Elysian Fields by Suzanne Johnson is the fun, fast-paced third book in the Sentinels of New Orleans, a series of urban fantasy novels filled with wizards, mermen, and pirates. These novels are perfect for readers of paranormal fiction and "fans of Charlaine Harris and Cat Adams" (Booklist) and RT Bookreviews agrees that "for readers missing Sookie Stackhouse, this series may be right up your alley."
The mer feud has been settled, but life in South Louisiana still has more twists and turns than the muddy Mississippi.
New Orleanians are under attack from a copycat killer mimicking the crimes of a 1918 serial murderer known as the Axeman of New Orleans. Thanks to a tip from the undead pirate Jean Lafitte, DJ Jaco knows the attacks aren't random—an unknown necromancer has resurrected the original Axeman of New Orleans, and his ultimate target is a certain blonde wizard. Namely, DJ.
Combating an undead serial killer as troubles pile up around her isn't easy. Jake Warin's loup-garou nature is spiraling downward, enigmatic neighbor Quince Randolph is acting weirder than ever, the Elders are insisting on lessons in elven magic from the world's most annoying wizard, and former partner Alex Warin just turned up on DJ's to-do list. Not to mention big maneuvers are afoot in the halls of preternatural power.
Suddenly, moving to the Beyond as Jean Lafitte's pirate wench could be DJ's best option.

From Booklist
Johnson returns to New Orleans (or rather, the underworld known as Old Orleans) in this third installment of her Sentinels of New Orleans series (after Royal Street and River Road, both 2012). Many of the same pirates, elves, wizards, and mermen appear, this time stalked by an undead serial killer known as Axeman. DJ, a Sentinel wizard charged with keeping the two worlds separate, finds herself Axeman’s main target. She already has enough to deal with—she’s terribly worried about her friend Jake, who can’t control his werewolf tendencies; undead pirate Jean Lafitte is still trying to seduce her; and her shape-shifter partner, Alex, is as gruff as ever. Johnson has a real flair for world building and keeps the plot in this adventure/romance/fantasy humming along smoothly. Readers will want to start at the beginning of the series to get the full story. --Rebecca Vnuk
Review
“Solid plotting and a well-described, consistent setting make this a strong and intriguing addition to the genre.” ―Publishers Weekly on River Road
“[Johnson] does a brilliant job of bringing her fantasy version of New Orleans to life. An enchanting examination of magic and the people who wield it, River Road is a book to be savored. “A vivid debut. . . . Sympathetic, entertaining DJ is the perfect narrator.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review, on River Road

Fabulous fantasy
By Shelleyrae
I enjoyed the debut of Suzanne Johnson's Sentinels of New Orleans series, Royal Street and made sure I picked up the second book, River Road shortly after it was released. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to read it before the review for this third installment, Elysian Fields was due, luckily though the gap didn't seem to matter much.
Elysian Fields opens with DJ and Jake attending a bloody crime scene, the most recent of a string of homicides linked by an axe left at the scene. The police think the murders are being committed by a copycat but DJ suspects they are dealing with a Historical Undead, an axe wielding serial killer who has crossed over from the Beyond. Tracking down the Axeman becomes easier when he turns his murderous attention to DJ but capturing the Undead figure becomes far more complicated when she learns he is being controlled by a Necromancer. Trying to figure out who wants her dead, while under the threat of turning furry at the next full moon and being forced to take lessons in elven magic from the wizard she holds responsible for Tish's death has DJ reeling.
It's a busy plot combining preternatural political intrigue, murder, betrayal, strained friendships and romance, but Johnson handles it well.
I really like DJ, despite her propensity for chaos. Mostly she isn't at fault, as a New Orleans Sentinel, and a Green Wizard with Elven ancestry, trouble seems determined to find her. DJ is smart, resourceful and willing to throw herself into the breach to protect those she cares about.
The setting of this series, in post-hurricane New Orleans and Johnson's unique mythology is a huge part of the attraction for me. I like the way in which the author mixes wizards, vamps, elves, shifters and the Historical Undead like Louis Armstrong and of course the notorious pirate, Jean Lafitte.
Fast paced and action packed Elysian Fields is an entertaining urban fantasy adventure with great combination of interesting story and appealing characters. I am looking forward to the next one (and promise to get River Road read before then!)

Best of the series so far.

The best in the series so far. Perfect amount of action, mystery, and romance for a true urban fantasy.
The Good
This series is getting better and better. I was skeptical with the first book, Royal Street, which I liked but I wasn't head over heels. Then River Road was better but still not quite as exciting as I expected. But Elysian Fields blew me away in a lot of ways. It had all the right elements to keep my interest and make me crave more.
I loved how many elements were going on at once in this book. And Johnson did a good job of tying them together in the end. But, OMG, did I get frustrated. DJ gets hit after hit in this one. Not an ounce of give for our girl. Jake is messing with her life, in a BIG way. Alex is starting to get real with DJ about his feelings. Jean Lafitte is...well actually he's the sane one in this story. LOL. Weird, right? He is actually very generous, helpful, and supportive. Pigs have officially flown.
But it's DJ's creepy neighbor Rand who really makes himself known in this book. I expected Rand to reveal himself to be something significant in the story. But wow, I never would have guessed how much his connection to DJ's crazy life went...and how much more it goes in just this book. We will be seeing him a lot more, and I don't know how I feel about that. He's a bona fide stalker with issues, and that's being kind. :) But seriously, it is funny to watch him mess with DJ.
DJ is getting stronger with each book. She still makes some bad decisions, but if she can be okay with that, then so can I. She's not hiding from her messed up life anymore. She is actually starting to embrace it, which makes me proud of her. You gotta work with what you got. And DJ does. I love that she is finally learning to use her magic. She is really taking life by the short and curlys and that kickass heroine is shining through.
I am very excited that a lot is changing in this world. Corrupt people are being exposed, supernaturals are being held accountable for their crimes, and DJ isn't letting anyone get away with anything anymore.
The plot was well done and the storyline kept my attention. The dialogue was entertaining and felt natural. The pacing was a lot better than the other books. The action was pure awesomeness. The series killer aspect was right up my alley. The series as a whole is going in a great direction.
The Bad
Nothing huge stuck out to me as bad, but there was some minor annoyances that are not even worth mentioning. But one thing that did bother me (which is true for the other books but seems more prominent here) was the fact that DJ is pretty much the only female character around. Sure, there's Eugenie, her best friend, but we don't see much of her. Having DJ surrounded by this many men just seems unrealistic. There has to be more women in this world.
Also, DJ needs to stop having so many love interests. With Elysian Fields, we are now up to 4 love interests. That is TOO MANY. Sure, DJ seems to be focused on Alex, but she has feelings for 3 other guys. Come. On. Can anyone say overkill?
The Snuggly
Despite the 4 love interests, I am happy to see DJ and Alex are finally going the direction I want them to. For the three book wait, I wish there was more sexual tension and build up in this book between DJ and Alex before they went further, but that's okay. I still love the idea of them together and hope to see them build an even stronger relationship in future books.
There is sex scenes but they are pretty glossed over. We only get the build up but no big show. Probably suitable for older teens.
Final Thoughts
I will for sure be reading the next book in the series. There characters are super fun and interesting. The urban fantasy elements are fantastic. And the action was exciting. Highly recommended.
Quotes
"What's wrong, DJ? You scared?" His words, carried on hot breath sweet with whiskey, tickled across my cheek. Jake's eyes were completely gone now, replaced by something cold and alien. "You should be."
I willed my voice to reflect a calm I didn't feel. "Explain what? Didn't it occur to you that I might listen better if you hadn't kidnapped me?" And right under Alex Warin's nose. He was going to be so royally pissed.
"Well, if you're going to talk it to death, never mind." I got up with every intention of marching back to my house and dying of humiliation--it would solve a lot of problems. He reached out and grabbed my arm before I got out of grabbing range, and pulled me into his lap.
"Shut up." He cradled my jaw in his hands and touched his lips to mine.

Enjoyable read!
By What the Cat Read
There are so many things that I could say about this book, I don’t even know where to begin or how much to divulge. As has been the case with the previous two books in the series, I simply just cannot get enough of Johnson’s writing! I know I’ve said this in my other reviews, but I just love how she blends modern New Orleans with that of the preternatural world she’s created for this series. And this time around I actually pulled up information online about some of the locations mentioned in the book. Yeah, when an author manages to motivate me to really look into the history of a place, it’s a sure fire bet that I’ve become a true fan. Shame that not all of Johnson’s version of the New Orleans isn’t real. I think I’d have a lot of fun if it was.
As far as the characters go, I still very much love DJ and Alex, and it was great to finally see them act on their feelings for each other. The idea of them as a couple is one that I’m really starting to want to see. Yes, it would be interesting to see DJ hook up with Jean or Jack, but the more that I’ve gotten to see Alex in the series, the more that I’m rooting for him. I also enjoyed the play between DJ and Rene and it was great to see him return in this book. Of all the character in the book that I didn’t care for, Rand seriously got on my nerves the entire story. He seriously doesn’t get that DJ doesn’t want him around, and his blatant disregards to her requests did nothing to endure him to me. Honestly, I think I was as frustrated with him as DJ was.
Action wise, this book was jammed packed from start to finish. It didn’t really feel as though there was a lot of down time between events. Just when it seemed as though DJ had a chance to breath and relax, something would come along which required her to take action. Though most of that action seemed to be running for her life and avoiding injury…something which she never seems to have much luck doing as this series progresses.
Overall, I think this was a great installment to the Sentinels of New Orleans series and I’m greatly looking forward to seeing what Johnson has next in store for everyone. =^.^=
