Language Function: An Introduction to Pragmatic Assessment and Intervention for Higher Order Thinking and Better Literacy, by Ellyn Arwood

Literacy teaching tends to take a structural approach to language, focusing on auditory products or skills such as sounds, morphemes, words, sentences, and vocabulary. However, new research suggests that the majority of English speakers actually think and learn in visual concepts, and that there is a cultural and linguistic mismatch between auditory teaching methods and the way students think and learn. This has important implications for all educators including those who work with students with neurogenic disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders and ADHD.

In her new book, Dr. Ellyn Lucas Arwood outlines a revolutionary four-tiered model of how a learner acquires language, and suggests ways to impose visual language functions onto an auditory language like English in order to improve learning for both neurotypical learners and those with neurogenic disabilities. Dr. Arwood provides tried-and-tested intervention strategies that work with all levels of ability, giving readers the knowledge and confidence to teach learners to become more literate in a way that raises learners' abilities to think and problem solve.

This book takes a fresh look at how language and literacy interact, and will be of interest to educators and special educators, speech and language pathologists, and other professionals who support language learning and development.

Review
The book is well-illustrated with case studies and is full of practical ideas for intervention, as well as handling complicated theory in an accessible way... Thinking about the way language functions is crucial to successful learning and visual language function is emphasised over the traditional auditory function of language as key to this success. A fresh approach, worth reading. -- bulletin

Understanding How People Learn and Become Literate
By H. Kanz
Language Function is a great resource for teachers and parents who are interested in understanding the learning process--or finding out what happens in the brain as people become literate. Arwood weaves her Neuro-Semantic Language Learning Theory throughout the book and provides numerous examples and case studies to assist the reader in gaining a thorough understanding of the learning process, which can be applied to practice both at home or in the classroom.

As a parent, Arwood's work helped me understand the way my son learns and has enabled me to provide the input and strategies he needs as a learner to continue to increase his language function for both academic and social learning.

As an elementary school teacher in a regular education classroom, I appreciate they way Arwood describes how her theory supports all students, including English language learners and students who have Attention Deficit Disorder. Language Function also includes two chapters that provide numerous examples of how both a primary teacher and a middle elementary teacher have successfully applied the theory in their regular education classrooms.

Finally, I think one of the most important contributions Language Function makes in the area of education is the idea that we, as educators, need to look at individual learners and focus on what they can do rather than on their deficits. With an understanding of the neurobiological process of acquiring concepts provided in Language Function, we can provide instruction that matches with the way our children and students learn best.

Language Function provides a wealth of information all parents and teachers should know. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved with education or interested helping children learn and feel successful as learners.

Clink! Clankety-bang! Thump-whirr! That's the sound of Papa at work. Although he is an inventor, he has never made anything that works perfectly, and that's because he hasn't yet found a truly fantastic idea. But when he takes his family fishing on Lake Michigan, his daughter Virena asks, "Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a fish?"—and Papa is off to his workshop. With a lot of persistence and a little bit of help, Papa—who is based on the real-life inventor Lodner Phillips—creates a submarine that can take his family for a trip to the bottom of Lake Michigan.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-This picture book is a fictional account based on events in the life of eccentric inventor Lodner Phillips as told from the perspective of his daughter, Virena. Papa theorizes and tinkers but never succeeds. Finally, while the family is dropping lines from a pier into Lake Michigan, his daughter asks, "have you ever wondered what it's like to be a fish?" Immediately the man dashes back to his workshop and soon produces one of the world's earliest submarines, the Whitefish. Children will delight in the way Virena is the catalyst for her father's successive improvements to his primitive vessel as she continues to ask questions: about how fish move through water, stay dry, and know where they are going. Kulikov's luminous, playful, detailed illustrations on full-bleed spreads incorporate a variety of perspectives, including close-up views of fish and of Papa underwater and cutaway diagrams of his creations. An afterword is included. The exuberant and inquisitive tone of this book is sure to entertain curious children.-Anne Barreca, New York Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
There’s a rich history of batty inventor/tinkerer dads in children’s books, and the girl narrator’s father in this book could hang with the best of them. That he’s based on a real mid-nineteenth-century person makes it all the better. Whether Papa’s spectacular failures have been great ideas (steam-powered roller skates) or not-so-great (edible socks), “not once has Papa invented anything that works perfectly.” But inspiration flashes when the family is out fishing in the lake—a mechanical fish. Iteration after iteration of his rudimentary submarine ends in lighthearted disaster, each time the object growing more complex and preposterous until he’s finally come up with a vessel just crazy enough to work. Fleming festoons her glib narrative with read-aloud treats of “Clacketa-claketa-clacketa!” and “Clink! Clankety-bang! Thump-whirr!” Meanwhile, Kulikov dishes out some tall-tale-worthy artwork and cut-out designs somewhere between Leonardo da Vinci and Rube Goldberg. A closing note talks about Fleming’s inspiration, the inventor Lodner Phillips, who really did take his family for an underwater spin in Lake Michigan in 1851. Grades K-2. --Ian Chipman

A Favorite Book about Inventors and the Tinkering Process
By Janelle Durham
I teach a STEM enrichment class for kids age 3 - 6, so I've read a lot of books about inventors, and this is one of my favorites (it made my list of most recommended books. (Find the full list on my blog: Inventors of Tomorrow. It also includes If I Built a House, Most Magnificent Thing, Inventor McGregor...) We read this book when we study Submarines (ideas for hands-on kids' experiments are also available on my blog.) It's a silly read-aloud, with some repeating motifs the kids like (like every time an invention fails, Papa says "it almost worked." We see Papa work through several attempts at an invention, and keep on trying and revising (keys to the tinkering mindset) and then get to celebrate his eventual success.

4.5 Stars
By E. Kennen
Papa's an inventor... or, well, he would be, except none of his ideas quite pan out as expected. So takes a break from tinkering by taking his family fishing. But that wandering, wondering mind of his is irrepressible. What would being a fish be like? Papa decides to find out by making a submarine. Only it doesn't pan out so well. Neither does his second attempt. Nor his third...

This cute, whimsical story is based loosely on the real life of an obscure inventor, Lobner Phillips. Papa's interactions with his family and the way he gradually hones in on a working submarine model are equal parts entertaining and educational. The detailed illustrations add well to the exuberance of this book. A cute, methodical take on "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again."

3 Year Old Loves it!
By Annette
We recently checked this book out at the library, and my son LOVES it! He asks for it over and over again. It's very cleverly written, educational, and unique. My son laughs really hard at some parts of the story, he even has portions of it memorized. I will be buying this book. As a parent and avid reader, I love Papa's Mechanical Fish. I highly recommend checking it out at the library or buying it because it's a delight!

Wonderful story
By Jennifer Kelley
The story begins in Poland, where a young Jewish girl is trained by her grandmother to be a healer, a witch, a shaman. She learns to help people--mostly women, with problems they wouldn't take to a man, and to fight demons. When tragedy strikes, she and her sister travel to America, where "they don't let you burn".
This novella is a mixture of fantasy, fairy tale, historical novel, feminism, all wrapped up into an engrossing story.

Beautifully Conceived and Written
By Kelly Garbato
(Caution: minor spoilers below!)

Born in Bialystok, Poland at the turn of the century, Deborah is possessed of the power like her bubbe. Deborah is a witch, and spends her summers in training with grandmother Hannah: learning to assist in childbirth, cure common ailments, terminate unwanted pregnancies, craft blessings and talismans, and drive away demons. But Deborah’s magic is little help against the growing tide of anti-Semitism sweeping through Europe; and when the Cossacks lay waste to Hannah’s village, killing Deborah’s beloved grandmother and mentor, it becomes clear to her family that they must escape to America. America, where “they don’t let you burn.”

While the family – mother, father, and sister Shayna – work overtime to save enough money for the trip, Deborah discovers a horrifying secret. There, among grandmother’s sparse belongings, is a mysterious contract: “The ink seemed to be made of blood and vomit. A stench like cows*** rose off the page. My stomach churned every time I unfolded the paper.” When a demon tries to steal her newborn brother Yeshua, Deborah realizes that her grandmother did the unthinkable: traded her daughter’s next child in exchange for the family’s safe passage to America. Though Deborah succeeds in destroying the contract, it’s at great personal cost; and while Deborah and Shayna eventually make it to the New World, they’re ultimately unable to escape the lilit’s clutches.

BURNING GIRLS is a beautiful and captivating story from start to finish. Schanoes draws from multiple genres – dark fantasy, magical realism, fairy tales, historical fiction – seamlessly weaving these threads together to create a bewitching tapestry filled with horror and heartbreak. (The Białystok pogrom, during which between 81 and 88 people were murdered and another 80 injured, occurred in June 1906; and the Asch building was the site of the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.) This could easily be a full-length novel (frankly, I’d love to see it on the big screen!) but works beautifully as a novella.

The story’s title, which is referenced throughout the plot and in myriad ways (is Deborah not a girl on fire when she uses the power of the evil eye to set bubbe’s contract aflame?), sets the stage for a rather shocking climax. Schanoes also plays with language in interesting ways; take, for example, Deborah’s abrupt transition from spending her days in friend Yetta’s sweetshop to slaving away in a NYC sweatshop.

Whether you’re interested in fantasy or feminism, worker’s rights or the persecution of Jews throughout history, you owe it to yourself to check out BURNING GIRLS. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Wow... such a great story for such short lenght
By Yotafura
Wow.... This book was excellent! Realism mixed with folklore mixed with fairy-tales, this is a great read (where is my miniseries adaptation??) The characters are wonderfully rounded without giving too much away, their reactions/thoughts make for wonderful, unique characters, each with their own distinctive voice, and I was left wanting for so much more... The folklore tied to the story as well, wonderfully detailed and yet fitting perfectly with the more realistic points of it.

The ending was hard to get through. Not sure if I can call it unfitting, but it sure was jarring... I hope/wish there will be another story tied if not to the characters, to this universe!

Melissa Explains It All: Tales from My Abnormally Normal Life, by Melissa Joan Hart

Melissa Joan Hart explained it all-from dating to bullies-in her groundbreaking role as Clarissa Darling on Clarissa Explains It All. She cast a spell on millions more viewers as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Now, in Melissa Explains It All, Melissa tells the frank and funny behind-the-scenes stories from her extraordinary past and her refreshingly normal present.

Melissa has been entertaining audiences most of her life; when there were no girls named Melissa on her favorite show, the forceful four year old decided she'd get on television her way. From that moment on, Melissa has shown a singular determination and focus-whether it's for booking three national commercials so her dad would build her a tree house or for nailing the audition for Clarissa.

From her first commercial to her current starring role in ABC Family's hit Melissa and Joey, Hart never let fame go to her head. She always had one foot in Hollywood and one foot in reality-and still does. Melissa makes us laugh along with her as she talks about:

--guest appearances in shows like Saturday Night Live and The Equalizer
--auditioning for Punky Brewster and Clarissa
--her early Broadway days
--wacky parties she's thrown and attended
-- the actors who influenced her and whom she befriended, worked with and competed against
--her experiences both on and off-set-with Sabrina's Salem the Cat and Elvis the Alligator on Clarissa
--how she met the love of her life at the Kentucky Derby
Melissa Joan Hart explains all that she's learned along the way-what's kept her grounded, normal and working when others have not been so fortunate-and that she's the approachable, hilarious girl-next-door her fans have always thought she'd be.

Written with humor and a bit of arrogance
By S. Silva
I enjoy reading biographies and I tend to have one going most of the time, even if I am reading other books as well. This story was interesting and did enjoy it. It was a bit surface and Melissa writes with an arrogance that took me awhile to get used to. She also writes with humor, even if she tries too hard to be funny at times. I did finish it and I would recommend it if you are looking for a biography without a whole lot of substance.

In the Name of God: The True Story of the Fight to Save Children from Faith-Healing Homicide, by Cameron Stauth

An anonymous caller tells a detective in a small Oregon town that a woman has just bitten off a man's finger. But the man is not the victim, the caller says. The woman is. She's being held against her will by a group of faith-healing fanatics who are trying to cure her depression with violent exorcisms.

The detective rescues her, but she is afraid to press charges against the people in her church. Then the detective gets an even more ominous message: Children in the church have been dying mysteriously for years, and now several more are in immediate peril, facing blindness, disability, and death.

Unwilling to stand by and allow more children to suffer, the anonymous caller -- a church insider -- risks everything to work with three detectives and a lone prosecutor to fight faith-based child abuse, and to change the laws that protect its perpetrators. They are joined by a mother who'd suffered a faith-healing tragedy herself, and afterwards dedicated her life to saving others from the same fate.

Masterfully written by author Cameron Stauth, In the Name of God tells the true story of their heroic mission, which resulted in a historic series of sensational trials that exposed the darkest secret of American fundamentalism, and revealed the shameful political deals that have allowed thousands of children to die at the hands of their own parents -- legally.

Though the battle against faith-healing abuse continues around the country, the victory in Oregon has lit the path to a better future, in which no child need die because of a parent's beliefs.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In 2008, the small town of Oregon City, Oregon, became the epicenter of the legal battle to end the practice of faith healing that denied medical treatment for children. The Followers of Christ Church had nineteenth-century roots in Clackamas County, whose culture included believers and those who tolerated them, who both bought into ideals of the Right to raise children without government interference. The Followers of Christ’s faith-healing fundamentalist beliefs were supported on the national level by the powerful Church of Christ, Scientist. But a series of child homicides drew the attention of those determined to make sure that children didn’t suffer and die from illnesses left untreated. Fighting against religious shield laws that protect parents who refuse medical treatment for their children, a team of investigators and prosecutors worked with a Followers insider and a former believer and advocate who’d lost her own child to faith healing. Stauth offers a dramatic account, broad enough to include historical perspective on the Great Awakening and the prophets and religious figures who shaped the faith-healing fundamentalists, and intimate enough to cover the families who struggled to reconcile love for their children with unyielding faith in their beliefs that dictated they take no action, other than prayer, to save their children’s lives. A powerful, shocking story. --Vanessa Bush

Review

“Stauth offers a dramatic account, broad enough to include historical perspective on the Great Awakening and the prophets and religious figures who shaped the faith-healing fundamentalists, and intimate enough to cover the families who struggled to reconcile love for their children with unyielding faith in their beliefs that dictated they take no action, other than prayer, to save their children's lives. A powerful, shocking story.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“A powerful tale of religious beliefs gone awry.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“In the compulsively readable In the Name of God: The True Story of the Fight to Save Children From Faith-Healing Homicide, Portland reporter Cameron Stauth interweaves two parallel narratives, both equally compelling.” ―The Oregonian

“Stauth's book is a compelling look at a religious cult that appeared to be flourishing, but was consuming itself from within. In the Name of God reads almost like a novel, as Stauth gets into the mindset and emotions of its many participants. Many readers will find it difficult to put down; others may have difficulty coming to grips with the horrifying situations that these loving parents found themselves in.” ―The Oklahoman

“In the Name of God shows how wrong people can go when they fail to recognize that medical technologies are gifts from God, too, and that ‘medical miracles' are just that. Cameron Stauth deserves loud applause for uncovering the truth. He deserves our prayers that what he has found will help expose the differences between religions that empower people and cults that weaken them and, sometimes, kill them.” ―Keith Ablow, M.D., New York Times bestselling author

“In the Name of God takes you to an America where religious extremism practiced in isolation leads to deadly consequences for children. Fortunately this unforgettable book also brings us heroes who refuse to let the ignorant and the malevolent use faith to escape their crimes. If you are concerned about the balance between religion and justice you must read this book.” ―Michael D'Antonio, author of Mortal Sins

“America has a number of fascinating criminal subcultures that remain all but hidden from public view. One of them has now been exposed in a startling new book by Cameron Stauth. In the Name of God is a definitive account of the secret, deadly history of faith healing in the U.S. Stauth's research has uncovered some of the worst things people do to one another under the guise of religion, casting much-needed light on this criminal darkness.” ―Stephen Singular, author of When Men Become Gods

“Only a bold, highly gifted writer could take a sickeningly true crime story like this one, and with the delicate skill of a high-wire artist craft it into a non-judgmental nail-biter. Under the author's sensitive, yet humorous pen, the colorful personalities in this eye-opening drama pulse with lifeblood. This is a vitally important book. Historically accurate accounts such as Cameron Stauth's breathtaking masterpiece, In the Name of God, rip the skin off of America's stench-filled underbelly, bringing the gasping promise of healing, fresh air, and the determined assurance of a better tomorrow.” ―Susan Ray Schmidt, author of Favorite Wife: Escape from Polygamy

“Powerful, moving and painstakingly researched, Cameron Stauth's In the Name of God illuminates the little-known culture of faith healing in America, and shows us why it is so important for all Americans to stand together and demand action and intervention to save the lives of its youngest victims. These children have no voice, so they need all of us to advocate on their behalf.” ―Lisa Pulitzer, New York Times bestselling author

“Stauth is a talented and graceful writer and a tireless reporter. ” ―The New York Times on The Franchise

“A book of insight, power and wit. ” ―The San Francisco Chronicle on The Golden Boys

“A riveting picture of network television -- one of the best yet.” ―Publishers Weekly on The Sweeps

“Extraordinarily compelling and engaging.” ―Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler's List, on The Manhunter

“A remarkable work by an excellent writer...” ―D.S. Khalsa, M.D., on Healing the New Childhood Epidemics

“I strongly recommend it.” ―Deepak Chopra, M.D., on Meditation as Medicine

“Fascinating and magnetically appealing...” ―Booklist on Brain Longevity

Must Read...accurate look into the lives of Followers of Christ cult members
By lkm
Couldn't put it down once I started reading...This book is about my relatives. I was born into this faith. It is an accurate look into the lives of the Followers of Christ cult. I lived this book. I could add so much more that would fill volumes on the suffering of innocent children because of this faith. Cameron captured the disturbing atmosphere within the houses when children died. Heart wrenching.
There are other stories coming out since this book debuted on another branch of the same faith and families in Idaho.I am the source of those stories. To continue following recent new developements join me at FB group Silent Cries Faces Of Religious Abuse. I hope Cameron Stauth will be able to write a follow up story on how we are able to change Idaho laws to protect the children. Please recommend this book to all of your friends. I do.

Gripping
By Stephen Barrett
The book provides a fascinating look into the minds and hearts of anti-medical cultists and their critics and details the struggle of Rita Swan and others to protect children from parents who deny medical care to their children. Portions of the struggle are so gripping that I had difficulty putting the book down until I found out what happens at the end.

A true story that reads like a great novel.
By Eugene Emge
A true story that reads like a great novel. It is the most positive and hopeful book I have read in years despite some gruesome details. It is a crime story with excellent police investigative details and courtroom drama. It is the story of how a few people working together can make a difference. It is a psychological masterpiece. One gets into the minds and hearts of every character, from the protagonists, the police, the perpetrators, the victims, the prosecutors, the jurors. It is a story of empathy.

The Crooked Mirror: A Memoir of Polish-Jewish Reconciliation, by Louise Steinman

A lyrical literary memoir that explores the exhilarating, discomforting, and ultimately healing process of Polish-Jewish reconciliation taking place in Poland today

Although an estimated 80 percent of American Jews are of Polish descent, many in the postwar generation and those born later know little about their families’ connection to their ancestral home. In fact, many Jews continue to think of Poland as a bastion of anti-Semitism, since nearly the entire population of Polish Jewry was killed in the Holocaust. The reality is more complex: although German-occupied Poland was the site of great persecution towards Jews, it was also the epicenter of European Jewish life for centuries. Louise Steinman sets out to examine the burgeoning Polish-Jewish reconciliation movement through the lens of her own family's history, joining the ranks of Jews of Polish descent who are confronting both Poland’s heroism and occupation-afflicted atrocities, and who are seeking to reconnect with their families’ Polish roots

From Booklist
In 1945, an American diplomat heard about the massacre of Polish Jews who tried to reclaim their property from their Gentile neighbors after they survived the Holocaust. He remarked that Hitler purged Poland of Jews, but the Poles had not purged themselves of their legacy of anti-Semitism. Undaunted, Steinman, of Polish Jewish descent, agreed to join a meeting of American Jews, Poles, and a variety of other interested parties as part of an ongoing effort at Polish Jewish reconciliation. The result is a memoir that is revealing, touching, yet often unsatisfying. As participants relate their individual experiences, we are justifiably reminded that Gentile Poles also suffered horribly under the Nazis, and that countless Poles risked life and limb to help their Jewish neighbors to survive. By definition, most of the participants are men and women of goodwill interested in healing wounds. But Steinman’s avoidance of the persistence of virulent anti-Semitism among some Poles is frustrating. Still, this is an interesting account of a worthy effort to move beyond a tortured past. --Jay Freeman

Review
“Steinman’s elegiac book is a powerful reminder of how ideologies can become ‘crooked mirror[s]’ that distort reality and destroy lives, cultures and nations.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Lyrical yet magesterial...heartfelt, poignant, redemptive, and brave.” —Los Angeles Review of Books

“Readers can be grateful to Ms. Steinman for bearing witness to those seeds of understanding being planted in lands where so much blood flowed.” —The Wall Street Journal

“[Steinman] achieves something close to peace with those struggling intensely to understand and rectify Poland’s Jewish past.” —Foreign Affairs

“Louise Steinman's story is heroic in all the old senses of the word: a journey of a literal sort; a journey into the terrible past; and a journey into her own soul. Unblinking, scrupulous and enduring.” —Alexandra Fuller, author of Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight

“An event like the Holocaust not only takes a toll of dead and traumatizes the survivors. It leaves its mark on later generations as well—the children and grandchildren of the families of victims, perpetrators, and bystanders. This is the territory Louise Steinman explores, with great feeling and with hope, in The Crooked Mirror.” —Adam Hochschild, author of To End All Wars

“Louise Steinman has written the most extraordinary travel book I have ever read—about a journey to nightmare, through unmarked mass graveyards and dark haunted Polish and Ukrainian streets. The miracle is that shattering light breaks repeatedly into this otherwise dark journey. Jews—religious and secular—will have many reasons to read this book.  As a Christian, I urge other Christians to read every page of The Crooked Mirror, to face evil again, and to better understand redemption.” —Richard Rodriguez, author of Darling: A Spiritual Autobiography

“The Crooked Mirror is both provocative and ultimately redemptive, a book that will appeal to a wide audience of readers who care about history, genealogy, and the possibility of peace between estranged peoples.” —Jonathan Kirsch, author of The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan

"Save this Jewish baby for the Jew in whom you believe."
By T. Patrick Killough
Read Louise Steinman's coming (November 2013) THE CROOKED MIROR: A MEMOIR OF POLISH-JEWISH RECONCILIATION, and come away with two sets of impressions, one sweeping and broad and the other beautifully told little stories in concrete detail. They instance in concrete situations and through named real persons obstacles to reconciliation that must be tackled one by one: misunderstandings, prejudice, ignorance, wrongs, hurts, apologies and non-apologies regarding Poland and the 800-plus years before Hitler and Stalin when Jews were bone of Poland's bone.

-- (I) The sweeping general impression that will stay with you after details are fogotten is this: how unfathomably deep and seemingly unspannable is the chasm between Jews and non-Jews of Poland and Poland's diaspora! How very plucky and wonderful it is, therefore, that the few faltering efforts at reconciliation instanced in THE CROOKED MIROR have accomplished what little they have as of 2013.

-- (II) The rest of this review will dwell on seven or eight details encountered by author Louise Steinman between 1988 and today as she made trip after trip to Poland, trying always to be fair to and understand Jews and Christians alike.

***************

Don Singer really was "the Zen Rabbi of Malibu." In 1988 and later sometimes during Friday evening services attended by Louise and her second husband, both at the time only lightly observant Jews, Rabbi Singer told of his five visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau as principal rabbi in interfaith gatherings called the Bearing Witness Retreat. Don's artist father had taken his teenage son in the 1950s to the Nazi death camp at Dachau.

To the Rabbi, Israel's most radical command from God to Jews is "You shall love the stranger as yourself, for you were a stranger in Egypt, and you know the heart of a stranger." In his visits to Poland Don decided that Jews understood Poles who had "received a bum rap." He felt called to bring Poles and Jews together. And he passed this sense of inspiration leading into mission along to American writer and teacher Louise Steinman.

Steinman decided to probe Poland, to the extent that interviewing and finding records allowed, in search of her own roots, her paternal and maternal ancestors. THE CROOKED MIRROR retraces her steps, many frustrating and pained.

Early on, a computer search by Louise unearthed a memorial book in Yiddish about Radomsk, one of the places in Poland where her family had long lived. Energized by an emerging English translation of that memorial book, Steinman visits Poland again and again. She also tells of early efforts by others in Germany and Poland to find grounds for reconciliation. She is told of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising against occupying Germans that began in April 1943. Next came the 1944 general Warsaw Rising that ended in virtual destruction of Poland's capital, while the Red Army stood idle ten miles away across the Vistula River. Louise Steinman visited Jewish cemeteries. In ancestral Radomsk Steinman visited and revisited the Regional History Museum with almost no relics of Jews.

She tells the story of a 1992 visit by a London Jewish journalist to ancestral Krakow. There he met a young Catholic Pole. The journalist "wrote what the young man confided in him: 'that, as a believer, a student of ancient history and a practicing Catholic, it no longer caused him any difficulty to accept that Jesus was a Jew. 'But in no way,' he said, 'am I able to accept that Our Holy Virgin Mary, the Queen of he Crown of Poland, as we like to call her, was a Jewess'" (Ch. 9).

An actress-singer in L'vov, Ukraine, took the author (one of whose grandmothers was Ukrainian) and an American Jewish traveling companion to a late evening meeting five stories up in an old stone apartment building. For two hours the Ukrainians sang traditional songs for their visitors. At the end one said, "Welcome home!"

In Krakow they heard how Jews wept when the hearse of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski (1866 -1935) rolled by. "The general had been a bulwark against the anti-Semitic nationalists. His demise marked the beginnings of boycotts against Jewish businesses and quotas on Jews attending university that intensified in the years leading up to the war" (Ch. 14).

A question often asked about Poles and their attitudes by Jewish Cheryl, the author's frequent travel companion, was "Do they miss us?" (Ch. 16). Evidence gradually builds up throughout the narrative that either the remaining non-Jewish Poles already miss the millions of Jews exterminated in the Shoah or are painfully, often clumsily, teaching themselves how and why to miss them, to appreciate what Jews did for Poland down the centuries. Unlike Communist-controlled East Germans, Poles had no West Poland as a living showcase of nearby "otherness." For there were not enough Jews left anywhere in Poland. Jew had to be sought not spatially but in history.

Slowly non-Jewish Poles, when they research Polish history, find that yiddish-speaking Jews "were Europeans before all else. The Jews were the yeast of that society" (Ch. 16).

In Chapter 20, "Among the Odd Believers," Louise Steinman meditates almost mystically on the ever shifting "borderlands" of Eastern Europe: Lithuania one day, the USSR the next or first Poland, next Austria-Hungary. The thought arises that for Jews in Poland, as yiddish speaking natural "Europeans," perhaps changes of sovereigns were less traumatic than for larger nationalities longer rooted in particular soils.

Chapter 21 describes Tykocin a particular tragedy for Jews of the Second World War and muses that, yes, there had always been friction. Nonetheless, "Catholics and Jews traded, they joked. They were used to each other. They lived this way, together, for hundreds of years." Nowadays there is a moving Purim play in this town, played by non-Jews. Reconciliation takes many forms.

Chapter 25. "The Seer," is haunting and lingers in readers' memories. The city is Lublin and these days the focus of reconciliation is its Grodzka Gate, once the entry point at one end of the Royal Way into the Jewish section (1/3 of Lublin's population in 1939) and to the Castle Hill beyond it. Since 2004 artists have built a powerful interfaith pageant around the Grodzka Gate. In displayed blueprints and models, the city's old way of life has been recreated.

An organizer of that pageant, which annually varies it productions, called "Mysteries," drew the author's attention to a middle-aged Catholic priest, Father Jakub Weksler-Waszkinel. "Around his neck he wears a Star of David with a crucifix insert." He had two sets of parents, first Jewish, then Catholic. Born to Jewish parents in 1943, infant Yakub Weksler was given by Batia his mother to be raised by a devoutly Catholic acquaintance, Emilia Waszkinel. The Waszkinels would have been executed if caught by Nazis (as the boy's birth parents -- tailor Jakub and Batia Weksler actually were). Seeing frightened Emilia's hesitation, Batia Weksler won Emilia over with one simple argument: "Save this Jewish baby for the Jew in whom you believe."

I hope that this perhaps too long review gives you enough of the flavor of THE CROOKED MIRROR: A MEMOIR OF POLISH-JEWISH RECONCILIATON. The book is low key in describing incidents, personalities and contradictory attitudes both destructive and constructive. But the cumulative effect is, I think, this: Jewish-Polish reconciliation is far harder than a reader thinks before he opens THE CROOKED MIRROR. So God bless anyone, Jewish or non-Jewish, who patiently, tessera by tessera, builds this emerging mosaic of Polish-Jewish reconciliation.

The major drawback in my edition of THE CROOKED MIRROR is that it has no maps. Unless you already have imprinted in your head a decent map of Poland, Lithuania, the USSR, Ukraine, Austria-Hungary, etc. you will have to consult outside atlases.

Superb Account of Polish-Jewish History and Relations
By Craig Stephans
The Crooked Mirror is a startling, eloquently written memoir of the author's explorations of the history of Poland's Jewish residents mainly during the WWII era. The book reads like part memoir, part history and part biography. Steinman adroitly transitions back and forth from present to past. Her writing follows her several trips to Poland and surrounding areas in attempts to learn of the Jewish past of Poland and also the contemporary relations of the people of Poland and their posture toward their past.

This book reveals the tragic, fascinating history of Jews in Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania. It brings readers into the horrific events of WWII and post-WWII. More than a mere history lesson, The Crooked Mirror follows the author and her friend in their discoveries of their own Jewish ancestors past and how it affects those living. The author becomes intimately involved in the current processes of healing and reconciliation among the Polish.

The writing is superb throughout. At times, the author may become a bit detailed in her travel narratives (i.e. her meals, the weather--insignificant elements), but overall she keeps the pace moving while zeroing in on significant events, interactions and history.

This is a profound contribution to sustain the commitment to never forgetting and to never allowing what happened to happen again. I recommend this book to all readers.

Poland is Definitely Complicated!
By Sylviastel
Louise Steinman's memoir is about her own personal journey and pilgrimages to Poland in search for her family's history before World War II and during the Holocaust. I was first hesitant to read the book because my parents were Polish Catholics who were children during the war. Since she is Jewish, I expected her to be quite harsh and critical about Poland itself. I was surprised to read about her personal journey and her enlightenment in researching the country's Jewish-Christian relations.

Somehow despite our differences, I found Steinman to be open-minded and objective about Poland itself. She understands the country's hardships during World War II and that Polish non-Jews would have been executed with their entire families for helping a Polish Jew to survive. She wants to know about the Polish Jews and Polish Catholics who lived side by side for centuries without much incidents of genocide and prejudice. Perhaps, historians and scholars need to know how these two groups survived and thrived together. We must also learn about their relationships and the possibility of inter-marriage between the two groups as well.

I truly believe that there is more to Polish Jewish-Catholic relations than previously thought. We need to know more before my parents and others of their generation pass on to the next life. There is too much fighting, hatred, and bitterness going on in the world even now. It's not just a book about reconciliation but about healing and forgiveness. Louise Steinman is an enlightened intelligent woman who sees beyond the obvious and looks for more.

I felt like I was on Louise's journey as well. She makes the reader feel at home with her without being judgmental or critical. Upon her discoveries, she finds a relative who lives miles away from her. She also learns about the life before the war for Jews and Christian in Radomska, Poland.

I don't think she is done yet with Poland nor am I who believes that there is more out there to be studied and analyzed.
