Starred Review. Gladstone outdoes himself in this exciting and imaginative return to the brilliantly realized world of Three Parts Dead. In the city of Dresediel Lex, the civic water supply is managed by the magical Concern of Red King Consolidated (RKC). When one of their reservoirs is contaminated with demonic Tzimet, RKC risk assessor Caleb Altemoc is assigned to determine the cause and manage relations with Heartstone, an RKC acquisition with intimate links to the old Quechal gods. With the help of an enigmatic woman named Mal, who's considered crazy even by other death-defying cliff runners, Caleb discovers that the wars in which the old gods fell still cast a long shadow over the present day, posing a threat to the city and beyond. The alternate Los Angeles that is Dresediel Lex is charged with its own versions of ethnic tensions and environmental strain, and Caleb is an engaging protagonist for this taut and unique blend of legal drama, fantasy, and noir. Agent: Weronika Janczuk, Lynn Franklin Associates, in association with D4EO Literary. (Nov.)
From Booklist
Caleb Altemoc, risk manager for Red King Consolidated and part-time gambler, is sent to deal with an infestation of tzimet—shadow demons—at Bright Mirror reservoir. In the process, he encounters the maddening, magnificent Mal, a cliff runner who is far beyond his skill. She is his only lead to those responsible for the infestation and vanishes when he pursues her. Bright Mirror is not the only place attacked. Caleb’s father, Temoc, priest of the old gods and wanted terrorist, claims to be innocent of responsibility. The uncertainty about these attacks threatens a merger between Red King Consolidated and Heartstone. A contract is negotiated based on the continued slumber of the twin serpents Achal and Aquel. The serpents are made restless by a conspiracy that threatens the very fabric of the city. Caleb, to protect not only the city of Dresediel Lex but the people he loves, must make a series of quite unexpected decisions and come to terms with his difficult past. Two Serpents Rise is an epic, solidly city-based fantasy with strong characters and a wonderfully built world. It’s also a fast-paced thriller, thoroughly entertaining. --Regina Schroeder

“I really liked it. . . . It's steampunk/religious/thriller/alt-verse/fantasy. It's gritty and complicated but I enjoyed it a lot because it was different. . . . Definitely on board for another!” ―Felicia Day, writer, producer, and star of The Guild, on Three Parts Dead
“One of the best debut fantasy novels I've read in years. . . an entertaining and intelligent story . . . . Fans of genre-bending pulp, courtroom dramas, well-built worlds, interesting characters and new paradigms of magic and power will be just as pleased by this book as I was. And just as anxiously awaiting Gladstone's next one.” ―io9, on Three Parts Dead
“A book which intrigued, thrilled, and delighted me by turns, and had me cackling in righteous satisfaction at the conclusion. . . . this is a seriously good book, and Max Gladstone is a writer to watch out for.” ―Strange Horizons, on Three Parts Dead
“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo meets The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms.... Three Parts Dead elevates the word "awesome" back to its godly context with its world building, compelling characters, and action that doesn't let up until the last page.... I'll be eagerly awaiting whatever he chooses to write next.” ―All Things Urban Fantasy ("five-bat, near-perfect" review)
“Neil Gaiman and Jim Butcher are conjured for a China Miéville story about magical lawyers trying to revive a dead God in a steampunk city. Recommended: Hell yes!” ―Geek Speak Magazine, on Three Parts Dead

The Sequel Shines as Bright as the Original
By Geonn W. Cannon
This book takes place before the events of Three Parts Dead and really doesn't have much to do with the story of that book. They take place in the same world and the same rules apply, but you can easily read this without having read the first book and you won't miss much. Instead of continuing a story, as most sequels are tasked, this book provides a secondary perspective of the world. Last time around I compared Gladstone to China Miéville, and that comparison fits. Perdido Street Station, The Scar, and Iron Council form a trilogy that creates a vast and complex world (Bas-Lag) while still telling compelling individual stories.
If you read the first novel and you're wary about jumping in to a whole new story, don't be. This story is just as good (maybe even better) than the first novel. If you're afraid that you'll miss Tara, put the fears aside because this book has characters you'll love just as much (Teo needs her own novel... I love that lady). This series is a daunting task for a new author. It would be challenging even for an established talent. "Three Parts Dead" made me excited about what he hoped to pull off, and "Two Serpents Rise" made me confident he could pull it off. He may not have the back catalogue of someone like Neil Gaiman, but that only means you're getting in on the ground floor of an author everyone will be talking about in a few years.
Whatever story Max Gladstone decides to tell next, whichever piece of his world he decides to unveil, and who he chooses to be our guide, I'm definitely going to be camped out at the front of the line.

Not your average fantasy
By Vanessa C
Dresediel Lex--desert city of 16 million--is dependent on reservoirs to provide its citizens with water, so when a demon infests a crucial supply it's Caleb who's sent to solve the problem. While there Caleb stumbles across the wild Mal, a cliff runner in the wrong place at the wrong time who escapes before he can question her. Could she have witnessed the arrival of the demon or was her presence more nefarious?
When Caleb reports his findings to his boss, the King in Red (skeletal Craftsman, owner of Red King Consolidated, de facto ruler of the city Dresediel Lex), he's also tasked with figuring out the cause of the infestation. Was it a mistake or was it intentional? Fingers point to none other than Caleb's father, the last priest of the city's old gods and leader of the True Quechal terrorists. Despite his estrangement from his father, Caleb isn't convinced it was him and decides to go looking for the missing cliff runner to find out what she saw--a task easier said than done.
What follows those dense beginning chapters of set-up reminds me of the big black pyramid that's the heart of the city of Dresediel Lex: brick by brick Gladstone's story builds in intensity until you're left gasping for air by the time you reach the top.
Gladstone's first novel, Three Parts Dead, introduced us to this fascinating world of gods, Craftsmen, and even the cities themselves--these books are urban fantasy, legal thrillers, steampunk, and epic fantasy all rolled into one novel. "Two Serpents Rise" isn't a sequel to the first novel, but since it is set in the same world there is a sense of continuity. You don't have to have read "Three Parts Dead" to understand "Two Serpents Rise", but it wouldn't hurt and "Three Parts Dead" is a novel worth reading.
"Three Parts Dead" was a debut novel, and had hardly anything for me to complain about it was so well written. Gladstone's second novel is even better. My main complaint in "Three Parts Dead" was the PoV issues arising from the omniscient-style narrative, but since "Two Serpents Rise" is told almost exclusively from Caleb's viewpoint it's a non-issue here. Also, the main character of "Three Parts Dead" didn't have much of a character arc, but here Caleb is a very fascinating character who struggles with the choices he's made. He's full of contradictions and yet his actions make sense. I particularly enjoyed reading his conversations with his friend Teo--they're snappy and she really makes Caleb look at himself more objectively.
Like in "Three Parts Dead", here the city is an important element of the story and the King in Red holds Dresediel Lex together by the skin of his teeth (if he had skin). It has its slums, its former gods and their believers who won't give up, industries--and of course the great pyramid at the center where the King in Red does business, but where sixty years ago the priests of the city sacrificed people to satisfy their hungry gods. We follow Caleb as he goes to work, tracks Mal, and tries to do his job in a city that's wild, dangerous, and beautiful.
The story is a complicated one with twists and turns, the novel moving forward almost effortlessly despite the mountain of information Gladstone throws at you. There were a few things that still confused me, however, because they were left unexplained, and sometimes I had a hard time following his description of important events because they were less literal and more impressionistic. Fortunately, despite these glitches, "Two Serpents Rise" was very fun to read because of its creativity and imagery. By the end Gladstone doesn't disappoint, having spent the entire book building up to the moment when everything collides. I'm very interested in seeing Caleb's next story if Gladstone decides to write another.

Why conquer, kill and enslave those gods of course!
By Pabkins
Two Serpents Rise takes place in a world where a host of gods really does exist and magic is real. So I ask you: what would you do? Why conquer, kill and enslave those gods of course! Ok well somebody would, especially if your loved ones had been sacrifices…
In a massive modern city Dresediel Lex runs on craftpower instead of divine power and a company called RKC (Red King Consolidated) provides the much needed water to everyone. Before the god wars this desert city by the sea got their water from the gods via human sacrifice. With the gods gone that needed a new source of water. A craftsman, turned Deathless King who defeated the gods stepped up and took over many of the duties of the old gods. His company thereby providing for the city.
You could actually read Two Serpents Rise without having read the first book Three Parts Dead because both books follow a completely different cast of characters. While it’s nice to get the history, the gods that are present in either book and their forms of religion and worship are also very different. In this particular city/region their gods seem to crave blood and sacrifice. In the city Alt Coulumb, simple worship seemed enough.
We start off right away meeting Caleb who works for RKC in risk management. His life has gotten pretty dull and boring lately but all that changes one night when one of the city’s water supplies is poisoned with demons. Caleb encounters a thrill seeking cliff runner named Mal at the site and gives chase. There is admittedly quite a bit of chasing that happens between these two throughout the book. Zowwy, zing I say! I have to tell you in Max Gladstone’s first book, Three Parts Dead there was no romantic element (as pointed out to me there really couldn’t have been because the book takes place over such a short amount of time, it just wouldn’t have fit). But Two Serpents Rise spans months and its nice to see how the author handles the building of a relationship. I loved seeing the interaction between these two. You could feel the sparks and yet in no way did it dominate the story.
What I loved about Caleb was how stubborn he was. He is the son of the last Priest of the old gods. Having been raised by a religious zealot definitely had an effect on him. He is VERY against religion and has every reason to be.
The characters in this story as well as the city itself are given such great attention that at times I felt like I really knew Caleb. One of my favorite aspects was the way the city itself was described. I found myself wishing I could plug a projector into my brain so the wondrous pictures could be painted for me to really see them because no way could my imagination have done it justice. It was just that amazing. Skyspires instead of skyscrapers, airbuses instead of a regular bus, people ferried around by flying creatures (either sitting on them or with the creatures attached to their backs)…there simply was no end to how amazing Gladstone made this world sound. Someone take my soul now I want a gosh dang ticket to this place.
As I learned from reading Max’s first book, Two Serpents Rise is definitely fantasy but it doesn’t fit snugly into any category – he’s mashing in all sorts of feelings from different subgenres. Heck I don’t think I’ve ever read a fantasy refer to a man’s boxer shorts. In so many ways he makes this world so much like our own that you immediately feel comfortable in it, and yet are still continuously awed by the differences. I believe the main element to this story though, is the mystery. There is a big whodunit here that you get to experience right along with Caleb. And for me it was the best part. I didn’t even bother speculating, I just kicked back and enjoyed the ride.
I can’t possibly recommend this book or fresh new series enough. One thing is for sure Max Gladstone is now one of my favorites.
