Don't start this one unless you have time to finish it - you won't want to put it down.

My thoughts:
This was my first Stephanie Feagan read - and I LOVED it! Found myself lost in the book from the first page. I lost all track of time as I turned the pages of this fast-paced, action-packed, suspenseful romance.
The characters are robust and engaging. The storyline is original, interesting and entertaining. The plot is mysterious and thoughtfully created. The romance is both hot and sweet.
I found myself occasionally laughing out loud as well as smiling and sighing because the characters are so great.
Well worth the read.

4.5 Stars! Fantastic story
By Jillian Read-Love-Blog
Out of Control is the first work of Stephanie Feagan that I have read. I was pulled in the minute I read the synopsis and wasn't let go until I finished the last page! What an incredible ride!

As an oil rig blowout specialist, a work field made up of 99% men, Blair Drake is used to being the only woman on the job. She's used to the ribbing from the guys and has successful tuned it out for years....well, the ribbing along with men in general. Since her divorce from the jerk she had married and divorced, she's decided her career is really the only thing she loves and wants to focus on. But when the latest job puts her in contact with her ex, she has no choice but to deal with him once again. Luckily for her, a handsome newbie crew member is a welcomed distraction. The attempts on her life upon witnessing suspicious things after a string of oil well explosions? Well, she soon realizes on this particular job, nothing will be following protocol.

Nick Robichaud, an oil well fire expert, is a man on a mission and a man with a past. He's here on this latest job not only to put out a fire but to protect the beautiful and sassy gal running this crew. There have been a slew of suspicious blowouts and the one person who has put together a few odd coincidences and circumstances is Blair. Even though she is his supervisor and her life is at risk, he can't ignore the attraction he feels toward her and will be happy to lay on his Southern charm to get her to admit she feels the same attraction toward him.
Together, Blair and Nick embark on a mission to prove the well fires were set on purpose and to find out who is responsible. Not an easy task when you've got players from Homeland Security, a Saudi King, oil company execs and a slimy ex husband involved. But what Blair and Nick find along the way is beyond what either one of them were looking for.....love.

Wow....just wow. I absolutely loved this book! What didn't this story have? Mystery, suspense, action, emotion...a total package of awesome! Blair is an amazing character with so many facets to her that I adored her. Sure, she's tough and strong but she's still a woman and when she starts to show those feminine sides, it completes her complexity. She's no-nonsense and a straight shooter and goes after what she wants but she's also vulnerable and has her share of weaknesses. I loved when she started telling us about her past and let us see what made her who she is today. Nick is simply delish! He oozes charm and confidence and is all alpha male but also has his share of weaknesses. He's loyal and honorable and has secrets and a past that are heartbreaking when he shares them. Together the relationship they form isn't one of a typical romance....and I loved it. They build on an instant and intense attraction but do so slowly and it ends up being so real and believable to the reader. There are a few scenes toward the end that I absolutely died over....emotional and intense and absolutely beautiful! I was so pleased with how their story ended and loved the inside jokes that Blair had with the reader....fantastic way to build a connection to a character! (When you read this book and get to the "killing the shark" parts, you'll get it)

Overall I adored is book and recommend to all you romantic suspense fans. I hope we see more from this series and the secondary characters because they are all amazing! Thank you, Stephanie, for a fantabulous story!

Amazing suspense, great characters and romance, this one is one great read!
By Crystal Fulcher
What was not to love about Out of Control? Kick-butt heroine who knows when to lean on someone else, check. Kick-butt alpha male hero who is definitely more than he appears, check. Interesting suspense, check. Believable romance, check. It had everything I was looking for in a romantic suspense! Now onto the specifics:

Plot:
I normally start with characters, but since I feel this book was slightly more suspense than romance (but don't worry there is still romance) the plot is more of the steering factor. The characters are important too, but the suspense seemed to drive the book, at least to me. From oil wells in the Gulf to one in Texas and then overseas this book offers the variety of different locales. I loved the information about what the team did to stop the oil rig fires. It was fascinating but the plotting really got going with the suspense of who set the fires and then onto finally solving and proving the crime which takes place overseas and really added to my interest. I don't know much about oil drilling, oil rigs and the fires but really feel Ms. Feagan did her research. And her research really shines with the overseas part of the book. I was fascinated, captivated and just thoroughly entrenched in this book due to the plot.

Characters:
The characters are stars in their own right. Blair is a female in a career full of males and she comes from a fancy family. So many contrasts about her, and I loved it. She also didn't pretend to be something she wasn't. She was tough, but underneath it she seemed to understand she needed to lean on someone. Now maybe she didn't want to but she understood it. Nick is alpha to the hilt but kind and gentler with Blair. He also has secrets which are fascinating and really add to the story. And the chemistry between Nick and Blair is scorching. You can feel the heat between them and it's sexy. As I mentioned in the interview I loved Conaway. So snarky and fun, yet she pulls no punches as well. She will get what she wants through sheer determination. And I loved that she and Blair clicked. Conaway really added to the story and sometimes it's hard to have that third character that you really like, but Ms. Feagan did it and now I can't wait to get Conaway's story as well!

Out of Control was an amazing edge-of-your-seat read. It took me one day to read (I had interruptions). I just had to know how it would turn out and kept turning the page. I was engrossed by the plot and I cared about the characters. I loved learning new things and visiting new places. It was one of those reads that I am still thinking about days later. I want more of Nick and Blair and hope to see at least a little of them in Conaway's book! If you love romantic suspense then this is a great book to read!

Significant amounts of money and resources are spent on child and family services, so successful evaluation of whether or not they are achieving the best outcomes is therefore essential.

This edited collection offers an international perspective on the challenges of designing and undertaking outcome-based evaluation of child and family services. With contributions from leading international experts, it introduces the key ideas and issues currently being debated in the evaluation of these services; discusses relevant approaches to designing and using evaluation methods; and provides examples of evaluation from the real world of policy and practice. Issues covered include setting appropriate indicators for service effectiveness, cross-cultural evaluation of service interventions, service user involvement in evaluation, and evaluations of family and community-based services.

This invaluable book will be essential reading for policy makers, planners, commissioners and managers across child and family welfare services, as well as researchers and other academics in the field.

Review
In conclusion, the articles in the book are a collection of research and journal articles from international academics. The targeted audience of this book would be the practitioner who is keen to embark on research or the worker who wishes to read more about international evidence from other countries... there are some interesting policy perspectives from other countries which practitioners might consider advocating in the New Zealand context with the hope that such policies might improve the wellbeing of children and their families. -- Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work

Walden on Wheels: On the Open Road from Debt to Freedom, by Ken Ilgunas

The story of a student who went to extraordinary lengths - including living in a van on a campus parking lot - to complete his education without sacrificing his financial future. In a frank and self-deprecating voice, memoirist Ken Ilgunas writes about the existential terror of graduating from college with $32,000 in student debt. Inspired by Thoreau, Ilgunas set himself a mission: get out of debt as soon as humanly possible. To that end, he undertook an extraordinary 3-year transcontinental journey, driving to Alaska and taking a series of low-paying jobs. Debt-free, Ilgunas then enrolled himself in a master's program at Duke University, using the last of his savings to buy himself a used Econoline, his new "dorm." The van, stationed in a campus parking lot, would be an adventure, a challenge, a test of his limits. It would be, in short, his "Walden on Wheels."Ilgunas went public in a widely read Salon article that spoke to the urgent student debt situation in America today. He offers a funny and pointed perspective on the dilemma faced by those who seek an education but who also want to, as Thoreau wrote, "live deep and suck out all the marrow of life."

No, it's NOT a creepy van.
By Theoden Humphrey
"He was many things -- a surveyor, a naturalist, a handyman, a pencil-maker -- but I thought of Thoreau as a writer more than anything else. And his greatest story wasn't one of his essays, or 'Walden.' His greatest story, I thought, was his life. He knew that anything is possible when you wield the pen and claim your life as your own. . . . [F]or those of us who can, should it not be our great privilege to live the lives we've imagined? To be who we want to be? To go on our own great journeys and share our experiences with others?"

It's interesting that Ken Ilgunas describes himself, repeatedly, as a slacker: apathetic and indolent throughout his high school and undergraduate career, he finished college with a degree he didn't particularly care for (though he had found some inspiration in the last year or so of college, some thirst for knowledge, some interest in writing) and $32,000 in debt. But a slacker would never have done what Ilgunas did: he found work during a recession and despite the enormous surfeit of college graduates with degrees but little passion, he worked at crappy jobs in ugly circumstances, worked extra hours (60, 70, 80 a week) as much as possible, he saved every penny he could, he bought almost nothing for himself -- and he paid off his debt. And then, he went back to school. But to ensure that he did not go back into debt -- a promise he had made to himself while chipping away at the mountain of his first batch of student loans -- he chose to live in a van.

Ilgunas calling himself a slacker reminds me of a favorite quote from Lech Walesa, the Polish union organizer who brought his country from communism to democracy in the 1970's and 1980's: "I'm lazy. But it's the lazy people who invented the wheel and the bicycle because they didn't like walking or carrying things." And just like Walesa, who couldn't rationally be considered lazy, Ken Ilgunas cannot rationally be considered a slacker.

What both of these men are -- and, arguably, Henry David Thoreau before them, who served as Ilgunas's primary inspiration for his simplified life -- is dedicated. Because Ilgunas is dedicated, focused only on what was really important, he didn't spend time or effort, or money, on things that were unnecessary -- and Ilgunas has a very definite and narrow idea of what was necessary. It was only one thing: freedom. To achieve that, first he had to escape his suburban boredom, which he did by going to Alaska, and visiting one of the last truly wild places left in America; and then he had to escape his debt. Then he had to go back to school, where he discovered a new purpose -- and the answer to that new purpose was this book.

Mr. Ilgunas succeeded in this last purpose as well. Because he has inspired me, and, I have no doubt, many others, too.

It's a good story. It's an Everyman's memoir, though Ilgunas does what most of us never bring ourselves to do, to our own loss. I thought it would focus more on the actual vandwelling that features so prominently on the cover, but the first two-thirds of the book is not: it tells the story of his war with his debt. It's a good story, and a necessary one to understand the vandwelling. It's an especially good story for people today to read. I'm glad I did. I will be sharing this book with my college-bound students (I teach high school) and I will go on my own great journey, and I will share my experience with others. Yeah. I'll go for it.

Wow - Incredible Story!
By Loyd Eskildson
Author Ken Kilgunas graduated from the University at Buffalo owing $32,000 and with a degree in history and English. (Fortunately, he'd limited his debt by working over 30 hours/week at a Home Depot - $8/hour.) Unable to find work, he ended up taking a $9/hour job and tour guide and cook at a Coldfoot truck stop about 174 miles into the mostly gravel Dalton Highway and 60 miels north of the Arctic Circle, mostly used by truckers en route to Prudhoe Bay from Fairbanks.(He notes in 2009 there were 17.4 million college graduates in jobs not requiring a degree, including 365,000 cashiers and over 100,000 janitors - 5,057 with doctorate or professional degrees.) Clothes came from donation bins, friends cut his hair. The 'good news' is that the nearest store was in Fairbanks (no temptation to spend money), there was no cellphone reception (no temptation to sign onto a phone plan), and he got free room and board. One year later, he'd paid off $18,000. A year later he got a better-paying seasonal job as a back country ranger with the Park Service at the Gates of the Arctic National Park, and after 2.5 years, was debt free.

In Alaska, Kilgunas also learned about subsistence living and worked with a 74-year-old maintenance man living in his 1980 Chevy Suburban. Wanting to continue his education, he applied to and was accepted at Duke. Living quarters would be a 1994 Ford Econoline van he bought for $1,500 (complete with bald tires) - for two years! Internet and electricity - available at the library. Showers, via a cheap campus gym membership. The bathroom was a quarter-mile from his parking space. Food - he cooked himself in the van, averaging $4.34/day, much cheaper than Duke's cheapest on-campus meal plan $15/day. Their cheapest dorm rooms cost 18X what he paid for his parking permit. Other expenses were covered by tutoring and becoming a test subject.

It's a shame that college costs have reached such levels that Ken had to take such actions, though obviously a great credit to him that he did it. The bad news is that he left Duke with no job and a another degree not likely to bring in a good income. Hopefully his education in living, combined with writing talent, will do what the college educations alone could not - allow Ken to live his dream. Since then he's hiked the length of the controversial Keystone Pipeline - total cost of $6,983, $5,220 of that for gear.

A young writer not afraid to soar
By Abbot of Acorn Abbey
Ken Ilgunas' book gives me some hope for the future. Ken's story proves that the American suburbs and the American education system can still -- at least on rare occasions -- produce a genuine, thinking, feeling, conscious, self-directed human being.

What does it take to do that? A fertile and rebellious young mind with a hunger for books and genuine experience, plus exposure to the writings of the best minds of the past: In other words, a liberal arts education.

Young though he may be, Ken is a natural-born philosopher, just as he is a natural-born writer. Though he makes much of his slacker, frat-boy origins, no doubt that is part of a writerly device to keep his feet on the ground, even when the wind is in his wings. Slacker frat-boys don't get to speak at Duke graduations, nor are they capable of conceiving, or finding words for, Ken's powerful appeal for the liberals arts, which brought tears to my eyes in an era in which universities are spending borrowed money to build yet more business schools.

I want to take issue with a couple of reviews that have attempted to police and scold Ilgunas for occasionally being politically incorrect. One review lifts out of context a passage in which Ilgunas expresses thoughts of aggression toward a homeless guy who had duped him. I must police and scold such careless reviewers, who lack the insight to realize that Ilgunas really was expressing anger at himself, and questioning his own self-worth, because it was a low point in his journey. Of course Ilgunas is occasionally politically incorrect. He is a truth-seeker and a truth-teller, with no time for frauds and scams.

I eagerly await Ilgunas' future writings. For better or for worse, he is never going to be able to live the way other people live. He is a heretic, so he is doomed to re-imagine how one might live, and how one might think, in times like the times we live in. It was largely Thoreau, it seems, who helped Ilgunas climb to the peak upon which he now stands. But I have to imagine that Ilgunas is looking up toward the next level of the climb, trying to figure out what obstacles the modern world is going to throw in his way, and what insights and philosophical tools it's going to take to go higher.

The book is all about "encouraging, enabling, enriching, engaging, and empowering" your child. It is broken up into nine chapters containing short descriptions of over 100 games or exercises that facilitate an aspect of homework - perfect for dipping into. -- Special Children While the book aims to help parents of children with ADHD, it is something that any parent would benefit from. I wish I had come across it years ago. -- Special Children Veteran educator Green offers some sound ideas for creatively approaching that dreaded nightly task called homework--a task made exponentially more difficult with an ADHD child. Designed for children in grades K-8, each activity is designed to engage, enable, enrich, and encourage the ADHD child by leveraging the traits associated with the disorder. From answering multiplication problems by jumping the correct number of times to learning spelling words by using a variety of writing tools (e.g., finger in air, glitter pens, computer keyboard), Green addresses everything from preparing the external environment to tools for dealing with ADHD-specific challenges and provides tips for individual subject areas such as writing, spelling, and math. VERDICT Her overriding philosophy is that parents cannot bestow enough positives. Green's creative and empowering tools will become go-to strategies for many families and teachers. Enthusiastically recommended. -- Library Journal Change homework helplessness to homework excitement when you follow suggestions in "AD/HD Homework Challenges Transformed!" by Harriet Hope Green. Through delightfully fresh activities and ideas, Ms. Green provides the reader with a step-by-step instructional 'how to' that will be appreciated by educators and parents alike! -- Wilma Fellman, M.Ed., Licensed Professional Counselor and author of The Other Me: Poetic Thoughts on ADD for Adults, Kids and Parents, Michigan Harriet Hope Green has tutored my daughter for several years, and has introduced many of the creative ideas in the book. I marvel at how much the activities in this book can alter the mood of an often dreaded homework session. The creative activities help students forget they are doing homework. The mystery box was so much fun. An excellent resource for parents!
By Dave the Dad
I have been struggling to help my ADHD son with his homework and have accumulated several books which have not advanced my cause very much. This book provides a lot of very practical AND very creative ideas to reduce the suffering of both parent and child. THe book is laid out in a way that makes sense and the ideas are written in a clear and concise way without having a lot of jargon to wade through. This is by far, the most helpful book that I have read on this subject. Thanks!!!

AD/HD Homework Challenges Transformed Review AD/HD Homework Challenges Transformed Review
By Connie Mistler Davidson
Change homework helplessness to homework excitement when you follow suggestions in AD/HD Homework Challenges Transformed! by Harriet Hope Green. This book is totally engaging and has some very original ideas to help lower the stress of homework completion. It's extremely practical.

In her introduction, Harriet Hope Green states that the challenges of doing homework can be met by using activities that "empower, engage, enrich, enable, and encourage." Her activities do all of these things. Parents and educators are given a full menu of activities and strategies to suit individual students. At the end of each activity, a note details what the activity does for the child. Of course, this is one or more of the five "E" words listed above.

When children feel like they have some control (empowered) in their homework choices, they are more likely to become engaged in the work. This active involvement allows them to appreciate the enrichment that their parents or teachers can give them. As the student starts to feel addtional success, they are enabled to do more. All of this happens as a product of the encouragement that adults can offer the student.

Parents can be encouraged by the user-friendly structure of this book. The introduction has ideas about how to get ready for doing homework. Chapter 1 Enablers, continues this theme. There are ideas for starting and planning homework. I especially like the idea of having a "reliable best buddy." Another child is available to call if the student with AD/HD has difficulty remembering something about the homework assignment. Even younger children can benefit from the segment on "The Schedule." Middle and high school students should take advantage of this lesson on getting organized. It would be a good skill for students who are college bound.

Students with AD/HD who want to go to college often lack the study skills to do so successfully. What do you see when you open a student's backpack? You bet! It's a huge jumble of paper. Ms. Green has a solution for this. Sort those papers into three piles. There's the pile that gets pitched. Some papers go back into folders in the backpack. Others, which the student might need later, go into a box. Aspiring college students will also learn how to get a project started. Then, they will be able to work through the project and bring it to a successful conclusion. Activity ideas are shown in study skills areas from writing to science.

Bring on the Homework, Chapter 3, has ideas for practicing basic skills. There are also ideas for rewards. My favorite is the "unexpected reward." Wrap small boxes containing cards that describe rewards that the child finds reinforcing. These could include a later bedtime, activity time with a parent, or special privileges. After a great homework session, the child may choose one package to unwrap. This is done just frequently enough for the child to maintain excitement about opening the packages. This type of reward loses its punch if it is done too often.

Chapters 4-7 address subject specific strategies for making homework engaging for the child. Reading, math, spelling and writing are all explored. The largest section is writing. Ms. Green is obviously familiar with the problems that many students who have ADD/ADHD have with writing. There are many ways to help the child conquer the fear of writing. A novel approach is to let the child choose a restaurant for a family meal as a reward for an accomplishment. Read a few professional reviews of the restaurant. At the restaurant have the family discuss the types of things that a reviewer would describe. Then, let the student write his own review and mail it to the restaurant. This is an authentic type of activity. It is a task that people do in real life. I might also have the student post the review online for others to see. This would take editing and revising to suit writing for an online audience.

Chapter 8 Addressing Symptoms and Chapter 9 Emotions both tackle major problems for kids with AD/HD. There are ways to work with impulsivity and hyperactivity. Social skills and reading emotions are discussed. These chapters have a bit of overlap. Some of the sections would work in either chapter. All of this information is well-worth reading.

I would have enjoyed having a chart for each section showing which activities are most appropriate for different ages or grade levels. This is a minor wish. The book is filled with ideas for all ages and educational levels.

In her concluding chapter, Harriett Hope Green says that the book "does not offer any cures." It may not offer cures; AD/HD Homework Challenges Transformed! does offer hope for every parent and child who has struggled through hours of homework at the finish of a very long day.

This book was provided to me for review by the publisher. I was not paid for the review.

In Social work under pressure, Dr Kate van Heugten, an associate professor at the University of Canterbury, shows her skills as a scholar, researcher and writer. Most importantly, however, she effectively demonstrates that she is a social worker's social worker... As demonstrated by her comprehensive bibliography and her own extensive list of publications, there isn't much about social work stress that the author hasn't thought, read or researched about. An Asperger Marriage, by Christopher Slater-Walker, Gisela Slater-Walker

Chris and Gisela have been partners for twelve years. Four years ago Chris was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. For Chris, this was an explanation of why he had always regarded himself as `socially handicapped'. For Gisela, it meant coming to terms with a marriage in which there would never be an intuitive understanding despite Chris's good intentions. For the couple it was the beginning of a long and still unfinished process of learning to live with a disability regarded by some as incompatible with marriage.

Review
This fascinating book is a joint venture between Gisela and Chris. They have each written frankly of their own perceptions of their marriage and reflect with great sensitivity on the impact which Asperger's syndrome has had on their 12 years of living together. It is likely to be of particular interest to those involved in marital counselling. 'If you are looking for a sensitive and enlightening insight into an 11-year-old marriage between a man diagnosed with Asperger's and his long-suffering wife, look no further than this excellent book... the heartening message is that, despite the immense obstacles - both within the marriage and from the lack of facilities available - here is a couple that have managed to go a long way towards bridging that "yawning chasm". -- Looking UP [When] one partner has Asperger syndrome, making the diagnosis can be problematic, but giving advice on coping and understanding the condition is even more problematic. That is why reading Chris and Gisela's book was so fascinating and helpful. They do not pretend that it is easy, but their factual information with some poignant yet amusing anecdotes make this an enjoyable, as well as informative, book to read. I would highly recommend the book for couples where one partner has Asperger syndrome and for professionals, not only those working in this field, but anyone who works with people with relationship difficulties. It is definitely on my list of recommended reading. -- Communication A humane and tender book...Chris's writing itself has done more to explain to me what Asperger syndrome involves than any 'description' I have previously read...The book is hopeful without being soppy and brave without being boastful. -- Open Mind This book is the first to examine a successful marriage from both perspectives and provides knowledge that will be of value, not only to similar couples and individuals with Asperger Syndrome who are considering a relationship, but also the organizations that support relationships. -- from the foreword by Tony Attwood This book is the first of its kind and is an essential read for couples, parents and professionals involved or interested in gaining a deeper understanding into the uncharted territory of Asperger marriages. -- Maxine Aston, Relate Trainer and Couple Counsellor specialising in relationships affected by Asperger Syndrome and author of 'The Other Half of Asperger Syndrome'. A very readable book, pastors may welll find it helpful for their own understanding, but also as a resource to pass on to couples concerned for their autistic child, as also to people suffering from this particular disability. -- Ministry Today This is a book of real value to people with a personal experience of AS and one which will also be reassuring to parents of children diagnosed with AS. I would particularly recommend it as a quick read to both social and health care professionals who are involved in making assessments, trying to understand the 'person' and attempting to enable people with AS to achieve their own aspirations. -- Professional Social Work Magazine

Explanation without assistance
By William McNeill
First comment: Flog the editor. Perhaps the cumbersome and confusing writing-style was intentional; however, I fear that it was merely sloppy.
Second comment: Having AS myself, I was hoping for insights into coping and avoiding pitfalls. Instead, what I got was a chronicle of another couple's fumbles, stumbles and misunderstandings. I suppose the book lived up to its title; it never promised that it contained solutions or recommendations, merely that it was about An Asperger Marriage. I am still surprised by Tony Attwood's endorsement of this book.
Summary: If you want a peak into the lives of one "Asperger Marriage", this book may be for you. If, on the other hand, you're looking for advice and guidance, keep looking. (and let me know when you find it!)

Helpful in a limited way
By neamhní
My partner and I are both on the autistic spectrum, and we've been buying a number of books to help us be aware of the potential pitfalls we may face in our relationship. While "Asperger Marriage" is an interesting account of a couple in which one partner is autistic and the other is not, it should not be thought of as the type of "self-help" book that my girlfriend and I thought it was. Rather, those in such relationships would do better to regard it as an example of possible difficulties they themselves may be facing in their relationships, not as a source of guidance on how to address and overcome those difficulties. Provided the reader enters into the reading with that in mind, "Asperger Marriage" is a worthwhile book for those in similar relationships.

Having only just been diagnosed with Aseperger's Syndrome, I can safely tell you this book sucks
By BD Obsessor
I must concur with my fellow Aspies on this title. It should be called How To Have An Abusive Relationship With An Aspie, pure and simple. Gisela Slater-Walker ought to get on her knees every night and thank the stars she is not married to someone like me, because not all Aspies can be cruelly dominated over as she does with her husband. Living for over twenty years with abuse from family, schoolteachers, and doctors that can all be in some way linked to undiagnosed AS does not make for the kind of man who responds to having dishes thrown at walls near him with just a change in expression. That's an in-joke, by the way.

The implication is also made that Asperger's Syndrome prevents one from having an understanding relationship with another human being. This, as my past two girlfriends whom I have just spoken with on this subject can testify, is one half bull, and the other half... well, you get the idea. Sure, it takes a bit more work than it does for those who take their understanding of social cues for granted, but that does not make it impossible. [...]

This book is such a joke that you can tell the difference between a normie and an Aspie with one simple test. Aspies would not give this book more than two stars.

Back to Basics
By Michael J. Williams
I haven't read too many of the other DnD books (Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Ravenloft, etc) because I found them, especially the earlier ones, to be a bit too much like a bad gaming session. They also seemed to be written more for Young Adults than grown up gamers like myself.
That being said, I am really looking forward to this series. Sort of a back to basics gaming novel, without 20 years of history to have to muddle through.
I enjoyed The Savage Caves quite a bit. It sports a rather unique, though, as I said, basic, storyline. The iconic characters in this story are Regdar the human fighter, Jozan the human cleric, Lidda the halfling rogue and Naull the human wizard. The characters are well portrayed, if a little stereotypical (but what do you expect from DnD, which is rife with stereotypes). There is some genuine chemistry between the characters (especially Lidda and Regdar) and a little love interest as well (though not between Regdar and Lidda).
I have to say that my favorite character is Jozan. Though this is ostensibly Regdar's book, Jozan shines here, especially in his interaction with Lidda.
I do have two complaints about the book, though.
The first one is the length. It is a very thin novel and costs as much as a larger one. The print is small, though, so there is some meat to the story, and I didn't feel like I didn't get my money's worth, so that complaint is a small one.
The second is the slang. Lidda frequently uses what I consider to be current slang (i.e. "My bad" and the like) which interrupts the flow of the novel, in my opinion, and smacked me in the head with it. Although I don't expect a bunch of "thee"s and "thou"s from the characters, Lidda's slang (not to mention Naull's pumping her fist and exclaiming "Yes!" when she was able to cast a particularly well-timed spell) was a little disconcerting. I removed one star from my review for this, as it really affected the whole feel of the novel.
So, all in all a good start, with a few bumps, and I am really looking forward to "The Living Dead".

Fun, but short dungeon hack 'n slash adventure
By Amazon Customer
"The Savage Caves" is the first in the new line of books based on the popular Dungeons & Dragons role-playing. These books seem to be written for two groups: new readers of fantasy and long-time players who seek a feeling of nostalgia. This one wasn't a masterpiece by any means, and as fantasy novels go, was just an average story. However, it was a fun story that gives the reader a sense of playing the game, keeping track of hit points, magic spells used, etc.
"The Savage Caves" revolves around a band of adventurers who are on a quest to stop giant spiders from stealing the livelihood of a small town -- their sheep. The fighter and mage agree to stop the spiders if a halfling scheduled for execution is freed and allowed to join their party. Along the way, they meet a young mage who has just left her mentor after years of training.
The group eventually follows the spiders to a series of caves. There they encounter goblins and a large hobgoblin that is running the show. The adventure is basically a hack 'n slash one as the party battles the spiders and goblins, eventually leading to the non-surprising big battle with the hobgoblin leader. However, the mystery behind the spiders' actions is also revealed as the story reaches a predictable, but satisfying ending. Overall, if you enjoy fun fantasy with little plot or character development, "The Savage Caves", and most likely the following books in the series, would be a satisfying read.

Fun little adventure
By Pat Luther
I bought this book hoping for some mindless entertainment on the bus. Turns out, it really isn't that mindless, but it is entertaining. It's a D&D book, so I really wasn't expecting much, but it did a good job of capturing the mood of a good D&D game, a "first adventure" plot to start a campaign. Lotsa action, lotsa fun, and some clever things thrown into a pretty straightforward plot. The only thing that did bother me, as an earlier poster pointed out, was the use of modern slang. Several times, my tenuous suspension of disbelief was shattered by it. In spite of that, I actually found myself worried about Naull and hoping she wouldn't be killed. After the bus ride, I finished the book and bought the The Living Dead the next day.
Aside from a fun action-packed fantasy, it does a good job of sticking to third edition D&D rules for the characters, and illustrating their implications to the characters. And, I'm gonna rip off the entire village and cave system situation for my group's next adventure.
