When a good man reacts with stoical, rigid self-control to his beloved wife's sudden death, he is, in general, really repressing heartbreak. And so, when the adolescent daughter in the title story in this collection of nine observes her father late at night holding a wedding photograph of himself and his dead wife, sobbing with grief, what reader will be surprised? These tales of recognizable people living recognizable lives (with some glaring exceptions) are weakened more than once by managed scenes. In the extravagantly titled short narrative "What Doesn't Kill Me" (derived from Lenin's remark: "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger"), about an embittered young woman on the rebound from a shattered marriage, the leap in self-awareness suggested at the end seems unsupported by the story itself. An otherwise gripping story of adolescents at a turning point in their lives, "The Last Game," ends in an event broadly telescoped along much of the route, as is the tale of the despicable wayward husband in "The Visit." Still, Glasser at his best is a strong storyteller with a compelling, vivid sense of the common life and its illusions, concealments and despair.

Review
“Perry Glasser is one of the finest of the new short story writers.” —Vance Bourjaily “[A] novel of exaggeration and ribaldry. Big, vibrant, laugh-out-loud funny, it is also fearless about sex and violence, which in Riverton can seem like the same thing.” —Kelly Cherry, author of We Can Still Be Friends

Singing on the Titanic, a great read
By Ronald
The short story is perhaps the most challenging genre for an author. He must create characters with depth & virtually an entire universe with an economy of words unnecessary in longer works & he must make his story count for something important. Perry Glasser in Singing on the Titanic accomplishes this task brilliantly. The collection is filled with characters & settings that almost couldn’t be more different & varied, but every voice is authentic & true, from the middle-aged Jewish man to the post-adolescent Latina. His characters swim through the absurd chaos of life; some successfully, some tragically unsuccessful & some heroically flailing their arms like windmills just to stay in the same place. And every story offers the reader an insight into some dark hidden recess of the human soul.

Short story collection
By muddyboy1
From what I understand this book is going to be released again but the copy I got was from a recent goodreads contest. It was published originally in 1987. The copy is somewhat yellowed as it is 25 years old. As far as the content the is one 50 page work and about 70 pages of short stories. I think the longer work called "Mexico" is the best of the bunch. It is about a young couple from the states that go to Mexico primarily to look for drugs. The lady starts to sour on the relationship and is attracted to an American who is playing on a minor league baseball team there. These stories are a slice of life in the 80's if that is what you are looking for. The author has not written all that much since that time and is twenty five years older at this point. Some good and fair stories.
