Review
Praise for the second edition 'The book is immensely practical and there are sections on how to deploy the teaching assistant, what to do about homework, and how to defuse a difficult situation when, despite your best efforts, meltdown occurs. Equally important, the authors manage to give an insight into the mind of the child with Asperger Syndrome which helps teachers to understand how the child is likely to view the world and how they can make their classroom a non-threatening, secure place in which the child can relax and flourish... This book really does provide "all teachers need to know" about teaching a child with Asperger Syndrome' -- NAPLIC Matters The book provides a quick overview of AS and outlines a child's areas of difficulty, while also stressing some positive characteristics... This book is an easy-to-read quick guide for teachers on AS. It is a great place to start and can certainly help teachers to get moving in the right direction. This book can also help parents learn what a teacher can do to work effectively with their child. If a teacher is struggling with understanding your child, perhaps this book would be a nice gift! -- S-O-S Research The authors' experience has been distilled into an extremely useful book that would fit readily into a bag and one would expect it to become a well-used resource for any staffroom. -- Mary Mountstephen, SEN Magazine. Praise for the first edition 'This book is very practical in nature. It would be relevant to all teachers and is an essential tool for those in training. Parents would be advised to obtain a copy to help them support their child through the procedures associated with the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice. They might even like to buy a copy for the staffroom! This is a very valuable and easily accessible addition to your 'survival in the classroom' toolkit.' -- British Journal of Special Education Wonderful! This book is clear, well-written and has some good suggestions. I found all of this book useful in various ways. Matt Winter seems to have an excellent understanding of children with AS and the challenges life can throw at them; he also presents sensible solutions to some of those challenges. If any child with AS goes into the school system I'd recommend this book for the teacher! -- Education Otherwise The book is very readable and manages to fit a lot of information into a small space. The author's experience as a primary school teacher means that the suggestions made are ones that can be easily and practically applied in a classroom, with or without additional support. -- Jennie Webster Peach Case Manager The book presents a balanced look at the positive and negative traits of the syndrome and thoroughly describes the four distinct components of AS: social interaction, communication, imagination, and sensory sensitivity. Concrete strategies are presented to assist students with AS to participate fully in school without being remanded to classes for learning disabled students. -- Fore Word Reviews

Put it in your IEP--Teachers and Parents should read this book every year
By Cheryl Lynn / Moonwaxing
This book was recommended to me by another parent who said that she was going to require every teacher who has her 4th grader to read this book. On that recommendation, I bought 3 copies--one for my 3rd grader's regular classroom teacher, one for his special ed teacher, and one for me. Although there are some things that I would emphasize more than the author, I thought the book was very well written and nicely concise. It was an easy read for the teachers as well as for me. The section on homework was especially enlightening.
I would emphasize that teachers should not expect intrinsic motivation. Further, negative consequences don't work because the child will focus on the negative consequence rather than doing the work in order to avoid the negative consequence--and then no one's happy.
What I would add is that parents are either very aware of their child's strengths and weaknesses as well as inconsistency in the child's behavior or are as bewildered by their child's Aspergers behavior as you, the teacher, is. I would love to see more about how teachers and parents can work together.

By Reacher Creature
This is a book all teachers should read, This book covers what teacher and parents need to do to make sure their child with Aspergers Syndrome is a success in school. The book points out how teachers and parents need to work together for the good of their child. Some of the tips deal with how the classroom should be set up, how to integrate the child within the social aspects of the classroom, and where is it best to place the child in the classroom, so there will be limited distractions. This really is a must read for all teachers and parents. I know as I teacher, I learned a lot. If you read this book, you can't go wrong, and you won't be sorry. I know I wasn't.

This is exactly what I was looking for: a short book with all the relevant information, to give to my daughter's teachers and IEP team. I will definitely make sure this book moves with her from grade to grade. A very helpful resource.
