About the Author
Hilda Loughran is Lecturer in Social Work at University College Dublin, Ireland, and has taught crisis intervention for over 15 years. Her areas of interest include social work education, counselling and research, and drugs and alcohol misuse, including the use of crisis intervention. She has published widely in these areas, and has been engaged in policy and practice research for many years.

Reads like a College Research Paper

The information presented in this book was concise and up-to-date, written in APA style format throughout the text. I couldn't help but wonder if it is the end product of a research project from a college student.

The material is presented well, with sub-catagories of various methods therapists use to treat clients short term when a crisis affects their emotional health. Each sub-category began with a history of that type of therapy, when it was first used, and how effective it generally is.

The author used an impressive amounts multiple references which are listed in APA format, in the index.

The material presented will be helpful for a student or young professional, but would be difficult for a layperson to follow, which is why I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5. This book would be a wonderful resourse tool for someone who is attempting to develop a large research project in an APA format.

Although I did not purchase the book through Amazon, I did receive my copy through paperbackswap, and plan to make it a permanent part of my library.

Great little book with a ton of information

I bought Loughran's book Understanding Crisis Therapies to augment material for a social work practice class I am teaching this fall. This book is full of information that will be useful for my needs, but also for students and practitioners. Loughran traces the history of crisis intervention and examines how various intervention theories/models utilize this method. She provides case studies and in particular also looks at how different theories would apply to and work with the same case, which is very helpful. She also does a good job of summerizing background on the theories that set the groundwork for understanding how crisis intervention is applied. I particularly appreciate the integrative model in the last chapter. Loughran also provides detailed information on intervening with suicide and with intimate partner violence. This may become required reading for my students.

As an educator who had worked with students with Asperger's, I was delighted to read 'Trueman Bradley - Aspie Detective'. The novel was not only a fun read, it provides tremendous insight into the world as seen through the eyes and understanding of a young man with Asperger's. It's a story where ability triumphs over disability. Trueman's incredible gift, to understand the world through his complex math formulas, his penchant for innovation and invention to implement his formulas and solve problems, are incredible triumphs for a young man who has struggled to fit in and find simple comforts in the complex environment in which he functions.

It also portrays the reality of stigma and the lack of understanding that people hold for what remains for many a misunderstood and mysterious disorder. My copy of 'Trueman Bradley' is very dog eared because it has been read by all my family and many of my friends and we all love it... In addition to being a writer, he is an advocate for building awareness concerning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and his interest in AS inspired him to create Trueman Bradley, a positive role model and hero for those with AS. He hopes the book will help people to understand that AS is not a disability, it is a different way of thinking and not a "wrong" way of thinking.  Alexei lives in Winnipeg, Canada.

A modern hero

Written in the voice of a person with Asperger's Syndrome Trueman Bradly: Aspie Detective is a modern hero. This book is suitable for readers from young adult onwards, and I think it would translate well into an animated movie along the lines of The Invincibles.

A fun and creative story

Lots of wonderful dialogue and characterization. This guy is great at capturing the anguish of a man with Asperger's Syndrome who has great talent and grand dreams he wants to realize, but who has yet to overcome his confusion about the behavior of humans and the use of language.

The premise of the book is outlandish but fascinating: the main character devises a sort of Unified Field Equation of crime-solving, based on records of crimes throughout history. It's highly reliable at identifying perpetrators, but on an emotional level, the man who created the equation doesn't truly understand the variables he's studying, the details of human life that motivate crimes and aid in solving them. In his attempts to pitch his research to the police force, he comes up against so many heart-wrenching exchanges that reading the book is something of an emotional adventure.

A Balanced Look At Common Pre-Death Experiences

For anyone with a family member facing death, this book is wonderfully helpful. Author Mary Sanders collected a number of anecdotal reports, along with accepted death statistics, making a well-balanced book that's easy to read.
My 94-yr-old Mom recently passed peacefully at home following a week of witnessing deceased loved ones in her bedroom. I never doubted her for a second, she was not taking any pain-relieving drugs, or any prescription pills. She described what each person was wearing, including surprise at her long-deceased father sporting a full head of black hair! He had been bald all her life.
My Mom's last 2 mornings in this world she reported hearing "a choir of people singing what I think was opera". She convinced my brother to go outside the house to see if he could hear it, & this was mid-winter in New England with storm windows on the house.

I almost couldn't stop reading this book and it has really opened my understanding!

This is a very good book that helped me to understand what my loved ones who past away within the past 9 and 10 months have went through. This book is truly a God send to me while I am experiencing grief because of missing them so much. I know that I will be able to see them again and this book confirms which I already knew from reading the Bible that there is life after death. When we all take our final breaths in these fragile earthly bodies we then continue to live in one or two places.....but before we leave these bodies behind we have one foot in the spiritual world and one foot in the physical realm. This book really helped me to understNd what I was witnessing before my very eyes with my family members that just recently passed.

Wow. If only the book was available years ago...
This book will help equip all of us better and aide those we sit bedside with as they prepare to die.
Through sharing various examples of NDA's, we can begin to recognize and better understand what really is going on in the transition to death.

Lovely Book

This is a lovely book, inspiring whether you sew or just love simple French-style decorating. The projects, everything from totes, a berry-basket liner, a lavender-filled cushion or large sachet, an apron, napkins and various pillows to a scalloped tablecloth, bed skirt, shower curtain and more, range from beginner to advanced skill level, though the advanced don't even seem that difficult, and an envelope of patterns and iron-on embroidery transfers inside the front cover make things even easier. If you don't have a stash of old fabrics (and you certainly can use new), there are resources listed in the back of the book, along with notes on care of vintage fabrics and general sewing and embroidery techniques. Beautiful photos and clear directions.

Stunning Book

This is an absolutely stunningly presented book, and I would buy it just for the presentation, even if it didn't have any patterns. The pattern sheets are in a beautiful envelope pocket inside the front cover and are good and large - not the size one usually gets with a book. The book 'inside' the covers is spiral bound - great for referring to as you sew. But the pattterns and ideas are fairly simple, although I do love the idea of the Hanging Notions Organizer. As the name suggests, it is French style and to enjoy the book you must have a liking for this look.

Ooo La La!

Kaari's charming style blossoms in the pages of her new book! The look is flawless, simple European. With a little basic sewing you can bring a bit of French style to your own maison (home). You don't have to be an accomplished seamstress to get the job done, either. The projects vary from basics (sachets & napkins & bags) to floor pillows, throws & duvets, and Roman shades (and so much more!). There are even several cute patterns for items that would make great gift giving. Plus, resource guide listed in back and general techniques are included for beginners.

I sew quite a bit, so I can see making many of these projects. The patterns are adaptable and straight forward. You could easily use vintage French fabrics (find great fabrics at Meng's FrenchGeneral.com) or even go with contemporary patterns (think Amy Butler or Fresh Cut) to show off a different look. The book is spiral bound, which makes it easy keep open while working on a project. The pictures are inspiring, deserving of a French decor magazine themselves. Fun!

A strong narrative with plenty of tension, twists and turns, with absorbing and interesting characters. Bookbag The scenery is vast and brilliantly described... touches of horror, fantasy and mythology. The author has a good handle on building tension, creating suspense and inserting humour into this fun quick read for older teenagers. The School Librarian

Not sure what to think

I LOVED Anna Dressed in Blood. It was creepy, unique, heartbreaking, and so well written that it was hard not to fall in love with it. In comparison, I wasn't such a huge fan of the sequel in that duo. Regardless, I still had high hopes for Antigoddess.

I'm really not sure what to think. Interesting concept (I love my Greek mythology), but so-so execution. My attention wandered quite often, to the point where I would put the book down, go do something else, and not want to continue reading. It took weeks for me to finish this.

Characters, like the execution, left me feeling kind of meh. They didn't grab my attention, and I didn't connect with them. I'm bummed, because I really wanted to like this story. I think my lackluster review reflects my perception of Antigoddess. Not much to say, because it didn't leave much of an impression.

ANTIGODDESS is a book I wanted to read ever since I heard about it. I love twists on Greek mythology, and I thought the gods dying would be a gigantic twist. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

Fast forward to me actually starting the book. Within a few chapters, my excitement died down, much like Athena's slow death from the feathers growing inside her lungs. The book started out with Athena and Hermes making a painful journey across the desert to find Demeter, and then getting in a fight with Poseidon's minions. Good stuff, but ... there was something off for me, and that off feeling only got worse the more I read.

In ANTIGODDESS, I just couldn't connect with any of the characters. From Athena to Cassandra, they fell flat. Like they were two dimensional stereotypes instead of fleshed out and developed characters. I don't have to care about every character when I read a book, but I want to get emotionally invested in at least one or two of them. Kendare Blake wasn't afraid to hurt her characters (which was a plus), but when very bad stuff happened to them, it didn't have any impact for me because I didn't care about them.

ANTIGODDESS also crawled along at a snail's pace for me. I really wanted to like this book, but I had to keep making myself pick it up. Every bookworm knows that magical feeling of wanting to read straight through until a book is done, but I never had it with ANTIGODDESS. I think the pace was slow for a couple of reasons. One, the book is written in third-person, mainly from the viewpoints of Athena and Cassandra. Athena would have an action scene, and then it would jump to Cassandra doing something super normal, like having lunch with her friends. It was disjointed for me. Two, in ANTIGODDESS, the events of the Trojan war are pretty important. I didn't remember much about it, so that pulled me out of the story, trying to put connections together.

I know I've mentioned quite a few negatives, but there were a couple of things I liked about ANTIGODDESS. The relationship between Cassandra and Aidan was one of them. Aidan was a sweet guy, unlike a lot of the bad guy love interests you see in young adult books. There's a big secret in their relationship, though, and I'm not going to spoil it -- but I LOVED that the author went there. That was probably one of the highlights of the book for me.

A Phenomenal First Book in an Amazing New Series!

'Antigoddess' is the outstanding first book in a new young adult fantasy series that brings Greek gods and goddesses into the 21st century. Gods are supposed to be immortal - so why are they dying? Athena is being slowing choked by the feathers of her owls and Hermes is withering away before her eyes. They don't understand what's happening to them or how to stop it, so they go on a journey to discover the truth. Along the way, they meet up with other gods and goddesses facing the same excruciating deaths. It appears that Hera, queen of the gods, has gone insane and has made an alliance with Poseidon and Aphrodite in an effort to kill the other gods in order to save themselves. A full on war between the Olympian gods is about to begin in the midst of unsuspecting mortals. The only hope that Athena and her friends have is the reincarnation of a powerful prophetess, Cassandra, who is much more than she seems. With Cassandra's help, will Athena and her friends be able to stop the war from happening or will they all end up dead?

This is the first book I've read by the author and it far surpassed any and all expectations I may have had for it. From the very first paragraph, it sucked me into its pages and didn't let up until the end. I loved that the ancient Greek gods and goddesses were updated and brought into the 21st century. It made them more fascinating and yet easy to identify with as characters. I enjoyed learning about their lives, both past and present, and the history of all the Olympians. The entire cast of characters was incredibly well written with distinct personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and hopes and fears. Each and every one of the characters in the book made an impression on me and I felt like I almost knew them myself. The plot was compelling and had me eagerly turning the pages to see what was going to happen. There's several story lines in the book that go on alongside the main plot, but these only served to enhance the story and gave it more depth. The idea of ancient Greek gods and goddesses waging war in the modern world was compelling and the author wrote about it with such finesse that it seemed like I was right alongside the characters throughout the story. The writing itself was phenomenal with a fast pace, vivid imagery, and detailed descriptions that had me enchanted from the start. There's so much going on and so many different directions that the series can take - I can't wait to see where the next book will take us. Highly recommended for fans of YA fantasy and mythology retellings as well as anyone looking for a great book that stands apart from the rest of the genre.

A total of 113 older adults with dementia, living in aged-care facilities, participated in this study described in this book... the book describes, different views of ageing in our society... By examining concepts of spirituality and transcendence in later life, they explore ageing as a spiritual journey... Elizabeth MacKinlay is a registered nurse and an Anglican priest. She is Director of the Centre for Ageing and Pastoral Studies at St Mark's National Theological Centre, Canberra, and a Professor in the School of Theology, Charles Sturt University. Elizabeth was Chair of the ACT Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing in 2008 and was the ACT Senior Australian of the Year for 2009. Corinne Trevitt is a registered nurse and Academic Associate Centre for Ageing and Pastoral Studies in the School of Theology, Charles Sturt University, Australia. Corinne has worked in Australia and the United Kingdom and has a background in nursing, research and teaching with an emphasis on issues of ageing. Corinne has published in the areas of spirituality for older adults with dementia and clinical teaching strategies.
