About the Author
Charlie Mortimer was born in 1952 and educated at Wellesley House, Broadstairs and (reluctantly) Eton. He has been, among other things, an officer in the Coldstream Guards, a vintage car restorer, an estate agent, a roughneck on an oil rig, a pop group manager, a mechanic in Africa, a manufacturer of boxer shorts and an antiques dealer. He currently describes himself as a 'middle aged, middle class spiv (mostly retired)'

cracked heads

lordy lord, would that americans would be infected by the plague of common sense, wit, flippancy and directness of the most lovely and mad of isles, England. This book proves, rather conclusively, that the world would be more pleasant if the baby boomers had listened to and obeyed their parents. huzzah for the WW2 generation with its silence, smoking, drinking and general carrying on. no hugs just get on with.

An exasperated father

Roger Mortimer's letters to his son, Charlie, written over a period of twenty five years, are full of gems such as "In those happy days we had a chauffeur called Percy Samuel Woods who committed suicide by lying face downwards in a large puddle. Talk about doing things the hard way!" or "Unfortunately I am rapidly becoming senile and my general health is deteriorating rather fast. Old age is full of surprises, most of them unpleasant, and is rather like being punished for a crime one has never committed".

Always supportive, even when disapproving of his wild child, Roger Mortimer's intelligence, literacy and profound love for his son shine out from this delightful collection of letters.

This would make a wonderful present for anyone with an interest in family relationships, a sense of humour or a soft spot for the Pooter family.

What a lovely Dad

Absolutely marvellous. A cross between PG Wodehouse and the obituaries of colourful military men. The novel is epistolary - letters from Roger Mortimer to his son Charles. Charles is a reprobate , but the affection his father has for him, his tolerance, his irony, his humour and his love are palpable. It is just so funny, and Roger is a lovely man.
it also gives us an inkling of upper middle class society in the 50's.
I am going to recommend it to all my friends. i loved it.

Great detail on Thai culture and sites, could have better locational information

We took this guide with us on our honeymoon to Thailand and visited Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. The information for Bangkok and the cultural sites there was pretty comprehensive and we referred to it frequently for ideas on what to see and where to eat. The information for Chiang Mai and Koh Samui was also good with respect to the "what to see" part, but we found the restaurant recommendations to be more touristy or kinda dated in those locations. Maybe this was personal preference, though. Our biggest complaint was that the maps could have included more of the places mentioned in the book, especially when it came to the shopping locations covered in each city. The guide discusses multiple places to go, but gives fairly vague descriptions of the locations, such as a street name- which occasionally turned out to be a very long street with few markers or indications of where exactly we were trying to go. The guide did give addresses for the hotels and restaurants/nightlife and depicted those on seperate maps for each city, but it would have been really helpful if they had also depicted the stores and/or shopping sections on the maps or given addresses as well since those proved to be the hardest to locate. Overall, it was a decent guide for basic info, but the maps and locational information could be better.

Incorrect information led to much confusion

Some of the maps and information is incorrect. This caused much confusion in Chiang Rai and Yangon. You cannot walk all the way around Inya Lake as the book says (we were lost for an hour.) The lake in Yangon that you can walk all the way around is Kandawgyi Lake.

Failed attempt to be Eyewitness and LP at once.

Thought it was a good idea to buy a guide to covers both Thailand and Cambodia as I will be visiting places in both countries in the near future. However, after receiving this guide and flipping through it I actually think it was a bad idea to buy this guide.
Sure, the guide touches upon most sights in Cambodia and Thailand and has many great full color photographs, but for my purposes (city travel in Bangkok, beach life in Phuket, and visiting Angkor Wat in Cambodia) it does a poor job.
Firs of all, almost half of the contents of the guide is devoted to lodging and dining. Sorry, but I am not longer a backpacker and have all hotels booked already. Secondly, I prefer to wander around the neighborhoods and see what restaurants I might encounter. No need for a guide to list that ("telephone book" anyone?)
Third, the city maps of Bangkok are pretty bad and the sites mentioned in the text are hard or almost impossible to find on the tiny maps. Fourth, there was no map of Phuket and scant information on beach/water activities.

In the end, I decided to just go with Eyewitness Thailand for Bangkok travel as they have the same great photographs but provide much higher quality maps and a better background section. Not to mention less emphasis on hotels and dining.
For Phuket I think the pocket guide from LP will work fine, while Angor Wat will be done without a guidebook.

Richard Bromfield, PhD, is a graduate of Bowdoin College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A faculty member of Harvard Medical School, he writes about children, psychotherapy, and family life in both professional and popular periodicals. He is in private practice in Boston, Massachusetts.

The best book on this topic

Every now and then you come across a book that has a profound impact on your life and this is one such book.
On the topic of Asperger's Syndrome this is the best book there is. Period. (imho).
Dr. Bromfield has provided us with amazing insight into Asperger's and how it affects the life of those with this syndrome. And his message in the book is one of hope, encouragement and possibilities.
His methods and approach are not revolutionary, and nor do they exclude other approaches and treatment modalities. But he is not afraid to say something is wrong when it is.
His insights are profound and are based on his many years of practice and are valuable not only for the Asperger's sub-population but but for humanity in general. If we could all spend
some time trying to understand where other people are coming from - this world would be a better place.
Each chapter ends with direct practical advice for parents and teachers- which are worth reading over and over again. His style of writing is easy and engaging and the material is readily understood.
At its heart the message is one of building a strong relationship and trust and understanding with the Asperger's child which can then provide fertile ground for growth and progress. The how and why are described so well in the book - I found myself nodding and underling whole sections as I read.
Thank you Dr. Bromfield for writing this important book on the subject and I hope many families will be blessed by reading this.

A book for all involved who live with Huntington's Disease!

So many people have written rave reviews to the Sulaiman's and the publisher on this book, I was surprised not to see any posted under Amazon's book review!

Huntington's Disease has been so intricately entwined into the fabric of my life since the early 1980's when my only child, Kelly, was diagnosed with the Juvenile form of this devastating disease. Throughout Kelly's life, and since her death at age 30 to complications of JHD in 1998, I have been deeply involved in trying to help families living with Huntington's Disease by providing resources and support where I can. "Learning to Live With Huntington's Disease: One Family's Story" is one of the best non-fictional books on HD to be written since Carman Leal's "Faces of Huntington's" was published in 1998! Whether you are a professional involved in providing support to HD families, a person diagnosed with HD, a young person growing up in an HD family, a person at-risk for inheriting the disease, a friend or a relative of a family living with HD, or a spouse thrown into the role of a "caregiver" in an HD family, each chapter in this book not only will touch your heart but will provide you with insight on how this disease affects every single aspect of the life of anyone who is living with HD!

The Emotional Side of HD

This short book is a very poignant insight into how HD affects every member of a family. Most of the family members are not writers by profession, but you can't criticize them for speaking from their hearts. It's a devastating story to tell, and we should all be grateful that people like the Sulaimans are willing to share it. But in the end, it's important to know that this book is not a medical text and describes but one family's struggle. If you are looking for a more informative, well-rounded explanation, or if you want to know the cold, hard facts (such as physical symptoms, disease progression, prognosis, etc.), then this book is not a great starting point.

As I have said in other reviews, the body of knowledge on HD is nearly nonexistent. Oliver Quarrell's book, Huntington's Disease (The Facts), is probably the most concise introduction, and the few books authored by and about the Wexler family offer an interesting historical and personal perspective (Mapping Fate: A Memoir of Family, Risk, and Genetic Research; The Woman Who Walked into the Sea: Huntington's and the Making of a Genetic Disease; and Gene Hunter: The Story of Neuropsychologist Nancy Wexler (Women's Adventures in Science), which, although written for young adults, is advanced enough for grown-up readers as well). And of course, the consummate resource for the latest medical information on HD remains the Huntington's Disease Lighthouse, an indispensable website to which Amazon refuses to let me post a link.

Great source of strength to keep close by!

I am like Sandy; HD positive except my symptoms have not begun yet. I soaked up every word she wrote. She is funny, real and left me wanting to read more of her writings. The book is written by her and her family. Each person has shared insight into the relationship they have with Sandy and the affects of the (mostly rediculous and unfair) Huntington's Disease. It contains a wide range of perspective from caregivers' insight and resources for strength to her at-risk childern speaking frankly about their decision to have genetic testing done (or not). Her HD negative sister shares her experiences as well.
Favorites about the book:
Her husband speaks about finding "faith" not hope. It reasonated and I will keep this with me.
Wish list for the book: Sandy, more Sandy! I wanted to read more of HER writings. (yes Sandy you are GOOD!)

I keep this book with me (or close by). When I'm feeling strong I reread some parts. When I'm not so strong and need a lift, I re-read her husbands section on finding faith that everything will be alright.

A book written by real people sharing such personal details about their lives.

Alexander C. Wagenaar, PhD, is a professor of health outcomes and policy at the University of Florida College of Medicine, and associate director of the Public Health Law Research program, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Christmas is Turning Out to be Prankful

The weekend before Christmas, Michael is awakened by his new beeper. He's joined the local volunteer fire department, and they're being called to the Baptist church. Only when they arrive, they find out that it wasn't a fire - someone had left a bunch of skunks in the choir loft.

Meg is drafted to work out schedules to allow the services and concerts of the Baptists and the other churches in the area to go on as planned but with new locations since the Baptist church is unusable until they get the smell out, but things don't improve when another prank hits another church the next night. Who is behind it all? And what might the motive be? Things become even more urgent when a body is found in one church's basement.

Those who follow this series will quickly note that this is the second Christmas entry in the long running cozy series, and there are some references in this one that recall the traditions the first one centered around. This book is all new, and Meg and Michael's twins weren't around the last time either, which gives this book a feeling of being new.

And it is pure delight as always. Meg and her family are charming as ever, and the events unfold at a great pace. The book never lost my interest once. I did figure out the ending early on, but I didn't have all the pieces in place, although they all made sense. The twins add a great new dimension to the book; as always, they totally steal their scenes.

Fans will love this Christmas visit with Meg. In fact, anyone who wants a light, comedic mystery to put them in the Christmas spirit will love this book.

I love Meg and her family, unconditionally

Are the later books as laugh out loud funny as Peacocks, Puffins, etc? Maybe not but a lot of that is familiarity. In the same way that Lucy wasn't always at the top of her game, the Watterson-Langslows aren't either. But they are warm, loving, more than a tad bit crazy and I wait anxiously and eagerly for the next offering. Ducks didn't disappoint. One thing I would like to see is a bit more of Michael. The older the twins get, the less involved Michael is in Meg's daily routine and I do think that hurts the books some. The mystery doesn't really matter to me I am just happy to be invited to the next family get together....

Christmas Magic!

This is Donna Andrews second Holiday book. Meg and Michael's twin boys are 3 or 4, Michael and Rob have joined the volunteer fire department and Meg does what she does best: organize.
She has to find places for the New Life Baptist Choir to rehearse and perform their Christmas concert after the choirloft is skunked, The Catholic Church is out due to an influx of ducks in the sanctuary (around 100 of them). Trinity Episcopalian (or is it Anglican?) hosts the concerts until a burned body is found in the undercroft.
Being Christmas, we get Michael' Dickens performance, competing dinners and lots of love.

IDEA OF COMMUNICATING WITH FLOW CHARTS INTERESTING

I think this book rambles too much for me and didn't keep me interested. Made me start to think I had a problem cause I couldn't stay focused. After several attempts to get through it, I gave up and threw it away.

Great book even with one caveat

I found this book to be an eye opening experience. I was diagnosed two years ago with Asperger's and it has made me more conscience of the challenges I will/face.

In particular, interactions with the "fairer sex". I used to view women as over-emotional, mercurial and irrational. This book clearly clarified that mistaken impression.

I now have an idea as to "her" side of things. Overall, this is an excellent book. Its not one of those "how to pick up chicks" or so clinical that you can't really understand what they're saying.

The book is framed in the manner of a couples counseling session with each chapter answer a question which came out of real cases.

One of these was a question relaying an incident where the NT spouse catches the AS partner with porn and is threatening divorce. I found her solution that even after the AS partner stops looking at porn, tries to make things right and the NT spouse still won't have sex their AS partner that the only solution is to accept a sexless marriage/relationship.

This just isn't realistic at all and I think her emotions got the better of her on this one. There just wasn't any compromise like there was in the other solutions. No maybe they should make their own movie or talking about it; just accept never having sex again. I mean Aston writes about this as if the NT spouse found out her AS partner was a serial killer or a homosexual (not that there's anything wrong with being gay). Aside from this caveat, READ THIS BOOK.
