Counselling Older People with Alcohol Problems, by Lesley Wilson, Michael Fox

Alcohol misuse is becoming an increasingly significant issue for people aged 55 and over, and providing effective counselling services to this growing client group requires a unique and specialised approach. This practical guide explores the factors that differentiate older drinkers, and introduces an innovative person-centred model that will help counsellors and other healthcare professionals to give older people with alcohol problems the help and support they need.

Older people with alcohol problems often have complex personal histories, and are particularly vulnerable to long-term dependency, social isolation and self-medication. This book explores the influences, patterns and triggers that affect the development and progression of alcohol dependency in this age group, and provides a detailed description of a theoretical model and therapeutic process that has proved successful in practice. Informative case studies demonstrate the approach in action and guidance is also given for working with clients with dementia or mental health problems.

This book will prove an invaluable resource for counsellors and other healthcare professionals who encounter alcohol problems in their clinical practice, including clinical psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and community psychiatric nurses.

'Widely regarded as a 'hidden issue' this book is a welcome addition to the scant literature on counselling older people with alcohol problems. Written by two practitioners, Counselling Older People with Alcohol Problems offers a largely person-centred and practical approach to counselling with older people... the authors have written a practical book that is likely to be very helpful to counsellors and other practitioners who are new to the topic of alcohol and older people... very readable and practical guide to helping older people to change their drinking behaviour later in life.

This is the only book which addresses both the philosophy and practice of counselling older people with alcohol problems. It is based upon the authors' extensive experience of working with older people, and draws upon extensive case studies drawn from the experience of working in a specialist service for older people who have developed alcohol problems. The book is therefore based on a real understanding of the needs of this particular client group, how their alcohol problems have developed, and how they might be addressed. Indeed a recent report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2011) highlights growing numbers of older people seeking help for alcohol problems and the necessity to understand and address their specific needs. Against this backdrop, Counselling Older People with Alcohol Problems sets out to provide a practice-based discussion and guide for those providing counselling to older people in this situation. Video Modeling for Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Practical Guide for Parents and Professionals, by Brenna Noland, Sarah

Video modeling takes visual learning to the next level by using new technologies to create an effective teaching tool. This book explains how professionals and parents can use innovative video modeling techniques to support the development of young children with autism spectrum disorders in school, home or community settings.

Offering practical step-by-step guidance, the book shows how to film and edit personalized videos that highlight the exact skill that is being taught. Whether the focus is increasing attention, peer interaction, getting dressed or creative play, these videos are easy to incorporate into daily routines. They allow the child to learn new skills quickly and with less hands-on adult support leading to greater independence. Three video modeling strategies are presented – Basic Video Modeling, Video Self-Modeling and Point-of-view Video Modeling – along with all the information needed for readers to start using the techniques for themselves. The research behind the approach is also discussed and each chapter includes detailed case studies that demonstrate the techniques in action.

The Americans at D-Day: The American Experience at the Normandy Invasion, by John C. McManus

June 6, 1944 was a pivotal moment in the history of World War II in Europe. On that day the climactic and decisive phase of the war began. Those who survived the intense fighting on the Normandy beaches found their lives irreversibly changed. The day ushered in a great change for the United States as well becuse, on D-Day, America began its march to the forefront of the Western world.

By the end of the Battle of Normandy, almost one of every two soldiers involved was an American, and without American weapons, supplies, and leadership, the outcome of the invasion and ensuing battle could have been very different.

In the first of two volumes on the American contribution to the Allied victory at Normandy, John C. McManus (Deadly Brotherhood, Deadly Sky) examines, with great intensity and thoroughness, the American experience in the weeks leading up to D-Day and on the great day itself. From the build up in England to the night drops of airborne forces behind German lines and the landings on the beaches at dawn, from the famed figures of Eisenhower, Bradley, and Lightin' Joe Collins to the courageous, but little-known privates who fouhgt so bravely, and under terrifying conditions, this is the story of the American experience at D-Day. What were the battles really like for the Americans at Utah and Omaha? What drove them to fight despite all adversity? How and why did they triumph? Thanks to extensive archival research, and the use of hundreds of first hand accounts, McManus answers these questions and many more.

In The Americans at D-Day, a gripping narrative history reminiscent of Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day, McManus takes readers into the minds of American strategists, into the hearts of the infantry, into hell on earth.

Impressively researched, engrossing, lightning quick, and filled with human sorrow and elation, The Americans at D-Day honors those Americans who lost their lives on D-Day, as well as those who were fortunate enough to survive.

CHAPTER ONE

THE PLANNING AND PREPARATION

The Germans had four years to fortify their conquered northern Atlantic coast, but they had not, as of early 1944, put that time to good use. For three of those years the Western Front was, to them, a place to refit formations that had been shattered in Russia or a place to station inferior troops not trusted with front-line duty. The Nazi propaganda machine boasted about Germany’s "Atlantic Wall," but until the latter part of 1943 the wall was more fantasy than reality. Two things happened in late 1943 that lit a fire under the Germans. First, they began to realize that an Anglo-American invasion of France was a real possibility. Second, they appointed their most prominent commander, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the great hero of North Africa, to command in the west.
Rommel toured the beach defenses and came away appalled. In almost every area along the coast, the Germans did not have enough mines, barbed wire, obstacles, pillboxes, cupolas, concrete, guns, or troops to repel the kind of invasion Rommel expected in 1944. He strongly believed that Germany could only win the coming battle by repelling the invasion at the water’s edge. The first twenty-four hours would be decisive. If the Germans allowed the Allies a lodgment on the continent, their logistical, manpower, naval, and air superiority would inevitably overwhelm German forces. Only by turning the invasion coast into an impenetrable wall, ironically echoing the Nazi propaganda for which Rommel had little but contempt, could his forces achieve victory. The diminutive, dynamic German commander stood on a French beach one day in early 1944 and pensively told his young aide, Captain Hellmuth Lang, "The war will be won or lost on the beaches. We’ll have only one chance to stop the enemy, and that’s while he’s in the water…struggling to get ashore. Believe me, Lang, the first twenty-four hours of the invasion will be decisive…for the Allies, as well as Germany, it will be the longest day."1
Rommel immediately ordered a dramatic strengthening of the beach defenses. Thousands of slave and local laborers poured millions of tons of concrete and steel emplacements. German engineers sowed millions of mines and beach obstacles. The latter mainly consisted of devices aimed at thwarting landing craft: mine-tipped logs, sharp hedgehogs, concrete tank traps, barbed wire, Belgian gates (steel contraptions designed to snare landing craft), concrete cones, even live shells pointed out to sea. Behind these initial obstacles, his commanders supervised the construction of pillboxes, observation bunkers, communication trenches, guns, and machine-gun nests with interlocking fields of fire. They made brilliant use of terrain. They even took steps to defeat an airborne invasion, denuding local forests to emplace sharpened stakes known as Rommel’s asparagus. The asparagus were supposed to tear open gliders or impale descending paratroopers.2
The problem for Rommel was that he did not have total control of German forces in the west. He only controlled the armies defending Normandy and Calais. In effect, this meant he was subordinate to one of the German Army’s elder statesman—Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, a no-nonsense sixty-nine-year-old who was not afraid to speak bluntly, even to Hitler’s retinue. Rundstedt, commander in chief of all German forces in the west, completely disagreed with Rommel. Rundstedt thought that a successful Allied invasion was inevitable. Germany could not hope to be strong everywhere along the coast. Nor could German mechanized formations, which would be desperately needed to repel the Allied Army in France, hope to survive under the muzzles of Allied naval guns. Bitter experiences at Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio had proven the potency of naval gunfire. To neutralize this Allied strength, Rundstedt wanted to concentrate German defenses inland, along defensible terrain, gradually employing powerful reserves in counterattacks, quite similar to the approach the Japanese would later take in such battles as Peleliu and Okinawa.
Hitler’s mentality was more in line with Rommel’s. The Führer usually wanted to defend every inch of conquered ground. In this case, he did not rule in either commander’s favor; instead he divided power between them and maintained operational control over vital armored reserves for himself. In so doing, he ensured a dysfunctional command setup. Consequently, in the coming invasion, while Allied commanders worked together, German commanders often worked at cross-purposes.
* * *
One month after General Eisenhower received his momentous directive from the Combined Chiefs of Staff, his plan for Operation Overlord was mostly in place. Thousands of Allied officers and enlisted men had contributed, over the course of two years, to this final plan. Their first task had been to decide where to invade. The Pas de Calais area was, by far, the most desirable. Not only was it closest to England (about twenty miles at its most narrow point), but it also contained several excellent ports necessary for supply of the massive Allied armies. Its beaches were mostly flat and could support the armor and artillery necessary to support the infantry. Beyond the beaches, the terrain of Calais was mostly flat—ideal tank country. A successful lodgment in this area would afford the Allies the chance to head straight east into Belgium and Germany. In short, Calais was the logical, even obvious, place for any invasion of France.
Given their preference, the Allies would certainly have invaded there. Unfortunately, the Germans fully understood the desirability of Calais and stationed their strongest forces there. By the spring of 1944, the powerful 15th Army, containing many of the best armored and infantry forces Germany had in the west, patrolled the area. The Germans expected the Allies to invade at Calais, not just because it was the most desirable invasion site but also because they believed the Allies would need the area’s ports.
Indeed, the invasion planners had grappled with the same thorny supply issues. The disastrous Dieppe raid in August 1942 showed the strength, even at that early date, of German port defenses. Even now, two years later, with better trained and prepared assault forces, the Allies knew that such port assaults would be suicidal. To escape such a fate, they had designed, under great secrecy and with tremendous ingenuity, a plan to build artificial harbors of their own. These ports, code-named mulberries, made it possible for the Allies to invade beaches away from heavily defended ports.
In the end, the planners decided on Normandy. Normandy was well within range of Allied air cover, not prohibitively far away from sea bases in southern England, and contained beaches suitable for heavy armor and guns. Its defenses were not quite as strong as those of Calais, and it did feature a couple of attractive ports in Caen and Cherbourg. More than anything, an Allied invasion at Normandy would probably come as a surprise to the Germans, and surprise was of paramount importance. In order to neutralize the inevitable local superiority the Germans would possess in combat power, they must be kept guessing about the invasion’s time and location.
To that end, the Allies perpetrated one of the great deception plans of all time—Operation Fortitude. Fortitude was possible because of the success of British intelligence. The British had captured and "turned" every German agent in Britain. These agents provided the Germans with just enough good information to seem valuable, for example, the location of various Allied units or tidbits of gossip about commanders. The agents also fed false, but seemingly desirable, inform

A great American story, if not much new in this telling.
By Mannie Liscum
"The Americans at D-Day" by John McManus is a solid read within the plethora of books out there (especially published in the last few years) dedicated to D-Day. McManus writes with a clear easy-to-read style that helps to make "The Americans at D-Day" quite enjoyable. If you have never read a book on D-Day, this is a book that can provide a nice introduction. Of course be aware that McManus' book deals entirely with American operations relative to Overlord. If a reader wants a more encompassing look at how the Allies as a WHOLE breached "Fortress Europe" they should seek other works; such as Cornelius Ryan's "The Longest Day", Max Hastings' "Overlord: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy", or John Keegan's "Six Armies in Normandy", to name a few.
Nitty-gritty: One of the most positive aspects of "The Americans at D-Day" is its organization. McManus separates the book into two major parts: Planning and pre-invasion (Part1) and the invasion itself (Part 2). Within each of these major sections he establishes several sub-sections that describe particular aspects. For example, the role of US Army Air Forces in strategic and support bombing and fighter cover are described both from the angle of planning (the Transportation Plan discussion in Part 1 of the book) and outcomes (Air Cover in Part 2). Thus, one gets a feel for how things were envisioned as well as the realities of their implementation. About 1/3 of the book is dedicated to Part 1, while the remainder is given to Part 2. In Part 2 each "branch" (or sub-branch in case of US Army units) of the US military is given it's own due. This is a nice change from the typically simple chronological re-telling oft seen in other D-Day book. In doing this McManus is able to clearly show how each branch/sub-branch contributed significantly to the outcome of D-Day, in some cases less than expected (e.g., Transportation Plan), in others more (e.g., US Navy fire support of beach landings). Within each of these sub-sections the story is however generally chronological and thus the reader does not lose the temporal context. McManus should be applauded for this approach to his storytelling. I found "The Americans at D-Day" extremely easy to read and remember because of this organization.
Is there only praise for "The Americans at D-Day"? No. McManus has crafted a very readable and historically sound story, yet little is particularly new. A read of "The Longest Day" and/or "D-Day: The Climatic Battle of WWII" (S. Ambrose) and any reader of "The Americans at D-Day" will be convinced of this. McManus is gracious in giving credit to HISTORIANS who've written on D-Day with clarity in the past (notably Ambrose and Hastings). Yet, McManus "borrows" quite liberally (don't read plagiarize here, rather re-telling of stories told elsewhere with little new enlightenment) from works of Cornelius Ryan (see "The Longest Day") and Mark Bando (see "Vanguard of the Crusade: The 101st Airborne Division in WWII") without similar gratitude. Despite not being academic historians both Ryan and Bando have crafted serious historical pieces worthy of praise - clearly McManus has read works of these authors as he uses material from them and cites them in his "Selected Bibliography". Thankfully McManus has used these sources despite apparent academic snobbery to not credit them as highly as historians with a degree.
In the final analysis "The Americans at D-Day" is a sound contribution to the sub-genre and represents a fun and informative (if more so for a novice than seasoned D-Day reader) piece of historical literature. Four solid stars!

A Very Compelling Narrative of The Historical Events
By Michael Lewis
I found this book to be a very informative and accurate account of the events leading up to D-Day as well as the actions of the American forces involved. This book dealt only with American landings at Omaha and Utah beaches as well as the airborne drops behind the Nazi lines by glider troops, airborne troops and the pathfinders. However the author did not completely ignore the actions of British and Canadian troops who participated either. Their objectives and contributions to the overall success of the invasion is mentioned throughout the book as well. British and Canadian troops were able to take command of key bridges and causeways that day in effect cutting off a German mechanized counterattack.

Complete with maps showing troop movements and objectives, the author painted a picture of the many trials and tribulations of that historic day. Each chapter is a story within itself that comes together page by page. At some points I found myself flipping back and forth just to try and keep up with the different names, platoons, regiments, etc. so that I could tie them altogether as McManus did. I was also impressed with the way the author pointed out the American mistakes that were made as well as the German mistakes that American forces took advantage of. Very often superior German forces were fought off or held back by outnumbered American platoons using subterfuge or sheer will to make their numbers appear larger than they in fact were. McManus also points out that American casualties on that day could have been lessened with a more precise Aerial attack and bombardment which at the time was not a part of military planning (close air support combined with ground troops attacking.) The Navy really stepped up that day with their bombardments to make the beach landings a success. The entire day was a combined effort of sheer will, courage and commitment to the cause. The use of imagery and paying close attention to detail makes this book a must read for anyone interested or learning about the subject of World War II history.

The Future of Catholicism, by Michael Coren

From the author of the bestselling Why Catholics Are Right, a perfectly timed book on the new Vatican -- where it is, where it needs to go, and why it is more relevant than ever.

When Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, became Pope Francis in March 2013, there were almost 6,000 journalists in Rome to cover the Papal election. Some of them reported on the conclave with expertise and empathy, but others -- either out of ignorance or an agenda -- insisted on asking the same questions again and again: Is the Church going to change? Will the new Pope be flexible? Is Catholicism going to adapt to the times and alter its teaching on same-sex marriage, abortion, contraception, female ordination, celibate clergy, and divorce? Interestingly, these questions center on moral and sexual issues rather than directly theological topics, but they are all based on the premise that the Church is wrong, outdated, in need of fundamental transformation.

Does the Church need to change, and if so, where? Where it cannot change, why is this so? In his signature frank style, Coren will explain and outline why the Church believes as it does on many of the most pressing moral issues, giving reasons for teaching and belief, and applying these to contemporary challenges. And for those areas where the Church must change and establish reform -- the transparency of leadership and finance; the competence of the curia and Vatican civil service; the approach the Church takes towards media, the way it deals with the detritus of the abuse crisis; and its approach to the developing world band towards others religions, particularly Islam -- Coren will offer insight into the faith's next steps.

The Church is at a crossroads, but perhaps more significantly and accurately, the Western world is at a crossroads, and how the Church reacts to and deals with this phenomenon will decide and define so very much of the future -- of our future.

Very Interesting Discussion of the Future Direction of the Catholic Church Under Pope Francis
By Mark Anderson
Michael Coren's books are always worth reading and this one is particularly interesting.

In this 2013 release, Coren presents some very convincing arguments in favour of the directions he believes Pope Francis should, and in Coren's view will, be leading Catholics and the Catholic Church. The arguments he presents aren't new; they can be found in other recent books such as George Weigel's, Evangelical Catholicism. But Coren writes well and presents his positions in short effective chapters, so this one is well worth reading.

I won't go into great detail about the arguments Michael Coren makes in this book, but here are the chapter headings so you can get a rough idea of the topics he's covering:

1. Marriage
2. Abortion and Birth Control
3. Euthanasia
4. Church And State
5. Female Ordination and Married Priests
6. Papacy
7. Ecumenism and New Evangelization
8. Pope Francis

The Future of Catholicism
By Frank J, Wodzinski
Mr. Coren's book was so fascinating that I could not put it down! There is a very rosy future for the Catholic Church. Problems in the Church are nothing new. The Church has overcome other problems in its history. It overcame them all, and will overcome the present ones. Mr. Coren's book indicates that it will do so, and will emerge stroner and more beautiful than ever! .

Keeping Truth, the Church will shine as the Body of Christ
By M. Lozano
Coren's book "The Future of Catholicism" touches on main themes facing the Church in the next century, and how the Church should overcome them. Whether it is dialogue with the Islamic faith, the papacy, abortion, etc., all of these matters require the Church to affirm the teachings of Christ.

I enjoyed Coren's statement regarding abortion as I have often said the same but in a different way. "At conception a child has a unique DNA and genomic character and is already unlike anyone who has been conceived or born before or anyone who will be conceived or born afterwards." What a statement to outline the beauty of life! Coren goes further in a later chapter to point out the hypocrisy of secular culture when it comes to the disabled. We pass laws and fine tune our political correctness when it comes to those afflicted with a disability, but raise no objections when abortion is now being used as the primary vehicle to abort babies known to have disabilities or Down syndrome. How we seem to care for the disabled but are the first to allow laws to prevent their existence.

Under the chapter "Church and State" Coren reinforces a point Pope Benedict XVI eloquently made that faith is not a private matter. "Truth is not geographical. If it's true in a church or a home, it's true in a parliament or a courtroom. If it's true, it's true." There is no such thing as leaving your faith to your personal life. Not sharing truth is harmful to our society, and contradicts our duty from Christ to spread truth.

From Publishers Weekly
Early in this melodramatic financial thriller from bestseller Kaplan (Evil, Inc.), Emma Conway, the CEO of a large pharmaceutical firm, Percival & Baxter, quarrels with her 16-year-old son, Peter, at home in Wynnewood, Pa. Peter cares only for money, just like his father and Emma's ex, Josh Katz, who lives in a grand house in Greenwich, Conn., and is about to attempt a hostile takeover of P&B. Josh, a self-made businessman who suffered heavy losses in the 2008 crash, has borrowed $500 million from Russian billionaire Viktor Volkov, who's hot on the trail of a female version of Viagra. Meanwhile, Viktor's 21-year-old daughter, Tanya, wants Peter to be the sperm donor for the baby she craves. Hurtling along from one clichéd crisis to another, this shallow thriller peppers the proceedings with big-name brands, tired dirty tricks, overheated adolescent sex, and mawkish resolutions to tidy up the various messes Kaplan inflicts on poor Emma and the rest of his stock characters. Agent: Al Zuckerman, Writers House. (Oct.)

A tasty pill, but difficult to swallow
By TChris
The title of Poison Pill has a double meaning. It's the name given to a strategy to prevent hostile takeovers of corporations -- in this case, a pharmaceutical company -- but its literal meaning is also applicable. Someone is poisoning the company's leading product (a headache remedy) in order to destroy the company's value.

In chapter two, Peter Katz tells his mother all about the safe room in the basement of his father's Greenwich house. The savvy reader knows that, like Chekov's gun hanging on the wall, the safe room will reappear near the end of the novel. Peter's mother, Emma, is an executive at Percival & Baxter, a pharmaceutical company. His father, Emma's ex-husband Josh, is planning a hostile takeover of Percival & Baxter for his client, a mysterious Russian named Viktor Volkov whose reason for wanting control of the company is far-fetched but amusing. Viktor, hoping to create a dynasty in London, wants his daughter Tanya to breed with the little brother of the woman Viktor plans to marry, thus merging his wealth with the brother's title and producing the heirs he can no longer manufacture. Tanya wouldn't mind breeding but she has her own ideas about an appropriate sperm donor.

In many ways, young Peter is the most interesting character in the novel. He's caught in the middle of a war between his hotshot parents. His father wants to use him to influence his mother while his mother is poisoning his thoughts about his father. Peter and Tanya both belong to the Kroesus Club, an exclusive group of teens and young adults, the children of wealthy parents from around the world, a group that Peter generally despises. Peter is peripheral to the central story for much of the novel but he stars in an interesting subplot of his own. He is a believable character, although perhaps a bit more grounded and likeable than most teenage offspring of wealthy parents.

The other characters, like the plot, are well-conceived, although you wouldn't want to hang out with most of them. Family dramas pepper the novel and they turn out to be related to each other in unexpected ways. Scenes of domestic discord between well-paid Emma and her struggling artist second husband are dull and some of the scenes involving Emma and Josh approach melodrama, but there aren't many of those.

An interesting theme in Poison Pill is the ongoing debate about hostile takeovers. Josh sees himself as creating shareholder value while Emma sees him as destroying good companies. Greed is a related theme and while the lesson is obvious (greed isn't good), it is nonetheless satisfying. Those themes animate the thriller in a fairly conventional way. The story races to an unconvincing ending (Emma displays intuition that borders on ESP) that wraps up the story a little too neatly, but the novel as a whole is better than its disappointing climax.

Not at all interesting/intriguing!
By ADITI SAHA
“An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.”
----Mahatma Gandhi

That's incredibly correct. What will be left of us, if we all start to do that "eye-for-an-eye" thing- the world will be certainly doomed. But in this 21st century, we've clearly and proudly chose the road to doomed future rather than a better future- courtesy: thanks to revenge.

Well, sorry for drifting away from the topic, I mean that's what I was literally feeling after reading, Glenn Kaplan, a New York Times bestselling author's latest book, Poison Pill . Although my initial reaction after reading the book was WTF!?!! , still I felt it was something worth reading to have a reading-Robin-Cook-kind-novel-experience only till the mid-way of the book. And the ending was drastic, so w\out-of-the-world, and really crappy! End of story!

Synopsis:
Caught in a war that pits greed and ambition against conscience and love, Emma Conway faces the fight of her life—to save her family, her company, and everything she treasures.
Emma is finally living the dream—a happy second marriage and a great career. She has built Percival & Baxter’s painkiller, Acordinol, into a huge success. But her dream becomes a nightmare when a Wall Street raider threatens a hostile takeover. Worse, the raider is no ordinary cutthroat but her ex-husband Josh Katz, father of their teenage son.
P&B’s Poison Pill defense implodes when a mysteriously tainted batch of Acordinol starts killing people, including P&B’s CEO. Emma is put in charge as P&B’s stock plummets.
Her ex’s game traps her in a web of secrets locked within secrets. A shadowy Russian oligarch behind Josh is lusting after the holy grail of drugs, the first Viagra for women. And a clandestine romance between Emma’s son and the oligarch’s estranged daughter puts them in the crosshairs of their parents’ mortal combat.
The author Glenn Kaplan looks inside the heart of today's business world to create page-turning suspense in a powerful tale of a woman who leans into success—and discovers deadly peril.

Doesn't the blurb sound incredibly thrilling and intriguing! Well at least that's what I thought about the blurb. And once I started reading the book, I simply couldn't stop myself- only till the mid-way of the story!

From the well-developed characters to the smooth flow of narration to articulate prose- everything sounded and looked perfect in order to be the next best thriller. But alas, when the company's stocks became lower, the plot took a total 360 degree turn and fell in to the Devil's Sinkhole, logically speaking, the story went out of its pace- became slow, the characters lost its charm, except Emma Conway and wait the worst is yet to come, the most deadly Russian villain in the world falls for his daughter's sweet little trap! How cliché!

Anyways, I liked Emma a lot- determined, caring mother- for both her teenage son and her company P&B. Anyways, the beginning of the story was super-awesome- completely Robin-Cook-novel-type. I was scared too, sweating out in anticipation, and that stupid ending, especially almost mid-way in the book, I felt like, I cannot keep reading this. But for the sake of the author's hard work, I somehow managed to read it till its end. I already said, the book's writing won't disappoint you-simple and very narrative, and I can almost see the events unfolding right in front of my eyes. Well I wish there was something missing from the plot- the element which will give you an adrenaline rushing feeling.

The characterization was very skillfully done. All the primary key characters were completely justifiable with the plot- a very ambitious corporate woman to the clueless, virgin teenager to a rich aristocrat! They could have charmed their readers only if they would have got opportunity to show off their hidden talents and charm in the story! But overall the revenge angle shown in the story was bit dull and not at all interesting!

Verdict: It was not at all a page-turning suspense, but in the beginning it managed to keep me in its intriguing loop!

From Booklist
What would you do if you couldn’t die? When you get killed, you awake a few minutes later, good as new. Well, if you’re Trent, the narrator of this nifty mix of horror and urban fantasy, you’d go to work for Underwood, a Brooklyn gangster whose connections on both sides of the law might just lead you to the answers you desperately need—not just the reason why you can’t die but why your memory only goes back a year and, of course, your real identity. Trent’s latest job involves taking an antique box away from some homeless folks and delivering it into Underwood’s hands—as usual, no questions asked. But unfortunately, there are lots of questions, such as what’s in the box, who are the winged creatures guarding it, and whether Trent will choose the right side in what appears to be an ancient war between the forces of good and evil. Filled with characters that should appeal to urban fantasy readers—a zombified werewolf is a standout—and told with real sense style and wit, the book should have no trouble amassing an enthusiastic readership. --David Pitt

Fun Fast Read
By Maxine McLister
Trent (no last name or, at least, none he remembers) is an amnesiac who can't remember anything before a year ago. Except for that one weird ability to return from the dead, he seems perfectly normal in every way. When, on assignment for his crime lord boss, he discovers that magic exists, worse, that he seems able to do magic albeit without being able to control it, he refuses to believe it. But then the magic users he meets in this latest assignment begin to suggest that there's something different about him, something not human and very dangerous. Trent isn't sure of many things in his life but he is sure of one thing; he's died a lot in the employ of evil, maybe just this once he'll die for the good guys.

The title of this novel reminded me of those old noir movies from the '40s and '50s, stuff like I Died a Thousand Times and there is a definite noir feel to this story. There's the psychotic crime boss, the tough-as-nails love interest with a heart of gold, the wise-cracking sidekick, and of course, the morally conflicted hero, all characters who live on the edge of society. Of course, the love interest is a wizard, the sidekick is a werewolf, and the morally conflicted hero just won't stay dead; the crime boss, well, he may or may not be just what he seems.

Dying is my Business is one fun fast roller-coaster ride of a read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Since the question of who or what Trent is is never answered, I suspect a sequel is in the works. and i am definitely looking forward to it. For fans of The Dresden Files or Simon Green's The Nightside tales, this one's for you

Fun and fast-paced
By Daniel G Keohane
This book was really fun. I love finding a novel where I end up eager to sit back down and continue reading. The action is pretty much non-stop in this book, with equal mixes of suspense, violence and humor. The main character, Trent, is an amnesiac working for a small-time and uber-violent criminal, under the promise of finding out who he is, and why he seems unable to die. In fact, his death is always transferred to whoever is closest to him in that moment (an aspect of his ability which also fills him with guilt). It’s a clever premise, and adds to the plot as Trent discovers a hidden world once relegated to the fantasy shelves, with elves, vampires, even dragons living in secret among the residents of New York City. Kaufmann’s writing is crisp and fast-moving, with interesting and likeable (as well as deliciously non-likeable) characters. He’s got a sharp wit, and when he uses it only adds to the enjoyment of this book. DYING IS MY BUSINESS positions itself to be the first in a series, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next installment.

Action packed with compelling characters
By Sherry R. Melancon
Do your memories make you who you are, or is it your actions right now? What if you had no memory of who you were or anything you had ever done and you had to make decisions based only on what was in front of you...decisions that could affect the whole world? Who would you trust, and why on Earth should anyone trust you? This is what Trent is faced with every day...that and the fact that he is a danger to everyone around him.
Kaufmann lets you ride along with Trent as he crashes onto the scene of a high-stakes struggle between forces he can't understand, and in which he has no choice but to play a pivotal role. Along the way he makes friends and enemies, and he is never quite sure who is who.

I enjoyed the book so much that I had to read it in one sitting. I hope we haven't seen the last of Trent.
