Review
"Through the dramas of their wine-drinking characters, the (Tadashi Agi) instructs readers on how to taste wine. It’s hilarious, for sure, when a young woman swoons over a man’s decanting skills, but it’s also a great way to draw attention to the technical proficiency of a beautiful pour without getting too technical. And that’s what’s truly extraordinary about Drops of God: It makes learning about wine—which, let’s face it, can be a totally tedious thing for the non-obsessed—really fun... Seriously, this is juicy stuff!" -- GILT

“Absolute page-turner… It’s the sweeping two-page illustrations of taste-transporting moments (a shirt-tearing jam by rock band Queen, a maiden fleeing through strawberry fields) that better capture wine’s great allure than a thousand dry scribblings on history and weather conditions.” —Time Out New York

“An almost psychedelically beautiful work… It’s like Speed Racer crossed with Wine Spectator.” —The Daily Dish (LA Times)

“Visually stunning and effortlessly entertaining… To top it off, reading Drops is a trippy literary experience… Don’t be surprised if you crush this book in one night. It’s pretty impossible to put down once you pick it up.” —Bottlenotes (The Daily Sip)

“Presents some complex wine topics in an easy to understand manner, without talking down to the consumer… I urge all wine lovers to take a look, with an open mind, at The Drops of God. Give it a chance and you might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.”
—The Passionate Foodie

“Penchants for French wines drive the selection of vinos described with dramatic, often fanatical detail.” —Wine Enthusiast

Amazingly rich and gripping story centered on wine continues ~
By Christopher Barrett
I just finished volume three and in this volume the reader finally discovers the identity of the first apostle. I won't give anything away, but let's just say there are some surprises in store in this volume. The story starts where volume two left off. The enigmatic woman with amnesia is the first story arc in this issue. From there we follow along to the identity of the first apostle and then move beyond. My favorite part was the tasting of the 5 first growths of Bordeaux and the descriptions of each. We do see some interesting interactions and even unlikely alliances. Some characters reveal relations to others that are quite a surprise.

The story does center around wine, and it is amazing in so many ways. The characters do really love and appreciate wine, especially the rare and exotic, but we do see that they spend a lot of time defending the value wines or trying to find wines that can compete with some of the big boys. Never did I feel this story pretentious in the least. Comparing a wine to Rachmaninoff's second symphony is sheer brilliance, and I very much enjoyed the metaphor.

I will say that the American publisher really needed to pay a little more attention to grammar. One of my biggest peeves is the use of the word (actually not really a word) "anyways". There is no 's' at the end of anyway. And I really don't think the Japanese have something like that for "demo" or "soshite" (Japanese words for 'anyway' or 'but').

And I thought at one point the illustrator goofed on the shape of the Haut Brion bottle, (the earlier shot had the correct more sloped shoulders and emblem bottle) but then I realized they were half bottles and the half bottle of Haut Brion does not have the sloped neck shape that the 750 and 1.5L have. Interesting the attention to detail they put into this manga. Even the old bottles have the Seagram's import label affixed to them.

If you love wine, then you'll get a kick out of this. It's really the first manga in a long time that I really have enjoyed. It combines two things I really enjoy: Wine and Japan.

So Cheers! Salud! Kanpai!

The whole drops of god series is amazing. It drops a lot of really good wine knowledge, is extremely entertaining, and a very easy read. Not to mention the fact that it's one of the most influential wine books of all time. A must read for anyone who loves wine!.

The First Apostle.
By para
The Drops of God Volume 3 continues directly from Volume 2. The plot and knowledge of wine on which it is based builds carefully and the series really must be read in order from the beginning.

Shizuku Kanzaki has learned a fair bit about wine since deciding to participate in a contest to be able to identify thirteen wines from only descriptions written in his father's will, particularly for someone who had never tasted wine before. The first test of his knowledge is at hand as he and Issei Tomine will meet in this volume to attempt to identify the First Apostle. Shizuku and Miyabi will also discover the power of memories attached to wine and the "Italian wine snob" from their work will face his bias against French wines.

This volume is a tiny step down from the first two. The pacing of the side stories seems a bit slow and aren't as diverse in theme nor wine information as I've grown accustom to from the earlier tales. That being said, these are small things, everything here is still quite good and once the discussion of the First Apostle begins things pick up even further. The art continues to be a glorious counterpart to the story and is a primary reason The Drops of God is so engrossing and reaching its true potential.

The farther we go in the series the more interested in the scholarly and dramatic concepts of wine you'll need to be, as it's clear with thirteen wines to identify the information and study of wine will be quite dense by the end, but those like me that have that interest will thoroughly enjoy the journey.

Drops of God continues to impress and while there are a couple of rough spots (as with any series) they are minor and overall Agi is showing his delicately crafted story has the depth to go as long as his ambitious epic will require.

Highly recommended.
