There are layers of conspiracy and secrets, both because of history so ancient it has passed beyond legend and as a result of the complex duplicity involved in the dealings of Those of Name. Please read the others first...

I've been along for the ride since The January Dancer, and this is my favorite of the four. It nicely resolves the various plot threads left hanging in earlier books, and it is a pleasure to see Donovan functional and effective again. I would take a star off if the book had to be read without a prior reading of the other three, but why do this to yourself? Even if you ended up loving this book, you will have spoiled many of the plot twists in the earlier books. Please start with The January Dancer, and enjoy a carefully constructed and beautifully written multi-volume saga.
Don't worry much about the star map at the start of the book - the plot mostly takes place on only two systems. Do read closely when the various Magpie characters are introduced, or you'll find yourself asking "which one was "Five" again? And enjoy the little challenges to decode the linguistic origins of words like "miigimoos."

A Book Too Far

I have come to the reluctant conclusion that Michael Flynn may have some trouble with book series. I am an admiring fan of both his standalone novels, including Eifelheim and The Wreck of the River of Stars as well as his short fiction collections, such as Captive Dreams and The Forest of Time and Other Stories. I greatly enjoyed The January Dancer, the first installment in this book's series. But I read each book with decreasing enjoyment with a final, muddled finish. The same thing happened across the four books of the Firestar series.
I am willing to be convinced the fault is my own. Because I really like this author's other work. In case you would like to try to convince me, here are a couple of the things that bothered me.
By this point in the series, there are too many players in whatever game is being played. They are smart, courageous, crafty, and have historical significance to the story. They are also too hard to tell apart and fail to hold my interest. When some of them die, I lose track of which ones. And feel kind of bad about it.
Some of the things that were cool at the beginning have worn out their coolness and begun to grate. Yes, most of the characters are Bruce Lee-level hand-to-hand fighters. Many of them seem a little big-headed about it. Not interesting anymore. The special terminology also drops with lead-balloon impact. I get that there are Hounds, and Magpies, and Names, and whatever else. There's no mystery or intrigue to any of it. Just repetition.
The plot? Donovan, kidnapped, is finally taken to Earth. His daughter Bridget is coming to rescue him, and also to rescue her own kidnapped daughter. A bunch-load of their old friends and enemies are there. Donovan bumbles around the planet, learning some almost interesting things about Earth history. Then there is a big fight at the end. Some die; some don't. Don't ask me for specifics.
I am sorry folks--I really wanted to like this book. But I didn't. I finished it out of a felt duty of completion. You know that Eagles lyric, "Keep on singin' for the sake of the song?" Yeah. If you have come this far, having read the first three books in the series, go ahead and finish. That which you do is best done quickly.

A Future Ulysses

Here is the grand conclusion to a major story arc of Flynn’s Spiral Arm series of galactic SF that begins with The January Dancer and continues through In the Lion’s Mouth. There is certainly room for more sequels, but we are not, at the end, poised on a razor’s edge of suspense as we were with Lion.
When last we saw our protagonists, Donovan – the scarred man, the man of many names and personalities – was a prisoner in Gidula’s Stronghold, but still very much a player in the ongoing political and martial conflict between the Confederation of Central Worlds and the United League of the Periphery. After all, if you are a spy and an agent, sometimes a stronghold prison is the best place to be, for some things can only be learned when you are in enemy hands.
But now Ravn Olafsdottr has beguiled away Donovan’s daughter, the Harpist Mearana, to accompany her in an attempt to rescue him; and Francine Thompson has called to her aid many fellow Hounds to rescue Mearana. Thus are many men and women, heroic all, drawn to the center of things: some for love, some to strike a blow against the Confederacy, and some for treasure, for Ravn has proven that technological treasures, such as cloaks of invisibility, exist to be found and freed from the keep of the Confederacy. And what Hound worth his salt would not risk his life for one of those causes?
The scene in which the Hounds are winnowed was probably my favorite in the whole book, because I like tests and subtexts, but what follows lives up to and transcends that introduction. Not everyone who goes on the mission finds what they set out to find, and not all the ones that beg off disappear form the story, so keep all of them in mind as the adventure winds its way to a thoroughly satisfying conclusion as Mearana (as Telemachus), Francine (as a much more proactive Penelope), and Ravn (as Athena) rescue Donovan, who is trying to rescue much more than himself.
Michael Flynn is a wordsmith without peer. Anyone who likes the challenges and complexities of James Joyce novels should try Flynn on for size. I think Flynn is a far better writer: he doesn’t wallow in profanity, for one thing; and whereas Joyce seemed to be all about trumpeting what a genius he himself was, Flynn seems to be inviting readers to romp with his characters, peeping behind the curtains and illuminating darkened rooms. Joyce wrote AT an audience; Flynn writes FOR his. I would not want to spend an hour with any of Joyce’s characters. I would love to spend time in the company of Flynn’s.
