In the early morning hours of April 1, 1970, more than four hundred North Vietnamese soldiers charged out into the open and tried to over-run FSB Illingworth. The battle went on, mostly in the dark, for hours. The following quote is from the "Author's Notes" at the beginning of the book and pretty much sums up my feelings about this story, the incredible warriors who took part in it, and my reasons for writing the book:
"What the soldiers in this story did at Illingworth, as I shall try and show, was nothing short of miraculous. More than just beating back a determined assault, they performed numerous acts of incredible bravery. An outfit cobbled together, composed of disparate units that had never worked in unison, defeated the best efforts of a crack regiment of front-line North Vietnamese troops--and did it while being outnumbered by at least two-to-one. That, to me, is pretty impressive. I would like to help these veterans better understand their place in the Vietnam narrative and to show the rest of the world how these courageous Americans reacted to incredibly bad combat odds and still managed to succeed."
About the Author
Phil has a degree in History from Harvard and has done Masters work at the Naval War College, U. C. Berkeley, and Long Island University. After graduation from Harvard Phil went directly into the Navy and became a Naval Aviator. During three tours in Vietnam Phil served with distinction and was awarded, among other decorations, the Air Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Commendation Medal. After his wartime service he rose to the rank of Captain in the Naval Reserve. As a business executive he worked for two Fortune 500 firms holding several senior positions in sales and marketing. He was also a CEO for three technology firms all specializing in educational software products. In 1999 Phil was selected for the Executive in Residence Program at Long IslandUniversity's Business Division and for the next six years taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in business at LIU, Southampton. In 2007 Phil accepted an assignment to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Phil is a columnist for the Southampton Press, a magazine feature writer, and has published two fictional novels and is working on a third. His latest book is a best-selling work of non-fiction for St. Martin's Press entitled "Blackhorse Riders," a book about Vietnam. His next book, also from St. Martin's Press, is entitled: "Fire Base Illingworth," and will be released 10-26-2013. He serves on the Planning Board for the Town of Southampton and lives in Southampton, with his partner Laura and son Pierce.

I was there!

Good read as was his first book, a few things were not as I saw them but then that was 40 + years ago. A great read non the less, the men (boys) were so brave and so young. Some of my friends died that night which hurts even today. I wonder what they would have become had they been given the chance.
I believe these stories should be told and the men not forgotten.

Epic True Story - Input from a Brother

I anxiously awaited the arrival of this book because of the personal connection our family has with FB Illingworth. My brother, Rojer J. McInerny, Jr. was among those killed on April 1, 1970. Roger is mentioned on page 227. In the book, Rog's death was described as the result of being, "...blown away by a rocket..." According to official Army records, Roger received the Purple Heart, Bronze & Silver Star, among other in-country medals. The following is from the official citation for the Silver Star:

For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with a armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, Private First Class McInerny distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 1 April 1970, while serving as a rifleman in the Republic of Vietnam. As the base camp came under a heavy rocket, mortar and ground attack, Private First Class McInerny immediately moved to the perimeter to place effective fire on the advancing enemy forces. When incoming rounds ignited the ammunition dump, although only a few meters from the certain explosion, he continued to repel the aggressors with small arms fire. After his weapon malfunctioned, he fought the hostiles with hand-to-hand combat in a valiant effort to defend the base. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Mr. Keith apparently came across conflicting information regarding Roger's death that our family was/is not privy to. I have copies of all Roger's citations and there is no mention of being struck by an enemy rocket. His body was returned to our family and my dad and I identified Rog. He was buried with full military honors and now rests at Fort Snelling, MN.
To some, this might seem like a petty discrepancy, after all, it is but one paragraph in the entire book. But for me this is a slap in the face for our family. For someone of Keith's calibre, the information on Roger's citations could have easily been obtained and verified. And for all his educational background and command of the English language, Mr. Keith's choice of words to describe Roger's death was that he was, "blown away." I'm sure my parents and siblings will be as impressed as I was.

Outstanding true war story serves as instruction and a sacred memorial

This gripping story tells about the concerns and events of a firebase in Vietnam toward the end of our war there. The story itself is riveting; I was motivated to continue to the last page and will probably read it again. There are lessons within the story about life, war and command structures.
Right from the beginning I knew this was one of the best books in the genre, and I've read many of these books since before I learned to drive. The author takes a lot of care to explain what and how the combat engineers did to prepare a firebase. He also explained what those that manned the artillery did, and made me appreciate how undermanned those batteries were in that war.
Personally I found the book to be a profound wake up call. I had already developed a good understanding from our recent wars of the gap in personal interests between politicians and the soldiers that serve in actual war conditions. The author revealed how the military and government at first kept details about this battle secret. Over 400 North Vietnam regulars, experienced soldiers, stormed the firebase and some of them penetrated it and fought hand-to-hand with Americans that were used as bait.
A key question still unanswered is who was responsible for placing useless large artillery pieces along with a large supply of shells for the big guns inside a firebase that wasn't "hardened." It's clear this was done to provide convincing evidence to that North Vietnamese of the vulnerability and relatively high value of this small firebase. The Americans within were, as the author stated, used as pawns and successfully traded for bigger enemy pieces.
The North Vietnamese soldiers that were ordered to overrun Fire Base Illingworth were sent to their death, in most cases. These experienced and dedicated soldiers were sacrificed in a vain attempt to overrun the base for propaganda purposes. Soldiers on both sides were sacrificed. The Americans wanted to seriously degrade one of the fittest enemy fighting groups, and they succeeded. The North Vietnamese wanted a propaganda victory for overrunning the base, and they failed.
There was a massive explosion on that base when the big artillery shells were blown sky high. It must have felt like success to the North Vietnamese officers that were watching from a safe distance. But it was part of the American side's plan to set that situation up and let it happen. This book helps memorialize the sacrifices made by honorable young Americans that bravely fought back enemy forces through the night.
