Jonathan L. Howard is a game designer, scriptwriter, and a veteran of the computer-games industry since the early nineties, with titles such as the Broken Sword series to his credit. He is the author of Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, Johannes Cabal the Detective, and the forthcoming The Brothers Cabal, as well as the YA novels Katya's World and Katya's War. He lives in the United Kingdom with his wife and daughter.

the writing is great and the setting is great

As usual, the writing is great and the setting is great. Howard creates a whimsical world that is enjoyably creepy/quirky and does so with quite the advanced and varied vocabulary. The problem with these books is that you don't really care about the characters that much. Although the plot is a good one, I got bored about 1/2 of the way through because there was nothing about any of the characters that really grabbed me. There needs to be more in the way of relationships between the characters in order to kick these books up a notch.

Good book, Bad Binding

First of all I loved this book, It adds a bit of Lovecraft-ian Horror to the series!, The low rating is solely for the binding and cover of the hard backed edition I received. This was a hardcover edition, however it was one of the smaller form factors used by book club editions and was published by St. Martins Press. The first two books in the series were the standard trade hardback format as used by Doubleday. Therefore it does not sit nicely on my shelf with it's brothers... argh! It appears to have the standard black paper covered matte board covers used by book club editions as well. The binding is flush cut glued rather than folios. And the dust jacket is a uniform magazine like glossy paper. Whereas the earlier books have a heavy matte paper that almost feels like cotton. While the full retail price would be worth it for a Doubleday printing, This printing has the low quality of the mail order book clubs you know and love that will sell you 7 books for a dollar to get you started. So, buy the ebook, the paperback or wait for a full sized Hardcover... but don't hold your breath... it was published in the UK for almost a year before it became available in the USA,

Oh the Horror, the Horror!!

If you like your heroes evil/good/funny/evil/good/funny - you know, conflicted; if you like sly, dry, deadpan humor - this book is well worth considering. In his first outing, Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, Cabal took us to a twisted and satisfying variation on Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and a traveling carnival of lost souls. In this third volume, we travel to the heart of dark darkness just south of the Mountains of Madness, and the trip is just as much fun.
There are a number of really fine authors who have created exciting and witty extranormal good/bad guys. Think of Derek Landy's Skullduggery Pleasant or Simon Green's John Taylor of the Nightside or Claire Chilton's sarcastic Carla Mainston or even Robert Rankin's Teddy Bear detective, Eddie Bear. Well, Johannes Cabal fits quite comfortably amongst that crew. He is elegant, witty, and deadpan funny. The story is not just setups and episodes. There is a twisty logic and underlying plan to the action that keeps the story moving and that provides a satisfying resolution. As always, the author is very generous with appealing supporting characters, and they are often allowed to have some of the best lines and best scenes. But as always, Cabal steals the show with his cutting and yet endearing banter.
So, if don't mind occasionally being slapped in the head by the protagonist, as long as everyone else is also being slapped around, and if you like your chills served up with everything from broad almost slapstick humor to icy observations and cutting insights, and especially if you just like the sound of the phrase "entertaining romp", this could be a nice find. (For what it's worth, the Amazon site has a fairly generous sample as part of the "Click to Look Inside" feature, so if you don't know Howard's work that is a fine place to get a little taste.)
