Behind the Shattered Glass: A Lady Emily Mystery (Lady Emily Mysteries Book 8), by Tasha Alexander

A ruined abbey on a beautiful estate in Derbyshire, a murdered peer, and a most unlikely romance make New York Times bestseller Tasha Alexander’s new novel Behind the Shattered Glass absolutely irresistible

Anglemore Park is the ancestral home of Lady Emily Hargreave’s husband Colin. But the stately calm of country life is destroyed when their neighbor, the Marquess of Montagu, bursts through the French doors from the garden and falls down dead in front of the shocked gathering.  But who has a motive for murdering the young aristocrat?  The lovely cousin who was threatened by his engagement, the Oxford friend he falsely accused of cheating, the scheming vicar’s daughter he shamelessly seduced or the relative no one knew existed who appears to claim the Montagu title?  Who is the mysterious woman seen walking with him moments before he was brutally attacked?

The trail takes readers into the gilded world of a British manor house and below stairs to the servants who know all the secrets. One family’s hidden past and a forbidden passion are the clues to a puzzle only Lady Emily can solve.

From Publishers Weekly
In Alexander's entertaining eighth Victorian mystery (after 2012's Death in the Floating City), the recent birth of twin sons keeps amateur sleuth Lady Emily and her husband, intelligence agent Colin Hargreaves, at Anglemore, the Hargreaves Peak District estate, where the dramatic appearance of the mortally wounded Lord Montagu, their nearest neighbor, soon leads to a murder investigation. One suspect is the victim's cousin Matilda, who loves Montagu Manor fiercely and hopes to inherit it, but the many women the peer has seduced or compromised have reason to wish him dead as well. Emily's narrative alternates with a chronicle of life below stairs at Anglemore, where the servants hold valuable clues. Though some elements of a romance between a titled guest and housemaid feel implausible for the era, readers will relish Alexander's lyrical evocation of British landscapes and her gift for crafting engaging characters. Boisterous adventurer Rodney Scolfield and Emily's hidebound mother, Lady Bromley, are especially amusing. Agent: Anne Hawkins, John Hawkins & Associates. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Lady Emily Hargreave’s latest case presents itself, literally, on her doorstep with the abrupt collapse of handsome Archibald Scolfield, her newest neighbor and latest in a line of victims who “have no sense of decorum at all.” Scolfield arrived to claim his inheritance as the new marquess of Montagu, and his demise in this isolated location is extremely awkward. Lady Emily, whose intrepid personality rivals Elizabeth Peters’ fearless Amelia Peabody, chooses at once to investigate Scolfield’s new household and, surprisingly, when clues lead her there, to grill her own house staff. In the meantime, she ingeniously solves multiple difficulties for her mother (in residence), her maid (in love), and her friend Matilda (possibly in a great deal of trouble) while maintaining familial equilibrium and marital congeniality with Colin, her admittedly crotchety mate and lord of the manor. This delightful addition to Alexander’s Victorian series, with its requisite cast of aristocrats, locals, and disgruntled staff, is an eminently readable romantic puzzler reminiscent of Deanna Raybourn’s Lady Julia Grey novels and the mysteries of Georgette Heyer. --Jen Baker

"...entertaining...readers will relish Alexander's lyrical evocation of British landscapes and her gift for crafting engaging characters." - Publishers Weekly on Behind the Shattered Glass

"TOP PICK! The Lady Emily mysteries have all the makings of an elegant English tea: lushly described Victorian setting that moves through all levels of socity; a hero the reader will sigh for; a beautiful and very clever heroine. Add to that an intriguing mystery and a dollop of humor to finish!" -RT Book Reviews on Behind the Shattered Glass

Upstairs/downstairs mystery
By S. Mahnken
Behind the Shattered Glass is the eighth book in Tasha Alexander's Lady Emily series. In this entry, Emily and Colin are enjoying life with their baby sons on Colin's family estate. They have a new mystery to solve, however, when their neighbor, the Marquess of Montagu, enters their home unexpectedly one evening and falls down dead on the library carpet. Who bashed him on the head? And why would anyone murder this seemingly well-liked man?

I have a bit of a checkered history with the Lady Emily mysteries. Some of them I have enjoyed very much, while others I could not get interested in at all. In this case, I wound up being intrigued by the mystery of the murdered Marquess. There were enough potential suspects to keep the mystery from being easy to solve, and Alexander did a great job disguising who the killer was. I was actually surprised when the culprit was revealed, which doesn't often happen when I'm reading a mystery.

What made this mystery more entertaining for me was that Alexander intersperses the chapters discussing Emily's investigation of the murder with a description of the life of the servants below stairs. These chapters discuss the work of the servants, the intrigues between various members of the staff, and a budding (and, OK, probably unrealistic) romance between one of the housemaids and Colin's friend Simon, Lord Flyte. These chapters, while seemingly unrelated at first, eventually do dovetail with the investigation. The popularity of Downtown Abbey has revived interest in what it was like to be a servant on a great estate, and Alexander seems to be tapping into that interest with this particular novel.

All in all, this novel is a good read for fans of the Lady Emily series. Newcomers to the series who enjoy historical mysteries and are interested in servant life in England might also want to the book a try. (And if they enjoy it, they should definitely go back and sample the other books in the series.)

This could have been better...
By Mon McWalt
I've been a big fan of the Lady Emily series since day 1, and while I waffled about getting the last book for well over a year, I ended up really enjoying it. So when I saw that this book was coming out so soon after I'd read the last one, I was really excited. I wasn't ready to leave Lady Emily's world. I will start by stating that I enjoyed the book. I read it all in one day, pretty much, even picking up dinner so I could avoid cooking and wasting time I could have spent reading the book. So I'm not sad that I spent the money. However, I am really disappointed by Behind the Shattered Glass, as I felt it had the potential to be so much better. I did not expect the killer to be who it ended up being, but the build up to discovering who it was was jarring and really inconsistent. There was too much in the this book that felt rushed and undeveloped. ****Beware, spoilers may be ahead!*****For example, Lord Flyte. We are supposed to believe that he's a kind man who a maid would easily fall in love with, but he's never really given much character development, aside from being handsome, able to paint and a fan of singing maids. Lily is beautiful, fond of drawing and loves to sing. And she loves her job. There was no real nuance to her character. She felt like a lazy, sloppy portrait of a person who we are supposed to root for because she seems innocent and pure. And we are supposed to buy that someone like Lord Flyte would miraculously fall in love with her. And we're supposed to buy their relationship because the novel is heavy handed with Colin and Emily expressing antiaristocracy views- despite the fact that Colin works for the crown and Emily is friendly with the Queen.
I would have bought it, as I'm all for flights of fancy and suspending my disbelief, but it was too tidy and too easy. Too lazy. And that's what disappointed me. This felt more like the unpolished work of an amateur writer, not someone who has crafted more clever mysteries with fantastic characters you learn to care about.
However, it hasn't put me off the series altogether. I'm just somewhat disappointed. I wanted more and got less.

Missing all the good qualities of the earlier outings
By COH
Anyone who reads a book series at some point encounters an entry that simply seems to be written by someone else. Many fine authors are allowed (or encouraged) to publish inferior manuscripts and I place the blame firmly on the editor and publisher. I guess everything is about money, and even literary reputations are for sale. Yes, this is harsh. But I for one am tired of being "taken." We readers deserve better. Details? This book lacks descriptive detail, historical setting and focus on art; it lacks Lady Emily's inner voice (thoughts) as well as her narrative voice. Most of the book is repetitive dialogue. There is no explanation for why Lady Emily believes one thing or another, and she appears rather gullible and shallow in this entry. Her interaction with Colin lacks any emotion and seems contrived. At one point she is a devoted mother, the next the children are completely forgotten. (There is not one explanation about what has happened between the end of the last book and where we pick up here). Even Colin is flat. There is an Upstairs/Downstairs theme to this book that again is contrived and lacks depth. I was not fond of the story, which was a tangle of misdirection, and there was hardly a hint of backstory, so please, do not start the series here. This entry could be entirely deleted and a reader would miss absolutely nothing that could not be explained in two sentences in the next. And could someone please explain the title?
