"Picture a gigantic cruise ship filled with happy people.
"It's the S.S. Evangelical Gospel. In the midst of their fun and excitement, passengers have not noticed holes in the ship's side under the water line. Well-meaning leaders are attempting to plug these holes with new methods, technology, social activism and cultural savvy. All these are important, yet the structure of the ship remains compromised by years of neglect."
In this thoroughly revised fourth edition of the now classic Tell the Truth, Will Metzger reinstates the truth framework necessary for the survival of evangelicalism. Biblical illiteracy among evangelicals is on the rise. Theological discernment between truth and error is increasingly elusive. We need to be recalibrated not to the changing times but to the changeless gospel.
As useful as it is passionate, Tell the Truth will refocus and re-energize a whole new generation to communicate the whole gospel, wholly by grace, truthfully and lovingly.

Gospel Packed
By Dr. David P. Craig
Tell the Truth fills a huge void in the literature on the subject of evangelism - sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others. Most books on evangelism focus on techniques and methods. Metzger on the other focuses primarily on developing a theology of evangelism. Metzger does a phenomenal job of tackling the question: What truth or key truths are essential to the gospel message? After spending time on the key elements of doctrinal truth of our message (understanding the gospel) - Metzger gives abundant examples of how to share the truth/s of the gospel message with others.
In this thorough handbook on evangelism Metzger addresses the following issues with great theological depth, biblical support and commentary, and practical applications: The importance of doctrine and theology in evangelism; Distinguishing our role from God's role in evangelism; Man-centered verses God-centered methods in evangelism; The five primary points of evangelism; Myths and facts about God's grace; God's sovereignty and our responsibility; How worship is the motivation for evangelism; Challenges for evangelism amid pluralism; How to communicate the gospel personally with different types of people; and how to bloom with the gospel where you are planted.
This book also contains a plethora of resources for training material on every aspect of evangelism including: How to prepare your testimony; How to develop a theological methodology of evangelism; How to say what you mean; How to ask good questions; Doing friendship evangelism; Questions non-Christians ask; Sharing the gospel using stories; and many other helpful templates, Charts, outlines, guides, questions to ask, and so forth. There is also a schedule for doing a God-centered evangelism training seminar in your church, school, or small group; and a study guide containing twelve sessions for individuals or groups.
I believe Metzger's book is arguably the best resource on evangelism available today from a God-centered perspective. It is the equivalent of a seminary course in evangelism and is a book that you will come to again and again for its depth of insight and practical wisdom as you seek to better understand and declare the good news of the gospel for life. I am so grateful for this exceptional resource that guides the beginner or seasoned veteran in "speaking the truth in love."

Cutting it straight
By Jerry Ray Wood
I am 73 still fishing for men, this is the very best book on telling the gospel to a lost world I have ever read. Dispels the concept of cheap grace so prevalent today. A must read if you want to effectively spread the whole gospel of Jesus Christ.

a good "how-to" for evangelism
By D. T. Kleven
Tell the Truth is a great one-stop book on evangelism. Will Metzger breaks it into three sections: on the gospel, the lost, and the Christian witnessing - "the whole gospel, to the whole person, by whole people." In the first section, he evaluates faulty gospel presentations ("the gospel reduced"), including man-centered messages ("here's how you can have a better life..." and the minimizing of sin. He explains how the backdrop of God's holiness and His law are essential to an understanding of sin, without which the "good news" isn't meaningful at all.
In the second section, he explains how evangelizing is meant to impact the mind, the emotions and the will ("the whole person"). Some evangelistic techniques focus on the will, getting someone to "make a decision for Christ." This is important, but it is only one part of the equation. Others focus on an emotional experience, and try to create them with music and manipulation. Metzger explains how a true gospel response affects the whole person, not just a single part of them.
The last section deals with our part: sharing the message. It includes lots of tips for communicating with people, how to start conversations and lead them toward the Gospel, how to deal with fear, the importance of prayer, and the end goal of making disciples.
This is a helpful book. It exposes bad evangelistic techniques and offers a solid way forward. It is stirring to read - I was convicted of the need to evangelize more regularly. I've thought through evangelism pretty thoroughly (after reading Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, Today's Gospel: Authentic or Synthetic?, and Todays Evangelism) but I was stretched even further by some of Metzger's thorough analysis.
I definitely recommend it as a good book on the "how-to" of evangelism.
