What would you do if you couldn’t die? When you get killed, you awake a few minutes later, good as new. Well, if you’re Trent, the narrator of this nifty mix of horror and urban fantasy, you’d go to work for Underwood, a Brooklyn gangster whose connections on both sides of the law might just lead you to the answers you desperately need—not just the reason why you can’t die but why your memory only goes back a year and, of course, your real identity. Trent’s latest job involves taking an antique box away from some homeless folks and delivering it into Underwood’s hands—as usual, no questions asked. But unfortunately, there are lots of questions, such as what’s in the box, who are the winged creatures guarding it, and whether Trent will choose the right side in what appears to be an ancient war between the forces of good and evil. Filled with characters that should appeal to urban fantasy readers—a zombified werewolf is a standout—and told with real sense style and wit, the book should have no trouble amassing an enthusiastic readership. --David Pitt

Fun Fast Read
By Maxine McLister
Trent (no last name or, at least, none he remembers) is an amnesiac who can't remember anything before a year ago. Except for that one weird ability to return from the dead, he seems perfectly normal in every way. When, on assignment for his crime lord boss, he discovers that magic exists, worse, that he seems able to do magic albeit without being able to control it, he refuses to believe it. But then the magic users he meets in this latest assignment begin to suggest that there's something different about him, something not human and very dangerous. Trent isn't sure of many things in his life but he is sure of one thing; he's died a lot in the employ of evil, maybe just this once he'll die for the good guys.

The title of this novel reminded me of those old noir movies from the '40s and '50s, stuff like I Died a Thousand Times and there is a definite noir feel to this story. There's the psychotic crime boss, the tough-as-nails love interest with a heart of gold, the wise-cracking sidekick, and of course, the morally conflicted hero, all characters who live on the edge of society. Of course, the love interest is a wizard, the sidekick is a werewolf, and the morally conflicted hero just won't stay dead; the crime boss, well, he may or may not be just what he seems.

Dying is my Business is one fun fast roller-coaster ride of a read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Since the question of who or what Trent is is never answered, I suspect a sequel is in the works. and i am definitely looking forward to it. For fans of The Dresden Files or Simon Green's The Nightside tales, this one's for you

Fun and fast-paced
By Daniel G Keohane
This book was really fun. I love finding a novel where I end up eager to sit back down and continue reading. The action is pretty much non-stop in this book, with equal mixes of suspense, violence and humor. The main character, Trent, is an amnesiac working for a small-time and uber-violent criminal, under the promise of finding out who he is, and why he seems unable to die. In fact, his death is always transferred to whoever is closest to him in that moment (an aspect of his ability which also fills him with guilt). It’s a clever premise, and adds to the plot as Trent discovers a hidden world once relegated to the fantasy shelves, with elves, vampires, even dragons living in secret among the residents of New York City. Kaufmann’s writing is crisp and fast-moving, with interesting and likeable (as well as deliciously non-likeable) characters. He’s got a sharp wit, and when he uses it only adds to the enjoyment of this book. DYING IS MY BUSINESS positions itself to be the first in a series, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next installment.

Action packed with compelling characters
By Sherry R. Melancon
Do your memories make you who you are, or is it your actions right now? What if you had no memory of who you were or anything you had ever done and you had to make decisions based only on what was in front of you...decisions that could affect the whole world? Who would you trust, and why on Earth should anyone trust you? This is what Trent is faced with every day...that and the fact that he is a danger to everyone around him.
Kaufmann lets you ride along with Trent as he crashes onto the scene of a high-stakes struggle between forces he can't understand, and in which he has no choice but to play a pivotal role. Along the way he makes friends and enemies, and he is never quite sure who is who.

I enjoyed the book so much that I had to read it in one sitting. I hope we haven't seen the last of Trent.
