About the Author
PHILIPPA LANGLEY is a screenwriter and producer who inaugurated and led the successful archaeological search to locate King Richard III's grave in Leicester. Her 90 minute documentary about the search for King Richard with Channel Four / Darlow Smithson Productions was aired on 4th February 2013. She won the Richard III Society's Robert Hamblin Award in 2012. She lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. The King's Grave is her first book.
MICHAEL JONES is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and member of the British Commission for Military History and now works freelance as a writer and media presenter. He has written eight books, including The King's Mother, his highly-praised biography of Margaret Beaufort which was shortlisted for the Whitfield Prize, and Bosworth 1485: Psychology of a Battle, regarded as a seminal work on Richard III and the battle of Bosworth. He lives in England.

Interesting and exciting

I, like millions of others, watched the telly special about Richard III and the discovery and subsequent actions taken with his remains with rapt attention. I was very excited when I saw this book.
After reading this, the excitement has not diminished. Philippa Langley and her co-author do an excellent job of painting a different portrait of Richard than the skulking, hunched, maniacal figure that Shakespeare and Tudor history have made popular in the eyes of the general public.
Before I get into the finer points of this book, may I take a moment to congratulate the author on her determination to do the impossible. Through sensitive situations and hurdle after hurdle she persevered, bringing history to life in this century in a very real, very physical way. Incredible.
Now on to the book. The King's Grave is more than just a simple story about an archeological dig or a great figure in history. This book is very personal to the author and that much is clear through her writing. The book alternates between retelling the story of Richard's fight against the House of Tudor and the more current efforts to restore his body to a rightful place of honour.
I was impressed by the amount of information in this book and by the way the authors delivered it. I was never bored or threatening to skim through chapters as is often the case with historical books of any length. I particularly enjoyed the sections of the book that focused on identification of the remains and the scientific techniques used to do so.
Personally, I like the idea that Richard III may have been the chivalrous and noble warrior that we want to think of when we picture a former king of England. He was, after all, the final king to stand before the world representing the House of York, so no matter what, I think he deserved a proper burial and recognition as such.
The way the authors represented the civil disputes and eventual war between Richard and the Tudors was better than I would have expected. I thought there would be a considerable amount of prejudice in the retelling, as the author was very close to the situation of Richard's identification. Instead, it was a rather impartial and a pretty complete recounting of the long ago events.
I honestly think this book made history more exciting. I would certainly recommend this to anyone interested in the life of this former king, or history in general. You do not have to be an expert on the subject to enjoy it.

Both the history and the story of how the dig happened

This is a book written by two people. One, Philippa Jones, tells the story from the concept of looking for the grave to trying to get the body reburied in a style that she feels is proper for England's last warrior king. Michael Langley wanted to find the church, and is the professional archeologist who did so. In many ways they were partners in the efforts, and obviously respected each other. She had the original concept for the dig, arranged for most of the funding, and got the permission to do the dig, by also providing that if the king was found, that professionals would examine the remains, providing DNA matches so the remains could be identified.
It is a wonderful story about how two people got the job done, and also about who Richard III was and what his world was like. I recommend this readable book.

A Personal History

Though this book contains a brief history of Richard III's ascent to the throne and then ignominious descent at Bosworth Field, it's more a story of co-author Philippa Langley's journey to find the remains of a fallen and maligned king. As a modern Ricardian, Langley's determination to find the remains of Richard III is breathtaking. It's a testament to what individuals can achieve with enough grit, sincerity (and the backing of an international organization dedicated to your cause.)
In her chapters, Langley talks about her personal journey as the excavation of a car park in Leicester uncovers the remains of Richard III. It's obvious that she believes nothing but good of the last Plantagenet King (going so far as to argue-- in text-- over whether Richard was responsible for the deaths of the Princes in the Tower.) Her reaction to discovering that Richard III suffered scoliosis is heartbreaking as it unfolds: it's a moment where hard scientific fact crashes into her personal dogma surrounding Richard III. Not everything in the history books was Tudor propaganda, after all.
Because it's a personal account, Langley also includes her feelings, intuitions, psychological profiles and, bizarrely, a graphologist's interpretation of who Richard III was as a man. It's during these sections that readers must remember that this isn't a history of Richard III. It's the story of a woman in the 21st century, reaching back to try to uncover what she believes is the truth about a king from the 15th century.
Jones' chapters provide an overview of Richard III's rise to the throne, though it often argues with itself in the attempt to rehabilitate a reputation that was no doubt darkened by Shakespeare-- but was also aided by Richard III himself. Many positive thoughts and feelings are attributed to Richard III (the section where Richard III's bastard children are handwaved away so the narrative that he was a pious and sexually moderate king compared to the excesses of the Tudors was particularly acrobatic.)
That said, it was a fascinating exploration of both the Ricardian point of view, and a fascinating glimpse behind the excavation that brought Richard III's remains to life. While I think Jones and Langley gild Richard III, I also believe that the Tudors and Shakespeare had a vested interest in slandering him. I suspect that the truth lies somewhere between.
