too true in Eves case.
And, dammit, she was misting up again. She closed her computer and jammed it in her carry-on bag. She grabbed her phone and tried Joe Quinn again. Voice mail. Shed called him from the Miami Airport as soon as shed read the story about Eves memorial service being held today. It had gone to voice mail then, too. Shed left a message, but he hadnt called back. Maybe he didnt want to talk to her, she thought. Why should he? He had loved Eve with every ounce of his being, and he thought Catherine hadnt even cared enough to try to find her when that monster, Doane, had kidnapped her.
I cared, Joe. God, how I care. I would have come.
She wanted to kill Venable.
She might do it if he didnt have an explanation that she could tolerate.
And she wanted to release the tears that she had been forcing back since shed read that damn news story. Her friend was dead, and, somehow, she felt as if it was her fault, that if shed known, she might have been able to stop it. Lord, her eyes were stinging.
Not here. Not now.
When she was alone with her thoughts and memories of Eve and had gotten through this memorial service.
Not even a funeral because that crazy bastard had blown them both to bits.
She wished with all her heart that Doane was still alive and here, so that she could personally send him straight to hell.
But Venable had cheated her out of that pleasure, too, by not bringing her into the picture when Eve needed her most.
Damn him.
She grabbed her bag as it went around the carousel and headed for the door.

GOD, LING WAS GORGEOUS, Bradford thought as he pulled his car close to the curb where Catherine Ling was waiting impatiently. She was sleek and sexy, with shoulder-length dark hair and eyes tilted slightly, increasing the exotic magnetism she radiated. He knew she was the illegitimate daughter of an American soldier and a Korean whore who was half-Russian. Shed been born in Saigon but had grown up on the streets of Hong Kong. Hed heard stories about her from other agents, but hed never met her. The stories had been interesting but very, very lethal. She was sharp and independent and likely to run her own show when she was on a mission. Something Venable definitely didnt like but evidently tolerated because she got the job done. Shed been CIA since Venable had picked her up in Hong Kong when she was only fourteen. What was she now? Late twenties?
Got everything? He leaned over and opened the passenger door for her. Ill have you at Quinns lake cottage in thirty minutes. I just called Venable, and he said the service had just ended.
Dammit, I missed it? Im surprised you got through to him, she said sarcastically. How nice. Hes not been answering my calls.
Oops. Im sure thats just a technical error. He was very concerned about you. He hurriedly handed her his computer. Ive pulled up the files on Doane and the catastrophe at the ghost town. Venable was sure youd want to look them over.
I would have liked to look them over before the son of a bitch blew her up. She gazed blindly down at the computer. Youve read it. Fill me in.
Eve Duncan was kidnapped from her lake cottage home in north Atlanta several days ago. Because shes one of the foremost forensic sculptors in the world, it was assumed at the time that the kidnapper might be one of the nuts or serial killers shed targeted by her work.
But if Venable is involved, then thats not why she was killed, Catherine said grimly. Im surprised Eve let him pull her into a CIA mission.
She didnt. James Doane had been in a safe house in Goldfork, Colorado, and slipped away from the agent guarding him. When Venable realized he was gone, he thought there might be a possibility of his heading toward Eve Duncan, but he couldnt be sure that
Why? Why would he go after Eve?
Thats not in the report. Youll have to ask Venable.
You can bet I will. Venable fouled up and didnt protect Eve. Is that the truth?
Im sure there is an explanation. As I said, he wasnt sure Eve Duncan would be a target.
She drew a deep breath. Lets go down another path. Why was Jim Doane in that safe house? Was he a foreign agent? A witness?
He shook his head. He was the father of Kevin Relling, who was assassinated five years ago. His son was in Special Forces in the Army and turned very dirty. He was working with al-Qaeda in Pakistan and blocking the hunt for Bin Laden. He also indulged his penchant for raping and killing little girls in whatever city he found himself. He killed the five-year-old daughter of General Tarther in Marseilles because the general was trying to zero in on the al-Qaeda group.
Very dirty. Scum.
The general went crazy and eventually hired a hit man, Lee Zander, to find and go after Doanes son. Zander killed him and hired a funeral director to cremate the remains. Doane arrived too late to grab anything but his sons skull from the furnace.
Okay, then that would be a reason for his kidnapping Eve. Doane wanted Eve to do a reconstruction on the sons skull. Right?
I understand that she was doing just that while she was his captive.
Then why would the crazy bastard kill her? She was smart. If that job was the ransom he wanted, she wouldnt risk her life by refusing to do a reconstruction.
Youll have to ask Venable, he said again. All I know is that Doane took her to a ghost town in the Rio Grande Forest in Colorado. We traced him to an abandoned saloon there. When our units, Quinn, and Jane MacGuire were closing in on him, he set off a charge that blew up the saloon and half the town. He glanced at her. You look Are you okay?
No, Im not okay. It shouldnt have happened. Someone should have stopped it. Venable should have stopped it. Her voice fell to a whisper. I should have stopped it.
Venable said that you were on a very important mission and that you
Screw Venable. Her gaze shifted to the passing scene out the window. Anything else? Are they sure she was in that damn saloon?
Yes. Everyone saw Doane take her into the place, and, a few minutes later, our infrared scopes confirmed two people inside. They were still on the scopes when the place blew.
DNA?
Were working on it, but it may take a long while. There wasnt much left. As I said, the blast practically leveled the town. She was in
I dont want the details. Not now.
It appeared that Ling was not as tough as he had heard, Bradford thought. Or maybe shes just human, like the rest of us. I hear Eve Duncan was quite a woman. Its a great loss. Everyone from senators to a dozen police chiefs are at that memorial service.
They dont know how great a loss, Catherine said. They know the work, not the woman, not the friend. She was silent for a while, forcing herself to read the file. Then she looked up, and asked, How close are we?
Five minutes. The service was held outside by the lake at the cottage where she lived with Joe Quinn. He thought shed like it to be at her home. Pretty place.
She didnt speak for a moment. I know. Thats where I first met Eve. I stayed with her while she worked on a computer age progression on photos of my son.
That was one of the stories about Ling, too. Her son had been held prisoner by a Russian criminal for nine years, and she had never ceased trying to find him. It was only after Eve Duncan had helped her that she had been able to locate him. Im sure you were very grateful.
Are you? She looked at him. You have no idea.
He pulled his gaze away with some difficulty. Catherine Ling might be as lethal as a striking panther, but he was suddenly finding himself having visions of ladies in distress and knights in shining armor and himself somewhere in the mix. Crazy. It just went to show how right the stories were about the fascination she effortlessly exerted. I know youre upset. If I can help, just call me. He almost bit his tongue. Venable would not like the idea of his moving into Lings camp when she was definitely at odds with him. Though Im sure Venable will straighten everything out.
He swung into the grove that Quinn had designated as a parking area. Here we are. Id drive you closer, but there are people milling all over the place. He quickly got out, ran around, and opened the door for her. Everyone is around the cottage down toward the lake. Would you like me to go with you?
No. She strode toward the cottage. Id advise you to stay clear. You wouldnt like dodging the flak.
He watched her disappear from view, then reluctantly turned away. Catherine Ling might be wrong. He found himself experiencing a strange blankness as if hed been witnessing a fireworks display, and now there was only dark sky.
It might be worth dodging a little flak to see her in action.
***
CATHERINE SPOTTED VENABLE in the crowd two minutes after she turned the corner of the cottage.
He was wearing a dark suit and looked surprisingly formal. He was talking to a man in an NYPD uniform. Then he lifted his gaze and saw her at the edge of the crowd.
Wariness.
Then he lifted the wineglass in his hand and nodded.
Catherine drew a deep breath and tried to smother the anger. If she confronted Venable now, she would make a scene, and that was the last thing she wanted to do at this service honoring Eve. Shed deal with him later. She nodded curtly and turned to look for Joe Quinn.
He was standing talking to a tall, white-haired man she vaguely recognized as a congressman. Joe looked pale and unsmiling, but he could obviously still function. She started to make her way toward him.
He looked up and saw her. Then, with a word to the congressman, he left him and was walking quickly toward her. Catherine.
Joe, I tried to call you. She took a step closer. I didnt know. Believe me, I didnt know anything, or I would have come to
I saw that youd called, but I couldnt talk. He took her elbow and was propelling her toward the corner of the house. Ive been surrounded all day. He stopped as he reached an unoccupied stretch of lawn on the side of the cottage. He took a minute to look around and make sure there was no one near. I cant really talk now either, but you have to know, dammit.
What are you talking about? I do know. I just found out today in Miami. I cant tell you how
Listen. His hands grasped her shoulders. Its not what you think. His voice lowered. Go into the cottage and talk to Kendra Michaels. I told her earlier that you were coming. I knew I couldnt get away from this hullabaloo.
Joe, what the hell are you saying?
Im saying that though you look terrific in black, you shouldnt go into mourning. He turned away. Ill see you later. Go talk to Kendra.
She stared in shock as he walked away. For a moment, she couldnt get her breath. He couldnt mean what she thought he meant.
She closed her eyes. Oh, God. Let it be true. Let it all be a nightmarish mistake.
Let Eve still be alive.
***
CATHERINE ENTERED THE cottage and slammed the door behind her. Kendra Michaels?
Yes. Kendra was standing at the window, staring down at the mourners moving from group to group on the lawn bordering the lake. Thats me. And you are?
Catherine Ling. She crossed the room and showed her ID. Joe told me to come to see you. Apparently its your job to tell me what the hell is going on here.
Kendra nodded. Joe called me and told me you were coming up to ask questions. I just had to verify your ID. There are too many reporters drifting around here at the memorial service. Eve was very well-known. She smiled faintly. Very private, but everyone knew she was phenomenal.
Youre damn right she was. Her lips tightened. Were both talking past tense. Yet from what Joe said, Im guessing shes probably very much alive. Her voice was uneven. Dont tell me that hes wrong. I wont have it.
Sorry. Joe didnt steer you wrong. Ive just gotten used to playing the sorrowful, regretful friend in the last week, Kendra said. I believe the chances are excellent that Eve is alive.
Catherine felt a wave of relief surge through her. Thank God.
I cant be absolutely sure, but Id bet every particle of my experience and judgment that she lived through the explosion at that ghost town in Colorado.
And why should I trust your judgment?
Maybe you shouldnt. Kendra tilted her head. I dont believe you have much to do with trust.
Catherines eyes narrowed on her face. Why? Did Eve or Joe tell you about me?
No. Just an observation. Did Eve mention me?
Yes, Eve told me about you a few months ago. You were born blind, but a surgical procedure gave you your sight just a few years ago, is that right?
Kendra nodded.
But while you were blind, you developed your other senses to such a degree that youve become quite the detective.
Kendra shrugged. Make that a reluctant detective. My profession is music therapy. Ive helped out on a few cases.
You werent reluctant as far as Eve was concerned.
No, we became friends. You help your friends. Then, when I heard she was abducted, I dropped everything and came right down. Kendra studied her. Joe said you were close to Eve, but she never mentioned you to me.
Why should she? Our relationship was confidential.
Confidential? Thats an interesting designation for a close Kendra stopped. Oh, youre CIA, arent you?
Catherines eyes widened. Where did that come from?
I dont expect you to confirm it. I was watching out the window, and I saw you and that CIA guy, Venable, exchange a look when you arrived. He was tense, you were angry. Oh, yes, you know each other. Do you work for him?
Catherine looked away.
I dont expect you to answer that either. She smiled faintly. Oh, and you quite often wear a shoulder holster under that black jacket, but not today.
Catherine nodded. Out of respect. She looked under her left arm. Its that obvious?
Its a little baggy there. Nothing anyone would notice.
Except you?
Except me.
Or maybe a North Korean assassin. It might be time to invest in a more discreet shoulder holster.
Im sure youre equipped with other weapons. Kendra tilted her head. Im good with dialects, but Im having a tough time with yours. Youre clipping your consonants and slightly flattening your vowel sounds. Did the linguistic people at Langley teach you to do that?
They may have.
Its very effective. I have no idea where youre from.
Good. Ive made a few enemies over the years, and the last thing I want is for them to be able to find out anything about me.
Then youve done a good job.
Catherine gave her a cool glance. Youre doing quite an efficient job yourself. Youre laying out your credentials on display to show me just how good that judgment I challenged is.
Kendra smiled. I thought it would save time in the long run. I dont need your trust, but I need an open mind.
Catherine took a step closer. So are you going to tell me what happened in Colorado?
How much do you know already?
Just what I read in the newspaper and the CIA records. Plus Joes rather cryptic reassurance that Eve is probably still alive, which makes this entire day rather surreal.
That it is.
Then talk to me, Catherine said fiercely. I dont have many friends, and I dont like the idea of losing one. I dont like it so much that Im on the edge of violence. Ive got to know something.
Ill tell you everything I know. When the saloon exploded in that ghost town, the infrared scanners showed two people inside.
Those recordings are always very accurate. The explosion was so powerful, it rocked the whole town. Theres no way anyone could have survived that.
They didnt. And we found the skeletal fragments and burned flesh.
Am I missing something?
Those two people were possibly dead already. But they werent Eve and Doane.
Catherine was silent. Let it be true, she prayed. Are you sure?
Were still waiting on DNA, but Im sure. I think each of those bodies was wrapped in thermal-reflective sleeping-bag liners to hold their body heat for the infrared scopes. I went down with the forensic team after they extinguished the fire and found traces of the reflective material at the site.
But there were a dozen witnesses who saw Eve and Doane go into that saloon just a few minutes before that blast. How could they have gotten away without someones seeing them?
Doane obviously knew the area very well. They were in a ghost town in the bottom of a small, bowl-shaped valley. Locals call it the punch bowl. It had been raining heavily, and the street was muddy. The strange thing was that it wasnt flooded.
Why was that strange?
With water coming down from every side of the valley, it had no place to go. It should have flooded, unless it was draining to someplace.
Catherine thought about it. Like a cavern?
Very good. There were fissures that ran behind the buildings. Water drained through them to a stream in an underground cavern. It feeds an even larger stream that runs down the mountain. We didnt know about the cavern and the underground stream, but we used the water from that bigger stream to help put out the fire.
Catherine could feel the excitement surging within her. You think Doane took Eve out the back and down into this cavern?
Its a twenty-foot drop, but the water is deep enough that it wouldnt have been a problem. The fissure was so narrow that when Doane first got to the ghost town, it was easy for him to cover it with brush to hide the cavern. And the explosion completely covered up the fissures with debris, so we didnt even know they were there until I looked for them later. Doane did a good job of covering his tracks.
Do we know whose bodies were in there?
Not yet. There wasnt much left of them. We were lucky they werent vaporized. But the fact that it was so muddy gave me some interesting tracks outside in front of the saloon. An off-road vehicle arrived, and Terence Blick, a partner of Doanes, stepped out of it. Then Blick walked around to the back, unloaded something heavy, and walked into the saloon with it.
You got all that from footprints?
I had a run-in with Blick a couple days before. I stopped to see if I could help a policeman hed shot down, and I saw Blicks footprints then. He was wearing different boots, but the stride was unmistakable. He swung his legs in such a way that the right and left prints were directly in front of each other, almost single file. Fairly unique. And the footsteps sunk about three inches deeper after he walked around to the back of the truck.
You think he took a body into that saloon. But there were two bodies in there.
I believe the second corpse could be Blick himself.
Catherine slowly nodded. Doane killed his own partner?
Blicks footprints went in, but never came out. But the off-road vehicle was driven out of the town. Id bet Doane charged Blick with securing a womans corpse, but he needed a second one, a male. So he killed him. He went outside in the street with Eve and showed us all that she was there, then went back inside. He slipped out the back and jumped, either dragging or carrying Eve with him, into the cavern before Venables team arrived with their infrared gear. He had a raft down there and rode the stream about three miles away, where he had Blicks vehicle parked. I saw the prints on the bank. The tire tread belonged to a set of Super Swamper TSL. That meant it was almost certainly the same 4 4 off-road vehicle that Blick drove into the ghost town. Doane took Eve away while the town was still burning. She smiled bitterly. Quite a distraction.
How long did it take you to piece this together?
Too long. Hours. Doane could have taken Eve anywhere by the time we figured out that they were still alive. It might have taken me even longer if Margaret hadnt She broke off and leaned back against Eves workbench. I should have seen it all sooner. But I couldnt see anything clearly that night. All I could think about was that moment when the saloon blew only minutes after Id seen Eve dragged through that door. We were all in shock.
I can understand that.
Well, I dont understand. I should have been thinking, acting, not feeling.
Its amazing that you figured it out at all. Eve was right to be so impressed with you.
Fat lot of good its done. Shes still out there with him.
Catherine glanced at the funeral guests outside. Why this charade? Why not let on that you know theyre still alive?
Venable supposedly has an army of agents searching for Doane and Eve as we speak. We thought we might have better luck if Doane didnt know we were still looking for him. He was evidently counting on the fact that DNA on those skeletal fragments could take weeks to come back and allow him to proceed with his plans. Her lips twisted. According to Venable, Doane is very proud of his ability to concoct his nasty little plans. This particular plan was very intricate, and he clearly wanted us to think they were both dead, so that hed be free to go forward.
And do what?
He has a target. Lee Zander, the man who killed his dirtbag of a son, Kevin. Not an easy target. Zander is probably one of the foremost assassins in the world.
And what does Eve have to do with his damn target? I thought that shed been taken to do a reconstruction on the son.
Thats what we all thought. But it appears that wasnt Doanes primary motive. Doane thinks Zander is Eves father. Since Zander killed his son, he wants to see him bleed as he kills his daughter in front of him.
Catherine went still. Father? And is he?
I dont know. Venable seems to think that he is. She shook her head. But what does matter is that Doane thinks its true.
Frustrated, Catherine said, There are too many unknowns. What the hell is happening here?
I dont know. Ask Venable. Though Im not sure hell tell you.
What do you mean?
I dont like the way he was trying to run the show at the ghost town. She paused. I thought he was being stupid by bringing in an attack team to go after Doane in that saloon. But now Im not sure if he was stupid or a little too smart.
What are you saying? You think Venables crooked?
I think he has an agenda, and Eves not at the top of it. She met Catherines eyes. And why didnt he let you know about what was happening to Eve? Youre her friend, and Id judge youre fairly lethal. Why not bring you into this chaos of a situation?
Thats what I asked him.
Were you satisfied with the answer?
No. Hes been dodging it.
Good. Then youll not trust him any more than you do me.
She smiled faintly. But I believe Im beginning to trust you, Kendra. Her smile faded. Ive got to get this clear in my mind, but I dont want to blow your little scenario. Who knows that Eve is alive?
Joe, Zander, Jane MacGuire, Margaret Douglas, and the people who have been concerned with the hunt for Eve from the beginning.
Not Eves mother, Sandra?
No, it was Joe Quinns call. He decided that she was too erratic to trust with that information. She made a face. Actually, Joe was being diplomatic. Replace erratic with selfish. Youll notice she didnt come todaytoo devastated. But not too devastated to give one TV and three print interviews this morning. She shrugged. I dont know what their relationship was, but it was definitely complex.
Catherine was mentally going over the other names Kendra had given her. Margaret Douglas she repeated. You broke off in the middle of telling me something about a Margaret. Why?
Margaret is difficult.
You dont want to talk about her. Catherines eyes narrowed on her face as she tried to remember the exact words Kendra had spoken. She had been so upset and intent on digging for the truth that she had dismissed it at the time. You said something about your not being able to put the entire scenario together sooner except for her.
No, just not as soon. She turned back to the window. Look, Im not going to try to explain Margaret to you. She has to be experienced. All Im telling you is that shes a good kid and no phony. Id trust her in the trenches.
But Im not you. Ill make up my own mind, Catherine said. Her gaze followed Kendras to the crowd below. Which one is Margaret?
The girl standing next to Jane MacGuire. She tends to stay close to her when she can. Shes a bit protective.
Of Jane MacGuire? She had met Jane, and no one appeared to be less in need of protection. Strong. Very strong. And Kendra had been referring to Margaret as a girl, even a kid. She gazed curiously at Jane and Margaret standing beside her.
Golden. Margaret seemed bathed in sunlight, tanned, sun-streaked hair, slim in her simple black dress. She did look young, nineteen or twenty at the oldest. She was appropriately solemn for the occasion but there was an aura of vitality, a barely restrained exuberance, held in check. Why protective?
Jane saved her life. She took a bullet for her from Doanes cohort, Blick, when all of this madness first started. Margaret believes in payback.
Interesting. I believe I have to talk to this Margaret Douglas. She turned toward the door. Would you like to come along and introduce me?
No, I have some thinking to do. Youre on your own.
Thinking?
Things are changing, Kendra said soberly. I have some decisions to make.
Dont we all, Catherine said. She opened the door. Thank you, Kendra. And thank God you found out that we might still have a chance of freeing her.
I should have found out sooner. Its to do all over again.
Maybe not. It appears a trap is in the offing.
Hes managed to sidestep traps so far. She paused. Good luck, Catherine.
The words sounded curiously final, Catherine thought, as she left the house and ran down the porch steps. Imagination? Maybe. Everything was looking dark to her right now.
Dismiss it.
She had to probe, to find which way to go. She had not been pleased that Kendra Michaels had been suspicious about Venables motives and response to that disaster in the ghost town. Kendra had impressed her as being very sharp. Catherine had worked with Venable since she was a girl of fourteen and knew him as well as anyone. He was always an enigma, but he was a professional. Yet his priorities were always to the job, and she could see that if he had been torn, Eve might have been downgraded in importance.
So walk carefully and discreetly around Venable.
And dont trust him any more than she could throw him.
She started to make her way through the crowd toward Jane and Margaret.
But shed only gone a few steps when Margaret Douglas said something to Jane and was walking briskly toward Catherine.
Catherine stopped and watched her move. Margaret was worth watchingconfidence, grace, vitality. Smiling at the people in the crowd as she brushed by them. She couldnt decide whether Margaret was beautiful or just attractive because that inner glow was so strong it dominated everything about her.
Youre Catherine Ling, she said as she reached her. She reached out to shake her hand. Im Margaret. Youll want to talk to me.
I will? How do you know?
I saw you going up to the cottage to talk to Kendra, and I asked Jane who you were. A smile lit her face. Im glad you came, Catherine. Jane said youre very tough, very clever, and that you owe Eve a debt for helping to save your son. A debt like that is great motivation. She looked around her. Want to go for a walk with me in the woods? There are too many people around.
Catherine fell into step with her. How did you know that Id come looking for you after I talked to Kendra? she asked again. What do you know that she doesnt?
Nothing. But she doesnt like to talk about me. She chuckled. Its part loyalty because she likes me. And its part discomfort because Im kinda hard to explain.
Thats what she told me. They were deep in the woods now, and Catherine stopped and turned to face her. I dont give a damn about discomfort, but I dont like lies. She said something about your not being a phony. What was that supposed to mean?
Did she say that? That was nice. Its particularly hard for her to defend me when I offend her sense of logic. Thats a primary sin for Kendra. She reached down and took off one of her high heels. I have to get these off for a minute. Im not used to anything but my flip-flops or tennis shoes. She flexed her bare feet. Thats better. I knew I had to look somber and dressed up, but I cant stand these heels. I bought them at Payless at the mall, but they dont She broke off. Youre looking impatient. Sorry. Youre worried about Eve like the rest of us, and youre in the dark. How can I help?
By shining some light, she said curtly. Youre right, Im worried about Eve, and Im not going to let that bastard kill her if theres a chance of saving her. I have to know everything, dammit. Kendra said that you were the trigger that made her realize that perhaps Eve hadnt been killed. How did you know that was possible?
Oh, it was more than possible, Margaret said. It was fact. I told Jane and Kendra that the night of the explosion, but theyre both cautious. They wanted to believe me, but they couldnt bring themselves to raise their hopes until they had proof. She beamed. So I sent Kendra to use all that logic and deductive reasoning that she does so well to gather their proof. Didnt she do a fine job?
Excellent. Now tell me how you knew that Eves being alive was a fact.
She sighed. Okay, here it comes. She made a face. Theres a wolf pack in those mountains, and wolves are usually easy for me to deal with. Not like a dog, but close enough.
What?
The pack is always on the hunt for food. Naturally, since theyre in the wild, they would have to be. When the wolves noticed Doane and Eve in the mountains, they were considering them for their next meal.
Where is this going? Catherine was frowning. I dont want a nature lesson, Margaret.
But you want an answer from me. Thats what Im giving you. For some reason, the wolves became intrigued by Doane. Margaret tilted her head. Peculiar. But you can never tell what a wolf will do. Anyway, they started tracking, shadowing him and Eve. I asked if it was because of the food factor. But that wasnt the reason, it was something else. Doane had to go away. It was important for him to go away.
Go away?
Die. Doane had to die. It was important to the wolves that he die.
Catherine couldnt take any more of this. Stop spinning fairy tales. I want answers, Margaret.
Youre getting them. She added simply, The wolves didnt like Doane, but there was something else. They felt he had to die. It was something to do with the natural order. I couldnt get it clear. It had some connection with death and silence and a little red-haired kid.
Margaret.
You want to know how I know.
I want to know why youre bullshitting me.
I know because the night of the fire, I tracked down one of the males who was staking out the ghost town. I heard him howling, and I thought maybe She smiled. And I struck it rich, like they say in the gold towns. Pure gold, Catherine. Karak was pure gold.
Karak?
The wolf. Thats the closest I can translate his name.
Wolves have names?
Yes, not all animals identify themselves in that way even mentally, of course. But wolves are on a higher plane. She drew a deep breath. Id better get this over with quickly. Youre getting impatient and angry and ready to call the local booby hatch. Look, I have a certain ability to communicate with animals. Ive had it since I was a kid. No, Im not some kind of Dr. Doolittle. I just get impressions and can sometimes tap into memories. It can help on occasion. I was working as a tech at a canine experimental facility down in the Caribbean on Summer Island when I was drawn into all this. They thought I was damn valuable. She grimaced. Weird, but valuable. And they eventually got used to me. Does it make you feel better to know that those vets actually believed in me?
No, I make my own opinions.
Then make it now.
Catherine looked her directly in the eye. Margaret never flinched but held her gaze with boldness and shining clarity.
Truth. Catherine couldnt know whatever else comprised the person who was Margaret Douglas, but she recognized honesty.
Catherine shrugged. Kendra says youre not a phony. Thats all thats really important. As for the rest, Ive run into stranger things. Voodoo, snake charmers ghosts. I grew up on the streets of Hong Kong, and Ive traveled all over the world. Its hard to cling strictly to reality when youve gone face-to-face with some of the things I have. She added, So bring on your wolf if he can help me find out anything about Eve.
I didnt expect that. Margarets face glowed with delight. Its not often I run into someone who is easy. Joe was a little skeptical, but he gave me a chance. Kendra was very difficult. Its hard for her to accept anything thats not black-and-white, and Im definitely on the gray side.
So are wolves. Can we get back to your story now?
Oh, yes. Karak. After I tracked him down, it took hours before I was able to find out anything other than that it was necessary that Doane die or go away as he termed it. But when he began to trust me, he let me see more. She paused. It was the stream. He saw Doane and Eve go down the stream in a raft and go ashore miles away from the town. Eve didnt move, probably unconscious. Doane deflated the raft and tossed it in a vehicle and took off.
Where?
Out of the forest, headed south. They lost his scent after that and came back to the mountains.
Damn.
Margaret chuckled. You cant expect anything more. They did the best they could. Anyway, Kendra believed me when I showed her where the vehicle had been parked, and she found the tire prints. After that, she started investigating on her own. She didnt tell anyone what she was doing until shed gathered all the information, then she went to Joe and Jane to decide what to do.
And they decided on this charade.
Yes, a chance to take Doane off guard. Margaret nodded. It might or might not work, but if he doesnt expect anyone to know hes alive, it gives us a little edge. At this point, well take any advantage we can get. She added soberly, We have to find her, Catherine. In those hours after we thought she was dead, it almost broke Jane and Joe. Eve is too important to too many people to let her go. All of those people who came to this memorial service The stories Ive heard today. Every life is important, but Eve is special.
Yes, she is, Catherine said. For an instant, memories flooded back to her of moments in her own life when Eve had stepped in and given her time and risked her life to help bring her boy home to her. She cleared her throat. Of course well get her back. Do you know anything else that could help me?
Margaret shook her head. Nothing but that those wolves really wanted to bring down Doane for some reason.
Thats interesting but not pertinent. She smiled. Now I suggest that you put on your shoes, and we go back to that crowd. I want to talk to Joe again if I can get him away from all those mourners who have him cornered.
Hes hating it. Hes particularly angry about all those reporters and media people he had to let come to make sure Doane would know about Eves service. He said Eve would hate this kind of show if she were really dead.
If she were really dead, she wouldnt care either way.
Margaret gestured. You know what I mean.
Yes, I do. Shed just want to fade away and live on as a memory. Thats what Id want, too. They had reached the edge of the trees, and she saw that Joe was still surrounded. Shed have to wait until he was free, she realized impatiently.
She had a sudden thought. Zander. Is Lee Zander here? I need to talk to him. He seems to be the center of this equation.
Zander didnt come. He disappeared shortly after the fire was put out. Margaret shook her head. Dont count on talking to him. Im not even sure he cares whether Eve is alive or not. Though the idea that Doane is still a threat to him might spur him.
To hell with what he cares about. Im going to talk to him.
Whatever. Margaret was strolling toward Jane. I warned you. Everyone has to march to their own drummer.
Catherine stayed where she was at the edge of the crowd, waiting for Joe.
She could see why Joe was on edge about the media. A TV cameraman was drifting around setting up shots of different dignitaries. There was no bank of microphones, but there were two reporters who had hand mikes.
She instinctively tried to fade back into the shadows. Was it worth it? All this media attention that Joe Quinn hated so much and was enduring on the chance that it might help Eve in some way.
Are you out there watching, Doane?

Thank goodness it's over
By linliv3
Three books to tell one story? Disgraceful.

Book 1, Taking Eve plot line: Eve is kidnapped by a psychopath to reconstruct the skull of his psychotic son. ...could have been presented in 100 pages or less.

Book 2, Hunting Eve plot line: Family and friends search for Eve who is presumed dead at the end of the "book". ...worth
100 pages tops.

Book 3, Silencing Eve. While this segment of the story finally has a more workable, in-depth plot line Johansen actually becomes too verbose. I found myself a little over half way through the book skimming quickly through page after page of unnecessary story line and dialogue, something I have never done before with an Iris Johansen novel.

While I found Silencing Eve to be the best of this prolonged saga I am still incredibly disappointed with Iris Johansen for selling what could have been one outstanding novel in the format of three books. Due to her greed and lack of consideration for her readers this will be the last Johansen novel I will ever purchase.

The one plus in this whole trilogy farce is revisiting all the beloved characters (whom Ms Johansen has so brilliantly written) we have come to know over the years of the Eve Duncan series.

Never again
By Kelly5472
Let me start by saying, I have read all of Iris Johansen's books and have always enjoyed the Eve Duncan series more than any of her other works. Even though she had an element of the "unbelievable" to her stories, I could get past that because I enjoyed the characters and the way they were developing. That being said, I'm done. This trilogy should have barely filled one book, let alone 3. Ms. Johansen must really be out of ideas. Page after page of the same useless dialogue. The same conversations repeated between different combinations of the characters over and over again. Joe was completely missing in this story except to give people dirty looks. Jane was front and center, but all she did is act like a brat, causing everyone to have to watch after her instead of looking for Eve. And, the dialogue and expressions Johansen uses in all the conversations makes it sound like it was written by a 16 year old girl. I really can't understand why two "Greek God" like characters are battling over Jane, who has no personality except to be a spoiled brat. You've got FBI, SEAL, CIA, police type characters but nobody can figure anything out for themselves, they have to have Bonnie's ghost solve it all for them. None of them work together, they just run around on their own getting in each other's way and keeping everyone else in the dark. If I have to read one more time, a character tells someone "I've found out something important.....but I won't tell you yet".....It's kind of ridiculous. All everyone talks about is how "special" Eve is.....really? Why? She's also kind of a spoiled brat who has only cared about finding Bonnie and now that she has, there's no personality or story left. I fail to see why everyone who meets her is just so mesmerized by her. I was very, very disappointed with this book. And, it spent too much time rehashing the information from the first book, which was all in the second book, and now in the third again. Stop with the trilogy stuff. If you have an idea for a story, write the damn story, don't try to stretch it. And if you have no new ideas, stop ruining your characters. I kept reading the books because I liked the characters. Well, you've now cured me of that. I don't like any of these characters anymore.

Disappointing
By R. Burson
I have read all of the Eve Duncan books, and many others written by Iris Johansen. I have been a promoter/fan/advocate of the Duncan series. With that being said, I was very disappointed with Silencing Eve. It was unfortunate Eve's character was drowned out by the Jane McGuire saga... blah blah blah...boring!! I find Jane McGuire's character to be one that would qualify for a bad daily soap opera, beautiful woman and their Adonis men... blah blah blah boring..leaving the search for Eve, astray. The quality of this book was also disappointing, whoever is behind the proof reading needs to do it more than once since there are several lines that are incomplete and missing words to complete the thought process and sentence. I love the Eve Duncan series, and I could not wait to complete this trilogy and saddened by the end product.

1941: The Year That Keeps Returning, by Slavko Goldstein

A New York Review Books Original

The distinguished Croatian journalist and publisher Slavko Goldstein says, “Writing this book about my family, I have tried not to separate what happened to us from the fates of many other people and of an entire country.” 1941: The Year That Keeps Returning is Goldstein’s astonishing historical memoir of that fateful year—when the Ustasha, the pro-fascist nationalists, were brought to power in Croatia by the Nazi occupiers of Yugoslavia. On April 10, when the German troops marched into Zagreb, the Croatian capital, they were greeted as liberators by the Croats. Three days later, Ante Pavelić, the future leader of the Independent State of Croatia, returned from exile in Italy and Goldstein’s father, the proprietor of a leftist bookstore in Karlovac—a beautiful old city fifty miles from the capital—was arrested along with other local Serbs, communists, and Yugoslav sympathizers. Goldstein was only thirteen years old, and he would never see his father again.

More than fifty years later, Goldstein seeks to piece together the facts of his father’s last days. The moving narrative threads stories of family, friends, and other ordinary people who lived through those dark times together with personal memories and an impressive depth of carefully researched historic details. The other central figure in Goldstein’s heartrending tale is his mother—a strong, resourceful woman who understands how to act decisively in a time of terror in order to keep her family alive.

From 1941 through 1945 some 32,000 Jews, 40,000 Gypsies, and 350,000 Serbs were slaughtered in Croatia. It is a period in history that is often forgotten, purged, or erased from the history books, which makes Goldstein’s vivid, carefully balanced account so important for us today—for the same atrocities returned to Croatia and Bosnia in the 1990s. And yet Goldstein’s story isn’t confined by geographical boundaries as it speaks to the dangers and madness of ethnic hatred all over the world and the urgent need for mutual understanding.

From Booklist
During WWII, a Nazi-backed regime ruled Croatia, with deadly consequences for hundreds of thousands. One of those was the father of Goldstein, who recounts his family’s experiences during the horrific period. Goldstein, 13 when Germany installed the Ustasha regime in 1941, and his younger brother had a resourceful mother who sensed the imminence of roundups and arranged the eventual flight of the family to the refuge of the Communist Partisans. Goldstein’s father, however, vanished into the regime’s prison camps, a mystery Goldstein investigates amid a recollection of how his friends, schoolmates, and neighbors in his hometown, Karlovac, responded to the Ustasha regime and its persecutions of Jews and Serbs. Representing a range from fanatical nationalists to cynical opportunists, this gallery of Goldstein’s acquaintances captures the atmosphere of genocide on a chillingly interpersonal scale. Meeting some such people decades later at a book trade convention, Goldstein matter-of-factly remarks on their avoidance of the truth of 1941’s massacres in Croatia. Based on his personal story, Goldstein’s brave reconstruction of the massacres and their successor atrocities in 1945 and the 1990s should be added to the Holocaust shelf. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
"A chilling personal account of the deep-seated terror and ethnic violence underpinning the pub bet stage of Croatia during World War II… A stunning work that looks frankly at the ‘roots of evil'.”  —Kirkus Reviews

"In this ambitious mix of history and memoir, Goldstein, a Croatian writer, looks back at WWII and its effects on his life, family, and neighbors….Goldstein covers a lot of territory as he explores the vicious ethnic warfare between Serbs and Croats from 1941 onward and looks at how the Nazi pogrom further affected his country’s Jewish community….It’s a poignant, uncompromising recollection, told in a meandering but easy-to-follow manner…. Goldstein’s book, reconstructed through personal experience as well as numerous interviews and historical documents provides invaluable insight into Croatia during WWII." —Publishers Weekly

“I came across this remarkable book, which has not yet been translated into English, while writing recently about the wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. It deserves attention because it explains, perhaps better than any book I know of, how different ethnic groups, who lived side by side in peace for centuries, were made to turn against one another and become each other’s executioners in that unhappy country.” —Charles Simic

“Here at last is a memoir whose author readily admits that his childhood recollections are not necessarily crystal clear, but who has made up for the inevitable obscurities with assiduous research and thorough interviews so as to rank it among the greatest writings on the witches’ cauldron that was Hitler’s Europe in 1941. The focus is on Croatia where, under the command of the satanic Ustasha fascists, neighbors denounced, robbed, and killed neighbors, but Slavko Goldstein’s 1941 could be applied to every country where war and foreign occupation turned hitherto harmless people into bandits.” —István Deák, Seth Low Professor Emeritus of History, Columbia University

“Goldstein, 63, keeps up a formidable pace. Besides editing Erasmus and directing its parent research institute, the Erasmus Guild, he heads an independent publishing house, sits on the council of the Zagreb Jewish Community, and appears frequently on local television and radio programs. In a sense, Goldstein’s activism dates back to 1941, the year the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia and installed a puppet regime, the Ustasha, to run Croatia for them.” —The Jerusalem Report

“Goldstein’s book is at once autobiography and family chronicle, a testimonial and a historical record, a work of literature. Simply, lucidly, it recounts the private life of a family and the public life of a city, the reign of the Independent State of Croatia and World War II, the suffering and the camps, and the postwar tragedies that mirror the past.” —Zarez (Croatia)

“Based on personal memories and historical research, Goldstein has spun—as if from coils of yarn of good and evil—a singular history of twentieth-century tragedies.” —Novi List (Croatia)

“A monumental work.” —Slobodna Dalmacija (Croatia)

Probably best and most readable description of Croatia's history from 1941-1995 that I ever read
By Brooklyn resident
Disclosure: Born in Croatia in the 60-ties in a Catholic family (with some distant members married to Serbs and others scattered throughout former Yugoslavia), I grew up in West Germany, returned to Croatia about a decade before another war erupted, and in Brooklyn, NY since before the war ended in 1995. Voted only one time in multiparty elections, in 1990, and it happened to be for HSLS, which was cofounded by the author. Do not know him and never met him at the time of this writing. Ordered Croatian version of book, but read and completed the English Kindle version.

It is very hard to classify and pinpoint this book. It is part autobiography, part biography of his father, part detailed documentary chronicle of events of 1941-1945 of the Karlovac region (and beyond) of Croatia, part history of the Holocaust in Croatia.

The style is meandering, but linking together places, people and events spanning decades, and describing the most difficult and contentious times of Croatia's recent history in a factual, honest and I would dare say personally courageous way. I see Croatia still as a place where emotions run very high when it comes to certain topics, and the author has poked his stick into the vasp nests of every contentious topic that lets the blood boil on every political side (left, right or center).

One of the most remarkable quality of the book is his ability, rare by Croatian, Yugoslav and probably Balkan standards, to describe events from various points of view, making them look less black and white, with lots of gray and even color mixed into it.

I was surprised to find that many of the stories of my parents and grandparents about the difficult WW2 period in Northern Croatia in a region closer to the Hungarian border sounded very similar to what I found in this book written about Karlovac, which convinced me that the author has done his best to be truthful and complete in his description of events of this time.

For a Croatian kid interested in history, but growing up on one-sided stories from either one or the other side, this book is priceless and in my middle age explains to me things from the 1930-ties to today like nothing else I ever read in a book about this region.

I truly hope that in my lifetime this book will be made obligatory reading for Croatian high school students.

For the non-Croatian/Yugoslav/Balkan among the readers this book may be a little more difficult to follow than to someone like me. There are many interesting descriptions of life before, during and after the war in that part of Croatia, of life in the Partisan guerrilla fighters in Yugoslavia in WW2, etc.

One of the remarkable aspects of this book is the detailed description of the fate of many of Croatia's Jewish residents, and their options at the time, which, though they were affected by the Holocaust, had the remarkable alternative to join the resistance and fight the murderers of their people, and be in the end victorious. The author's mother made that choice and saved her and her sons' life.

I could go on and on in describing what else this book contains, and suffice it to say that I doubt that a foreign reader will find all portions of the book equally interesting, but for readers wanting to understand the Balkans in the 20th century this book should be required reading, as it comes from an eyewitness to critical events who is very objective in his approach, detail oriented and as complete as possible.

I am waiting for the Croatian edition of the book and may post an update later on commenting on additional aspects of the book.

Well researched and documented book. Somewhat selective in telling "the whole truth"
By Milan Gacesa
I was born in what is now Croatia to parents of Serbian heritage one year before "NDH" was proclaimed. In our immediate family we lost 2 people to the "cleansing" campaign. It is impossible to convey the horrors of such a campaign, but the book makes a reasonable effort to do so, perhaps understandably choosing to bypass the most gruesome practices of the "cleansers". I have known, for many years, the woman mentioned in the book, Dara Skoric, but she is reluctant, more than 70 years later, to talk about the specifics of the events that lead to her capture and escape. At the beginning of the book the author mentions the number of people of Serbian heritage lost, but does not make an effort to substantiate that number in the remainder of the book. He goes to great lengths to substantiate 'a number' in each specific example where atrocities happened, e.g.: Glina, etc., but does not return to the claimed total number. The author's efforts to equate Chetniks and Ustashe is curious, although in the eyes of a Parizan that may be understandable or necessary in his environment today. During my early school years, in Communist Yugoslavia, my best friend, Mile Chubelic, was a boy whose mother was of Serbian descent and father was of Croatian decent. Mile and I were separated in 1954 when I emigrated from Yugoslavia, and were not in regular contact, but met on occasion when I returned for visits. In 1992 Mile was rounded up together with more than 100 other 'undesirables' (presumably because he was only 50% of Croatian blood) and massacred in Gospic by Croatian nationalists. The parallels of 1941 and 1992-95 are only alluded to in the book, which is understandable because the book is about 1941. However, there was a great opportunity lost in showing the common roots of the two campaigns.

It is hoped that the author will follow-up this excellent book with other material from the same period and the same region, especially documentation of the most recent tragic events in that region. I wholeheartedly agree with another reviewer who says that this book should be made required reading for high school students in Croatia.

Light in the Darkness
By Amazon Customer
Thank you, Slavko Goldstein, for a magnificent, meticulous contribution to clarifying the fog that has engulfed my understanding of the period 1941-1950 in Croatia. I would have given it five stars except for the omission of all but passing reference to Alois Stepinac. So, we are still left to wonder--saint or sinner and to what degree. As a person whose roots are from Veljun, this is a signifocant omission. Otherwise, I intensely read the entire work over nearly one continuous reading over two days. I would have read on and on if there were more. My own feelings about the situation to a degree mirror those of this meticulous observer. His accounts very much corroborate much of my family's "folk" history of the times. I have read the accounts of Glase von Horstenau many years ago, and I was able to follow the events of 1991-1995 through the use of official UNPROFÓR maps sent to me through unofficial channels. It may be true, as Tolstoy said, that historians answer the questions no one ever asked, but it is not true about Slavko's fine piece of work. Thank you again, Mr. Goldstein. I cannot express how much you have helped shed light on a dark, murky period. Understanding without blaming is so very hard to do.
