In 1849, 11-year-old John Muir immigrated from Scotland to America. Here, he rose from farmer and sawmill worker to become a noted authority on the botany, glaciers, and forestry of the nation's wilderness. Best known for his long association with the Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, Muir also explored, mostly afoot, the southern States, Alaska, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert. His studies of nature took him around the world and generated volumes of poetic, evocative writings.
As America expanded relentlessly westward, Muir witnessed the plunder and exploitation of the land and became a driving force in efforts to protect the natural world. A modest and private man, married and father of two doting daughters, his conservationist views forced him into battle with powerful political and industrial interests. Some battles he won, influencing four US Presidents to sponsor legislation that protected forests and established or expanded America's national parks.
Muir lost his last, and perhaps most personal battle. He fought until near the end of his life to prevent the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park from becoming a reservoir for the city of San Francisco. Some of his conservationsist friends believed the conflict so sapped his physical, emotional, and spiritual strength that it contributed to his death.
Remembered as the founder of the Sierra Club, father of America's conservation movement, and architect of a still growing wilderness ethic, Muir set an example many still follow, fighting today's threats to the environment.

"One day's exposure to mountains is better than a cartload of books," believed naturalist John Muir. Best known to the American public for his conservation efforts, particularly in Yosemite, Muir was something of a latecomer to the world of letters. After emigrating from Scotland to America with his family at age 11, and moving to Canada to avoid the 1864 draft, Muir lost the sight in his right eye in an industrial accident. He then decided to "tramp" to the Gulf of Mexico. Miller ably covers the diverse aspects of Muir's life: his love of wandering juxtaposed with a decade spent tending his in-law's ranch; the reluctant scribe who penned six books and numerous articles during his lifetime in order to save his beloved Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite. It's hard to see how this volume adds significantly to the already extensive scholarship on Muir, but its bite-size chapters do make this a pleasingly accessible and easily digested portrait of the father of the conservation movement. Superbly written biography of a true American Hero.

Delightful

This little book is a joy to read. John Muir is one of my favorite people of all times and I loved the way his wonderful personality and genius were revealed. This is an interesting, delightful and easy read with many famous people and their John Muir encounters described.

Repetitive and poorly organized

I'm not quite sure what the author was thinking in organizing the chapters of this book but I imagine he was trying to be thematic by chapter. Unfortunately, this approach leads to many events being mentioned over and over again, to the point that readers would be justified in wondering whether Miller is speaking down to them. I know this book may be aiming at a young audience, but I can not imagine high school students not noticing how many times he repeats the same event. Within each chapter, the writer tends to a fairly dry chronological rendering of events, without much depth or insight into the society of the time. Perhaps in that way though, Miller mirrors Muir, who outside of his environmentalist message seems to have lived in a vacuum, little noticing outside events. I say perhaps because perhaps I could learn more by reading Donald Worster's or Gretel Ehrlich's treatment of the same subject. Recommended only if one is looking for a quick summary of the facts of Muir's life.
