Interesting New Series
By The book lady
*May Contain Spoilers*
Synopsis:
Lily will do anything to get her son back. She spent two years thinking he was killed in the same vampire attack that killed her husband and daughter, but when she discovers he is still alive and being held by the vampires she will do anything even wear a chain that will link her to Adrien. Adrien has been imprisoned for a year because he was in the way. Daniel, the leader of the vampire council wants complete and absolute control and Adrien was in the way. But as much as Lily hates vampires for killing her family, Adrien hates humans. But some how they have to work together, bound together to find a weapon and release Lily's son.
Thoughts:
This is a very good and yet ultimately completely flawed book. I would recommend it to anyone who likes vampire/ urban fantasy romance, but don't expect a perfect book. The vampires in this book act more like the modern version of a werewolf. They don't need to be decapitated or staked, guns can kill them, they live in caves, have children and aren't turned into vampires, but are born that way. It's a very interesting twist that I really enjoyed. The romance here was very well done and the pacing of Lily and Adrian starting to accept each other as people was spot on, being their hate lasts for quite a long time, and lets face it she has every reason to hate vampires. The vampire society is intriguing and the plot is fast moving and exciting.
That being said, the books greatest flaw is ultimate also it's greatest accomplishment. The author submerges you into the story with zero info dumps at all. Everything you know about this world is from what we the reader experiences right along with Lily, the human avatar into this vampire world which keeps your interest in finding out more high and the tension going as the story moves along. But because there is almost no back story, other than magical out of body trips to the past, there are many unanswered questions. I get this is a series and not everything is going to be explained in book one, but there was never any real explanation for Adrian's loathing of humans. He is half human and even though he has seen bad humans he knows first hand not all humans are bad, but this was never delved into very much. Also little was brought up of Lily's previous life, just her grief over her lost family, but her personal history beyond losing her family is nonexistent. The lead characters are interesting and likable but they are not well rounded, Lily especially. Her one defining characteristic is love for her son, but she seems to have no character flaws at all.
Lily is described as a tracker, someone who can find anything from anywhere. She is forced to bond with Adrian to get her son back in exchange for finding a weapon that could destroy the whole vampire race. Lily's tracker abilities were described that within a few days of bonding with Adrian she would be "fully charged" from leeching Adrian's power and able to use the skill totally. But for the whole of the book Lily and Adrian spend their time nearly getting killed while looking for "clues" about where the weapon is. Why not just sit and wait safely for the bond to strengthen enough to let her use her skill instead of wasting time looking for clues? Because there is no info given about this it seemed odd and didn't make much sense to me. There is only one other thing that truly bugged me about the book. Adrian calls over a woman to "feed" him and when she comes over she starts to initiate sex while Lily is right there. Adrian gets extremely turned on by this other woman but then ends up sleeping with Lily. That left a bad taste in mouth for the whole book. The other woman aroused him so he took out his lust for the other women on Lily. I don't think this is what the author intended the reader to get from the scene, but that's what I got from the scene and it was never explained at all after the fact or even during the fact. The author wanted to show that Lily was possessive of Adrien because of bond but also showed Adrian wasn't possessive of Lily in the same way, getting immediately turned on by another woman.
All that being said, this was a really smart fun ride and if you are looking for new take on vampires this one is for you. I have high hopes that the next book will be better. It is so nice to read a book where the author doesn't hand you the information on a silver plater, but lets things come out slowly and naturally while keeping the tension high and the pacing just right.
4 stars. With just a little more explanation it would have been 5 stars.

WOW!! A MAJESTIC new romance series!
By Mary
Caris Roane is a master of paranormal romance, and this is one of her very best. The story is filled with deep emotion as a human woman who hates vampires falls in love with one of the most powerful vampire men ever created. And wow is this book HOT! It certainly lives up to the beautiful cover. I am enamoured with this breathtaking new world filled with passion, heart and heat. Highly recommended!

Entertaining
By Danielle
It took me a little while to get into it but once I did it went quickly. The male alpha did a go from hating the heroine to a mushy love ball mess WAY 2 quickly. It was such a. Extreme grump to gushing Romeo within a few chapters it seemed. The female the same. She rubbed me wrong because of her bigotry against vamps. I don't like when characters behave like 17 year olds or ridiculous kkk members. All this hypocritical hate for a species no differant from hers because of a personal tradgety. I understand it can happen but then for the hero to claim she is such a strong intelligent loving person and marvel that she could love him just rubs me wrong. She was going to hand over a weapon that would kill a race of people to a madman. All the way up until the end she was pretty resolute. Anyway the books tend to have immature heroines and alphas males are more ape than man. 100% sure they found forever thanks to the most perfect one and soul and of course lush body. It's pretty standard fare but it numbs and carries away the brain after a day in the real world.
