An excellent review of both the promise and the pitfalls of spiritual seeking

All too often you find either glowing reports of spirituality while ignoring the pitfalls or you read attacks that focus only on the pitfalls and none of the positive consequences that have come from it. He doesn't come at it as an armchair mystic or spiritual seeker. He would be called in sociological terms as a participant observer. No matter what worldview, religious orientation or particular path one may be on, I would say that there is much that he has to say to all of us which is worthy of self-reflection. He does a good job of being balanced in his approach. Even though he addresses the pitfalls, he is careful to not condemn it necessarily because he recognizes that that is a part of our spiritual journey.

Paul Brunton has written a very helpful book for serious mystics of the pitfalls and perils of the mystic path when it is not balanced in it's approach. Brunton has had a lifetime of serious study and personal experience of the many paths of mysticism to give one a healthy perspective from which to evaluate the true value of mysticism in today's world.
