About the Author
Elizabeth J. Duncan, author of the Penny Brannigan mysteries, is a winner of the 2013 Bloody Words Light Mystery Award and has been a finalist for the Agatha and Arthur Ellis Awards. She enjoys spending time each year in North Wales and lives with her dog Dolly in Toronto, where she teaches in the public relations programs at Humber College.

comfort reading at its finest

I absolutely loved this terrific, ultra cozy fifth book in the Penny Brannigan series. Penny owns a nail salon/spa in a small Welsh village and dates a police officer, DCI Gareth Davies.
In this installment, Penny is attending a clerical conference at Gladstone's Library in North Wales, along with Gareth. As is usual in these books, she gets involved in trying to solve the murders that take place in the book, this time, at the library.
I love how the author took many of the usual series characters and skillfully moved them to another locale, for a change of pace, to keep the series from getting stale, yet while retaining the usual feel of the books. Besides a decent mystery with characters I've grown to love, the book includes interesting details about churches and how they operate.
Though the book occurs in the present and, indeed, talks about email, the Internet, and other modern-day conveniences, it also has an old-fashioned charm to it, more so than just about any mystery series I read.
Incidentally, another favorite cozy series for me is the Dorothy Martin series by author, Jeanne Dams. As usual, Duncan manages to incorporate the lead character from this other series into her book (just as Penny Brannigan is routinely incorporated into the other series).
The Duncan books are comfort reading at its best.

Another winner in this excellent series!

In this latest entry in her excellent series set in north Wales, Elizabeth Duncan cleverly brings together a disparate cast of characters within the confines of one of the most remarkable places in the world--the magnificent Gladstone Library. During a clerical conference, ambition, revenge, fear, greed, and fraud gradually expose incidents of blackmail, bigamy, infidelity, a marriage scam, and ultimately, murder. DCI Davies and Penny Brannigan had hoped to enjoy a much needed break at the beautiful Library, but are forced to confront two complex murders while working through the unsettling doubt in their own relationship.
The obvious contrast between the crimes revealed and the serene, contemplative nature of the Library is startling, and the Library becomes not only setting and motive, but ultimately provides resolution and closure. This book is an outstanding new work by an accomplished writer, and is sure to please her many fans.
For those unaware of it, the Gladstone Library is a real place--the only ministerial and/or residential library in Great Britain.

Murder at Gladstone Library

Never Laugh as a Hearse Goes By is the fifth book in the Penny Brannigan cozy mystery series. Penny and Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Davis are invited to speak at a clerical conference at Gladstone Library in a small Welsh village. Rev, Thomas Evans and his wife Bronwyn who are from the same village as Penny and Gareth are attending also. Gareth and Penny are expecting to have a quiet get away after speaking at the conference.
This is not to be as murder soon occurs. Penny and Gareth are drawn into solving the murder. Two other residents from their town arrive to help with the murder. Florence Semble who knows how to read short hand and her landlady Evelyn Lloyd who invites herself. I enjoyed this portion of the book as I like reading about Evelyn Lloyd.
I like that Penny is level headed and shares information with Gareth. She likes to be involved in finding the solution to the crime but she lets the police bring in the criminal. Penny owns a successful spa along with her friend Victoria. She originally is from Canada but fell in love with Wales while backpacking through the area. Even Dorothy Martin from the Jeanne M. Dams series made a cameo phone call to Penny.
This is a series that I follow. I look forward to reading the next book to see what changes are in store for Penny Brannigan.
