The Future of Catholicism, by Michael Coren

From the author of the bestselling Why Catholics Are Right, a perfectly timed book on the new Vatican -- where it is, where it needs to go, and why it is more relevant than ever.

When Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, became Pope Francis in March 2013, there were almost 6,000 journalists in Rome to cover the Papal election. Some of them reported on the conclave with expertise and empathy, but others -- either out of ignorance or an agenda -- insisted on asking the same questions again and again: Is the Church going to change? Will the new Pope be flexible? Is Catholicism going to adapt to the times and alter its teaching on same-sex marriage, abortion, contraception, female ordination, celibate clergy, and divorce? Interestingly, these questions center on moral and sexual issues rather than directly theological topics, but they are all based on the premise that the Church is wrong, outdated, in need of fundamental transformation.

Does the Church need to change, and if so, where? Where it cannot change, why is this so? In his signature frank style, Coren will explain and outline why the Church believes as it does on many of the most pressing moral issues, giving reasons for teaching and belief, and applying these to contemporary challenges. And for those areas where the Church must change and establish reform -- the transparency of leadership and finance; the competence of the curia and Vatican civil service; the approach the Church takes towards media, the way it deals with the detritus of the abuse crisis; and its approach to the developing world band towards others religions, particularly Islam -- Coren will offer insight into the faith's next steps.

The Church is at a crossroads, but perhaps more significantly and accurately, the Western world is at a crossroads, and how the Church reacts to and deals with this phenomenon will decide and define so very much of the future -- of our future.

Very Interesting Discussion of the Future Direction of the Catholic Church Under Pope Francis
By Mark Anderson
Michael Coren's books are always worth reading and this one is particularly interesting.

In this 2013 release, Coren presents some very convincing arguments in favour of the directions he believes Pope Francis should, and in Coren's view will, be leading Catholics and the Catholic Church. The arguments he presents aren't new; they can be found in other recent books such as George Weigel's, Evangelical Catholicism. But Coren writes well and presents his positions in short effective chapters, so this one is well worth reading.

I won't go into great detail about the arguments Michael Coren makes in this book, but here are the chapter headings so you can get a rough idea of the topics he's covering:

1. Marriage
2. Abortion and Birth Control
3. Euthanasia
4. Church And State
5. Female Ordination and Married Priests
6. Papacy
7. Ecumenism and New Evangelization
8. Pope Francis

The Future of Catholicism
By Frank J, Wodzinski
Mr. Coren's book was so fascinating that I could not put it down! There is a very rosy future for the Catholic Church. Problems in the Church are nothing new. The Church has overcome other problems in its history. It overcame them all, and will overcome the present ones. Mr. Coren's book indicates that it will do so, and will emerge stroner and more beautiful than ever! .

Keeping Truth, the Church will shine as the Body of Christ
By M. Lozano
Coren's book "The Future of Catholicism" touches on main themes facing the Church in the next century, and how the Church should overcome them. Whether it is dialogue with the Islamic faith, the papacy, abortion, etc., all of these matters require the Church to affirm the teachings of Christ.

I enjoyed Coren's statement regarding abortion as I have often said the same but in a different way. "At conception a child has a unique DNA and genomic character and is already unlike anyone who has been conceived or born before or anyone who will be conceived or born afterwards." What a statement to outline the beauty of life! Coren goes further in a later chapter to point out the hypocrisy of secular culture when it comes to the disabled. We pass laws and fine tune our political correctness when it comes to those afflicted with a disability, but raise no objections when abortion is now being used as the primary vehicle to abort babies known to have disabilities or Down syndrome. How we seem to care for the disabled but are the first to allow laws to prevent their existence.

Under the chapter "Church and State" Coren reinforces a point Pope Benedict XVI eloquently made that faith is not a private matter. "Truth is not geographical. If it's true in a church or a home, it's true in a parliament or a courtroom. If it's true, it's true." There is no such thing as leaving your faith to your personal life. Not sharing truth is harmful to our society, and contradicts our duty from Christ to spread truth.
